stray kids were my gateway group to kpop, and as I was so young when I discovered them, I had yet to develop a genuine music taste. My most listened to artists were a lot of the biggest names in pop such as Taylor Swift, which is not a bad thing at all, I just think it's telling that I was so attracted to a style of music so different to what I was familiar with and used to back then. Since then they've been my most listened to every year and I've dived into many of the genres they've explored, which led me to realise that I really love rock/alt rock and a lot of louder music. it is so, SO unfortunate that ateez has been brushed off by so many people as "noise music". their b-sides the last couple of years have been some of the most uniquely stylish, extremely well-produced stuff that I have heard in k-pop maybe ever. They have been giving a completely new life to that video gamey/cyberpunky dark synthpop genre in a way that sounds so fresh, and it has taken such a far step away from the super trendy 'the weeknd' version of that kind of sound. they just feel so innovative, like I hear their songs in that style and I literally can't find anything else like it. so truly unique. also not to mention, people are reeeeaaally missing out on the incredible creative direction (not only musically, but also visually and story-wise) that ateez offers. seeing their different eras playing out since like guerrilla has been the most exciting evolution I've experienced in k-pop.
Happy Holidays Choujimi, I love you for this video! As an Ateez fan we get that kind of every single day I don't think people actually think about it anymore they just say stuff to disresgard them, got to the point that I believe if they sing opera ( I don't doubt that could happen) people will still call that cause whatever lol I grew up listening to metal I like rock I am not found of r&b much still I can understand why so many people love it so much, still not for me, but I can totally get amazed by people doing it so well. Rock is also not for everybody, but is great, its a genre. No genre is better than the other they just different, like we are as people and what move us is never always the same. There is not one right way to love music. PS this comment section is a mess, I guess people will still weaponize this noise music stuff regardless. I mean you can always love your faves without shading or hating others, is a choice.
Love all the points you made in this video! I would also add as someone who listens to music like metal and industrial that many people will call anything noise when they aren't accustomed to the sounds and conventions of a genre. Unfortunately a lot of very talented artists won't be recognized for their work because of this.
people calling any slightly challenging k-pop music noise music as an insult when real actual noise music has more artistic integrity than k-pop could ever dare
My ult group is Stray Kids, and it is a huge departure from Taylor Swift. I suppose it goes to show how varied music taste is. I think people assume “noise music” is meaningless and is not valuable art. Likewise, I think stray kids is a good example of going against the mindset people have of noise music. Side Effects by SKZ is so important to talk about. You don't have to like Stray Kids, but I enjoy the various genres they explore. Their slower and more emotional music is also worth talking about. In fact, I argue that “noise music” has depth with the various genres that fall into it and the lyricism that goes into it.
Yeah, it's especially sad to see the whole Stray Kids' discography being ignorantly and hatefully labeled as noise music, when there's so much variety and passion for the art itself that makes you feel things!
I completely agree with you when it comes to how bgs are written off there are so many different styles I know Ateez and Skz were brought up but I also think that groups like NMIXX and NCT are also affected by this. Anything really experimental seems to be written off which is such a shame
As a debi, Nectar from TBZ purifies my soul whenever I hear it and I prefer it over their last comeback (Trigger) under IST, precisely bc I don't prefer "loud/noisy" music but if I let myself be swayed by the term being used as derogatory, then I would've never found any NCT gems that I genuinely love or explored SKZ and ATZ's discography (though they ended up not being my thing). Music can have different purposes-some songs are meant to be loud, brash and noisy and that's fine bc they'll always be an audience for that and the fact that some stans use "noisy" as an insult is super silly to me
nothing pisses me off more than people who just label ateez as noise music, because they clearly only know songs like wonderland, bouncy and guerrilla (although guerrilla is A FUCKING ROCKSONG) like wdym the group that released songs like inception, wave, halazia, ice on my teeth and deja vu is considered a group that makes noise music
I listen to noise music because it hurt my brain in a way I like and control and I find it calming. I never found this kind of music in kpop so thank you for making this video!
4:25 THAT'S THE REASON I PUT OFF BEING A STAY FOR SOOOOOO LOOOOONNNGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been watching K-Pop stuff since 2022 and I knew about them since then and I kinda wanted to stan them, but I delayed actually checking out their discography and actually listening to the full song instead of just the popular part (like Maniac or Domino) cause I wasn't sure if I would like their music. I only became a STAY this year on 10th May and they've been my entire mood since then.
thank you for this! seeing a ktuber defend skz or even talk about them at all is like finding a unicorn lmao. i assume you saw the tweet calling chk chk boom "just loud" when it's one of their least "loud" title tracks to date lmao. it just makes me sad that preconceived notions or just arbitrary hatred of a group so often causes people to miss out on really fun, innovative and just straight up good music. i know music taste is subjective but i honestly can't seem to figure out why complex production is so hated in kpop spaces. and groups like skz and ateez don't just make mindless noise; every melody, beat, and random sound effect usually has a purpose in the song, and they're able to make something cohesive out of sounds you might not expect to go together. that's an amazing talent if you ask me. i'm not familiar with all of ateez's discography, but in regards to skz, i almost always find that their songs sound full because there are so many layers to them, and their production skills are only getting better, in my opinion. they also explore so many different genres and put so much heart and thought into their concepts and lyrics, and yet the label of "noise" that they're given comes with the connotation that they're just randomly slapping sounds and words together.
I've always categorized noise music as songs with chaotic/industrial instrumentals. I've always been fond of it. Its also kind of funny because a lot of "noise" songs become popular after a few days or weeks.
i automatically consider people who refer to kpop songs they don't like as "noise music" (even if i don't like the song either) incredibly annoying and i make a mental note to never recommend them any music i enjoy
People dont just associate noise music with edm, they just name it anything with a "loud" instrumental. Heard people say that you and i by dreamcatcher is noise music (now that is messed up)
I’m a massive edm and electronic music fan, who originally grew up with 1st gen and early 2nd gen kpop. Blackpink and 4th gen brought me back into kpop due to how energetically similar to the sounds I heard at edm festivals
Loved your take on this! It’s interesting now that I think of how I describe the kpop I listen to to the people who don’t listen to kpop. I never mean it in a mean way when describing it but I regularly refer to it as my “pump up music” when listening to “noise music” groups.
Too many kpop stans got some damn sensitive ears. Theyre the equivalent of that type of person who exclusively watches children shows and nothing else, then drags media with any kind of intensity as "depraved" or whatever. Like its fine to only consume the kind of content you like, do your thing, but if youre not gonna branch out even a little because youre incapable of understanding why anyone else would appreciate those other things, then you need to accept that your scope is extremely limited, and your input on those things does not hold much value.
i know a few kpop stans who need to listen to this and stay quiet when they dont know anything. ALSO THANK YOU FOR SHOUTING OUT SUPERNATURAL BY A.C.E THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND PEOPLE LIKE TO GLOSS OVER IT TO PAY ATTENTION TO STUFF THEY WANT TO HATE ON 🙏🏼
Just listen to whatever pleases your ears. Don't be dumb and know what music you listen to and others listen to. As a person who listens to stray kids and classical music
This is pretty much what I was thinking about when I sent in my opinion submission from a bit ago! As always you manage to express the situation efficiently and eloquently. I think the thing with labeling songs as noise is that it’s truly up to the listener’s discretion, for example sticker by nct and as you said chk chk boom could be given the title of noise even though they’re completely different!
Your right 100% I’ve found that groups often labeled as noise music have the most diverse music in the kpop scene. Stray kids is my first kpop group and still my últs. it’s genuinely insulting to undermine their music bc it’s loud. Because obviously I have ears I know it’s loud but there’s so much more to a song than just loud. Their new comeback has gotten so much backlash which makes me sad for stray kids. If you genuinely want to critique the comeback give better words than “cringe” “all over the place” actually give suggestions. Also listen to the full album? Ive found while exploring girl groups this year that if i don’t like a TT I should check out besides. There’s so much more to a comeback than its title track.
I personally love disharmonies in songs and that is why the moment I heard the chaotic booms in God's menu I was like "YES DADDY 😫 MORE!" And that's how i became a Stay
I think it's interesting that you brought up sounds from industrial settings finding their way into the music we listen to today. I like how these songs make me feel because of that. It gives the songs a grimey, tough kinda vibe that could be visualized into something like metal shavings, flying sparks, explosions, steel, etc. Objects and structures you would see in settings with those powerful and sometimes "dangerous" sounds. 👨🏻🏭
My mom pointed out another interesting thing in kpop a lot of people subconsciously have a problem with. It's how in the pre-chorus they always slow the rhythm and gradually go up. I'll give SKZ as example, since people tend to hate bgs more anyway: 그저 계속 만들어가 새롭게⬆️ Because we're one of a kind 누구도 따라 할 수 없는 our own game⬆️ 시작부터 다 우리 꺼⬆️⬆️ 잠깐 떠나간다⬆️ 해도⬆️ 결국 다시 찾게 될⬆️⬆️
for kpop stans its not even just industrial mechanic sounds either, i saw someone calling boom boom bass by riize noise when the instrumental for the song has mostly actual instruments? this noise thing is getting ridiculous at this point
I always find it so difficult to explain what type of music I listen to. The three groups I listen to the most are Stray Kids, Day6 and Got7 - and sure, they’re all kpop groups but they’re so different from each other that it feels weird to label them as the same “genre”!
"noise music" is literally just edm + Insert other genre. When I was new to Kpop I heard people say with a negative connotation but also referring to a genre of music?? Very confusing but like. I like whatever it actually is 😅😅
That's how many artists use the genre like K-Pop Idols, but Noise Artists go purely on Noise Music and just experiment. How noise music sounds in K-Pop is kind of different than how true Noise Music sounds like
Personally, I find it difficult to talk about "noise music" without sounding hypocritical. Just to be clear I definitely do not see noise music as a derogatory term, but as I am a deeply vibe-based person (don't know if that's the right term) I use the term for certain types of songs, which sound a bit controversial and not only among the general public, but to me as well. On some days, I just don't feel like listening to songs, which are more likely to cause me a headache and I don't hold that against them, but the thing is even Black Mamba by aespa or Crazy by Le Sserafim can do the exact same thing and I love those songs and groups very much. Generally, I feel like my favourite kind of noise music is a vocal-heavy or vocal-centric pre-chorus going into a more simple (melody-wise) but very hard-hitting chorus such as Jikjin by Treasure or Thunderous by Stray Kids. However, I don't think Stray Kids' more recent releases are inherently worse, they're just less for me. I feel similarly about Ateez, but both of those groups are so talented it doesn't really matter. Another argument is that I do feel the same about some girl crush songs, but there are fewer of them, as I do prefer girl groups overall and therefore give the sogs more chances. I thought I despised memeM by Purple Kiss and it turned out, that's not the case, I just didn't feel it at first and only came back to it recently and sadly boy groups don't get the same benefits, because I don't feel like it's worth the time and energy I could've and do spend on new releases instead. It is a shame, but it is what it is. Thankfully STAYs always find their ways to promote the gems I tend to miss, so good job guys!
Seeing someone call, of all groups, _Seventeen_ a noise music group was really the final straw for me like oh. I guess this word truly just means nothing at all now besides a meaningless insult
i think the kpop noise music conversation is a lot of times misogynistic because like you said noise in this context means hard hitting. so women can’t make hard hitting music? when i think of a noise song i always think of the opening of the secret story of the swan by iz*one. i miss them 😭
Ohhh it's great that you name dropperd Supernatural by A.C.E because the amount of awful takes I've seen on twitter after the Piñata teaser went viral... A.C.E have a very diverse discography, they've done hard hitting songs since debut but 10 seconds off their chorus go viral on twitter and suddenly they get locked in the "noise music" vault forever when they released songs like Supernatural, Anymore and Just Better all within the past year and none of which are remotely "noise music"-adjacent.
My aversion to BGs in general has less to do with music quality, vocal talent or dance talent and more do to with the styling and concepts for said groups. I'm personally not a fan of the hyper masculine, hard, tough guy shtick because it isn't subversive in any way. And that hyper masculine concept unfortunately touches every aspect of these groups, including the music. I do enjoy BGs with fun non serious concepts like Shinee though
@@catdan831 that honestly just sounds like an excuse because there are popular boy groups that aren’t hypermasculine? stray kids often does soft/cute/whimsical concepts and styling, txt usually has a soft or boyish vibe, and enhypen i think is masculine in a more elegant way. but i mean, if bgs just aren’t for you, they aren’t for you.
For me it's loud agressive and too much edm and i don't like that, i don't like Ateez and Blackpink songs that is noise music for me! And i don't like 2ne1 neither but it's since Blackpink they made this noise edm songs that i don't like at all! And i'm not fan of many boygroups because of this reason, too much powerful edm noise music. Stray kids is more hip hop even if they made some noise music like lalala that sounds more like ateez songs and i'm not a fan. I prefer their rap songs
@newjeansfan238 no wonder you're a new jeans fan. No common sense at all....just like your faves. Goodnight 😘 Go take some milk before you go to bed. 🙈
I’m not against noise music as you define it at the beginning of the video - I LOVE music from artists like Billie Eilish, Childish Gambino and Ashnikko that use all kinds of strange or unconventional sounds as instruments to create innovative moods and weave exciting sonic textures in their music. The issue I have is with noise music for the sake of noise music. Just using weird sounds because they’re weird, instead of to actually communicate a message or feeling. And I guess I shouldn’t be expecting loving artistry from kpop or whatever but fuck it, I’m an optimistic music fan and I have high standards for kpop’s potential… it just often lets me down. To me one good reason that groups like Stray Kids and Ateez often get written off for their industrial sound is that often their songs are just out-there for the sake of it - I’ve gotten so excited at some of the sounds they use, only to listen to the full song and be let down by the lack of development and shallowness of feeling. Like, you’re doing this daring thing sonically but you’re not even backing it up with any exciting ideas - just wanting to be different but not giving any good reasons to hold the audience’s attention. I think the only kpop group that consistently does noise music well is Nmixx. And Agust D as a “kpop” soloist.
@rkivelover i can’t speak for ateez but stray kids songs are not out there just for the hell of it lol. they put a lot of thought into their songs and the sounds that go into them all serve a purpose and are relevant to the lyrics or the feeling the song is trying to convey. it’s fine if you don’t like their music, but it’s not fair to write off their efforts when you obviously don’t know anything about them or their process.
@ maybe it is because of my music taste, I don’t know, but what I do know is that I struggle to feel the meaning/intent of skz songs through their music without needing to look up and decipher the lyrics. I’m aware that they often write and produce their own stuff, but that doesn’t automatically mean that their music is good at communicating emotions. I think it’s something few artists can do consistently, so I don’t blame them, but that’s just my view.
Stray Kids have such a variety of songs and music. Clearly you have never listened to much of it. Cover Me,Leave,Levanter, Scars, Secret Secret, and Winter Falls are just a handful of their songs that don’t fit noise music. Lack of artistry? Hardly. They have plenty of that with 8 talented members. They have strong vocalists, and meaningful lyrics in their non hype songs. Han for instance writes a lot of songs about anxiety and depression and loneliness. They are a unique group and it is frustrating that some people sell them way short.

Kpop stans when they see a bg making music that hits hard: OMG THAT'S NOISE MUSIC!! 👹
Even girl grops too.
They said blackpink and aespa produce noise music
Felix can't sing and deepening your voice and screaming the whole chorus is not an artistic choice but rather a lazy way to get through a song.

For being a group that's label to be noisy, skz, in my humble opinion, have some of the best soft/Ballad songs I've heard in kpop

also not to mention, people are reeeeaaally missing out on the incredible creative direction (not only musically, but also visually and story-wise) that ateez offers. seeing their different eras playing out since like guerrilla has been the most exciting evolution I've experienced in k-pop.

ateez fan AND yoojung in your pfp ⁉ immaculate taste SPOTTED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
What a cool ass video, loved the introduction and your reasoning
Noise music = kpop.
And that's why we like it.
Coz we all had a bad day
this was so well said, and more importantly, incredibly interesting! thank you for this! ^_^
I nearly screamed when you mentioned Pow, I LOVE THEM😣
I completely agree with you when it comes to how bgs are written off there are so many different styles I know Ateez and Skz were brought up but I also think that groups like NMIXX and NCT are also affected by this.
Music can have different purposes-some songs are meant to be loud, brash and noisy and that's fine bc they'll always be an audience for that and the fact that some stans use "noisy" as an insult is super silly to me
Thanks for the A.C.E mention. They're still getting dragged for the two or so measures of "noise" in the chorus of Pinata. 😮💨
nothing pisses me off more than people who just label ateez as noise music, because they clearly only know songs like wonderland, bouncy and guerrilla (although guerrilla is A FUCKING ROCKSONG) like wdym the group that released songs like inception, wave, halazia, ice on my teeth and deja vu is considered a group that makes noise music
GluedToTheDeskJimi is back at it again
I've always categorized noise music as songs with chaotic/industrial instrumentals. I've always been fond of it. Its also kind of funny because a lot of "noise" songs become popular after a few days or weeks.
i automatically consider people who refer to kpop songs they don't like as "noise music" (even if i don't like the song either) incredibly annoying and i make a mental note to never recommend them any music i enjoy
People dont just associate noise music with edm, they just name it anything with a "loud" instrumental. Heard people say that you and i by dreamcatcher is noise music (now that is messed up)
ignorant people will literally call rock kpop songs 'noise music' like come on now y'all 🤦♀
I’m a massive edm and electronic music fan, who originally grew up with 1st gen and early 2nd gen kpop. Blackpink and 4th gen brought me back into kpop due to how energetically similar to the sounds I heard at edm festivals
howdo ppl call entire skz discography noise music when hey quite literally offer ever genre possible. Ateez as well as wll as blackpink
as a stay i clicked so fast on this when i saw it in my notifications lolol
Using the Bouncy video is so funny because that’s literally one of their least noisy songs and push ATZ into the mainstream
I also feel like some Kpop fans can’t tell music genres apart, which is why expanding their tastes outside of Kpop would be very helpful for them.
i know a few kpop stans who need to listen to this and stay quiet when they dont know anything. ALSO THANK YOU FOR SHOUTING OUT SUPERNATURAL BY A.C.E THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND PEOPLE LIKE TO GLOSS OVER IT TO PAY ATTENTION TO STUFF THEY WANT TO HATE ON 🙏🏼
Getting me through my shift, thank you
Just listen to whatever pleases your ears.
Stray kids music always good for party and enjoy your life without thinking of other. Stray kids music is so motivated and with deep meaning.
We’ve long been due for a revolution in “noise music” discorse.
I'll give SKZ as example, since people tend to hate bgs more anyway:
그저 계속 만들어가 새롭게⬆️
Because we're one of a kind
누구도 따라 할 수 없는 our own game⬆️
시작부터 다 우리 꺼⬆️⬆️
잠깐 떠나간다⬆️ 해도⬆️
결국 다시 찾게 될⬆️⬆️
Remember those people who said "kpop songs I would show non kpop fans". It's their fault for not gatekeeping the normies.
for kpop stans its not even just industrial mechanic sounds either, i saw someone calling boom boom bass by riize noise when the instrumental for the song has mostly actual instruments?
this noise thing is getting ridiculous at this point
I always find it so difficult to explain what type of music I listen to. The three groups I listen to the most are Stray Kids, Day6 and Got7 - and sure, they’re all kpop groups but they’re so different from each other that it feels weird to label them as the same “genre”!
"noise music" is literally just edm + Insert other genre. When I was new to Kpop I heard people say with a negative connotation but also referring to a genre of music?? Very confusing but like. I like whatever it actually is 😅😅
Not really what noise music is, but I guess everyone has their own opinions
That's how many artists use the genre like K-Pop Idols, but Noise Artists go purely on Noise Music and just experiment. How noise music sounds in K-Pop is kind of different than how true Noise Music sounds like
people that complain about noise should listen to sophies discography (no hate i ❤ sophie sm, her music is truly like art for me)
Personally, I find it difficult to talk about "noise music" without sounding hypocritical.
NewJeans would be considered “noise music” too, if you were to listen to a producer named Cashemere Cat. Lot’s of references from him as well
Seeing someone call, of all groups, _Seventeen_ a noise music group was really the final straw for me like oh. I guess this word truly just means nothing at all now besides a meaningless insult
Noise music can be so good if the song is not particularly made to be noise music just to be noise music
But that’s objective noise music can be made to explore sounds. That’s what kpop is.
Calling chk chk boom loud and noise music is DIABOLICAL if that's noisy then what tf do you listen to lullabies????
i think the kpop noise music conversation is a lot of times misogynistic because like you said noise in this context means hard hitting. so women can’t make hard hitting music? when i think of a noise song i always think of the opening of the secret story of the swan by iz*one. i miss them 😭
Ohhh it's great that you name dropperd Supernatural by A.C.E because the amount of awful takes I've seen on twitter after the Piñata teaser went viral...
Skz and Ateez are my top2 bgs lol
(Purple Kiss and Nmixx top2 ggs)
My aversion to BGs in general has less to do with music quality, vocal talent or dance talent and more do to with the styling and concepts for said groups. I'm personally not a fan of the hyper masculine, hard, tough guy shtick because it isn't subversive in any way. And that hyper masculine concept unfortunately touches every aspect of these groups, including the music.
I do enjoy BGs with fun non serious concepts like Shinee though
@@catdan831 that honestly just sounds like an excuse because there are popular boy groups that aren’t hypermasculine? stray kids often does soft/cute/whimsical concepts and styling, txt usually has a soft or boyish vibe, and enhypen i think is masculine in a more elegant way. but i mean, if bgs just aren’t for you, they aren’t for you.
no mention of nct? they get unjustifiably whacked for making noise music on the daily. they suffered more than jesus on twitter.
You're not making any sense. Wtf are you inhaling????🥴😭
@donttalk372 lol it's you who make any sense ans inhale something!! lol
@newjeansfan238 no wonder you're a new jeans fan. No common sense at all....just like your faves. Goodnight 😘
Go take some milk before you go to bed. 🙈
@donttalk372 Lol and no wonder you are a noise music fan who are offended lol or ateez fan or à blink and i don't like ateez and blackpink
@donttalk372 And you, baby baby offended about your ego, go drink Milk 😝🤣
@rkivelover well it might not translate for you but it does for a lot of other people 🤷🏽♀️
Stray Kids have such a variety of songs and music. They are a unique group and it is frustrating that some people sell them way short.
noise music is anything stray kids makes
