Why Aren't More People Saying This About Overlanding? (It's Not a Real Hobby)
มุมมอง 338K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The more time I spend car camping, the more I wonder if overlanding is even a real hobby? Seems as though all other outdoor hobbies end up overlanding and car camping as a normal means to be outside and do their other activities. So sure, overlanding can still be a stand alone hobby, but is it really good enough all by itself? Seems that driving forest service roads just for the sake of driving...

Looking at going with 265 70r16 on 16x8 wheels. Wheels come either -6 or +10 backspace. In your opinion which would be best fit? 2001 LE. Thank you
I have a center console in mine
Don’t wait 200k miles to replace ball joints.
Three years later do you still recommend a softopper? I want one for my tacoma to sleep in on a road trip.
They’re good. I moved onto a camper shell eventually, since I never ended up needing the flexibility of the softopper. Never had to take it off or fold it down after a year
I have an 02 SR5 that I share with my parents. We've had it since new. It's been on their farm for about a year. Not sure how long it was on but the check engine light was on when I picked it up. I noticed mpg was awful on the hour drive home. Scanned it and it was the up stream sensor on the passenger side. Drove it up on ramps and had it swapped out in 15 minutes. Took two hands to get the harness unplugged but still super easy. Immediately noticed an uptick in performance and fuel economy. Don't wait. Just do it.
My dad took us all over in a ford van e-350. He brought a set a chains to get us back out in the case it went bad. Queen bed in the back.
Unless you got a fat ass 2500 with a utility bed full of tools
I had a first year Tundra. It had 500,000 miles on it when I sold it for a newer Tundra. The Achilles heel was the transmission. It was weak. The front brakes wear insufficient. The lower ball joints were weak. Other than that, bullet proof.
Dude! You have no clue about Truck's. You mean T-100, and in the video, that's a 1st Gen Tundra!
Dude! You have no clue about trucks! Lol. You can easily google this. www.thedrive.com/news/the-toyota-tundra-was-nearly-called-the-t-150-until-someone-blocked-that-guess-who
The high beam/fog light issue is due to the stock fog light being wired to the low beam circuit. If you do the modification usually referred to like fog lights with high beams for your car you wont have this issue when upgrading halogen bulbs.
I was thinking about 5100 but I ended up going with locked off-road mainly because there adjustability
Toyota has never made a vehicle worth owning. Sorry, Scott Killmer
Did you notice any difference in mpg between the two?
I can’s that I did
Nice, 4x2? Will stock be good for general off-roading? No rock climbing but maybe some really muddy areas?
It’s a 4x4. Muddy stuff you’ll want mud tires
@ oooh I see thank You 🙏🏻
How do they do in the rain? It rains often here in Florida.
It doesn’t really rain much in Idaho but they seem to do fine
Just bought my self a set , I spend more time on the hwy than on dirt roads . So I’m looking forward To the reduced noise , and seeing what that can do off road and in the snow and ice
I have a 2000 Tundra. I'm the original owner. It has over 275k miles on it, and have had no major mechanical issues with it. I've had the oil changed on schedule since day one. I will keep this vehicle road worthy until I can no longer drive. I'm currently 62yrs old and I know this truck will last me till I can no longer drive...Best vehicle I've ever owned!!!!
I own a 2003 Tundra sr5 extra cab, a 2005 Tundra Limited double cab & a 2006 Sequoia sr5 & people always ask me to sell them my trucks. I love these vehicles because of thier reliability. The engine is bullet proof
Better, they smoked Ford
So.. this guy is wrong and he's totally okay with that.. alright
I’m wrong if we’re talking about dry pavement performance. But I’m concerned with off road and inclement weather conditions for 4WD vehicles- in some of those cases, you may prefer skinny tires
Me and my group of friends do the best combination of camping. Some of us camp in our trucks, others in tents, and we bring good food with stoves and tables and ofc beer with plenty of firewood. Half of us have built rigs and others stock trucks and it all gets the job done. U dont need to buy an onboard refrigerator, solar panels, super expensive mods, drawer storage and roof racks with rooftop tents to go camp somewhere cool and have a good time
That’s the way to do it!
You still need to remove the part inside the halogen housing that is in front of the tip of the bulb though for these to work correctly, so there’s that.
Thanks for the info. My first winter coming up for the 4Runner and read the Orem Dunlop AT20’s are not get in the snow. Will add these tires to the list
I don't care what anyone says. The best truck I ever had and still have is a 08 tundra. I just wish they made a 3/4 ton.
I have an 03 Tundra 4.7 4wd TRD... and I love the living shit out of this truck. I'll probably never get rid of it.
Awesome video's brother...Yes your definitely right you don't need all that stuff and it is true that their people out there that are hard on the land and don't respect the land...But after a few adventurers on logging with my 1990 Chevy suburban deer hunting on minimum maintenance roads which can take you very very deep into the big woods where you can run into very challenging obstacles like flooded looging roads, sloppy mud with uneven terrain with big ruts, tree roots some rocks downed trees, ice, snow. The type of terrain I'm talking about for my overlanding adventure takes guts, determination, no fear, and a tenacity to succeed 💪 in harvesting big game. Really overlanding is what you make it to be. For me it's about the adventure, the experience, the memories with friends and family and a true exciting challenging enjoyable adventure. You see when you r on on an overlanding, camping, fishing, big game hunting or whatever, you should be prepared for whatever comes your way. When you do this type of overlanding, your going to find out really quickly that 4x4 isn't really 4x4 which i found out on an adventure in the big woods of Northern Minnesota deer hunting when i got stuck and got my axles hung up on a logging road that had some big holes that swamped my passenger fron and back BFG KO2 33x9.5 on a 15 inch rims, 2 inch lift and because i thought 4x4 was indestructible and all 4 wheels would get me out, again found out really quickly thay i didn't have a true 4 wheel drive. What a disappointment! I had no winch, or a cable, snatch block or and other gear to get me unstuck. A 90 suburban is a heavy vehicle needing a 12, 000 winch with recovery gear...I was 2 miles in, by myself and no one to help me. $370 later after hiking out a fireman going to his cabin called for a tow truck to get me out. Both front and rear axles are open differential which means only one tire spins. So there you have its a 4x2, only 2 tires are working not all 4. So we've been duped to believe by the car industry that it's a true 4 wheel drive which it isn't. The only way to make a true 4wheel drive is by adding a locking differential like an ARB LOCKER in the differential made by an Australian company that's been around for years. Long story short....Lol 😂, your going to need some kind of gear for whatever your adventure you take to go into the back country. My charge to get me out was cheep, but other places like Colorado there are shady companies including corrupt law enforcement agencies that work together to scam overlanding, rock crawling or whoever gets stuck in their trail booby traps like making watered trails with big mud holes to purposely get your 4x4 stuck so they can charge you $4500 to $10000 dollars. And this was a simple trail anyone can do. So point taken, you need to be prepared no matter what adventure you go on regardless if its just exploring. A friend of mine had a 2019 Suburu Outback and his transmission broke on an semi difficult easier trail and he's pretty careful and babies his rig. So again, you need the right gear no matter what. A suburu is not a 4x4. Those transmission are only made for the easier stuff regardless of what suburu advertises. After that expensive repair, he switch to a Toyota 4runner 2017 5th gen. Regardless of what you decide, make sure you've done your research and be prepared for the worst, because when your out on an adventure far away from main roads, something could happen. 😊😊
Well since the F series in general has been the best selling truck in north america for 47 years in a row, id say the toyota hasnt done great at trying to dethrone it
They did GREAT ❤
What head lights I need them
To me the 1st gen tundra Just looks like a bigger tacoma
🤝
Great video, you are correct 👍
While I agree with the overall sentiment of this video I'm left with one major question. Why do you care? If a person finds joy in building a $100,000 mall crawler good on them. If they found joy out of the build than that's all that should matter. I'm not sure you or I should judge what is is or isn't a hobby or the things that may make an individual happy doing. I'm sure there are people that would look at your setup and could be just as critical. That guy is cooking a sausage over a fire that wasn't started with flint, and why didn't he catch, kill, then cook. Or, why isn't he on a horse with a canvas tent? I have spent hundreds of nights in a tent backpacking, during river trips, and straight out of a car. I've frozen and been nearly cooked and everything in between. I'm currently considering a basic teardrop for the added comforts and convenience. Is that wrong? Finally, I think a lot of overlanding equipment is about confidence. It gives them more safety and comfort and makes it more likely they will explore the great outdoors. I'm all for that, but then again I really agree with you that you should just get out there with what you got. Add what you need as you go. There should be no financial barrier to experiencing the outdoors, but I also don't think we should judge how people approach them.
Everyone wants that Gen Tundra. No one wants a 10th Gen F-150
And you can buy decent tires in the normal sizes. I'd rather run Michelins in stock size than China tires in whatever size
I agree with your assessment. Bought a new 04 Taco and put on 225k trouble free miles. Driving a 05 Tundra now and it is twice the truck as the Taco. Better ride, towing, acceleration, comfort. Feels more solid and composed. I do give up a couple miles per gallon however.
It’s ok to say you have a gat piece bro, most of us do 😎 😂😂
Stud of a buck btw
Would rather not get the video demonetized, just erring on the side of caution. Thank you sir
The worse looking ford pick up truck made
Its not about inches of contact its about pounds per inch of contact
Nice! I love them Gen 1s! ❤
When you live in a mountain tourist town you see these types all over. Its sad/funny/pathetic
Those tires will fit on a stock suspension as well, right? I will eventually get the lift done, but really want to tires as the stocks one are so skinny with a +20 offset and those look so good with that lift so it ticks two boxes at once
You’re gonna have to trim the fenders on anything larger than a 31” tire
Horse Packing (loading up a horse and riding trails, often camping and fishing) is a peaceful and fun way to travel off the beaten path. For the price of a “rig” you can pay for quite a few phenomenal guided horse packing tours, see more, and impact these natural landscapes much less.
I need a weekend warrior 😂am looking for a good deal
2000-2006? Are reliable? I was looking at one this morning online decently priced a 2000 & a 2006. Which years do the back window roll down?
Only double cabs have roll down windows. Double cab is 04-06 only
@ oh sweet I am keeping an eye out to buy. Thanks 🙏🏻
overlanding is cool... but it's also the modern world pushing itself into nature as hard as possible I feel like... also its mostly for rich people... or people with money to waste
I’m so glad someone made this video.
If you don’t enjoy it, quit.
Very good! Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks
SPOT ON.
