Off Centre Woodturning - The EASY Way

  • How I made it
    Not a Lignum Vitae bowl this time, but Rippled Sycamore and a bonus Mappa Poplar bowl (not shown in the cover picture. The wood in the picture is known in Europe as Rippled Sycamore. But in the USA it’s known as Curley Maple.
    Off-centre woodturning fun for everyone including beginners.
    Or off center as my friends in the USA spell it 👍

      The mappa I got as a large wide board from Surrey Timbers, Gilford, see the tour video here: th-cam.com/video/Q8tkix0Dw0U/w-d-xo.html
      They may have some bowl blanks or small planks in stock. Give them a call. Though, it is VERY soft!
      The rippled sycamore came from Bob at Timberline in Tonbridge and given how much he had, pretty sure he’ll have boards and blanks left.
      Agree on the mappa, partly why I’m gifting it away to Ema.

    Seems like a much safer way to turn off center bowls than I’ve seen before. Thank you for doing this step by step. Wonderful piece! I wonder if you could off center turn goblet, candle holders, or anything spindle like this? If so could you share that video?

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Welcome along Madonna.
      I’d like to say I’m not into candle holders and goblets, but the next video is going to be a goblet of sorts 🤣 the standard goblet with captive rings that most youtube woodturners do, but tried to do mine with a difference (not off centre 🤣🤣)
      Not sure this method would work so well with goblets but maybe candle holders. Give it a try and see 😁👍

    What is the mening of the paper? And why can't the extra plate cover the whole faceside?

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The paper is to stop the glue going into the finish bowl. The extra plate doesn’t cover the entire side so that you can still get your fingers in the bowl to check the wall thickness isn’t getting too thin when turning down the outside. I hope that helps it 👍 Try it and see 😊😊

  • @leighw9684
    @leighw9684 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is the "easy" way??? Lol. I have a simpler approach but I can see how your method allows to turn much bigger off-center bowls. My method limits me to 6-8 inches, otherwise the lathe walks right out of the shop.

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      🤣🤣🤣 Barely any wobble though, doing it this way round! It’s all about the wobble!
      And not everyone has their lathe bolted down 🤣🤣🤣
