I repair, restore, and custom build Marx and Lionel trains, but I prefer Marx. I will build a train to any theme or specifications that you can dream up. And by watching my videos, you can see I am happy to share my expertise with anyone who is willing to listen, as that is what the hobby is all about.
And one more thing. You might have heard from the so called ''experts' that you don't need to completely tear down a motor to refurbish it. HOGWASH! I've torn down a few of the motors they speak of, and have found dried grease, pet hair and carpet fiber twisted around the axles, grime around the armature, etc. There is no way you can get to these areas unless you do a complete disassembly. Nuff' said. Enjoy, and I appreciate all comments.

Fantastic. I’m putting In a tin ceiling cornice, I wanted more of a copper or gold to match my light fixture and door hardware. The tin panels are tin plated steel. So this should give the look I want and retain the metallic look better than paint would.
Wow, glad to see my technique is helping in the home improvement category as well. Very ingenious, and thanks for sharing!
A smart looking Lionel 1688 👍👍 Have you considered doing this locomotive with a dual smokestack 🙂🙂
Thanks Terry. If you check another one of my videos, you'll find one of my builds with two separate smoke units working independently. Marx on one side, Lionel on the other. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Great job what a nice set
@RalphMannielloJr Thanks Ralph. Glad you like them.
So COOL!! Thank you for sharing!!
@toddedeker3528 My pleasure. (along with the building )😏
Those are great.
Thank you so much.
Thanks Oliver. It's funny I have no problem at all downloading on TH-cam. And yes, the ends are original.
Very nice! One question: Are the coach body ends MarX originals, custom plastic castings or 3D-printed...?
They are originals. Thanks for asking and watching.
Simply….genius! I had to play this video more than once just to appreciate all of your work. Thank you for sharing and BRAVO!!! Interestingly enough, i was looking for “Marx train restoration” which is only how I came across your video…i try to find any experienced Marx guys out there and now I have subscribed to you as well because i am just able to get into the hobby and truly enjoy Marx.
Yes, it took a lot of planning and engineering to put all that together, and so glad you appreciate it. And if you're looking for 'Marx restorations' I'm your guy.
Awesome Halloween custom, I love it! 🎃🐈⬛👻
Thanks John.
Leave the stack where it is just make a smoke unit smoke a lot more-you can do it.
@davidcraft3103 Thanks for the vote of confidence in me Dave, but I already moved the stack back a while ago due to popular demand. Now if you want to see smoke, check out my latest video featuring the Horror Express Halloween train!
Ha! Fun stuff, well done. Does this mean you have a spotlight and yoke to spare?
Thanks John. No, I got that searchlight car in a junk lot with the top section already missing. If you need that part, Robert Grossman has a replacement made from a modified Lionel unit. Not original, but functional.
Great work, I love it. I appreciate your creative work.
Thanks Steve. Always good to hear from you.
Quite horrific! But, someone is bound to point out that a train isn't Really a Train unless the end of the train is 'protected' by markers - appropriately colored, of course. Two 'marker-like' shapes (they could be LEGO pieces) either side of the caboose, shapes which would change color from Red to Green and back with some 'drool'/'slime' below them, would look nice. Or, a simpler effect would be a flexy-wire-mounted ghost 'floating' at roof level and holding a red lantern behind the caboose...with perhaps a coupla bats circling the lantern. That detail aside, the smoke effect leads one to conjure up all sorts of 'effects'...! Great stuff and much appreciated...!
I'll keep that marker suggestion in mind. But realistically, it's not a 'train' anyway by normal standards.😮 But stay tuned Oliver, because I already have plans for my 2nd smoke machine!🎉
Scary!
It was meant to be. Thanks for the comment.
That’s great !
Thanks Jim. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice looking and functional Marx trains. Really like the articulated Mercury set. Very good workmanship.

Thank you! Will do!
@@Marxmotorman anytime! But I do have 2 questions, are you going to paint it like the real canadian pacific locomotives? and when is part 2 going to come out?
Awesome custom 666! They are great smokers.
Yes they are! And thanks John.
Me likem plenty good. I`m trying to squeeze a Marx 400 S/R motor into a Cast Brass Clad 1939 420 Flyer Shell.
Hey Plunker. Those prewar AFs are really attractive with the brass all polished up. Good luck, and me want seeum when done.
wow, beautiful!
Thanks John.
Thats a great looking engine i lnew right
I knew right away it was a 666. I have both 666 and 1666, great looking engine so reliable . Right now im having trouble with my 1829 Santa Fe the linkage keeps getting stuck.i tried spacers no luck. Maybe do a video on this engine youre friend. Bernie from California
Hey Bernie. There's two reasons why the linkage is getting stuck. It's either the linkage is either in the wrong position on the drive wheel, or the arc shaped pivot arm needs to be adjusted away from the drivers. Trust me and let me know how you make out. Oh yeah, and lose those spacers.
Love the 666! Bought one for a buck out of a junk box that ran great. and have been hooked on Marx ever since. Marx is the most underrated trains at the train shows. Cheap, plentiful, and easiest to repair. Fun to customize. Nice job on your 666!
Thanks Dave. You're right about Marx Trains. You usually find them at train shows under the display tables in boxes. And that's where I do all by digging.🤩
Super cool.
Thank you Ronald.
That looks really nice.
@@seventhcircleracing3012 Thank you.
Has anyone experimented with regearing marx engine to slowdown ,more scale speed, 666 333
Not to my knowledge, but I've experimented with different types of resistors to lower the voltage going into the motor with mixed success.
Looks good, runs well - nice job
Thank you Mr. Silverrailz. I'm doing a repaint on it now, and removed the plastic tube which actually improved the smoke output. A sequel will follow, so stay tuned.
Cool custom Jr. Torpedo. 😎👍
Thanks John K.
Could you fit a piece of rubber tube instead of plastic like the old American Flyers?
@@MygrandpasTrain The material wouldn't make any difference. But I did remove the tube, and it did make an improvement.
Move the stack back. It’s too far forward on the boiler already and sounds like you already have a good plan to move it back!
Thanks, Bluesharpie, but so far it looks like the nays have it. I might have a solution to the smoke problem without the surgery, so stay tuned.
Good looking locomotive! Great conversion job. What a nice layout! Love the climb up to the long bridge span! Just great!
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it. I'm doing a repaint on it and will have a sequel ready in about a week. Stay tuned.
It looks & runs great!
Thanks John. I do plan on doing a repaint and getting the smoke to 'puff' a bit better.
What is the green, silver and brown steam loco on the layout?
Good observation. That is a standard Marx 666 that I painted in a Southern Crescent motif.
@@Marxmotorman Sounds nice! We all out here would like to see more pictures of it.
Ok then Matt. I'll try to showcase it within the next few weeks.
Nice going! Very clever. I admire your track plan. Keeps a train going. 😊
Thanks Ronald. That's just one of three lines on the layout.
Great work! Don't change it. The brass is beautiful! It looks really nice as is.. 👏😊
I agree, the way it looks nowis great and runs great.
Ok thanks. I'm keeping track (pardon the pun) of the comments.
Ok, looks like the nays have it.
And the nays have it. The stack stays in place.
Using a steel pointed pointer really makes me nervous. How about a chop stick instead?
Doesn't bother me a bit. It is better than using my fat fingers which blocks the view. Besides, I don't use chop sticks.
@@Marxmotorman Those plastic toothpicks may serve as an option.. 🙏😊
Hey I also have here at the house a 1666 Gray smoking Loco and Grey Santa Fe sound tender from 1955 in like new condition. Bought in 2017 on ebay with its cars for $71.00. Any idea what they might be worth now?
According to My Greenberg's Price Guide, the loco is worth $60.00, and the Sound -of-Power tender is worth $80.00. The cars would vary depending on the type, etc. If you've got the side smoker, it's worth $85.00. o
@@Marxmotorman Ok. Thank you. So they are not worth selling then. We got them in original box. We were surprised they were gray.
@@PatrickCrossfire. You didn't mention the original box. In that case, depending on the condition of the box, you can double the amount they're worth! You've got quite a prize there, Patrick
Hey my Marx layout is similar /smaller but also on astro turf type carpet. I have vintage Lionel as well but currently running only Marx. I seem to actually prefer Marx stuff. I not completely sure why.🎉
I'll tell you why Patrick. Marx trains are cheaper, and MUCH less complicated than Lionel. The Lionels are more difficult to work on, and their part numbering system is a real nightmare. In general, Marx parts are more universal than Lionel.
@@Marxmotorman Yes definitely. I have already repaired 3 Marx engines. My 1954 Lionel F-3 will not run I have tried everything. Nothing works. I put it in storage. Also the Marx E-7's are really good looking and smooth running. I'm on e-bay a lot and just picked up 2 more 1095's A+A in good condition. I have noticed the Marx Prices keep creeping up and Lionel prices going down since 2017. Looks like we are not the only ones who can see the value difference. Thanks for the response. Look forward to more videos. Chow.
@@PatrickCrossfire. I've noticed the price trend myself. In my experience with Lionel motors, I've found that the complicated E unit is usually the culprit. The complete units themselves are fairly expensive, but rebuilding kits are available. And, as typical Lionel, they pose a real challenge to reassemble.
@@Marxmotorman Yes. That is what went out on my 1954 F-3 which is dual motored. I tried to bypass the E-unit like I have done on 3 Marx engines but to my surprise they wont move. Nothing. Im baffled. So apparently the E-Units are integral to the motor function? Maybe. Im not sure. I tried several different wiring combos but not go. I gave up. I also gave up on buying anymore Lionel engines as I fear I wont be able to fix them. They are nicely made but seem overly complicated which is not good for me. Only Marx E-7's will continue to be collected at this point. Thank you for your response.
@@PatrickCrossfire. No, there is a way to bypass the E unit, as I've had a few motors sans the E unit which I later installed. Unfortunately, those motors have been sold, and my ancient memory fails to recall which wires go where. I would go to OGR forum and ask one of the knowledgeable members how to go about it.
Hello! Just wanted to say great job on the train, and I also have a question. I recently acquired a marx whistling wind-up, but the whistle doesnt work. Do you have any repair videos or tips that could help me to get it whistling again?
Nevermind. I wasnt winding it hard enough lol
Thank you, and yes, I do have a video out that shows how to repair the whistle. Just go to my channel and you'll find it. I don't know your mechanical skills, but it is a very difficult repair, even for myself.
Ok, problem solved! I would use some good 10w oil around the bushings though.
A really wonderful job.
Thanks, Long John. I'll be building a set of passenger cars to go with it in the near future, which I'll be showcasing on this channel as well. So stay tuned.
I could be wrong, but your 666 MarX steamer, if it has a rubber tire on one drive wheel, then the motor and smoke assembly probably came out of a 1666. Also the 666 is older then the 1666. Speaking of the 1666 the tender has what MarX called the Sound O Power. It is an electronic transistor circuit, with the speaker pointed out the top where you see all of the little holes near the back up light. I have no direct 100% proof since MarX did not catalog their products like Lionel but the 1666 steamer with Santa Fe tender (SOP) was in some of the the Big Rail work train sets that were out around 1970's. Lionel, the MPC Lionel, made their first electronic Mighty Sound Of Steam around 1972. The circuits are pretty similar... I have fixed both. However the neat thing about the MarX version it was more universal and kid friendly. Since it did not require a wire to the engine for the wheel timing, and could be hooked to any engine and work just fine. That center roller is the timing/contact roller/switch. You will see a resistor on the one part of it and it has two grooves on each side, loud-soft set up for the electronics inside.
Greenberg's Guide states both the 666 and 1666 were available with the steam chest smoke option. However, the Big Rail work train usually came sans the E unit. I'm quite familiar with the "Sound f Power" tenders, with the one in this video being inoperative when I received it. It was usually paired with the gray stripped variation of the 1666, as that was the same color as the tender. Marx came out with it around 1969/70, which beat Lionel's version by over a year.
@@Marxmotorman Thanks for the reply. The side smokers use a plunder method and one some I have the plunger gets stuck. Just be aware of that and oil the plunger area when you can. The point about the rubber drive was that as far as I know MarX never used it with the cast iron engine only on the plastic ones. I have at least one of the gray 1666 ones in my collection as well.
@@rennethjarrett4580 Th
@@rennethjarrett4580 It makes sense that the 1666 would have the rubber tire since it's much lighter than the 666. And regarding the plastic piston on the side smoker, light grease works better than oil, as it lubricates longer, and helps seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder resulting in less leakage of smoke bypassing the piston. Not to mention less messy.
Nice interesting job on the lift bridge and related building.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Good job, hope you show us the finished product.
