EPIC Trout Grand Slam (Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat) Fishing Remote Canyon (Got HAILED On!)

This day of fishing was one to remember! I caught wild brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout in a remote and rugged canyon with no one to be seen but my friend and I for miles and miles. Seems like a matter of application and personal preference to me. Traditional fly rods, tenkara rods, Spey rods all have their advantages/disadvantages, unique manipulation, etc. The common thread being they are (mainly) used to target trout/salmon with flies and were created to do so and to solve a specific problem. Spey rods were developed in the river Spey, which is large. Tenkara in the small mountain streams of Japan. The debate for superiority is very similar and equally stupid to bass fisherman arguing spin vs bait casting setups in my opinion. Different applications and personal preferences.

    You said casting a fly. You're not casting a fly but lobbing them. In my experience in curiously trying out just the fly because of the front facing hackle, I found out that at least where I trout fish in the Ozark's, trout hammer them. in the lower currents where they like to feed. Now, I have over 700 flys...(experience). So, after that experience I bout about 50 different type of Tenkara flies. The Black Shinpuru this week I caught 5-trout 13-16" , 2 hours on that one fly alone using Tight Line Euro Nymphing with my 22' built leader ,10'.5" Moonshine Epiphany with Redington Tilt. That is a very well balanced combination using all 3-one once weights. But, since I have 19 fly rods...(experience), 3wt-8wt...(experience) and use all of them regularly bass, bluegill and trout, (I'm retired and that's pretty much all I do) I find that traditional fly fishing is real fly casting fishing and there is way more skill involved with the equipment and technique. Than Tenkara and Euro lobbing a fly fishing. I do a lot of French Euro Nymphing and found it to be tediously boring but though slightly MORE PRODUCTIVE because the drag a fly line creates, yet, the main emphasis is catching trout since what else does those 2 types of lobbing a fly can do. Sort of like hunting deer with a bow rather than a rife which I've done much of both too. There isn't anything special thinking that Euro Nymphing and Tenkra is big deal. It's a lazy mans type of fishing that you think your in the category of traditional FF. So, stop griping about what we think and calling us snobs. Then you're going to get a reaction. Just do what you do and keep you mind on that rather than what we are all supposedly thinking when most are not. Right!! Who is saying we can't get along???

    • @FlickyFlies
      @FlickyFlies 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love this comment because of how much it proves my point. "There isn't anything special thinking that Euro Nymphing and Tenkra is big deal" ... "It's a lazy mans type of fishing that you think your in the category of traditional FF". And then the next sentence you're coming with "don't call us snobs?". Are you projecting? So much to unpack there (experience). Also, you seriously want me to say lobbing every time I mention casting?! That seems kinda strange so I think I'll just keep saying casting since everyone but apparently you know what that means.

    Very refreshing to see folks not holding fish out of the water or over handling trout for the "Glory" shots. Like how many pics do people need of themselves and fish. Every time you handle fish mortality rates go way up. Leave them in the net and take the shots, pull the fly and say goodbye.

    i use streamers 50% of the time. it requires more technic then a fly because i present it as if its alive and moving through the water as apposed to a fly that the water dictates its path. you can also pop a streamer on the top of the water and get hits. most trout leave the water to slam it. my favorite thing is to get them to chase it full speed while jigging quick and watch them just inhale it! if your not fishing streamers you don't know what your missing.......literally.

    • @FlickyFlies
      @FlickyFlies 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yes it can! I saw that you had to raise your arm and rod pretty high to keep the fish close to you - try shortening the line. I have had better luck when your casting line + tippett is no greater than 1 ft longer than your rod. This allows complete control and you can keep line tight and reach down with your other arm to release it, without having to elevate your casting arm so high. Many folks have line too long, then you have to hand-line the fish in. It’s amazing how big a fish you can land with Tenkara, I have landed 26” pike, and bass up to 4 lbs. It’s that power curve, some don’t understand, the long rod and distance of the bend make up for not being able to release more line out (like a reel does). Happy fishing!

    • @FlickyFlies
      @FlickyFlies หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right on! 26'' pike is seriously impressive! I caught one maybe 18-20 inches, but skinny and it was a heck of a good fight. I'm usually in the same camp as you, never felt comfortable hand-lining. My line wasn't quite that long here but I definitely was rocking a bit more tippet than usual with my double nymph rig and desire to get deeper into a few of the bigger holes. Could have shorted my main line by a foot or so but laziness often prevails on the water, and a little extra reach didn't hurt either I suppose.

    Lovely spot. May I offer a bit of constructive criticism? You yourself got to go visit this river and experience the beauty and the SOUND of the river. However we did not have that experience because music was playing over this video. It could just be me but I think your video would be improved greatly if there was no music at all. Something for you to consider. Those were some beautiful fish.

    Your title: “Why can’t Tenkara and fly fishermen get along?” suprises me. I’ve never had a negative encounter with this, nor seen a negative encounter among other fishers.

      TBH I never have in person either, except some off vibes at fly shops perhaps. Online is a different story for sure ... it's out there.

    Love the scenery & camping footage. How would you compare the Yari vs Fox fire for small streams?

    • @FlickyFlies
      @FlickyFlies หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you liked it! They feel like completely different rods to me. The Yari feels like extremely nice graphite that is so supple from that small percentage of fiberglass. The FoxFire feels like a legit fiberglass rod. It's also noticeably shorter. They are 2 of my favorite rods ... I'd use the Yari anywhere the length was needed and the FoxFire when I wanted a much shorter rod.

      This is the Tenkara Rod Co. "The Rocky". It's their beefiest rod and one of my most used - I like its ability to throw heavier nymphs and streamers and of course how well it does at fighting bigger fish.

    Another excellent video Chris. Those vertical rocks on the far bank were absolutely stunning.Amazing habitat for those trout. Rainbows don't always get the respect they deserve but I think you'll agree they're among the best fighters among trout. That was quite the gnarly climb up to that rock overhang. I like your insect highlights! That was quite a bit of hail, I wonder how much it would take to measurably drop the temperature of the water. BTW, your cameras perform admirably in the wet. Beautiful country, you're lucky to be able to enjoy it. Thanks for the hard work and quality vid!

    • @FlickyFlies
      @FlickyFlies หลายเดือนก่อน

      Couldn't agree more - those cliffs just coming right down into the creek creating deep holes full of trout ... how cool! I certainly enjoy catching rainbows, hard to beat a colored up wild rainbow fighting hard in cold water. I go back and forth between whether I prefer them or browns more. Cutthroat deserve their own class out west, I'll never complain about catching them. The hail storm totally dropped the water temps by a good 5 degrees I'd say. Glad you enjoyed the insects ... some of that butterfly footage I was so psyched to capture haha. Thanks for watching as always.
