  • 1995 Notre Dame
    On September 30th, 1995, two of college football’s most powerful and storied programs met in Ohio Stadium to renew a rivalry left dormant for almost 60 years. Their previous battle in the Horseshoe had been called the greatest game in the first 50 years of college football, but victory that day was with the Irish. The return engagement offered John Cooper’s Buckeyes a chance for revenge and their own place in Buckeye history.

    A fallout from this game was that Woody was so mad that he turned MSU over to NCAA for minor recruiting violations. MSU fought it and was slapped with 3 years probation. This prevented MSU from going to the Rose Bowl for the '78 season and because of the accompanying television ban nobody remembers Kirk Gibson as an All American football player and not just a guy who hit a memorable home run.

    I was st that game as a MSU senior. Yes, the campus was pumped for that game. After the I went home and joyously honked when we passed motor homes with Ohio plates on east bound I-96. Irony, the next fall I was attending OSU as a graduate student.

      During my four years at MSU we were 0-4 against ND & UM, but 3-1 against OSU.

    I was a 13 year old Buckeye fan living in East Lansing when this game was played. It was one of the best college games I've ever watched. I was very upset this Archie Griffin team lost. But there are a couple points not covered here.
    First, Michigan State was not a "mediocre" team. They had won multiple games in a row coming in, including the week prior at Wisconsin. The Badgers had a good squad and had beaten Nebraska earlier that year.
    Also, MSU's 3 losses were two close ones against ND (defending NC) and Mich, in Ann Arbor. They were blown out in a night game on the Coast by UCLA. The same team that beat OSU the next year in the Rose Bowl. MSU had also beaten Syracuse earlier. Had they played a cup cake schedule they would have been 6 and 2 or 7 and 1 coming in.
    Also, the first play on OSU's final drive was intercepted. If replays existed there would not have been this final ending.
    Lastly, Steve Luke was correct about the atmosphere. Because of MSU's win streak coming in, the whole town was fired up about this game, all week long. Coach Stoltz said, "Darn right we've got a chance." The atmosphere in E.L. for his game is unforgettable. Hollywood couldn't have scripted it better.

    Today, the fans would never be allowed on the field. Case in point 9:21. Crazy the way the MSU players jumped on top of fans after that TD.

    I clearly recall that day and that game. I was 8 years old and playing sandlot football when me and my brothers went inside to watch the Buckeyes. I recall my oldest brother saying "Oh this will be another blowout!" Even at a young age though, I could see that Michigan State was playing above themselves as both their team and their crowd just seemed to sense that something was afoot. It really was weird. It was like it was ordained as the year prior Ohio State had beat the living shit out of them 35-0. That fucking Michigan State though, always rises up when Buckeyes come to town. Its like they game plan all year for that game! I remember us scoring at the end and the refs saying "no"! The whole state of Ohio erupted! Everybody felt the refs had robbed us if for nothing else because they hated Ohio State and Woody.

      The refs helped Woody in this one because the play before Griffin's 31 yard sitter was an interception. It was ruled such until another came and waved it off.

    I remember watching on TV with my Dad, who hated Hayes. By the end of the game, we both felt a little sorry for him; not because they lost but because we both thought Woody was going to vapor lock somewhere on the field!

    One thing is very clear...the Spartans intentionally delayed the game...and the officials let them get away with it. You can see #11 for the Spartans actually lay down on top of a guy behind the line of scrimmage well after the play is over and #11 wasn't even in on the tackle.
    Today, officials make guys get off the pile quicker and stop the clock if they don't get up more quickly. MSU knew Ohio State was likely to score on the next play and intentionally delayed the game to run the clock out.

    • @bradleyholt9805
      @bradleyholt9805 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The refs should have stopped the clock briefly to let them un pile. However, on the first play of that drive Terry Mc Clowery of Michigan State intercepted a Corny Greene pass. It was wrongly overruled incomplete. Replays then confirmed it. If reviews were in place then we wouldn't have had this classic. Also, OSU bungled the clock. They got off only one play in 29 seconds. Woody arrogance??

    The 70s was messed up, going 10 0 1 and no bowl games. Too many politics like this game cost Michigan and Ohio state several national championships.

    • @ericc2083
      @ericc2083 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's see; OSU had a chance at the National Championship in the Rose Bowl 4 times in the 70's: '72, '74, '75 and '79 seasons...and lost them all. Michigan had a chance in '71 and '78...lost them both. They had plenty of chances, but couldn't compete with the West Coast...except in '73. 1-9 speaks for itself.

    • @nathaniellathy6559

      Michigan could have been voted No. 1 in 73 and 74. Ohio State could have been voted No. 1 in 70 (based on regular season) and 73.

    • @bradleyholt9805

      The politics then kept other deserving Big Ten teams out of bowl games. This helped OSU because it stymied the recruiting efforts of these other schools, IMO.

    What they are not telling you about Woody Hayes in this piece is that Hayes chased after the officials and was banging on the their locker room door (they had already left the stadium). Then, after Wayne Duke told him that Michigan State won the football game, Coach Hayes proceeded to destroy anything breakable in the coach's room at Spartan Stadium, and did thousands of dollars worth of damage. His players in this piece are covering for a man who was completely unstrung--which he showed later in a game against Clemson in 1978, when after a Clemson player intercepted a pass--essentially ending the game--Hayes walked up to the kid and savagely punched him in the face. The man was not well. Michigan State won that game fair and square--there are photos that show the head referee waiving off the last play before the ball was snapped. There is no controversy except in the minds of OSU fans who cannot accept the fact that Michigan State came to play that day, and their team didn't. Hayes was right about one thing that this documentary points out: when you come to Spartan Stadium to play football, you'd better come ready to play or bad things will happen to you.

      Dude, your analysis is biased. Some of it is right. Its true that Woody was not a very stable guy. He was a loose cannon. I don't believe when Griffin says it was usually an act. He was legitimately nuts. As for the Clemson play, you are exaggerating. What happened was the player intercepted the pass and then was taunting the OSU player. He didn't just lose the game and then randomly swing on the guy. The guy was taunting the OSU player saying "Ohio State sucks." Next, not sure how you can call that a savage punch to the face. The guy had his helmet and face mask on. The punch hit his mask and probably hurt Hayes' hand more. But I agree he was a wack job.
      As for this game, Ohio State only had itself to blame, but they definitely got screwed on the last play. Subsequent analysis showed there was still almost 2 seconds left when the ball was snapped. Just saying. It was a bullshit call.

    • @michiganman6410
      @michiganman6410 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonyiacomi4822 agree, Hayes only became "unhinged" after the Natty started to evade him....in heartbreaking losses...the 1969 loss to UM, the 1971 Rose Bowl loss to Stanford, and the UCLA loss in the 1976 Rose 🌹Bowl.
      Furthermore, on the next to last play the MSU players laid and held onto the OSU players wasting precious seconds for the final play...
      But what was most devastating for OSU..."Big" Pete Johnson was in Woody's doghouse...and Champ Henson was used instead....Pete would have scored easily with no controversy!!
      But what was funny, Woody was so pissed about the outcome....Woody exposed MSU for numerous recruiting violations to the NCAA...sending their program into a downward spiral for years to come!
      OSU got ROBBED!!!!!
