Spitfire's "Symphonic Woodwinds" play "Nimbus 2000" from Harry Potter
This is an excerpt from a pure woodwind-arrangement of the Nimbus 2000 theme, written by John Williams for the Harry Potter movies. Spitfire's Symphonic Woodwinds (now repackaged in the Symphonic Orchestra) were the obvious choice for this, as they were recorded at the same location that was used for the original Harry Potter score. Speaking of obvious choices, I did use some external reverb on this mockup, but I won't tell you which plugin I used - if you know your reverbs you should be able to guess this correctly even without listening to the mockup ;)

    Hi Laurin, Since this upgrade has improved legatos, and the price has dropped I am considering buying it this year. Would you recommend it as a workhorse library? Are there any weaknesses in your opinion?

    • @c-c-laurin-lenschow
      @c-c-laurin-lenschow 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, here are some thoughts on this library: With the improved legatos and the lower price this is a fantastic deal and well worth consideration. Especially if you don't have many or even any other orchestral libraries this is going to cover a lot of ground while being relatively affordable. That said, I don't think it's a flawless library. Here are some potential weaknesses: - Spitfire's short notes have notoriously inconstent timing and the update did not fix this. - AIR studios sound great, but you can't really get rid of the room sound. Even the close mics are still somewhat wet, so if you're looking for a dry orchestral sound, this is not the way to go. - The articulation list is inconsistent across different instruments. Even just within the woodwinds one instrument may have significantly less articulations than another one. - Depending on your personal taste and the music you're writing you may find that this library doesn't cover the high dynamics well enough. There's quite a bit of debate around this, but a significant portion of users is unsatisfied by the top dynamics (in most Spitfire libraries actually). - The last time I checked this update broke the time machine patches. This is especially sad because the strings don't have Staccato and now the workaround of stretching the Spiccatos has become unusable. I hope this helps - let me know if you have any further questions!

      @@c-c-laurin-lenschowThank you so much for your detailed reply. I already have HOOPUS, but I don't find the longs of the strings to be emotionally grabbing on swells. I have the Originals intimate strings and this sounds closer to what I'm after. I was looking at Albion One in the recent sale, However I don't like being limited to ensemble patches, and prefer individual sections. I don't worry so much about shorts, as I'm doing slow background music. I prefer a wet sound so I don't have to add reverb. Are you happy with the legato now that they have updated it?

    • @c-c-laurin-lenschow
      @c-c-laurin-lenschow 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Gardener7 If you like the sound of AIR and you want to use it for slow background music SSO should work well for you I think. The updated legatos are nice - not the very best I've ever heard but certainly very usable. If you like Originals Intimate Strings you could also look into Albion Loegria, which is where the recordings from Intimate Strings were sourced from (iirc). It only has ensemble patches, but it would be like having more of Intimate Strings at a significantly lower price than SSO. ...I also don't like (most) ensemble patches though, so if you want to go for SSO I could completely understand that :)

      Fair enough - and yeah, tight shorts are not exactly Spitfire's strong suit. Every short articulation in this mockup was programmed right on the grid, so if something seems too loose it's because of the way the samples were edited.

    Lovely as always Laurin! ❤ Congrats on 1000 subscribers mate. I’d love to see some woodwinds special, while we’re on that topic anyway. How about trying to find some uses for woodwind samples that were recorded dry? SstW come to mind, but there are more - the Claire series for instance - or the Chris Hein ones. There must be some examples of film- or anime scores that have a “drier” sound aesthetic? I sometimes wonder who uses Spitfire’s studio series, especially the winds and brass. And for what type of cues.

    It may be harsh but in all honesty- the percussion from ARO Orchestral foundations sounds a lot like the Originals version from Spitfire's old Albion, which is a 30€ library. That bright Abbey road tone is obviously present but the mics required to get it lends to the washy mud, like the Originals percussion. Different mics probably solves that mixing issue but then you kind of lose on the secondary reason for getting the library in the first place; that it sounds like Abbey Road. Primary function of being a sketching tool is still undisputed though. It's easy, it's quick, it's got all the essentials. It's a true successor to the idea of Albion One but I think ARO does it much better. Taking orchestration out of the equation is annoying but that isn't the point. The percussion could have been a bit more in-depth though, I don't think people would complain over an extra gigabyte or so.

    • @talnomix3164
      @talnomix3164 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i dont agree on this, Albion sounds very different. the bass drum, the snares and some more things are very differnt. More mics, better sound overall and the room tone of course.

      @@talnomix3164 As a whole yes, but the ARO foundations percussion remains reminiscent of the Originals percussions. That's just the percussion though, everything else in ARO sounds obviously different.

    I think you've done a great job so far! I absolutely love this song. I myself am a composer and arranger of my favorite film scores. I did a complete arrangement of this song myself. I'd love for you to hear it! th-cam.com/video/PaLlPQfZ9PA/w-d-xo.html

    As per your request for thoughts on the sound of the trumpets @12:30, I would argue that the Berlin Brass Trumpets do indeed sound more classical. I had my doubts about them as you were simply comparing the individual sound of them to the Tom Holkenborg trumpets, but once you played them in the final mix, I gotta say I love the sound of the Berlin Brass trumpets better. In terms of realism, especially in regards to sounding as similar to the original soundtrack recording as possible, the sound of the trumpets in the full mix is as close to the sound of the original track as I think you can get it. So, long story short, my vote is with the Berlin Brass in terms of better sound quality, and better realism in comparison with the recording from the original score. Keep it up, I love this track!

    So, after working with SSO for a couple years now I'd have to say what they say in the manual is spot on. I'd only use tightness for playing notes in and turn tightness to 0% for playback/bounce however you also need to know the negative delays which I took a lot of time to find for each short. This is especially important for strings because, yes, they sound quite bad at anything beyond 50% tightness. However, the non random RR is quite noticeable and unfortunately using the "borrow neighbor RR" toggle creates pitch issues while adding more fake random. For long straight 16ths, I highly recommend their timed tremolo patches as they are quite useful for many scenarios.

      Useful tipps for someone like me considering buying SSO!

      @BluemountScore for sure! It is really no different than any other complex library. But, if you want demos to come out like Andy Blaney, it takes a lot of tweaking and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of every patch. Even then getting demos to come out like Andy Blaney's is far easier said than actually accomplished lol, but for sure takes a careful ear and lots of note adjustment just like any other library. With 800+ articulations though (across all instruments) it is a workhorse library and with time and listening can be shaped to make some good film score sounding compositions. It all just comes down to whether you like the sound or not.

    0:18 So....the problem with string's 16s in pulse is never ending story......

    I agree with you, RR randomization as an option would be a welcome and rather easy "workaround" to the issues shown here. Thank you for the video!

    Spitfire's short articulations often suffer from inconsistent timing across round robins, so this video is a technical test of how well they hold up. The aim of this video is not to create a musical, realistic or somewhat pleasing performance but to see how consistent the editing of these short articulations is. Various things can be learned from this video; here are a few things that you may want to pay attention to: 0:18 - 0:58 the strings start to stumble at higher dynamics 2:15 - 2:24 the dynamics of the Trumpets a2 feel quite uneven at high dynamics 2:43 - 3:02 turning up the tightness slider for the Horns a2 notably cuts into the samples... 3:02 - 3:22 ...while it doesn't seem to have any effect on the Trumpets a2, thus working inconsistantly across instruments.

    I don't know exactly which type of audio magic Andy Blaney did with editing but the brass in general and performance legatos are noticeably improved. I popped the new patches into old sessions I was having problems in and bam, most of the problems are gone. There are a few tweaks still needed to get a good sound on some legato lines but this is normal level with every sample library. All the weird random script glitches I got on certain lines disappeared. No more random "whooshing"

    Wow, those string runs sound very nice to me! And the tone of the strings and brass sound really good to me. I do feel like I can hear some bad crossfades but nothing that ruins the sound. In a mix I think it would be fine.
