Why Aren't More People Saying This About Overlanding? (It's Not a Real Hobby)

Thanks for the video.
I overland my camry..
I’ve ran into the same washer deterioration issue on my 96 Tacoma 3RZ-FE using OEM Toyota washers that I’ve torqued to spec. I’m not sure why! At one point I noticed and hot swapped washers real quick, but the replacement washer had the same result. Very odd! I might have to try the washer you used in this vid. I use the same Toyota OEM washers on my 20 4Runner without issue.
Interesting! It’s a super annoying part to have fail.
In an absolute pinch, I suppose you could always fill the oil through the dip stick tube😂
Oh man haha
Simplest trick to checking oil if it's so clean you can't see it is to wipe dipstick clean, stick in engine, remove, then with a dry towel/cloth etc swipe the stick sideways. Where its wet is how high up the oil is
I’ve never though of that! Good tip
When new pickups cost $80,000 😂 this is the only way to go. 2003 Toyota Tundra v8 4x4 access cab, love this truck!!
I'm glad SxS are universally hated amongst different outdoor hobbiests
Exactly… I also don’t get why people go camping without another activity like hunting or fishing which warrants camping to get to the spot early.
I have 2" spacers, what do I put them above, or below the strut neck? Does it matter?
That generation was not even close…However, the 2007 Tundra destroyed the F150 and everyone else in power, transmission, braking refinement, and features. (Tundra was in a whole another stratosphere). It wasn't until 2011 when the F150 with the 5.0 became the better truck again. The Tundra has lagged ever since.
Appreciate the tip. Would have been even better if you demonstrated removal and installation of the pins. But I know that's awkward to do if you're doing the repair alone.
Overlanding, aka what literally neanderthals did
After two sets of KOs on a 1500, these Rubys are great, same slight road noise new, dry traction on rubys much better, easy to tell on boosted truck. Very happy not spending $1400 vs under $800. To early for other comparo's. Simple tire was the deal, sat in cart, waited for additional discount.
Ford does everything to stop Toyota . Long live TUNDRA ❤
Same thing I say about TH-camrs with an opinion😂, nothing to learn here.
Don’t like it, don’t do it. Hater
This review seemed very biased towards his own truck 😂
Overlanding is van life for people that want to shower at home
I never own those Auxito 7” round combo beam pod lights with amber led drl, but they are more promising and more stands on its own for its design. They are a must have. Auxito is the way to go.
Or just spend 3hours of time and 50$ for the pair and do as a yearly maintenance item and never worry about another failure. If you live in the rust belt this is a must this is from the pov of a shop owner/tech personal epirienced a failure of the lower joint on my used tundra 175k when I bought it and as part of the purchase agreement the front upper lower ball joints and outter tie rod ends with an alignment with oem parts was performed by the toyota dealer. Appropriate 18 months later lower left failed when driving a 70mph hiway. This truck is strictly a point a to b daily driver to work and home it's not driven hard or worked in anyway only factors are roads and being in the salt belt. I've been doing them as maintenance yearly every year for the last 7 years since the failure and have had 0 issues t h e parts removed are not showing any significant wear but are showing to be worn enough for me to feel my timing is pretty spot on as I do them in the spring after the last salt is going to happen
Been car camping/exploring in my stock Tahoe for the last 15 years and love keeping it simple. I am intrigued with the maxxed out Jeeps, Toyotas and Mercedes vans but I'm not on board spending $150k-200k to do what I do now.
At what point does a truck or suv become a “RIG” is it the number or stickers or amount of unused gear you have mounted to the side of your mall crawler?
Would you consider this locker for your First Gen Tundra? Seems like given the price, and auto unlocking on turns, it could be the better option for the front end. My concern arises in 4hi In higher speeds making lane changes.
No. I don't really need a locker for what I use my Tundra for. Furthermore, I don't have manual hubs. So, I'd feel it even in 2WD, which might be undesirable. I don't think changing lanes at high speed would be the most concerning part with this locker. Trying to turn (and start or continue a turn) in inclement weather or on loose ground would be my greatest concern. That's when the locker is most likely to not unlock and make the vehicle less predictable and harder to operate. The locker requires contact and friction at the tires in order to create a force capable of unlocking the locker. But the locker doesn't really need to unlock to change lanes or make adjustments in direction. But it does need to unlock if you're going to make a 90* turn. Something like navigating an icy parking lot or making a turn through a snowy intersection, or one I've personally experienced, trying to do a u-turn in sand. The locker doesn't want to unlock because there's very little traction at the tires, and at the same time you're applying throttle which applies power through the differential and makes the locker stay locked up. Locker = always locked unless acted upon by another force/torque. Throttle applied = extra force/torque applied to the locker, locker becomes harder to unlock Turning Movement - Differential needs to unlock for vehicle to behave properly. The only thing that can make that locker unlock is sufficient force/torque translated into the locker by having traction at each of the two wheels. Otherwise, expect the locker to remain locked.
@ Ah, okay. Thanks for the great explanation. I have been looking at lunchbox lockers for their ability to disengage on turns, to avoid damage that might otherwise occur on a selectable diff. As well as the fact that it would replace the spider gears. There seems to be a lot of back and fourth on forums over how the ADD (non-manual hubs) differential would handle the locker in 2wd. However how would slick terrain differentiate how the front end would respond with/without the locker? Would it not gain better traction? I hope these are not too redundant of questions😂. Genuinely wanting to better understand and hopefully find a good solution to front end traction.
@ the selectable diff is kinda better though, because you can turn it off for street and on for offroading. Granted, there’s a few times the auto locker might be advantageous, but being able to choose between standard 4WD and 4WD + locker is generally what you would want. I don’t see why an auto locker and ADD is a problem, but perhaps I should research the diff a little more. If the terrain is slick, the locker can’t unlock. So, during turns in slick terrain (where the tires can’t apply enough force back to the locker to unlock it), the car won’t turn well and will under steer. That’s why a selectable is nice. Cause when it snows out and you have to get to work, you don’t have to choose between a locked front end or 2WD (still with a locked front, just not as noticeable as when in 4WD and sending power to it), you can just us 4WD with the locker turned off.
I don't know, man.. going through a creek in a civic? May not need all that stuff, but it's good to have. I see a lot of stuck Suburu's out here in the NW.
Overlanding is the process of watching TH-cam gear videos, deliberating painfully for weeks and eventually buying an expensive item or vehicle upgrade. Overlanding etiquette dictates that once said upgrade is acquired, the hobbyist must immediately look for other gear and gear videos to obsess over. This hobby pairs well with $400 pocket knives, prepping to survive a zombie apocalypse (with your tricked out Tacoma) as well as $600 rain jackets. Often folks that actually go INTO the wilderness do not have enough time to spend on TH-cam to pursue Overlanding. So they just go backpacking or car camping and have a blast.
Great video for my stock FJ 2012 with where to start for MOD 👏🏽
Dude, you’re saying everything I’ve thought for years. I grew up down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. I used 2wd vehicles, Walmart tent and sleeping bags, and never had a problem.
I always associated the term "overlanding" with Europeans that would drive a Volkswagen bus or a motorcycle to Johannesburg, or driving somewhere that you would otherwise take a ship or a plane. Then the off-roaders commandeered the term to sound sophisticated. Off-roading just doesn't have the same ring to it as overlanding (especially if you say it with a British accent).
I'd be interested to know the light output of the mini projector vs a standard halogen, or upgraded halogen like an Orsam Nightbreaker 200.
I can really appreciate this video. I enjoy hiking, but I don’t have the time to get to place I feel will give me an awesome experience. I started looking into overlanding a few months ago and everything coming up is “you need this, you need this.” I already own a Subaru Outback and I know it’s capable (same videos have told me so), however I don’t want it scratched up as it is my daily. So I’ve been looking for something mechanically sound and reliable that is no where close to breaking the bank that will be for lack of a better term, “the sacrificial lamb” getting scratched and dinged. I was ready to pay the Toyota tax until watching this video. So the cheap solid forester I’ve been keeping on the list is most likely getting moved up. Only mod, tires. I work for a tire manufacturer and get free tires every 5 years (up to 8 in that time). Thank you algorithm for putting this video in my world.
I take my 2wd Tacoma down the same shit guys w TRD pros and 5k in mods do. Got a level w 31s. 😂
Snorkel tubes on Toyotas or whatever truck are the biggest ripoff ever. Do those people actually drive their trucks underwater? Spend tens of thousands of dollars on a modern vehicle intended to NEVER be driven in water, then drive it through a river compromising the electrical system, soaking the carpets and seats. More money than brains as they say.
Go to Australia. Drive the Cape, the Simpson and the High Country. Then make a video about what overlanding REALLY is.
Bravo! I came to the channel as I shop for a truck and found this gold! 👏
I got a 2004 3.5 pathfinder last night only has 200000 miles , payed 1k and it’s nice ! Is it a R50 ? Don’t know much about them just could t pass it up
lol Nobody actually likes IPA's.. It's just something folks tell themselves so can be different!
I like ipas
For me, a trip must be over 2 weeks long to be considered overlanding. I think for a lot of people they just saw some TH-cam videos of people in Australia and Africa overlanding where overlanding is sometimes more necessary and decided they wanted to do it in the states even though there's a Starbucks and a Walmart every 50 miles
Damn I really needed this after instagram started showing me four wheel campers nonstop lol thx for saving me 10 grand, I’ll keep using my Walmart tent.
I love to see these guys with all their over landing equipment, tens of thousands of dollars into a vehicle and I’m willing to bet some hard earned money that most of these guys haven’t even really seen a 2 Track Rd. Some of them probably haven’t even got off the blacktop
Great video dude you’ve hit the bull’s-eye with this video
Yeah, back in the early 90s when I was in high school we used to go 4bying and truck camping in the mountains would be doing good if we had a cooler filled with one dollar whoppers from Burger King and a six pack of Mountain Dew a Coleman stove to cook some beans on. With no cell phone no on X maps And we had an awesome time doing it now they call it over landing and now the tech is crazy and they don’t really get anywhere that we haven’t already been! That being said, it is kind of cool to have rigs that are set up

You are correct about the 285/70/16 being overpriced. Noticed this myself over the years.
I have the falken wildpeak at3. Had em for almost 6 years and have taken them through some nasty stuff. Still have tread and still grabbing the trail with no issues. Although the age is showing. It’s showing cracks everywhere so new tires soon!
Well said. Look at my rig. Very bare bones and 2wd and I can still get out there, camp and what not
Just buy whatever you like.
Is that wolverine!?
2002 Tundra down over a YEAR. It repeatedly cracks the flex plate, usually at higher rpm. Also can hear some rumble or grind at initial acceleration, seems perhaps pronounced accelerating while turning. What's MOST LIKELY❓
1:20 parking for egression! always lol
Was watching you for a possible purchase of a Gen 1 Tundra and found this , nice work
