Breath of the Wild's Enduring Design Philosophy
I recomend trying Moghunter or Yanfly's Battle UI's thats all I can say
PS1 and PS2 had some great exclusive wizardry games.
You're cooking with this idea, a DRPG with Metroidvania level design elements is something that I would love to play. I know you said you want to avoid going too experimental with mechanics but I feel like foregoing a traditional leveling system in favor of upgrades that you find in the environment could be really neat. One of my favorite things about the DRPGs I've played (mostly Etrian Odyssey) is that "do I push my luck and explore just a little further" war of attrition vibe. I think it would be cool to lean into that by forcing players to explore for stat boosts and new skills instead of being able to just grind levels.
Loved the video, this was awesome. I bet the other comments say bunches of good stuff about it. Me though? Gotta talk about Samus and Ridley in Other M... Nothing new, but what happened need not ever be forgotten or hidden. Samus's flashback during Other M Ridley fight is beyond lame. I can't even stomach listening to someone claim otherwise without shuddering as I have to relive that dark moment in our journey with her... much in the same way she faltered in the face of Ridley. Only difference being, I'm not an intergalactic Chozo enhanced bounty hunter in custom made power armor with years of experience. She'd fought Ridley how many times up until that point, and suddenly, coincidentally... in the game that had her start ranting and raving about the babyyyy, and being an emotionally meek and submissive lap dog... Coincidentally in that very same game, they also give her a totally shoehorned "Hero suffers breakdown staring into the eyes of her nemesis" moment. Like it was a fine thing to maybe feature in a comic, or any side media that wasn't that far along in the Metroid timeline or something... Or if they dialed back how dramatic it was and totally repackaged the sentiment that Ridley scared and hurt her deeply in the past. And I mean totally toned it down and repackaged it. Then maybe. Maybe it would have been an interesting moment of characterization. But the way it was done, in that context, it would be totally eyebrow raising for somebody who's easily went head to head with her old foe, to then have a random, 1st time ever mini mental breakdown the Nth time they fought. There are reasons that game was and is largely panned, and only given praise for some of it's strong points, and it's effort to freshen things up. That Ridley childhood flashback crap, is absolutely one of those reasons. Had it not been just so far along in her career in the timeline, as well as the player's spending decades with her at that point...then I am sure it would have been received better. Zero Mission did a great job harkening back to the past. It was simply not characteristic for her, nor a welcome or understandable attempt at further characterization. It simply was a NOT GOOD attempt at adding more facets to her characterization. Dread, definitely proves players are more than open to seeing further facets of Samus. Fusion too. When looked at closely, many of the games tended to slowly and tastefully introduce new and overall behooving aspects to her character. Not make her psychologic swiss cheese. That Ridley crap was absolute discount bin, derivative, cliche, half baked BS though. I'm glad I live in a world where you wouldn't catch the majority of Metroid fans claiming that even if you put their families at arm cannon point in front of them lmao.
Don’t worry-a large portion of the other comments are saying the same thing you did about Other M, so yours fits right in.
I just got into Wizardry Variants Daphne and I fell in love with it instantly. Now I am in this wizardry rabbit hole finding out just how many games and even anime are wizardry inspired and how big it really is? I think I'll be trying more games, Variants Daphne doesn't even feel like a gacha, its amazing
Also I've been a big megaten fan so finding out just how much my influential rpg was influenced is an amazing trip
I think Variants Daphne might have some of the best combat in the series, tbh. Such a fun game.
Yo who here playing wizardry Daphne? So far it’s my favorite phone game, great dungeon crawler and has a great wizardry vibe. It’s only been out a couple months! Get in losers! We’re going crawling!
It’s really good! I’m impressed with it so far
@ yeah! I knew you’d be playing! Awesome good luck in the abyss!
FF7 remake is not rpg its action adventure
Nah, it's an RPG, albeit one with action and adventure elements (there are very few pure RPGs, even back in the 80s and 90s). The defining element of all RPGs is that gameplay is dependent on the character's stats, not the player's personal skill or puzzle gating. Action-adventure focus on mostly on player skill and sometimes have hard-gated ability/item checks, which are both different gameplay category to RPG's stat-based gameplay. Sure, some action RPGs like FF7 incorporate more player skill into the gameplay (and adventure-game style item gating), but most things in FF7 are only beatable if your stats are up to par, and the majority of the game's progression systems are either dependent on or directly affect the party's stats. I may eventually have a video explaining the differences more in-depth.
Is this like the dungeon parts of Phantasy Star 1?
exactly!
Wizardry Variants Daphne already out!!
Yep, but it wasn’t at the time I made this video haha
I absolutely agree with your 1st and 2nd points here, especially 2nd point. Most people and new game devs don't understand or can empathize with how difficult completing an rpg is, and it's quite misleading to expect a solo game dev can pull off a triple A standard game, which needed medium to large teams with more hardware capacities. The 2nd point is essential for solo game devs, as time/energy/attention is limited, and if you want a high quality rpg game, high quality any game or any project you do have to lower expectations and consider niching down.
Playing snes translation of 1, 2, & 3. I never enjoyed the perspective, but something out of 80s rpgs that just ges to me.
Thoughts on Wizardry the Five Ordeals?
I played the original Wizardry on an Apple 2E, and the original Rogue a DEC PDP-11.
I was so close to subscribing, but then I see this...he's a "game jurnalist"...
Thanks for checking the videos out nonetheless
Hmmm
might sound crazy but i would love to see from software remake the first dragon quest
I think that sounds incredible
Hello.
I love her already
Incase anyone is wondering the music playing in the beginning of the video is Code - Deck from Phantasy Star Online Episode III
Rewatching this today. Gives me good feelings. Love this video, man.
I want to see a Metroid Movie one day and with a live action Zelda Movie on the way a live action Metroid Movie seems to be a possibility, I would personally want Megan Bonne to play Samus, I really liked her character Elizabeth Keen from the Black List, in fact Elizabeth and Samus have a lot in common both had a horrible and traumatizing past though Elizabeth's past was more vague, and both were determined and wanted to get the job done even if it caused their lives which sadly for Elizabeth it did, that's why Megan would be perfect for Samus.
But for the love of God what ever you do Nintendo don't let Bre Larson play Samus fan or not she's a terrible Actress I mean look at the Marvel's I'm telling you if Bre is Samus that Movie will bomb because no one likes her!
Love to see Republic Commando get some love. Boss is my favorite Star Wars character.
The newly released Wizardry gacha game Daphne is pretty good~ It doesn't even feel like a gacha-game because of how much hands-on the game is.
Yeah! I’m really enjoying it
Didn't know the existence of the extraction crawlers genre. Such astonishing graphic assets wasted in pvp and pve online games....it's really a shame...it will not work more than a very fractioned niche of the market. First person Dungeon Crawlers and roguelike have always been solo experiences because people like that enviroment and atmosphere to be soloed. There were Nethack and Larn in the 90s then Diablo mixed the things with the hack and slash genre. But the first person view attempts were always just clones of doom
15:00 Appears a Dragonlance fan is playing this run....Not sure about 3 of the names but Gold, Tas, and Rastlin gotta be references.
Wizardry 7 now has an fan-translation of the PSX version in English if anyone is wondering.
I've always thought that the interviewer asking the questions should be edited out! If they are asking the questions properly.. the person being interviewed will inform the viewer.
"Animals are an animal." Utterly profound.
Any newer games that are similar to the first few kings fields, preferably 3(usa)
Monomyth and Lunacid for sure. Dread Delusion as well, though it is more like a mix between KF and Morrowind.
@@TheCrawl ok cool I'm thinking of getting a new system, are they all pc or do u recommend PS5/Xbox or anythibt
Yup metroid 2 on Gameboy i played when it came out. Im old.....
I exactly know what you mean. I remember drawing all the plans and spending a long time to finish Xenomorph on Amiga back in the days. After that I waited decades and never see a dungeon crawler futuristic until the 2 more than fantastic Vaporum titles. I think there was a couple like the Black Dawn series but I am not able to find them to play. A grid based Dungeon master with guns and no magic in a world like The Sons of the forest. I am in if you looking for a developer lol
I got a gamecube for my bday when i was 8 in 2008 and metroid Prime was my first metroid game and it was the best game i have ever played at that time besides windwaker. I love that game to death and i bought the switch remaster day 1
Hey, The Crawl. In case you hadn't been informed, Wizardry 7 on PS1 has now gotten an English translation courtesy of Gertius and the pre-patched rom can be found, as usual, on CDRomance.
I love this, and I'm shocked that no one else much talks about wizardry. I love etrian odyssey, and I'm very sad we didn't get the ds wizardry games.
they're the only fromsoft games worth playing, the studio essentially died with miyazaki
Nice list bro 😁
Great research! TY! Wizardry 6,7 and 8 are all on Steam now!
This was made with rpg make Mv? There’s so many versions!
Yeah! I am currently working on an MZ project next
@@TheCrawl is mv the best version to use fple with?
@@TheCrawl btw your channel has inspired me to start my own project and become way too obsessed with wizardry! Currently enjoying the nes version of the first game! Thanks! ⚔️
A bit late but finally got around listening to this! It's insane how illustrious Winifred Phillips' career is! Based on her pieces here, she was a great choice to helm this project! Who knows maybe I will pick up the PS5 version? :)
I'm really glad I was able to keep Shining the Holy Ark and Shining Force III from my old Sega Saturn collection. If you liked the Golden Sun games (like I did), you'll be more than happy with these titles too. Unfortunately, they are extremely expensive.
Sail the high seas without shame, friends.
I would say not every NTSC saturn game would cost as much. I checked shining in the holy ark is now between $180-225 on ebay. I get why you say a higher amount as a estimate.
Awesome vid! Love me some Wizardry!
5 hours? That's a remake you talking about. Original one was impossoblyblong
Well on my way to make a DQ 1 clone to learn how to make JRPG then.
Oh!!!! I'm so happy you ended up creating something. I will definitely look into this! Congrats!
Great video! Thanks for sharing this! I was wondering if by any chance are you still working on this game? I'm actually working on a similar project and I love seeing your updates. Thanks!
I mostly agree and I'm making a SNES inspired JRPG because retro games are easier to make for one person. But it's also a trap to fall in, because when you copy such a game, your game will offer nothing new to the player. You will end up making a fun game but everyone has already played similar games for 100s of hours when you release. I'm not against it but remember to make it fresh.
That’s certainly a good goal, but one that should be attempted after you’ve completed a project or two first. Otherwise, it also becomes a trap. This video is not a guide on how to make a unique game, but on how to keep scope in check so first-time solo devs actually finish their rpg projects so they can gain experience then move onto those more ambitious ideas.
