  • This has been requested by a lot of you, so I hope you'll enjoy this breakdown of my recent mockup of "This is Berk". This is my first time recording a voiceover, so please excuse anything that's not up to the standards of other creators yet. I'm always asking for feedback but this time it's even more important than usual because this video is a bit of a stray from my usual content. I can definitely imagine making more of these breakdown videos in the future (hopefully I'll get a little more confident and comfortable doing voiceovers when I have some practice), so make sure to let me know if you'd like to see them or if you want me to focus on shorter videos with subtitles.

Fantastic channel Laurin!!😊 Here’s a new subscriber - really glad to have found you here!;) Thanks a lot for this breakdown - very informative! The mockup is fabulous!!👏 I‘m also a great fan of Orchestral Tools - still missing the THB… but I‘m sure there will be an upcoming sale soon!;) I‘m really impressed by your passion to buy a Sopilka and perform it live - Awesome!!😅

Thank you so much! I already have a very long list of pieces I want to do mockups of, so more is definitely on the way :)

Cool mockup! I don't think you need to worry about the voiceover. We hear you loud and clear. For the video structure itself, I personally wouldn't mind spending a bit of time on the percussion at all, even if the video becomes 50 mins long because of it. There aren't exactly as many guides for (cinematic) percussion on YT as there are for strings and brass.
The way you clearly explain what each little element contributes to the mix is amazing.
PS. The timbre of the Berlin Brass's trumpets fit the arrangement much better, even if it's lower in volume. JXL Sounds far too sharp.

Thank you for the feedback and for your kind words! I'll make sure to spend more time on percussion if/when I do a breakdown video for a piece that features a lot of it.

As per your request for thoughts on the sound of the trumpets @12:30, I would argue that the Berlin Brass Trumpets do indeed sound more classical. I had my doubts about them as you were simply comparing the individual sound of them to the Tom Holkenborg trumpets, but once you played them in the final mix, I gotta say I love the sound of the Berlin Brass trumpets better. In terms of realism, especially in regards to sounding as similar to the original soundtrack recording as possible, the sound of the trumpets in the full mix is as close to the sound of the original track as I think you can get it. So, long story short, my vote is with the Berlin Brass in terms of better sound quality, and better realism in comparison with the recording from the original score. Keep it up, I love this track!

great Job on the mockup and the video - i have been asked previously to do what you have done and i wasnt brave enough, well done!! On your request for feedback on brass the Berlin brass would be my preference for the short stuff - but in reality i would probably try layering both libraries and pushing the JXL brass back a bit in the mix, as it is tighter than the Berlin (but a bit to 'razzy') where as the Berlin has more character for me.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for the feedback! Layering the two libraries might be the ideal solution, I'll do some experiments :)

I really appreciated hearing you speak in this video. As I listened, I tried to lookup the libraries I was not familiar with, or had not looked at for a while. It would be nice to get a list of the products used. Price points of some of the libraries have kept me away from them. The OT Berlin series has a steep price point, and I have been working with their Support team recently to identify an issue with their Sine Player on my WIndows computer. The ERA II library was one I had not heard of and have put into a list of possible future purchases. I know that this had to be a huge amount of work - I would love to learn how long it took to create. I read a comment about the brass - and the OT Brass does sound more classical, and the Holkenberg does sound too "Raspy" - but you seem to have an ear to pick out the details of the tone that you are looking for. Thank you for putting in the work on this. I look forward to more.

Thank you for the feedback and for your kind words! I've thought about putting a list of the libraries I used in the top comment but tbh I'm afraid that if I did many people wouldn't actually watch the video and the time I spent on it would go to waste. However, if you couldn't find a specific library I mentioned or have any other questions of that nature I'll be happy to answer them!
Regarding the time I spent working on this mockup: This is really hard to estimate. What I can say is that I broke the piece down into sections of 40-70 seconds (as you might have seen if you've been following the channel for a while), tackling one of them per month. I was done after five months, working on it maybe 15-20 hours per month, so that would make 75-100 hours total (which is a very rough estimate; might be off by quite a few hours in either direction). I'd guess at least two thirds of that time were spent with note input - I clicked in every single note in this mockup (except the Sopilka of course).

Ableton Live only lets you export one midi clip at a time so I'm afraid I won't be able to help you - I'd have to export and share more than a hundred of individual files.
