Buckeye Classics Episode 103 74 MSU
1995 Notre Dame
On September 30th, 1995, two of college football’s most powerful and storied programs met in Ohio Stadium to renew a rivalry left dormant for almost 60 years. Their previous battle in the Horseshoe had been called the greatest game in the first 50 years of college football, but victory that day was with the Irish. The return engagement offered John Cooper’s Buckeyes a chance for revenge and their own place in Buckeye history.

Woody Hayes Part 1 Combustible yet compassionate. Divisive but devoted. Fiery and controversial yet eloquent and beloved. Such extremes were the essence of Woody Hayes, who for 28 seasons as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, towered over the college football landscape in a reign that saw both triumph and turmoil. In that time, perhaps no other coach in collegiate sports made a more dramati...

มุมมอง 9K7 ปีที่แล้ว
1996 Season At the start of Ohio State’s 1996 season, the prevailing mood amongst fans and experts was one of hope, tinged with uncertainty. NFL Network did a special on the all-time NFL 100 team, hosted by Rich Eisen. Coach Paul Brown was the first-named person by Bill Belichick and Jim Brown. Before Paul Brown, football was guys running over lines painted on a field. Only the myriad player-safety rules (including the forward pass) have had a bigger influence on the original game.

Imagine if the greats like Warfield bob hayes, or “Bambi” could run free in the defensive backfield and not get hit after 5 yards and now they have to soft tackle them.

The faculty decision to turn down the '61 Rose Bowl was actually the result of a culmination of events over the previous decade or so. From the West Point cheating and basketball point shaving scandals of '48 - '51, the de-emphasis of major sports by the Ivy League schools in '54, and the slush fund revelations at many schools in '57-'59, the OSU faculty had more than enough ammunition to aim at the athletic department. Combine the non-renewal of the Rose Bowl contract by Big Ten members with the stunning success of OSU athletics between, say, '58 - '62 (both team and individual, you can look it up), the faculty had a window to vent its' displeasure - and it did.The long term result is what we see today at virtually every school : the separation of the athletic department from the wider university, run by the athletic director, with a semi-arms length relation to the chancellor/president, who can only hope that no felony or scandal brings taint or besmirchment to the entity as a whole.

A bunch of intellectual snobs who haven’t even touched a pigskin shouldn’t get to decide that shit. Worried about the educational value of going to the Rose Bowl? Bitch, it’s on New Years Day, which last time I checked is winter break in college. Sounds more like they just wanted to have a power trip over a program that’s more popular than they’ll ever be. Thank God this doesn’t happen anymore.

I was a Boiler and at that game. Some fellow students and I came over the night before and met some friendly Buckeye students at a bar who lived in a big house and told we could sleep over there if we promised to stay Saturday night for a party. Hell yes! We expected to be celebrating a Boiler win, but not so! OSU really controlled us, I don't think Keyes wanted to line up against Tatum in the second half, we couldn't get anything going, shut out 13-0!! Long Saturday night and drive home Sunday. But the guys we met at OSU were great hosts!
