Woodturning with Dick
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 พ.ย. 2020
I've been woodturning since 1986, when I was 12 years old. All self taught, aside from the initial instructions from my father, who had bought a lathe and who's son wanted to have a go, and I LOVE it. I LOVE the way the wood talks to you as soon as you pick it up and when it talks to you during the making. In 2015 my partner Lenore, who is a professional gilder, asked me to make her something small, dark and deep, like a little barrel, I did - out of a small piece of ebony I had in the workshop. A week later she presented me with the inside covered in 24ct Gold leaf and it blew my mind. We then set about making many pieces that could incorporate gilding and we set up a company called 'Moth and Mirror' to sell our creations.

Great to meet you in the Sauna, some great items here
Wayne! Thanks man! Lenore want to know what part of Alberta you were stationed in?
@ Suffield just outside Medicine Hat
The layout at the beginning was most helpful! I would not have figured that out properly. Thanks so much.
No worries Joseph, good luck with yours 😃😃😃
Very nice!
I was wondering if you’d just watched the Short, and not the main video! I hope you watched it all as I’ll be quizzing you when I’m back from my travels next week!
@WoodWithD Watch all, fire away!
@ what colour was the moon that appeared first?
@@WoodWithD not red
I think you meant ‘not purple’ but I’ll give you the point! 😆
So good I watched the short as well - shorts match my attention span. You do get around Dick but I’m disappointed the Great North Run no longer starts in Gosforth. I hail from Blakelaw, just over the hill ps I like you 🌞
Thanks Ray, I like you too 😀😀😀
@ 😍😂😎
Omg - this is absolutely stunning! 🙏🙏
😃😃😃 That’s the kinda response to start the new year with! Love it! Thank you 🤩
Yeah, after applying sander sealer to the first one and revealing that grain I literally said "wow" out loud (which is no good as I watch your videos before I fall asleep and I don't think my partner is as appreciative as I am) Really wonderful designs and so well thought out. Reminds me of a very classic sort of art deco look. Thanks for sharing
🤣🤣🤣 is all I can really say! Your poor partner 🤣🤣🤣
I had to double check to make sure you hadn't already posted the results so I could get my vote in :) XL moon - go big or go home P.s I am a lifelong member of the safety police and I think it's good that you highlight when you are doing things correctly, especially as other turners will be looking to experienced members of the community such as yourself. Stay safe and happy new year 🎊
Happy New Year to you to Lois! 🤗 If I can make it work, I’ll go large 😃 Gotta get some more work done on this one. But I get easily distracted! I blame Lenore personally! She’s now taking me for a few days at a spa, where there’s a small mountain nearby that she wants us to climb! 🤔🤨😆
Good Evening Richard, Yet again a lovely piece in which you make it look soooo easy. It’s good to see someone that is enjoying his work and also been blessed with the skill and talent. Keep the videos coming.Look forward to your next project. Happy New Year…
Jes! Dude! Always appreciate your watching sir 👍 and loving your comments 🤗🤗🤗
Great technique however.
Thanks you 👍👍👍🤗
The reason I don't use Purple Heart is that is quickly turns an ugly color of brown.
Totally agree, but, if you can accept that it’ll turn and put it with a wood that will still contrast with the yucky brown, it’s not so bad 😃 😁
Whats the speed and power please

Not only did I enjoy that, I’ve saved it for later. It is different and I like different. It’s also nice to hear a British accent. Thank you for sharing 🌞

I can do a British accent all day long 🤣 I’d love a picture or just a message here if how you got on with your moon bowl(s) 😃 We are a fan of different too, meet Lenore at the end of this video! Beautiful pieces!!
Thank you Little Creek Bow Club 😍😊👍
That came out amazing. How did you come across this idea? Were you working on contrasting wood types and just stumbled on how the moon would "appear"? I'm very new to turning, but this seems "simple" enough with some good wood choices and some help making sure the initial pieces are well sanded to make a flat, clean fit.
Hi Biff, just experimenting several years ago, I wondered what would happen if I cut the bottom corner off and glued a different bit of wood on, I got a nice curve when it initially went through and since perfected it. Works great when starting with square blanks so you can use the corners - see end of this video and the last code with the Ziricote 😃 Good luck and I’d love you to report back and let me know how you got on 🤗
You are the most creative woodturner I have found so far on TH-cam. I need to press the bell though as I keep missing your new releases and you deserve plenty more views. all the best for a wonderful 2025.
Happy New Year to you to Lois! You have bestowed upon me the ultimate crown 👑, not only do you regularly comment - which I love and helps me, you now tell me you’re turning the bells 🔔 on! I am truly grateful and hope to continue to produce videos you enjoy ☺️
Have you seen the Moon Bowl yet?
Thank you. Definitely will be having a go at one of these!
Fantastic! Send me a picture when you’ve finished it 😊😊😊👍
Beautiful Dick love the contrast I really love working with purple heart such a majestic color and looks absolutely stunning when it is all sanded and polished Blessings and Happy New Years to you and Lenore
Thank you my friend! PH is not the easiest wood to work with, but once you have successfully tamed it, it’s stunning 🤩 😍
I loved this video so much thanks for recommending it @WoodWithD! Haha yep Lenore has a great personality I definitely see why you would feature her, hope there is more to come of the two of you. Great interaction of personalities! I can see why you'd bring this one to my attention lol I am really very interested in gilding some of my pieces I've done a little of my own process but probably wildly off from what proper methods/procedures would be. Any chance you could recommend a video where you or Lenore go a little more into depth of the process. From the gallery there was talk (I can't recall the wording) of gilding the larger open surfaces of the wood then bringing down the proud taller parts so a combination of wood and gilding was visible (loved that idea and would really like to learn more of all of the types of gilding you have been doing!). Thanks again for sharing such great work. I really love your personality, such great energy, being professional and skilled while also balancing in moments where you aren't taking yourself too seriously and letting your guard down to be silly! We'd have been good friends and gotten along well haha Looking forward to more video catching up. More than happy to prioritize any suggestions or i'll pick and choose as I go. Cheers!!
The only other one that stands out as one you might enjoy from your comments to date is one of my personal favourites: th-cam.com/video/Q8tkix0Dw0U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zY0kX_dCLZh3etsS Re the gilding process, alas she’s been asked before, but she won’t put her years of expertise and training into a video. Oddly it’s one of the few things there’s isn’t that many good videos on TH-cam of, I guess for the same reason.
@@WoodWithD Thanks for the recommend, I'll put that on my next to watch list when I get a chance! Yah I guess her reaction is fair enough. I often wonder how some of these experts on YT feel putting out all of their tricks of the trade for the world to see. It's great to share the knowledge and let others grow but understandably frustrating to have gone through so much time money and effort to get good at something only for the next person to watch a video and gain all of that growth effortlessly. I see both sides so no judgment here. For someone who does want to learn the craft and willing to commit the time and effort where does a person go to get the 'training' you mentioned? Whats the starting point in that process? Or is it all completely personal trial and error, experiment on technique over and over?
@ hmmmmm, I really don’t know where to start looking for a course in it, maybe trial and error is the best way, after some initial instruction (though sounds like you’ve had experience already). Have a look in gold leaf suppliers websites for instruction. Here in the UK there is Gold Leaf Supplies. There’s a lot of info on there I think. Lenore did a 4 year degree in oil painting and frame repair and restoration and then taught gilding in weekly lessons to a group of students for a few years (different people on different courses)
@ wow she is quite accomplished!! Sounds like an awesome gal! The talent between the two of you is quite impressive. Use your superpowers for good and not evil ok?? Haha :) Yah I’ve found a bit of gilding resources and feel somewhat confident in it but hearing her hesitancy to share her techniques leaves me thinking there must be some major key techniques I am unaware of yet. Will come with time, practice and patience :)
Whoa whoa wow! Sorry for my lack of vocabulary there but those pieces have me a little lost for words at the moment! So very impressive to be able to show off your works in a place where you will have the highest chances for them to be appreciated to their fullest potential! I love showing my pieces to anyone who is willing to willingly show interest (or even feign it). You can tell by reactions those who really do appreciate the complexity of the process and thought that often goes into it. Then there are those who are like 'oh wow great, I like how round it is' lol :p Did you do the gilded taxidermy pieces then too? Sorry I am such a newbie to your channel. I've done a few mink skulls (one with gold bone skull and a chrome look over the teeth and then the other in the opposite silver/chrome on the skull and golden teeth). Still cannot pick a favorite as they both turned out pretty great in my opinion!. So do you know Lenore outside of this gallery then? She seems so knowledgeable and did such a great job in presenting the pieces!! Great to have a person like that in your life however the context.
😄😄😄😆🤭 such fun! Yarp, she speaks art well! Your minks sound wonderful! You haven’t mentioned yet her accent! Can you guess where she is from? 🇨🇦 🤭
@@WoodWithD Accent? What accent? haha I suppose that must therefore be my guess. I am a Canadian from Alberta so considering she sounds completely 'normal' to me either I am not well traveled enough or she must be a fellow Canadian? :)
@ lol! Well done! She’s is to from Alberta 😆
@ oh that is so awesome! Tell her a fellow Albertan says a great big friendly HELLO!! :)
@@perrys5954 she say ‘Go Oilers!’ 🤣
Beautiful. Loved the clear instructions too.
Looking forward to seeing your effort! I expect it to be sublime! ❤️😁😍
interesting technique! I wonder what other shapes could be done with a bit more out of the box thinking? What would it look like with some eccentric turning thrown into the mix?
That's a great idea Mr Bright! With a ripple instead of a mount, one can create multiple moons.
Fantastic creativity, you are blessed!😀
Thank you 🙏 kindly 😀😄 I certainly feel so some days in the shop 👍😃
Really great work man! I love it. Two videos into you channel and want wait to catch up on more of your video library. People talk about food-port or car-porn well watching your videos and browsing un-watched vids from your library this is the first time I've considered the phrase of this being WoodTurning-Porn (really really hope you know what I mean as maybe its a North-American saying, I am from Canada though FYI). Thanks for another banger of a video. Is there a video dedicating more screen time to your turning of the off-cut corner pieces into cups/bowls? I'm sure the concept is simple enough but there's bound to be a useful tip in there (or many!) I'm sure!
🤣🤣🤣 I know what you mean, but I could have teased and said that I wasn’t sure all viewers would like to see me make a phallic symbol 🤣🤣🤣 Of course the two vids you’ve watched are the latest, if you want a shock - go look at the oldest videos - you’ll notice I’ve improved my editing and filming skills a little since then 🤣 So you won’t have met Lenore yet!: th-cam.com/video/fzbRHcgWOX0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xs0WFm18wvpuAa4a You may recognise the accent 🤣😃👍
Hmmmm, corner bowls, I guess I could knock something together for you 😃👍
@@WoodWithD haha no by "Wood-Turning Porn" I meant it is the most visually appealing side of wood turning, the very best of the best. So like people say oh its "Car-porn" they mean a collection of pictures of vehicles that are the very best of the best and extremely pleasing to see. Zero to do with anything sexual. Perhaps that is mor of a saying in the US or something. Sorry if there was any confusion lol Definitely going to watch a combo of the newer and older videos. Its awesome watching how apparent a person progression happens over time. Wish I had video documented my wood-turning skill progression journey :)
@@perrys5954 I LOVE the following video! Lenore features at the end and she’s just comedy gold and a little pornographic! I’m joking! Totally know what you mean by wood porn 😍😍 Here’s the video for you: th-cam.com/video/EXp0H8OB60A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kTVDnHuEMzcfMn1C
I just knew this would require tools I dont have access to... Band saw, belt sander, and lathe...
🤣 I guess the best solution I can offer would be to research where your nearest turning club is. They’d have the kit you need 😃😃😃👍
@WoodWithD the local club only seems to be open during my work hours. Haven't met them yet... i do have a lathe, and enjoy my time using it. My belt sander blew a bearing so it's dead to me now. I really need to replace that.... Band saws big enough to do that cut are just really expensive. Not good for the hobbyist like me. Ill keep going with small things and watching your videos, dreaming of a larger shop space! Thanks!
@ I feel you! I consider my space small when I see others with enough room to swing a cow by the tail (not that I would or could!). I’ve been lucky getting the bits together that I have I have over the years, nearly always second hand. But we make do and strive for newer and bigger 😃😃😃
This is the most inspired I've been to try a particular project than I have been in a long time!! Really beautiful work good sir!! It's rare I subscribe off of one video but this one has me convinced! (wood color options especially dramatically different tone is very rare to come by but this project is a must when I have something light and dark enough! Thanks so much for sharing this one cheers!
Some things just have to be shared! It’s a great way to show customer the work that goes into the finished items and share ideas with other turners - welcome along friend. 🤔 Now what to make next 🤔
So, if you reduce the mound's height, can you make moon phases? Would be nice to have a bowl series with all major phases. "Collect them all!" kinda thing.
Ooooo, kind of, the moon gets a bit ugly with too much reduction. You can have another moon or two if you have a wave effect in the mound 😃😃👍
So its a waxing moon 😊
🤣 I guess it depends on which way the moon is facing 😀
Beautiful work mate grain on them is stunning. Certainly giving me some ideas getting the juices flowing. Is there any way you could do a pen turning video? 🫡👍🏴
Hey Michael, hmmmm pens….. never really been an area I developed an interest in to be honest. One of the only turned things I buy from other turners at shows 😁 I always keep any exotic offcuts that are big enough for pen blanks and give them away or sell them 😃
Cool idea, I will have to make these myself. Love the corner bowls.
Absolutely Joe, they are great fun 😃😃😃👍
Nicely done! I’m inspired to try this myself sometime.
Absolutely do, it’s great fun 😊😊👍
You’ve certainly introduced me to woods I never even knew existed! Beautiful and once again to have put those together, ingenious and very imaginative. My best part is when you add the sand and sealers, wow wow wow!
