Using a Power Broom for Spring Cleaning the Yard
A definite upgrade to the trusty rake, this power broom makes pretty quick work of all the gravel and debris that makes its way into your yard over the winter. Definitely not a tool that is required for yard maintenance, but it certainly saves a lot of time and backache. I for one, am very thankful that dad helps clean up the ditch so that I can mow it without throwing rocks all summer.
A couple tips:
- a mower that has 4WD makes it a lot easier to power the broom
- wear safety protection so you don't get dust or debris in your eyes/ears
- work with the wind or you'll be eating dust for days
Thanks for watching and we hope the weather is warming up where you are too!

Multiplying Your Dahlia Stock - How to Take Cuttings from Dahlias
มุมมอง 13321 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is part 2 of the process to propogate your dahlias. Once the tubers you've settled into soil have sprouted a 2-4" growth, you can take a cutting, or two, or three. I show a couple ways to take the cutting in the video, but let me know your preferred way! Then tuck your cutting into soil and over the next month or two it will develop roots and be ready to grow in your gardens. Detailed inst...
Ranunculus Update: Planting in the Tunnel
มุมมอง 85หลายเดือนก่อน
The next step in the 2024 ranunculus journey! They're going in the ground about six weeks after pre-sprouting them. We're planting in zone 4b and this tray is going under a small hoop tunnel. Ranunculus prefer cooler temperatures, so early spring is a great time to get them in the ground. From what I've heard/read they are also heavy feeders and would benefit from fertilizer throughout the seas...
Maple Syrup Season | That's A Wrap
มุมมอง 241หลายเดือนก่อน
2024 Maple Syrup Season is in the books. Another short season, but it sure was nice to have a bit less snow to plow through. All of the food, supplies and equipment are taken out of the sugar shack to be stored away during the off season or cleaned. One of the final steps is to take all of the buckets and taps off the trees and clean/sterilize them. Because the sap has a tiny amount of sugar in...
Maple Syrup Season: Collecting and Finishing Syrup
มุมมอง 238หลายเดือนก่อน
It's the last day of collecting for the 2024 season. Another short year, but the weather was really quite strange. While the season was short, it was very pleasant to tap the trees and collect when there was hardly any snow on the ground. This is what a typical day of collecting looks like, lots of helping hands, off handed commentary and food. Then on a quieter day, we show you how we finish t...
Sugar Shack Spotlight: Top 10 Things We Like the Most
มุมมอง 458หลายเดือนก่อน
We've put together a list of our Top 10 favorite things in the sugar shack (with a few honorable mentions). Some of the things make the process more convenient or comfortable, others are nice to haves or were good ideas that worked out well. Here's the Top 10, in no particular order: 1. Step down firing area 2. Electricity 3. Shopping cart 4. Wood storage area 5. Office chair 6. Windows 7. Larg...
Propogating Dahlias - Easy Way to Multiply
มุมมอง 4.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
If you're looking to grow more of the dahlia varieties you love, give propogating a try. It's not hard to do and will save you quite a bit of money. Those darn dahlias can be expensive! Supplies needed: - Potting soil - Container with drainage holes - Dahlia tubers The process does take a few weeks before you'll start to see your dahlias wake up and then put on enough growth for you to take the...
How to Get a Better Boil | Cleaning the Syrup Pan
มุมมอง 2942 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's one of the key ways we find we get a better boil...clean the syrup pan. Tim cleans out the syrup pan every other day to ensure the niter doesn't build up too much. This video shows the process of getting the pans swapped out. The cleaning part is a bit of elbow grease and time. This year was a rough one as far as 'burning' or 'boiling' a bit too much. Whether it was the weather or a dist...
It Smells Like Syrup! Our Boiling Setup
มุมมอง 6072 หลายเดือนก่อน
The sap was being collected, the fire was set, then the boiling can begin. When the wind isn't blowing too hard and the sap is really cooking, it smells like a candy factory in the sugar shack. Luckily dad has figured out all the details and nuances for this part of the process as there is a lot to juggle and keep track of. Anyone else have any 'oh shoot' or sticky floor issues this season? Tha...
The MOST Useful Piece of Sugar Shack Equipment
มุมมอง 6292 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you are looking to make your own maple syrup, this is the one piece of equipment that you must get. Well, it might not make the top 5 most useful items, but dad has found it to be useful to store and move wood around when firing the stove. He loads it from either the pile inside or from a load just outside the shack, then he can maneuver it near the stove so the door doesn't stay open longer...
Starting the Flower Season by Presprouting Ranunculus
มุมมอง 3332 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you're looking for a beautiful, showy flower that lasts well in a vase and blooms in early summer for weeks...you need ranunculus. Good news is that getting them started is pretty easy! 1. Soak the corms for 3 hours (I'd recommend 3-4 hours) 2. Add 1-2" of soil to a container 3. Place the soaked corms spikey ends down on top of the soil. If you are going to plant them out or pot them up, you...
Maple Syrup Season: Today is the Perfect Day for Tapping
มุมมอง 3102 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my favorite day of the syrup season. It probably takes a bit longer with the younger crew, but the cousins have a great time catching up and are helping more and more. Each year they need a little less hand-holding from the moms and gravitate towards following grandpa around. Its fun watching them learn the process over the years and see what memories they have from previous seasons. We...
Maple Syrup Season: Let's Get Tapping

It's the start of the 2024 Maple Syrup Season and we're excited to kick things off. First up is tapping the trees. We tap around 300 trees and hang metal and plastic buckets. This allows us to collect enough sap to keep the pan running and produce enough syrup for family and giving some to friends. Unboxing Spring Bulb Order

The leaves and weather are turning and I'm unboxing my spring bulb order. This year I ordered from Basket of Flowers Farm for my ranunculus and Colorblends for my tulip, daffodil and alliums. A few varieties I'm really excited to see are: - Violet ranunculus - this deep purple is far outside my ...

Glad you had another successful syrup season!
I don't understand. Why did you discard that sap? It was clear. You didn't taste it for fouling. Why? It would be interesting to know.
Thanks for watching. When this video was filmed we had already collected the last batch of syrup and boiled it down. The evaporator had been removed from the sugar shack for cleaning. We left the last 10 buckets on the tree so we could do a wrap up video.
@@GardenHands thanks. I'm sure others were also wondering. Thank you for sharing!
Great stuff...Thanks for sharing! Really like your outlay and especially your sap holding tank. How do you get the sap into the holding tank?
Thanks for watching! We use an 1 hp centrifugal pump that works well for us.
Great syrup shed...Congratulations! Thanks for the educational tour! How many taps do you set?
Thanks so much! We put out about 400, give or take.
Hi there. Beautiful shack. I’m building one soon. Sure would of loved to see how the cupola opens and closes. I don’t get what pushes it open. Nobody shows how they work. Sure would appreciate a pointer or two. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. We can do a video on that!
This is awesome! I gave away flowers last season and didn't know this was a thing! I am absolutely joining! Thank you!
I'm so glad you found the video! I had an amazing time with the Growing Kindness Project and highly recommend it! I know they've changed some things since the video, so I hope you can find an option that works for you! Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you so much for this video! I can't wait to try this method.
Good luck - let us know how it goes!
what brand evaporator do you recommend?
We've been really happy with the CDL.
Beauty of a shack - Happy Sappin!
Thanks so much!
Good video, wish you have a good day, Mr.
Thanks for watching. Have a great day too!
It is a beautiful sugar shack!
Thank you!!
How big is your sugar shack
It's 20 x 32 and there's a 6' porch on one side.
Great Video & Great Set Up .... Thank You For Sharing This Video!!!!
Thanks so much for the comment and watching!!
I bet more suckers will pop up in others areas.. You can possibly use a wider chip brush just pour it in a wider container😊
Agree! Wider brush would work just as well. And if I remember correctly she applied it a couple times and saw a reduction in the number of suckers that came back. Not a 100% solution.
Very nice set up . End of season do you basically empty whole unit and have to finish over gas . That would make a good video
Thanks for watching. I think they cook down what they can in the finishing pan over the arch and draw off about 5 gallons worth. Then they cook it down further on the stove. I've made a note to include that in the videos for next year!
We run a small setup round 200 taps it gets boring with just 2 people's so on weekends we get a bunch of buddies together and it's way better to have people to help and talk with
Completely agree - that's half the fun! We have a group that comes out everyday the sap runs to collect. Hope you are having a good season! Thanks for watching
Where are you located?
We're in Wisconsin. Thanks for watching.
Maple syrup used to have a smoky flavor. The stuff now is nowhere near as good as it used to be.
Interesting how it's changed. We're pretty happy with the taste, much better than store bought. Thanks for watching.
Lol great idea
He's pretty proud of his cart 😀 Thanks for watching
I can taste the maple syrup now!
We'll save you a jar - thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thanks Kris!
Nice weather. Where are you guys located?
It's been an incredibly easy winter this year for us. We're in west-central WI, about an hour east of the Twin Cities.
I am stuck in Colorado but my sugar bush is in Vermont. I have an ag exemption which means I have to sugar no matter what. Plan is to move to Vermont full time. February has been cold. So no chance of tapping. The weather was good today but it’s getting cold again tomorrow. The states surrounding Vermont have had good early flows. Some in PA were even 2.5 percent flows. I may wind up waiting out this season. I can run about 3000 taps but I simply can’t get it done this year.
One nice thing when you make charcoal when I made it in a trench or a barrel is if you’re using charcoal for a garden you can just fill the barrel clear full of water or crush it up first into quarter inch sizes and then fill it with water. Add one or two five gallon buckets of chicken manure then let it sit to be inoculated or the charcoal to absorb nutrients and then you can add it tk your garden or in the bottom of the holes before you plant your plants. But ya I’ll have to try your method cause I could use the not completely done stuff for cooking.
That's a great idea that we haven't tried yet. Thanks for sharing it, we may have to try that out the next time he gets chickens!
Glad to see y’all back at it. 😊
It's good to be back out there! Thanks for watching.
Welcome back! Keep it coming!
Thanks! We certainly will.
Excellent job explaining your process. Beautiful set up. Your family is truly blessed!
Thank you so much for watching and the kind comment!
Forecast looks good for the sap to run. Hopefully your trees are productive.
It ran for a couple days and later this weekend looks good as well. Did you guys tap trees already?
You don t have draft control on you chimney
There is a draft control knob/lever on the back of the chimney, not sure if it was in the video or not. It doesn't sound like we use it or change it too often though as most of the heat is used up before getting to the chimney. Thanks for watching.
Thanks from Russia
Thanks from Ohio
You have a quite an operation. I just subscribed to your channel. I am now retired, but used have a dairy farm. All the extra area on concrete is incredible to have. Where are you located? Check our channel out. Do you have stickers for your channel? I now live in northern Minnesota. Talk Later. I am Al
Thanks for watching and subscribing Al. We'll definitely check out your channel. Having the concrete space has been really nice for several projects and storage. We're not too far east of the Twin Cities. Hope you're having a great day.
Thank you for showing you sugar shack!! That's exactly what I was picturing for ours!
Sugar maple gives you 40 gal of sap to 1 gal of syrup. Red maples are closer to 50:1. Still tastes heavenly. I think a bit more rich and flavorful. Birch I'm told is 100:1 and has a minty taste. I haven't done them yet. That'd be a fun little experiment.
Let us know if you try birch, we haven't done that.
i could live in there
Haha, he just about does during syrup season.
How did you go with germination? Did it work having them out of direct sunlight? Or did they need the light to germinate?
It worked great, apparently they don't want light to germinate. But as soon as you start seeing green growth or the white roots growing put them under lights but not on a heat mat. Good luck and let us know how they do!
Super curious if your seeds made flowers!
They did! They actually did quite well. The Blue Bi-Color had the best germination. The flowers were just as robust as the ones that started from a corm. Recommend it!
I have a huge pile of tree scraps I've been wondering if would be better as charcoal. I'll have to try this, it seems to make a better product than the single-barrel method.
Yah, give it a try and let us know how it goes. We haven't tried a single barrel before.
One of your sons looked really bored, get them involved more. Otherwise nice job and very informative. Thank you!!
The grandsons had a long day before the video and following the camera crew around wasn't the most fun for them. They much prefer running around in the woods collecting sap. Thanks for watching.
Mind your own business otherwise nice comment
For your sliding doors, put the second latch on the inside of the post, make it a cam that hooks into the door and rotates to tighten the door against the post. We used these at a historic sawmill I worked at years ago, they were made from threaded rod, and could be tightened with a nut on the cam, cheap and secure. Beautiful building!
Thanks - that sounds like a great idea.
How do you know when to cover the holes?
We cover the holes after about 2 hours of burn time. Once you cover the holes the heat is retained and keeps heating it for a while. Once it cools down for at least 12 hours you check it and if it needs to burn more, you restart it. Make sure you cover the holes really well, pushing dirt against them. Good luck!
Great video just what I have been looking for. Lump charcoal in Ontario is $20.00 for a 20 pound bag so this will really help
Good luck!
Can’t wait to see the new additions in the spring! Agree color blend bulbs are excellent!
how is it going?-Like,what a splendid ! ;)
Great video. Thank you. My only question, is there no danger of the inner barrel exploding? I visualize possible explosive gases forming.
Good question. I believe the inner barrel lid was on quite loosely (not air tight) so there would be no chance of gas pressure building up.
Agree with @mtlefty8687, no there is not a chance of gas pressure building up.
im more curious how you farmers afford semi-trucks, trailers and tractors/heavy equipment
Happy to be you 1000th follower 😊
We're happy you are too! Thanks for subscribing!!
did you start them from seed?
I started one variety from seed and the rest were purchased corms or corms I saved from the previous year. The ones started from seed did just fine, although they take a bit longer to presprout.
Love your shed. What did you do for a foundation? Do you have any insulation in this thing? I am trying to close 50 ac.
It's a poured cement foundation and we don't have any insulation. There are battens on the siding which helped keep out quite a bit of wind, but on cool days without a fire going it's cold. Good luck!
