Tenkara Fishing the Black Hills (TONS of Trout A SURPRISE Catch)
I've backpacked in and out of in that canyon many times over the past 25 years. Hard as hell to get back out, fishing can be really fantastic, and at times mediocre depending on time of year and water conditions. Water gets to hot in late summer. It's certainly a very cool place. Attempting to fish this you have to have your wits, leaving the ego at home, must be extremely diligent, having a plan B, C, D and E, because shit can and will go wrong real quick in there,. You are 100% on your own with no services. and sometimes PLB's will not work either. It will take a heilo to get you out if you break your leg upward of $50K.. know this from other reports. there's 100's of years of history in that canyon, thousands even...
That's the truth! That's how I don' typically like to do these type of trips solo.
Wonderful video and that chipmunk munching away is priceless !!
Thanks for watching! I was so psyched when I captured that chipmunk. They'd been hanging around my camp the whole time I was there.
I couldn’t stay for the end of the vid, but can you talk some about how you rig a double nymph on your tenkara rod? Length of line and tippet.
No worries! I run straight level line to a stopper knot. Then tie off using a standard fisherman's knot w/ fluorocarbon tippet, anywhere from 4x to 6x typically. Tie the first nymph to the end of that. Tie another piece of fluorocarbon *around the line* of the first section. Then a fly to the end of that. I tie the dropper around the line instead of off the hook like you'd normally see because if you want to change only the top fly you can carefully slide the dropper tag up, retie the first fly, then slide it back down. Does that make sense? As far as length, depends highly on the water. Typically 3-4 feet for the top fly and 1 foot or so for the dropper.
Hope 2025 will give me the will to stay and try as hard as you do to catch. Thanks for another great video
Appreciate you watching my friend!
where is this at
I don't generally give out sensitive spots, sorry!
It’s clearly not affecting your ability to get into some great areas and catch some fish, but wet-wading in Crocs is WILD. Begging for an actual broken leg one of these days.
Have you tried the Croc *Bistro* models specifically? They are insanely grippy, much more than dedicated fishing boots. They dry quickly, they are light to hike in, they are cheap and they have the most grip of any shoe I or my friends have tried. Regular crocs ... not using those in a million years but def check out the bistro model.
I hear ya, word-of-mouth destroyed a lot of fishing places in Colorado. Thank God, I know people that have private property and that’s where we go fishing now.
That sounds pretty awesome!
Yes they do. If you find it, keep it to yourself. Why do people have the burning desire to share their memories with the world?
Narcissistic people think people care about what they do
Can you clarify for me... are you upset that I made a fly fishing video on my fly fishing channel about a good day of fishing without blowing the spot up? Apologies if I'm misunderstanding.
@@FlickyFlies I can tell by your question that you were not a fisherman BEFORE social media and video geolocating.
@@jasonsmith7809 You know what they say about assumptions? Maybe move along to some other content on TH-cam.
I think that I fished this creek about 20 years ago. I won’t name it. It was gorgeous and I caught a few 18 inch browns on a 7.5 foot 4 wt. one of my favorite trips.
Awesome, and thank you!
Couldnt have jammed a stick in the end of the broken part?
Potentially but I'm not sure it would be worth it to regain that lost height and then have a less strong version of my tripod fall over and destroy all of my camera gear.
Crocs? 😂That had to be a joke? Seriously, there isn’t a more slippery when wet shoe in the history of the world. Literally anything else would be better. Holy fork balls ☠️☠️☠️

@ Hadn’t heard of them….but certainly will take a look at this model…you seem committed😂🤙🏻🎣 Thanks!
They do make a special river version, that grips, but it doesnt matter, the shoes are too soft and loose.
@@PatrickSymmes Not in my opinion. To each their own, glad you have some shoes you can use yourself.
@@CoastalBendFishNinja Join the Croc cult!
I could hear the pain and frustration in that broken tripod. Glad you could make due and still have an epic story to tell.
Yeah man, it hurt in the moment. I figured it was going to be crazy expensive to repair, cuz Gitzo. Turns out it was only around 20 shipped haha.
Leave the net at home. You're backpacking. Fish are just as easily brought to hand.
That's why I cut out the tags in my clothing when backpacking!
you were surrounded by trees and no doubt a million fallen branches. Why not find a straight stick with the appropriate diameter and length and insert it into the hollow end of the broken leg. Problem solved.
Unless that stick breaks and my camera and lens falls in the water creating a much worse problem haha.
I know I am late to the party, but loving catching up on your videos... Streamers on Tenkara are indeed deadly. Used them for years here on the Cape Streams and the smallmouth bass also love them |(obviously). Great fun.
They really are so effective! Smallmouth on tenkara is about as good as it gets too imo.
@FlickyFlies True story...
Very cool. I have caught carp to 10 pounds on my 11foot Tenkara here in Cape Town but its touch and go with fish that size...
Man what a rush huh? What 11 foot rod were you using for that? About how many inches does a 10 pound carp go, btw? I've caught, I think it was ... 29 inches on my biggest tenkara rod and it was incredible!
@@FlickyFlies Nissin Professional Kawashi 360 7:3 rod. The fish was around 28 inches. I have caught carp to 35 pounds here on a 7 weight fly rod but a 20 inch + on Tenkara is crazy fun and scary at the same time...
@@FlickyFlies Hmm, I found a nice spot in my area with lots of 2 to 5 pound carp, I think Ill take my Tenkara for a spin tomorrow...
Seems you have regular 1000 foot descents to where you fish. That’ll keep the vast majority of the public away!
Lol that does seem to be the de facto amount of elevation loss for me doesn't it?
Beautiful location Chris. Love those fighting rainbows. Excellent work capturing the experience (as always). Looking forward to the next segment.
Thanks my friend!
So cool... Loved the video
Thanks man! Glad to have you here.
Wow, beautiful rainbows! I caught my first wild rainbow on tenkara this year here in Utah. So much different than the stocked rainbows. Are the neoprene socks for warmth? Seriously considering the crocs and socks combo for 2025. I’ve got recommended style of crocs from you, but what brand sock do you use? How high up the leg is it?
Indeed, the wild rainbows seem to fight harder but at the very least they definitely look prettier! Yes, I only wear the neoprene socks when warmth is needed. Thanks! Searching for gold seems fun!
Great video, well done 😊
Thanks so much!
Can you talk about the line you are using on your rod. Personally I use furled lines, but everyone’s different.
I prefer level lines because I'm tight-line nymphing and I like how there is less drag to pull the nymph back.
Awesome place
I know right! Thanks for watching again man.
God I love the fact that someone else suffers this way in Winter. Waaaaay to cold for me. Im going to stay in and pray for Spring.
Lol! To be fair, I haven't fished in the winter like this in about 2 years. I've gotten soft.
@ Yep I’ve pretty much sworn it off too. Tooo painful. Would be one thing if I was catching fish.
I got the chills when you handlined that fish and the tippet snapped....the same exact thing happened to me on my local river. I should have kept him on the pole all the way to the net...Hope I get a chance like that again. Love your channel. Tenkara all the way!
It's heartbreaking! I'm not too good at hand-lining, that's for sure. Thanks for being a viewer, appreciate you being here and I'm glad you enjoy my channel!
"Here's this great spot, but I won't tell ya anything about where it might because me and my friends are the only ones allowed to enjoy it." Thanks dude.
I get the frustration, but you can also go find your own spots and then not tell me. There's tons of them out there. Just trying to show off a cool spot, like I said. No ill will intended. Besides, no one wants even my relatively small TH-cam channel blowing up spots, trust me... especially if they recognize this place.
What an incredibly beautiful canyon! Delighted you enjoyed some wonderful fishing. At my age I am quite sure I could never access such an amazing locale - but I am truly heartened to know such places still exist, and that you had a great outing (gear issue aside).
Thank you Michael! Indeed, they’re still out there! I must admit the hike back out, on day two, after we had hiked a few more miles in just about wiped us out. The elevation didn’t seem so bad on the way down into the canyon!
They do now......
Do they really know about it though?
@@FlickyFliesI knew exactly where you were from the screen grab…and laughed at the title. It’s not a secret 🤫
@@CoastalBendFishNinja I actually don't think you do if I had to guess, I think you're thinking of a similar place. That one is everyone's best secret fishing spot. But maybe I'm wrong.
@@FlickyFlies 🎣🤙🏻🍻 I said what I said. I wasn’t mistaking it for somewhere else. Be well and tight lines 🙏🏻🎣 Would never put info on a public space to blow up a spot, so you are safe from me 😂🤙🏻
@@CoastalBendFishNinja Haha word, if you say so I believe you! But then you know it's a pretty damn secret spot haha. I know that other one is not as secretive as we'd like to believe but I estimate maybe 2-3 people come here every week, with obviously some weeks being less and some more. Nice! My pleasure! I'd love to fish some of the drifless spots you've got - when I fished it I went up to Wisconsin.
The biggest brown trout hang out at the where the river gets really warm guys right on the edge of where trout can't live is where the biggest ones grow
Is that something you've really noticed?
Awesome video! I plan on making a film myself in the two wild Gila trout streams in AZ! These fish are a high desert gem, especially the wild and pure strains, most these folks don’t get it, but what can ya do🤷🏼♂️ great work! Earned a sub!
Heck yea man! This upcoming spring?
@@FlickyFlies yup! I’ll be once again targeting wild apaches and gilas to finish out my wild az trout challenge🤙🏼
They say trout don't live in ugly places, and you're proving that with every video. Thanks for taking us with you.
Plot Twist: My next video coming out is from a gray winter day catching stocker rainbow trout in the Denver South Platte downtown! (It isn't)
@@FlickyFlies Been to downtown Denver. You don't have to take me there. (I didn't catch any stocker rainbows, though.)
@ did you catch wild rainbows? Carp perhaps?
@@FlickyFlies Unfortunately, I wasn't there to fish. (I was just in downtown Denver. The closest I got to the S. Platte was driving over it on one of the bridges.)
Haha I gotcha!
I think someone said a long time ago that it is not about the fish, it's about fooling them or something like that.
That someone is smart! I get a lot of value from all sorts of aspects of fishing. The places it brings me is probably my #1. Just catching a fish and fooling them is great too, size doesn't matter too much. At least, I don't chase it. Catching a big fish, however, really can feel amazing and get the heart racing like nothing else in fishing.
Check out www.flickyflies.com to see a selection of my nature photography! Thanks for watching.
I know people like to keep secrets that you could at least tell us what state you're in!
Sorry man, just isn't needed for a video of this type!
@FlickyFlies it's not like I'm asking if it's in Sedona like one person was asking. If you said the state it's in there's no way anyone's going to pinpoint where you're at or even get within a hundred miles!
@ I hear the argument, not trying to be a pain I just don’t think it’s necessary to enjoy the video. I know when I’m looking for spots and people drop a state, personally, it helps me a lot in narrowing down the search!
@ btw, I almost deleted the Sedona comment but I felt that just saying nope was fine. But if we really think about it, now people know it isn’t Sedona and will help narrow down that search. Idk man, I just don’t think it’s necessary or helps the streams stay healthy. I know people have other opinions about that or call it gatekeeping but I fall in line with not giving out details if I’m going to film and show a place.
@@FlickyFliesOh please, like you didn’t tag the state on your instagram.
