  • Here's a quick comparison between three harp libraries, using a mockup of "Across the Stars" that I made some time ago. The three versions are volume matched (at the top dynamic) and don't use any external processing. Check the timestamps below for details:
    0:00 Intro
    0:09 CineHarps
    0:59 Pacific Ensembe Strings Harp
    1:52 Spitfire Symphonic Harp
    2:45 CineHarps in context
(...sorry for the little audio-hickup shortly before the three-minute-mark, it's caused by OBS and not the samples or my DAW.)

Cool to see a harp comparison since there aren't many out there. I think I prefer CineHarps in this particular example, with the Spitfire harp coming in 2nd. I agree with others that the Pacific Strings Harp has kind of a weird mix.

Thank you for the comparison, the (2015) SpitFire Harp is not a library that I have not added to my collection. There have been two comments I agree with - the Cineharp does sound panned left - maybe to emulate you playing the instrument - a right handed player may have it next to their left ear. I own the Pacific Strings as well, and I loaded it to take a listen and noticed that when you play a single note - it does sound on the keystroke and then like another sample kicks in - almost a room echo. I noticed that the default setting of the "Sample offset" is -140 - which I thought might be a large number - there is a dropdown to use -80 - that helped and something that I have seen mentioned in some places for sample libraries. I also played with turning of the "AB" mic and that left only the close mic - which also helped. Since I also have the Performance Samples Vista - that library also contains a Bonus Content harp - without the sample offset - however that too has some sample anomalies on performing; both are extras and not what we purchased the library for. Another Library for Harps from Spitfire that I did purchase was the Sameul Sim Chrysalis - which uses the harp as the basis of sound design - but does have a nice "normal" patch that could be tried for this type of comparison - The Studio Harp Folder - Long Normale. The Spitfire BBC Orchestra Harp with the array of microphones available makes it my current choice for the harp samples.

It really has to be studied how CineSamples got so many instruments and sections right so early that they still hold up today.
Does the mix of the Pacific harp sound strange to you? It's sounds like a close mic was panned to the left while a tree setup was panned to the right.

Yeah, they did some really great work!
I think I hear what you mean - I just double checked to make sure I did the libary justice. I did not change the default mic & panning settings, so this is set up the way Performance Samples intended. It's worth noting though that the Harp from Pacific Strings is labelled and marketed as free "bonus content" for what I think is a pretty amazing symphonic strings library, so if it doesn't quite hold up against these two flagships that's not a big issue imo.
