Hey Stu, they are few and far between at this time of the year. They can be caught using bait but as for a lure it's pretty difficult. They become pretty lethargic at this time of the year with the cooler temperatures.

Been down to the mouth many times lately and had no luck on the Lures, as ol mates mentioned most Kahawai caught down there at this time of the year are caught on bait

@@extremeterrene Id say they will be back attacking the lure around the beginning of September. The water will still be cold but as the water temps warm up the Kahawai become more active.

Hey Stu,, The kahawai do move up the river and into fresh water. They head about as far as the OHB bridge. The only access I know of on the south side is via a locked gate at Spencer Park. Thanks for the comment about the videos it's much appreciated.

All good re commenting. Yeah, I enjoy catching rainbows and just getting out and about on the river beds. Yes, the second rainbow was a nice clean wee fish and that waterway does produce some good fish. Thanks 👍

Yep, it can certainly test your patience alright. Especially if you are catching fish and no one else is, then you get everyone jumping in and they start throwing lures all over the place...lol

Thanks for rhe comment mate. I run Shimano 30lb braid. The fishing stores can spool your reel from their bulk roll and that stuff is also pretty good. If you see some abrasion just test your line by putting it under tension to see if it will break. If in doubt just peel off the affected line till tou see no more fluffy braid. Cheers

Hi Tony, thanks for the kind words. I am using an 8ft Shimano Backbone Rod and a Penn 4500 Spin Fisher Reel. I am running 30lb braid with a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. I use the same rod for both the boat and on shore. Cheers Aaron

@@canterburyfishingadventures As a follow-up to this, I bought the rod and reel, put on 30lb braid and 20lb fluorocarbon leader, and took it to Onepoto Harbour today and caught a kahawhai on my third cast with a 20g spoon. Magic!

No you don't need a license to fish the mouth of the Waimakariri. If you by chance happen to catch a trout or Salmon you cannot keep it. You will have to release it.
