Aroura 800 film looked better to me than both Porta and lomo

I see film for my 640 camera advertised on Ebay with very old expiration dates--sometimes 20 years back or more. Is this film reliably functional? If not, why would anybody buy it? How much past the expiration date can one safely go?

Definitely NOT the ultimate beginners camera. It has no depth of field button. The Pentax KM or Spotmatic F is far better for a beginner. The K1000 is far too over hyped and generally has inferior build quality especially the later Hong Kong and Chinese made copies.

I have a Polaroid sun 600 lms. I had a film pack that was said to work for I type and 600. I had another one that was only for 600 with color/b&w. The one for I type and 600 is useless on my camera. Won’t even turn on. Cuz it doesn’t have the film pack battery. You answered a huge question.

In my country e6 dev and scan are very expensive. 10 bucks for 1 roll. Compared to c41 3 bucks and even local homebrew 7 for 3 roll bw/c41/ecn

The tech sheets all match. Someone theorized the Portra is higher quality tolerances. Everything else off the line that isn't that doesn't pass that quality threshold gets put into UltraMax 800. If you want to see for yourself, pick a color (not red), and go through this video comparing them. If the exposure isn't the same or very very similar, you can't compare. Sometimes portra's greens are different than the other two, sometimes they all match, etc. etc. Regarding grain and latitude, there are only a couple of shots in this video where exposure is the same. And the latitude looks the same. If you put colorplus in the mix and did a blind test, it would easily stand out. I don't feel confident judging grain off a youtube video so.

This was very very helpful to me. I have been in the process of refurbing my two polaroid cameras ( slr680/sx70) I was seriously considering a conversion to 600 on the SX70 until this video. You've proven to me that I've already got the entire greatness covered and I need not convert anything. Just shoot sx70 until they don't make it anymore! Thank you for all you do.

Oh my god… This actually works! I bought a camera that was untested and slotted a used 600 pack into it to test it and it didn’t work, I pumped it up and put a pack with more juice and it slurred itself to life. Who even thought of this. And better yet, it all works beautifully

What happens if you don't set the ASA/ISO speed correctly? Ex: Kodak 400 but setting the ASA/ISO at 200?

I taught photography classes at the local community college for 20 years (now retired), including beginning photography, both film and digital. It was by far my favorite class to teach! These cameras were and are true workhorses. We had them in the photo dept to lend out to students. Anyone who has ever worked in such a setting knows you have to have sturdy, indestructible equipment, as students are really quite abusive to gear 😮! In addition to their sturdiness, as you say, the simplicity of design and ease of handling made them beginner friendly. Can’t go wrong with a clean, adjusted, and serviced K1000!

Got mine a couple months ago, but have been waaay too busy shooting Polaroids on the amazing I-2 to use it! Including a trip to Japan! I got some weak adhesive 2-sided tape from Japan. Set my Epson scanner to 1200 dpi, and went to enjoy a beer while it did its thing. 😅 The tape worked great, securely holding the photos and easily releasing them when it was time. And the scans turned out great. 👍🏼 I have a few hundred Polaroids to scan. But this holder is a godsend! Thanks, BFC, for having my back!

I have always thought that grain in film was the result of undeveloped silver halides that simply resulted no (or a greatly reduced) image in that microscopic speck of film. I'm no film chemist, so I'm open to being totally wrong about this. However, if this is the case, wouldn't 35mm be at a disadvantage re grain because, for example, a 2-micron grain on 35mm constitutes a larger percentage of image area than that same 2-micron undeveloped speck in a 6x7 image? Asking for a friend.

Brilliant presentation and well explained. Before I invest in Polaroid 600 film and store it flat in the fridge until I use it could the film be damaged in Amazon/store storage and during shipping/transportation if purchased online? Thanks again Simon UK

One of my first cameras in the 1970s - one of the best.

I personally prefer the SX-70 film but the 600 is way easier to find bundled or on sale... which never happens with the 70... I didn't mod my SX-70 but use an ND filter... it's a little annoying because when you change back you have to reapply to the film to the new pack but still works like a charm...

I got some Aurora in the first wave form Reformed Film Lab, who I think were the first to get it for distribution, and I gotta say I love it. You can see it in some of your tests here, but I think it has better skin tones than Portra while also the far better dynamic range than Lomo. I can also say it pushes to 1600 beautifully and really gets you more out of the midtones when you do that.

Yes there are some new(er) kids on the block but to me Matt Day still remains the ambassador of film photography on TH-cam even though he’s shooting more digitally nowadays. Been a fan of Mr Day since day 1 and him sort of tagging us along in the ups and downs of his life is very genuine and relatable. I hope he doesn’t stop any time soon. Love you Matt!
