I repair, restore, and custom build Marx and Lionel trains, but I prefer Marx. I will build a train to any theme or specifications that you can dream up. And by watching my videos, you can see I am happy to share my expertise with anyone who is willing to listen, as that is what the hobby is all about.
And one more thing. You might have heard from the so called ''experts' that you don't need to completely tear down a motor to refurbish it. HOGWASH! I've torn down a few of the motors they speak of, and have found dried grease, pet hair and carpet fiber twisted around the axles, grime around the armature, etc. There is no way you can get to these areas unless you do a complete disassembly. Nuff' said. Enjoy, and I appreciate all comments.

Scratch built unloading unit made from popsicle sticks for Marx prewar side dump cars
Marxmotorman builds a better mouse trap! This scratch built unit works more realistically and quieter than the original factory-made accessory. And it was made using popsicle sticks and scrap wood, along with a $10.00 motor. total cost for the project was $15.00.

Great vidio, I like that great work. Thanks for the morning coffee..
Thanks Casey. I'm presently working on the structure for it, so stay tuned for the finale!
My wife got me a Cricut for Christmas that I use to make paint masks with Frisket sheets. Same technique used to create Azteching on Starship models. Frisket is thinner than painter's tape and makes finer edges.
Im not a Marx collector but that stuff is COOL!
Thanks zookeeper. You might want to give Marx a second look. They're cheaper than Lionel or AF, and WAY easier to work on.
Marx guy here, Plunkerville N.H. be not far from the coast, yust a hop skip and a jump. Pardon me Swedish.
You be close fer shure.
SHOEE! She be an Eye Poper.
Thanky agin Plunker!
Marx guy here, she be the Bee`s Knees. I haven't any dump cars, for us Plunkersylvanians prefer to travel by Hopper.
Haven't heard that phrase in a while.
Marx guy here, while masking, I prefer using a toothpick along with my Xacto. Me eyesight at 77 aint what it once was.
Mine at 76 isn't either. So I use a jeweler's magnifying visor.
Marx guy here, I be likein your workmanship. This time I`m floored.
Yeah, I guess I'm a perfectionist.
eggscllent.
That's a 'yoke' right?
This little gadget is fantastic! I may try making something similar one day, it looks pretty doable.
Thanks, it does seem quite popular. There was a bit of geometry involved. I've got a lot of popsicle sticks left over, so maybe I'll make a few more for sale on the Bay!
That's working great! Very nice!
Thanks SGR.
Yes, I enjoyed it. I love seeing scratch built items, well done.
Glad you enjoyed it, Steve. Always good to hear from you.
Yup, good example of the KISS principle! Now all you need are Red and Green lights to indicate "Danger! Machinery Operating!" and "Clear! Step Carefully!" driven by a microswitch or even a mini SPDT toggle switch.
Thanks for the reply, Oliver. I'll have to think about your suggestion.
Great job I never was impressed by the original version. But watching yours run and seeing your reconstruction I think it's 👍👍! "Blessings and Happy Rails".. GMan
@@myworld67 Thanks Gman. Just from the ones I've seen operating on TH-cam made me think, "There must be a better way!!!".
From the time period of those cars people had enough sense to know there was machinery operating and stay clear
@ Spoil Sport!
what do you make bushing/bearings out of? And it's a great video!
I use 1/4" brass stock and turn them down on my lathe.
@@Marxmotorman oh ok i need a lathe, lol how about the square bearings that go in the chassis, (in ho gauge)n= if you may know? Thx
@@legionfrog313 First off, there are no 'square' bearings in the chassis. And I don't understand what you mean by HO gauge. This is an O gauge motor.
@@Marxmotorman I don't see how I can send you pictures of the bearings that I have through here is there another way?
Impressive! Very unique. I wonder one could make a Marx "Little Joe" electric with a similar technique?
Thanks Chicagoland. You just gave me an idea for my next build! I just ordered the pantographs.
This is slick.
Thanks, Guss.
Thats pretty slick build there . Makes you look twice.
Thanks. I tried to sync in a few bars of "Smoke gets in your eyes" by the platters but was unsuccessful.
You make it look so easy. You are a craftsman
Thank you, Vincent. always happy to share my knowledge, as that's what the hobby is all about.
I just love watching you're videos, and the Penn Central stuff you do is incredible. I just keep learning from you
Lad to hear Bernie
Nice. I am a long-time scale modeler, so I use my airbrush to paint with for nice smooth finishes. Also, I use wood skewers for pressing tape edges down. If the work is delicate or fine stripes involved, I will often shoot a clear coat after each color to seal the edges of the tape and avoid bleed under…. Of course I will sometimes use fine line water-slide decal stripes if I have them available.
@@giuseppe4909 Yeah, most of the painting on that video was done with an air brush.
I tried to email you twice to see if you can restore my 0-4-0 but haven't heard anything from you yet
Well, I got this one William. Don't know why I didn't get the others. Try bobtesta87@gmail.com and we'll discuss your 0-4-0.
Quite stunning…Great build !
Thanks for all your great comments.
@ Thanks for sharing your great work with all of us !
Love it ! I’m just getting started working on Marx trains.
If you need any assistance, you know where to find me.
@ I have no doubt that I will be in touch at some point ! Much appreciated !
Awesome
Thank you!
I personally liked that a lot 👍from dave jn the uk 🇬🇧
Cheers old chap!
Very creative and artistic. I have subscribed and look forward to reviewing your old videos.
Thanks Vincent. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for subscribing.
Wow fancy! That's a LOT of smoke
Thanks. That's the 2nd smoke machine I've built from my own design. Maybe I'll start building those as a sideline. (lol)
Well done! 👍👍
Thanks Porschdude. These last two builds involved smoke machines - - - and I do have one more. Hmmmm.
Because trains
Fantastic. I’m putting In a tin ceiling cornice, I wanted more of a copper or gold to match my light fixture and door hardware. The tin panels are tin plated steel. So this should give the look I want and retain the metallic look better than paint would.
Wow, glad to see my technique is helping in the home improvement category as well. Very ingenious, and thanks for sharing!
A smart looking Lionel 1688 👍👍 Have you considered doing this locomotive with a dual smokestack 🙂🙂
Thanks Terry. If you check another one of my videos, you'll find one of my builds with two separate smoke units working independently. Marx on one side, Lionel on the other. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Great job what a nice set
@RalphMannielloJr Thanks Ralph. Glad you like them.
So COOL!! Thank you for sharing!!
@toddedeker3528 My pleasure. (along with the building )😏
Those are great.
Thank you so much.
Thanks Oliver. It's funny I have no problem at all downloading on TH-cam. And yes, the ends are original.
Very nice! One question: Are the coach body ends MarX originals, custom plastic castings or 3D-printed...?
They are originals. Thanks for asking and watching.
Simply….genius! I had to play this video more than once just to appreciate all of your work. Thank you for sharing and BRAVO!!! Interestingly enough, i was looking for “Marx train restoration” which is only how I came across your video…i try to find any experienced Marx guys out there and now I have subscribed to you as well because i am just able to get into the hobby and truly enjoy Marx.
Yes, it took a lot of planning and engineering to put all that together, and so glad you appreciate it. And if you're looking for 'Marx restorations' I'm your guy.
Awesome Halloween custom, I love it! 🎃🐈⬛👻
Thanks John.
Leave the stack where it is just make a smoke unit smoke a lot more-you can do it.
@davidcraft3103 Thanks for the vote of confidence in me Dave, but I already moved the stack back a while ago due to popular demand. Now if you want to see smoke, check out my latest video featuring the Horror Express Halloween train!
Ha! Fun stuff, well done. Does this mean you have a spotlight and yoke to spare?
Thanks John. No, I got that searchlight car in a junk lot with the top section already missing. If you need that part, Robert Grossman has a replacement made from a modified Lionel unit. Not original, but functional.
Great work, I love it. I appreciate your creative work.
Thanks Steve. Always good to hear from you.
Quite horrific! But, someone is bound to point out that a train isn't Really a Train unless the end of the train is 'protected' by markers - appropriately colored, of course. Two 'marker-like' shapes (they could be LEGO pieces) either side of the caboose, shapes which would change color from Red to Green and back with some 'drool'/'slime' below them, would look nice. Or, a simpler effect would be a flexy-wire-mounted ghost 'floating' at roof level and holding a red lantern behind the caboose...with perhaps a coupla bats circling the lantern. That detail aside, the smoke effect leads one to conjure up all sorts of 'effects'...! Great stuff and much appreciated...!
I'll keep that marker suggestion in mind. But realistically, it's not a 'train' anyway by normal standards.😮 But stay tuned Oliver, because I already have plans for my 2nd smoke machine!🎉
Scary!
It was meant to be. Thanks for the comment.
That’s great !
Thanks Jim. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice looking and functional Marx trains. Really like the articulated Mercury set. Very good workmanship.
Thanks Edward. Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome work!
And thank you again.

This is so cool! Keep up your fantastic work!!
Thank you! Will do!
@@Marxmotorman anytime! But I do have 2 questions, are you going to paint it like the real canadian pacific locomotives? and when is part 2 going to come out?
Awesome custom 666! They are great smokers.
Yes they are! And thanks John.
Me likem plenty good. I`m trying to squeeze a Marx 400 S/R motor into a Cast Brass Clad 1939 420 Flyer Shell.
Hey Plunker. Those prewar AFs are really attractive with the brass all polished up. Good luck, and me want seeum when done.
wow, beautiful!
Thanks John.
