The 1973 Ohio State Buckeyes were one of the most dominant and decorated teams in the history of college football. Led by a brutalizing defense that surrendered just 63 points all year, the Buckeyes ran roughshod over every team but one.
But that one came in a hard-fought tie in one of the most famous and controversial Ohio State - Michigan games ever. The game prevented the Buckeyes from a perfect season and set the stage for one of the Big Ten's most contentious events, an unprecedented vote by the league's athletic directors to decide who would go to the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes won the vote and made good on the decision, blasting USC in Pasadena, 42 to 21.
And while the tie to Michigan cost the Buckeyes the national title, it could not diminish the remarkable achievements of the 1973 Buckeyes ... Ohio State's last unbeaten team.
Hard to believe it will be 50 years ago in November.

The other two teams, Alabama and Norte Dame were unbeaten going into the Sugar Bowl that year. If Michigan or Ohio State would have played either one, they would have won. What a crime that ND was awarded the national title. Imagine if a playoff would have happened that year? It would have been an all-Big 10 final!

The 1973 team was amazing they gave up 5 touchdowns the whole season 3 came in the Rose Bowl vs USC The offensive line was unreal skill players and that defense gave up less than 5. ppg Cournelius Greene very underrated qb (#45) was also very good and Gradishar was the best linebacker in twenty years andFox and Colzie Bruce Elia and Pete Johnson were 230 lb tanksImagine if Champ Henson hadn’t gotten hurt he was all america talent. Everyone knew we wouldn’t throw but they still couldn’t stop them.And they destroyed a very good SC team into the Rose Bowl
USC coach John McKay called this OSU team the best team he had ever coached against, just after he lost to them 42-21 in the Rose Bowl. Looking back, I believe these Buckeyes should have been voted national champions. Sentimentality toward Notre Dame may have sealed the outcome.
I live in L.A. and after the game, USC players agreed both Ohio St. and Oklahoma were better than Notre Dame, since SC played all three. Being a UCLA fan, I was rooting hard for the Buckeyes, just like 1968.
Actually, Duffy Daugherty started a black QB the decade prior. He was the pioneer in that regard. Jimmy Raye, from North Carolina. He won a NC for Duffy. The first black QB from the South to win a N.C.
Woody Hayes is a College Football version of Bobby Knight.

OMG Folks, THIS WAS THE BEST TEAM IN 1973, PERIOD AND END OF STORY! This was a time when Ohio football ruled the roost and I say that because Michigan was a close second and most of their stars were from Ohio. I don't even recall who won the NC that year! I think it was ND? Total BS!
They gave a share to Alabama even though they lost to Notre Dame. We beat USC by 3 touchdowns and we had a tie they have a loss and still get a share of the natty. How does that happen?
@Fred Jaminson Bo couldn't beat USC or a Bowl game...remember?? He always choked in the big game, like Harbaugh.
