  • Here's a quick comparison of the three most popular low strings patches out there: Low Strings from "Albion One", "Metropolis Ark 1" and "Scoring Selections: Legendary Low Strings".
All patches are at their default settings and there was no external processing with the exception of some rough volume matching I did by ear.

I'm not a Musician but Legendary Low Strings sound best for me.

Great comparison. Happy to hear the Legendary Low Strings clearly sounding best. The other libs sound like there's a poorly set high-pass filter used, while also sounding more "sampled". Great job by Spitfire!

Legendary Low Strings is the clear winner for me. Deep bass and clarity of sound even in the chords. Thank you for the comparison video.

A few points from a soundtrack composer:
    1) I have all these and many more because Lord of the Rings and the Bourne Codependency (or wev) require different sounds.
    2) FILM strings are intentionally different. There is a film “sound” that you’ll be rejected over if you don’t have it. Usually con sordino and big.
    3) every string work I am proud of has layered strings. Not a wall of strings but carefully adding a little of this and that here and there to make a string sound for that song.

I have all 3 and all sound good but Abbey Road One sounds the most realistic due to having more dynamic range. They all have their uses in different projects though.

Just a comment: These comparisons would be even more useful if you adjust the gain to the same volume so that we can compare apples with apples.

Thank you for the feedback! I am aware of this issue but I don't think it's as easily fixeable as you're suggesting. The problem is the different dynamic range of the various libraries. For a somewhat objective comparison that is not dependant on my skill at working with the different libraries I usually use the same midi for the libraries I am comparing. However, a CC1 value of e.g. 23 can mean different things for different libraries. The low strings from Metropolis Ark 1 only have two dynamics - f and fff. Spitfire libraries on the other hand are notoriously quiet and both Albion 1 and Legendary Low Strings are covering the entire dynamic range, so even if you volume-match the top dynamics they would be much quieter for the lower half of the modwheel. Therefore accurate volume-matching could only be done by using heavy compression, which would make the comparison unfair again. That's why I only do some rough volume matching by ear and don't obsess about equal volume.
I apologize for the somewhat clumsy explanation (English is not my first language), I hope it made sense anyway! :)

Can I suggest using the Hornet Normalizer insert. It only costs $9.99 and has a free trial. Once you have set the gain to produce the same db for every track volume you can use the same CC values on all tracks for the comparison.

@@visualmatrix Again, wouldn't this mess with the dynamics? The dynamics of a real performance are a combination of timbral and volume changes. Noramlizing the tracks so that they all stay at the same db would eliminate that second part and result in pianissimo and fortissimo being played at the same physical volume. I don't think this method would result in an accurate representation of the libraries.

Normalise (gainstage) at the top dynamic so that you have common level to start you comparison from.Any dynamic fluctuation will then be relative to the gainstaged level.

@@visualmatrix That sounds reasonable, I'll look into it - thanks for the suggestion!
