Icon Add-A-Leaf Tacoma/Tundra Review - It's Not That Great

- I'm not convinced that this Icon Add-A-Leaf is that great of a product. The ride is improved, but I'm confused and dissatisfied by the lift height.

As a 2nd Gen Tacoma owner with a full leaf spring pack by Icon (matched with Bilstein 5160 shocks), they're phenomenal. I got them installed by an offroad shop about 2.5 years ago. Initially I got 3" of lift but it's since settled to about 2" of lift (matched with 2" up front on 6112's). I had the shop install the medium load bearing pack (meaning I still have an extra leaf spring). At one point (and the reason I got the lift at all) I was driving cross country with everything I owned, and a Leer shell with a hardshell RTT mounted on top. About 1,000 lbs of total weight, and the springs performed flawlessly. Now though i only have the shell and maybe another 80-100 lbs in the back at all times and they're still great. I can't speak to a Tundra's experience but for me, they're way better than stock. Would get them all over again. The parts were about $700 when I had them ordered.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Icon makes a leaf pack for the 1st Gen tundra. Glad you’re happy with your setup though!
I've got a 2nd gen longbed Taco with the Icon AAL and an ARE topper with OTR/bedliner spray. Original leaf springs had 120k miles on them when I threw on the AAL. It's been great for the past couple years. Still maintains a slight rake with my 2.5" lift up front. When loaded down with around 300lbs, it starts to level out. I think I will upgrade to the RXT leaf pack once it wears out.
i've got the Icon AAL on my 05 reg cab tundra. i kept the overload on it and with my cap i got ~1.5" of lift.. no complaints. towing is a very good with it.. without the overload left on i would of been disappointed with the lift.
all that being said in the future i hope to go with a archive garage medium duty set of leafs (maybe HD.. it is my primary tow rig.. but ive seen no need for more load capacity with what ive got already)
I ordered HD springs from General Spring for my 2005 double cab. Instead of a 3/1 spring pack, the HD's are 4/1. They ride nice, not harsh at all and they firm up the ride really well. I can't remember off hand how much lift they give, but my truck doesn't sag in the rear anymore when it's loaded with stuff and things
I have also looked at the General Springs! I could find much lift info for the HD’s either
@@208Tyler
I put an OME front suspension on my truck and it gave me 2 1/2" of lift in the front. With the stock setup, the rear sat about 3/4" lower than the front. With the HD springs, the rear is about 1/2" taller empty and perfectly level loaded...
That’s awesome!
My first attempt at lifting the rear of the TBst I use the ICON add-a-leaf. I remove the overload leaf as well. In the end, the only lift I got was the thickness of the leaf pack.
I would just bin the OG springs and addaleaf and call Eric at Archive Garage.
Yup! That would be my go to to upgrade from here.
So this is actually what was originally advertised as a progressive overload. Somewhere in the last couple years they changed the description. When I installed the Icon progressive overload spring pack, I did a bunch of research mainly on Tacoma world, and found several people that kept the overloads. I went the same route installing the Icon overload pack between the overloads and the main spring pack. My main reason for adding the Icon pack, was to combat the droopy rear end that Toyotas are famous for- I tow small 10-12’ utility trailers and even empty they still dropped the rear end.
Full disclosure- I run a set of ARB expeditions rear springs with the ARB add-a-leaf with no rear sway bar( truck didn’t have one when I bought it) the Icons and ARB overload springs gave me about 2- 1/2” of lift and a lot less sway. Additional bonus my trailers run just a touch nose high, tows great. Well as good as a Tacoma can tow anyway.
I have a 2006 Tundra AC Limited 4wd. I have a fiberglass shell and tend to carry a bunch of tools, ladders, etc. About 6-7 years ago I installed Bilstein 6112 set at 1" lift per Bilstein instructions. On the rear, I installed the Wheeler's Off-Road version of the add-a-leaf without the overload spring and Bilstein 5160. Initial rear ride height was slightly over 1.5", but after 70K+ miles, the rear is sagging a little again. I wish I had kept my overload springs, but they are long gone. I'm currently looking at my options. I no longer need to carry as much weight, so I need to clean it out. Fortunately I live within driving distance of both Deaver and Atlas Spring, so I can save on shipping. It sucks that Icon doesn't make an off the shelf spring pack for the Tundra.
I feel the same way but if you add the iron man 4x4 load helper and the icon add a leaf it’ll lift and remove sag with load and the downside it’ll ride a tad more rougher as I’ve experienced with my 01 tundra
Ok, thanks for sharing! Haven't heard of that combo before
I have a 02 AC Tundra just like yours put this on with a bilstein 5100 lift and I kept the overload in and it’s definitely close to 1.5” taller. Also I have the HD leaf pack form factory with a extra leaf in the middle so in total, I had 5 leaf springs not the normal 4. That might have affected why I only got .5” of lift. If you still have the overload I would just put it back in.
Did you measure exactly? I don’t really wanna tear it all apart again, I’ll likely move to a different setup all together
@@208TylerNo didn’t measure but 100% taller than .5” like 1.25-1.5 I would say but I also have an extra leaf than you do already so idk. Do what you will with this. And also all of this is with nothing in the bed. It would be cool to see what you go to if you go with something different. Also are you still doing rock sliders?
I want to do rock sliders really bad. Most of the options involve welding, which I would like to learn, sooooo, gotta save up and make plans for both 😂
After going with a archive rear pack and Perry parts rear bumps with 5160s the money was well worth it for the performance! Gained way to much lift but it is what it is😂
Archive seems to be the way to go for leaves!
I went with the Icon RXT leaf packs. Love the ability to configure differently based on bed & cargo weight.
Same weight as you, brand new ome shocks at the time of installing. Im at same lift, but sagging compared to front lift. Im constantly hitting the bump stops off road.
Im going to bite the bullet and go archive springs and the 12" shock travel bracket.
I’ve heard good things about archive garage!
Really glad you shared this. I was wondering if I should do this.
Does say on their site that it'll sag more under load with the add a leaf than the regular leaf pack. I read that as good offroad, but not for loading up. Guessing the weight of your fiberglass topper is what's mainly not giving you the lift. Heavier bed than a tacoma, camp gear, etc doesn't help either. When I stand on my tailgate it drops almost an inch. Curious what it would be without the topper on. I'd chuck that overload spring back in and see how it rides. Great info, man. Thanks
Ya. I 100% should've searched a little more before I bought it. But, oh well. It's fine, it's just not quite getting the job done for me.
No really more to comment, other then I went the expensive route with archive garage leafs and really happy with the outcome 👍🏼
Ya, full leaf packs seem to be the way to go.
My springs seem way too soft. I bottom out on small bumps with 5 40 pound bags of chicken feed behind the rear axle
I picked up Timbren bumpstops for the saggy days. 🤣
I need to add bumpstops and flip kit!
@@208Tyler Check out the Timbrens.
Great video here. Looking at lifting my truck as well. I imagine you would have preferred the add-a-leaf over lifting blocks for the rear? Im seeing alot of people running a spacer in the front and a block in the rear. Im leaning towards not doing this and upgrading to bilsteins up front and add-a-leaf in the rear just as you have but hoping to get 2-3'' lifted and leveled. thanks for making these videos.
Yes. I prefer this to blocks.
I'm using 2" blocks in the rear currently. I don't like them. I had a new bumper installed on my 2018 TRD Off Road Tacoma, with a winch. Has 5100's and OME 887 coil overs on the front. They absorbed the extra weight too much and the front was 2" higher than the stock rear with 5100's in the rear. I have an ARE cap and carry about 100lbs worth of tools in the back. I put the 2" blocks in the rear because I was squatting. I'm still trying to decide which route to go as money is tight. I'd already spent more than I wanted to on the struts, coils, bumper, winch, and shocks along with the install.
Other's in different toyota groups I'm in have said to get the Icon AAL and leave the overload spring in and that should put me back level and possibly a little rake back in the rear. If the leaf packs weren't so expensive I'd just upgrade those, but I think the icon aal for now will give me what I want and later on down the road, I can upgrade the leaf packs. My main concern with the blocks is I'm putting a stress point on the center of the leaf pack and I'm so afraid I'm going to either crack them or break them. That's why I'm hoping to do the aal in the next few weeks. I've got a trip to GA coming up and I'm in South Florida. I'd rather not do that drive with 2" blocks.
The icon, all pro, and wheelers are all the same part. I got about an 1.5” on my double cab 6 foot bed Tacoma with a wheels AAL. The tacoma composite bed is much lighter
Added air bags. increased rear lift. and softer.
You ever thought about adding back the overload spring to see what difference that makes?
It’ll add about a 1/2” of height. I think I measured it at 5/8” thick. I’ve thought about it, but haven’t decided to do it
Did you take off the topper and the plywood in the back to see how much lift it gives you without your extra weight?
No, I have not. Wouldn’t matter, since I want to keep that stuff on.
Would you suggest swapping to a full OME new leaf springs? I was about to get this add a leaf and then your vid popped up. I have an 06’ DC and carry a snowmobile in the back. Seems okay without but I’m adding a 2” lift in the front next week with new shocks/ springs on all 4 corners next week.
Archive garage and a few other companies offer competent leaf packs. I’m not familiar with the OME leaf springs, unfortunately.
Edit: does OME even offer a full leaf pack? I’m seeing add a leafs from them
@@208Tyler Old Man Emu makes them. I’ve done them before on a taco build. Just wasn’t sure how dissatisfied your were with the add a leaf.
By all means, provide me a link. I can't find any full replacement leaf packs for a 1st gen tundra. I don't like my icon AAL and would've picked something different if I was doing it again. It's gonna get pulled off my truck at some point
Thanks for the vid. Good info. I added this to my 2020 tundra and its a squeak/creak monster! Im spraying wd40 silicon every week! Trying to figure this out. Open for any suggestions
Man I’m not sure. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that
I am thinking about adding this to my rig due to an added roof top tent and bed rack. About 200 pound of weight. Do you know if the Icon will support the added weight? Thanks.
I don’t even know what truck you have….
In general, a full leaf pack is a better choice
@@208Tyler I have 04 Tacoma with Pro leaf springs, wondering if the Icon ad on would support the extra weight.
@@theschuntz maybe. A full leaf pack is a surer bet though
You should put the overload back it'll ride way better
Thier instructions as of today does say keep overload spring in
On 00-06 tundra? Then they’ve been changed
@@208Tyler From the Icon instructions:
1. SOME LEAF PACKS MAY HAVE A SPRING CLIP THAT WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED TO ALLOW FOR INSTALLATION OF THE ICON ADD A LEAF KIT.
2. LEAVING THE FACTORY OVERLOAD LEAF INSTALLED IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
