Fantastic paint and electronics. I have two layouts, one on a 6'x4' which is for the Lionel O gauge and alongside with a 3' space a 6'2' which is for the MARX that naturally is O27. The 21's cannot negotiate the tight radius of the O27 but work well on the O gauge. I am tight on space since this basement room was once a bedroom and low ceiling prohibits a second tier. Glad you enjoyed them. Now, to get your 21 A-A to negotiate the 27" radius, there's a pin on top of the rear dummy truck that controls the motion of the coupler. It doesn't move far enough over in the tight radius, and causes a derailment. If you remove the rear truck, and remove (or break off) the pin, you'll have no more trouble on the tight curves. It worked for me on both my A-A 21's.
Thanks John. As I'm sure you know, these are (or were) the Santa Fe #21 A-A units. I don't remember if I ever put these on our forum or not. But I can tell you, those 20 LED's drain that battery really quickly.
Sure. But I wanted to lights to be able to work while the train was stationary. In order to do that with a rectifier, I would need to install a kill switch for the motor.
Love what you did with the 21s . i have got to get mine going again. Like i said i bought my engines for 20 bucks. It was a great train store but going out if business. Hobby lost another ma & pa store.
Looks great. I love customizing Marx Trains (The ones in my Scratch & Dent, In Need of TLC boxes). Marx trains lend themselves so well to that sort of thing, especially if they are a bit beat up, and you have nothing to lose & all to gain by customizing.
That's how I got these. Scratched up, and rusty. The litho was mostly gone, but if you noticed, I masked off the windshield detail. And thanks for watching!
You have a full set of horns. They were missing on my 21, so I carefully painted them on. Upon viewing real engines, I`ve noted that they are pointed in different directions from each other..
I've seen them mounted both ways. I'm not sure which is correct. FYI, if you decide to replace the horns, the mounting tabs come in two different thicknesses. So make sure you order the right ones.

That's too bad. There's been a few go under in my neck of the woods also. I rebuild Marx motors if you need it done.
