Does insulin REALLY make you gain weight?
One of the main barriers to starting insulin is the notion that people gain weight. But is this really true and if so, why does this happen?
In this video I demonstrate how insulin works and why it might not necessarily be the insulin that is causing you to gain weight.

    For me, novo rapid doesn’t even work untill about 1.5 hrs after i take it, which causes me all kinds of ups and downs because my sugar goes up super fast while the insulin takes time. So what happens is i take insulin for my meal then i eat and my sugars sky rocket, then i panic and take m ore insulin , then the first set of insulin kicks in and my sugars start to lower, then the second set of insulin kicks in and i have a low, then i drink a ton of juice (because im in panic mode) , then when my sugars start to rise again i take more insulin, and in about 1.5/2hrs it kicks in. I have yet to find an insulin that works as fast as these guys say it does.. if you listen to them you in for a life of ups and downs.. my biggest help with diabetes is my dexcon sensor..

    💥 Type 2 diabetes is caused basically by a high carb diet. With time, the body develops insulin resistance, and glucose can't enter the cells, and build up, causing all kinds of problems of diabetes. You need to end insulin resistance, by not ingesting carbohydrates, or keeping it to a minimal. While glucose levels are at the minimal, forces the body to run on ketones, which is a secondary path for the body to get energy, derived from fat and protein, that's why a ketogenic diet is good for type 2 diabetes. As time passes by, the body gradually reverses insulin resistance. But a wise person should never engage on a high carb diet again. ❤

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Dihelson Thanks for the comment But what you say isn’t accurate High carb diet doesn’t cause diabetes at all. Poor overall lifestyle and being overweight causes type 2 diabetes for the majority of people. In fact, the evidence is very clear. If you choose the right type of carbs and follow a general Mediterranean style diet the incidents of type 2 diabetes go down - basically every study looking at this shows this time and time and time again.

    I wish people would move away from calling it a 3 month average. It's a weighted average. Blood cells don't wait until you have an A1c test then all replace themselves. Since the majority of the blood cells will have been replaced from 3 months ago and fewer from 2-3 months ago, it's weighted to the most recent month or so.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey thanks for the comment That’s correct it is weighted for the most recent month. But why over complicate it when explaining it to patients ? Sometimes just keeping it simple is easiest and ultimately it doesn’t make much difference as regardless you wouldn’t repeat it more regularly than every 3 months as a minimum.

I was just wondering - will the "Bolus" Insulin (After Meal Insulin) also cause you to gain weight (or) is it only the "Basal" (Slow & Long Acting Insulin) that will cause you to gain weight? I know you told me in your previous reply that I should not go on insulin just to gain weight. As far as food goes, can you recommend which foods I should eat to gain weight that has low carbs? Thanks - Melanie.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Melanie All insulin has a small anabolic effect - makes you gain some weight. It’s hard to advise on specific circumstances over TH-cam as I know nothing about your case. I can only do that in a formal appointment unfortunately. It’s not safe and would likely violate our code of conduct. As a general rule, high fat will help you gain weight but if you’re reducing carbs at the same time, you may find the calories balance out. So to gain weight, typically you need to eat more overall. But I wouldn’t want to tell you that only to find I then make your diabetes worse for example So id need full context I do offer 1:1 appointments because it’s the only way I can advise specifically to you. Then you can have an undisturbed sleep? Or take it in the morning when you get home before going to sleep. There’s no optimal time really. If you need to move the dose speak to your diabetes team however one easy way to do this it is to take it 2 hrs earlier each day until you arrive at the desired time. All seems very weird. Yes, for running I like to start a little higher around 120mg/dl for a 6-8k run. For sports like tennis starting around 100mg is more than enough since bloodsugars rise during exercise.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Alex Thanks for the comment. I’d say each to their own. Which I think I say in either this or other videos. The key is finding what your body does. These are general guidelines. We wouldn’t recommend starting at 100 here as general advice. Leaves very little margin of error if the sugars do anything unexpected. Yes they may rise initially after more intense exercise but what’s the benefit of having them so tight? I can’t think of a reason why you’d need such tight control going into the session so for me the downside (hypo) is much greater than the upside (trying to maintain air tight glucose control) when in reality if your sugars were even as high as 216 for a short time due to intense exercise, it’s going to make very little difference clinically. Especially as after exercise, the exercise effect will start to bring them back down afterwards. So for us, we’d recommend as a rule, Starting a bit higher as highs, even if the glucose shoots up, are generally easier and more comfortable to deal with than lows and especially unexpected lows. And if you start tight in the first place, there’s more potential for hypos after exercise when the inevitable decline comes later. Then you’re having to feed yourself. Of course, if you’re on pump, this advice could be different as you can adjust the pump more accurately - though even pumps on exercise mode aim for around 8 150ish) and the hybrid closed loops even turn off your insulin if you go near a hypo and they still run your glucose a little higher around exercise. So it’s fine tuning for yourself which is what you’ve done by the sounds of it 👍

    Hi Mark. I have not gotten my C-Peptide test done yet. I will do it before my next appt. with my endocrinologist in July. "If" the C-Peptide test confirms that I have Type 2 diabetes & my pancreas is still producing insulin (hopefully it will be the case) , if I take insulin, will it help we "regain" my weight? Back in 2013 my weight was between 115lbs-120lbs. So if I ask my endocrinlogist to "put me on insulin" will I "get back" that weight range of 115lbs-120lbs? Could you kindly respond ? Thanks, Melanie.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Melanie Thanks for the comment. I hate to say it but I can’t advise on this over TH-cam I’m afraid. Not without a detailed view of your case. So I’d speak with your endocrinologist. If you’re not on insulin yet and walking around ok, you’ve overwhelming have type 2 diabetes. A c-peptide isn’t always needed as sometimes the presentation of the diabetes is fairly obvious. However, if your presentation is a bit more precarious, then it may very well be justified. So yes, have a chat with ya team. And the fact your body weight is fairly low, it may very well be justified👍 One thing I would say is I wouldn’t use insulin as a mechanism to gain weight I.e. don’t just go on insulin to gain weight if there’s other options available. However, if your glucose levels have been high for a while, then yes, going on insulin does help gain weight as all those glucose calories start to be absorbed. Whereas before, they would have been peed out Keep us updated 🙏

      Hey Thanks for the comment In my opinion I don’t think your doctor should really be diagnosing off point of care finger prick tests. They can form an idea of where your glucose levels might be on average it no one will know for sure until you get a HbA1c. This is the best way to diagnose where your glucose levels are 4-11 also depends on when you test your glucose levels, there are reference ranges for fasting and 1-2 hrs after eating - which would be considered normal - but even people without diabetes can have higher readings 1 hr after eating if they really carb load So my advice Get a HbA1c and then you’ll know exactly where you It’s a bit disappointing they’ve made you get a glucose meter and test your sugars - to have to prick ya finger regularly when they could just do a HbA1c Hope that helps

    Why eating carbs? It's exactly what's causing Dt2.

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey standom Eating carbs doesn’t cause T2dm Overall dietary patterns and lifestyle lead to it for 80% of people that get it. But there’s also other reasons you get it - like age and genetics (not everyone that is elderly or overweight has t2dm) Plenty of healthy people - elite athletes being one - eat carbs just fine

      @@diabetesdietguy Hmm, I've seen people quit carbs, switch to red meat and fat, and their diabetes disappears. I myself was 115 kg, when I cut out all of them I dropped down to 75 kg. No more fatty liver and RA; the BG is between 3,3 -5,5.. Labs are fine. Moderately active, able to exercise as never before.. Cravings are gone.. Before I was showing signs of so called "pre-diabetes" My n=1

      @@standom2390 good job mate that’s awesome But also appreciate I’ve seen probably a lot more people thank most - as it’s my full time job and has been for a decade and I’ve seen the same results with Mediterranean, paleo, vegan, vegetarian, durken and the list goes on. I’ve also seen millions of people not develop diabetes who eat carbs but they have an overall healthy lifestyle. So being metabolic unhealthy is a reflection of the overall dietary pattern. Not this food or that food in isolation

    Unfortunately this guy doesn't understand diabetes (T2) as well as he thinks he does. He sees it as a disease of high glucose. He doesn't seem to understand that it is a disease caused by insulin resistance, and that there is no insulin resistance without hyperinsulinemia - (high levels of insulin). That is why the insulin doesn't work so well anymore. Because with T2DM there is so much insulin sloshing about in the body already, your cells do not respond to it well anymore. Giving yet more insulin will make the problem WORSE. The real expert in this field is Professor Ben Bikman. As Ben says, giving more insulin to an already hyperinsulinemic person (who is already insulin resistant) will make them fatter, sicker and kill them sooner. The way to fix the disease is ABSOLUTELY NOT to see it as a disease of high glucose. High glucose is simply a symptom of insulin resistance. It is to understand T2DM is a disease of high insulin. You must REDUCE INSULIN. Only a fool would prescribe more insulin. The way to reduce insulin is simple. Cut out carbohydrate, do not eat sugar, grains, rice, pasta, pulses, bread, potatoes starchy veg, fruit, (or eat in extremely sparing amounts, if you must) certainly no fruit juice, do not eat seed oil, such as vegetable oil. Eat all diary, meat, green leafy vegetables, avocado. So all you people who have commented that on insulin you cannot lose weight - you're right. Insulin is a hormone of energy storage. You already have too much insulin in your body and your doctor thinks it's a good idea to give you more DUH!. You CANNOT burn fat in the presence of elevated insulin. Your insulin must be low to burn fat. If you take additional insulin YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT, YOU WILL GET SICKER, YOU WILL DIE SOONER and no amount of 'healthy' dietary intervention will prevent that. I implore you to listen to an expert. Listen to Ben Bikman.

    You're saying about 150g carbs/day AND counting vegetables? 🤯

    • @diabetesdietguy
      @diabetesdietguy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thats diabetes UK recommendation if we’re going to put a number on it Vegetables don’t have much in them but you can’t say 150/200/250g or whatever number you want really and then just ignore some sources of carbs. That said, if vegetables were the main food group for you at most meals - half the meal, you’d be doing just fine

      @@diabetesdietguy Thank you! Diabetes type2: I need to lose weight but can't. I eat about 200g carbs/day. I was eating 150g/day but felt really crappy. I don't eat any very high glycemic carbs. Basically, my main carbs are whole wheat bread and pasta, a little rice, and beans. I fill up on vegetables and chicken broth. I eat a lot of protein. Don't we need to eat complex carbs to avoid low blood sugar and going hypoglycemic?

      @@seans7228hard to advise really Shaun as there’s a lot of individual circumstances going on here. If you feel better on 200g and your glucose levels are good, then carry on. 150g would normally be enough to sustain you but it depends on what else you’re doing. For reference the normal amount of carbs outside of diabetes is around 280g a day. That helps ensue you hit your fibre targets but you wouldn’t want it at the expense of high sugars. No guarantees you get high sugars on that though. It’s very individual. It also depends on your meds if any. Especially with regards to hypos. So it’s hard to give specific advice outside of a consultation where I’d spend an hour specially getting too now you’re individual circumstances. Then it’s easier to tailor advice. Not a sales pitch, but if you would want that, check out my website diabetes diet guy.com. But it’s just difficult I’m afraid to advise specifically over TH-cam.

      Incorrect For type 1 = match insulin to carbs Type 2 = eat an overall balanced diet including carbs and you’ll be fine Carbs aren’t bad. If you have type 2 diabetes for 90% of people, being overweight and/or unfit is the reason your body might struggle with carbs So to just say - oh it’s the carbs fault - doesn’t address the reason diabetes happens in the first place Carbs causing high glucose glucose is wrong unfortunately. If most people were normal weight, exercising an healthy carbs would cause no problems So to cut out carbs is to accept the diabetes diagnosis as if it’s inevitable which for 90% is wrong. Address the reason for diabetes in the first first place (minus the 10% for old age or surgery - and you can eat carb like everyone else) And so you can eat meal like this as long as you’re consistent with your diet and being healthy overall
