DEFINING A "WOMAN"| Are Trans-Women "Real" Women?
Trying to answer the question: “what is a woman?” based on a couple of different discussions with liberal and conservative friends I met over the summer.
Again, I just want to reiterate that this video is NOT meant to target or ridicule any group of people, or demean the identities of trans individuals: it is simply a collection of many different opinions/ viewpoints that I thought provided interesting dimensions to this debate. The video does not exclusively reflect my personal beliefs either. As I mentioned, the middle ground reached was a sort of compromise between the left and the right, and should be taken as just another set of opinions on a very complicated matter.
Disclaimers aside though, I really enjoyed making this conversation-based kind of video! It was really fun to talk to people with differing beliefs and to put all these ideas into one structured essay. I hope you enjoyed the video as well!

    Simple answer, yes. The whole point of democracy is to avoid bad dictators, but it throws the baby out with the bathwater. The biggest problem of a Benevolent Dictator is succession. A benevolent dictator can cut out red tape, implement long term plans without worrying about the election cycle and having his plans erased by new administrations, implement good instead of populist policies, focus on the will of the people instead of the will of lobbyists and campaign donors. Aside from Sankara, Jerry Rawlings in Ghana was a great dictator. Same with Gaddafi, regardless of the lies the Western Press have peddled about him. Even in the Bible, Christ will rule on earth as a Benevolent Dictator for 1000 years.

    I do have a setting which does explore this issue, with it being a benevolent dictatorship that emerged after a weak democracy caved in under its own weight. It is good to see this debate so I can properly show the moral complexity, with the key question of the setting being "Would you sacrifice your freedom if it meant that you no longer had to worry about homelessness, gang violence or poverty?", since while the dictatorship is doing purges where officials found to be dissidents are imprisoned or "kill themselves", the dictatorship has made genuine improvements, since it has made sure each citizen gets a roof over their head, food on their plate, free healthcare and the assurance that their children won't be illiterate.

    What we call human nature is in fact a mix of coping mechanism and cognitive distortion. That’s not human nature. Human nature is being reasonable. Using reason! Why we use emotions as guide for our life? Emotions are alarm to tell us that something is wrong and that we need to adress but most people make emotional reasoning and instead of taking emotions as alarm, they take emotions as proof. It’s like changing cars everytime a light light up in the dashboard instead of finding the problem and fix it.

    Citizens has access to a full load of informations and they still can’t USE their rational thinking ability. Baruch Spinoza - the father of modern democracy, he lived in the 17th century - was truly a rational men. He predicted our times 400 years ago. I explain below… The whole thought of Spinoza is in fact based on the idea that an individual will agree all the better with others that he is well in tune with himself. In other words, our democracies will be as more solid, energetic and fervent than the individuals who compose it will be able to dominate their sad passions - fear, anger, resentment envy, etc. And that they will lead their existence according to their reason. Even if he doesn't says it directly, we also understand that citizens who are more driven by their emotions instead of by their reason could elect dictators or demagogues.

    Best discourse on this matter I came across so far. It's ridiculous how many people spread the message that trans women are "real" women, but are unable to provide a definition or an explanation when they are approached by the other side. I like yours. Though, I must say that I prefer the "old" definition, because it arguably provides more useful information and is less vague. Referring to the past in order to make a definition work, as you have done, is also a reason why I wouldn't necessarily adopt it.

    Thanks for the video it is very informative! I think the problem is that what the word 'trans woman' refers to in most people's mind is different from what a trans woman herself would want the word to refer to. To say trans woman is real woman is to acknowledge the womanness in them therefore provide acceptance and recognition to them. Sometimes this becomes the norm that saying trans woman is not a real woman will be taken by the other side as denying the womanness in them therefore othering them and not recognizing them at all. The word 'trans woman' wants to borrow meanings from traditionally-established word 'woman' to justify itself. But once the justification is done, the two words can be detached.

    • @political_teen
      @political_teen ปีที่แล้ว

      Very well explained! I didn't consider this point of view before, but you make a very valid argument. The root of the issue truly is just miscommunication and not understanding what the other person is actually trying to get out of the debate.

    I found your definition of “woman” (one that avoided making reference to physical anatomy) to be a bit cumbersome. I’d like to suggest a definition of “woman” that could also include trans-women as: “Adult females, or those adults who have the will to be female.” Seems to cut to the chase, non?

    • @political_teen
      @political_teen ปีที่แล้ว

      But then the definition implies that they only WANT to be female, and are not actually female, but could still identify as a woman. Wouldn't it be a dangerous precedent to set if anyone can identify as whatever they WANT instead of ARE? For example, would you accept that I identify as a black woman because I want to, and then apply for benefits available to black citizens (i.e., affirmative action, etc)?

    • @DeathRayGraphics
      @DeathRayGraphics ปีที่แล้ว

      @@political_teen Yes, that would be the point: To come up with a definition that disentangles the social concept of “womanhood” or “manhood” from tne brute fact of the body-which is another way of saying: Disconnecting the concept of gender from the idea that it is only a descriptor of physical sex. Mind you, I do not agree with adopting that definition I provided (I really don’t think it is practical, and I feel that using “trans-man” or “trans-woman” is the correct compromise). However, I offer it as a more efficient way of explaining what some transgender people want “man” and “woman” to mean going forward.

    You made a lot of good points until you got into the part about the mask mandate. The claim "mask mandate could have saved thounsands of lives" is a completely incongruous statement, and even cite China as an example of how mask mandates are helpful is completely wrong. USA has faced the most severe growth of the covid-19 spread among its population than any other foreign country in spite, or even because of the mask mandate, it has long been proven by scientists that masks are one of the most common carriers of viruses. Sweden never enfocred neither mask mandates nor obligatory vaccination and they are the least covid-19 infected nation among any European country. The only reason why it worked for China is because they were the very first nation to take actions to stop the spread, not because they happen to be a dictatorship. I understand that I have gone far from the topic of benevolent dictatorships and weak democracies, but unfortunately your video carries a certain agenda, which I really wanted to refute. And it is quite ironic that such words come from a benevolent dictatorships apologizer, as if it wasn't obvious enough who exactly would push statist rules even if they backfire on everyone.

    • @political_teen
      @political_teen ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to provide me with this feedback! I truly do appreciate any form of criticism on my channel, as it makes me more aware of any flaws or gaps in my arguments. Concerning the mask mandate, I do understand your contention. There are many variables that influence the genuine effectiveness of mask-wearing when countering disease-spread that I did not mention during the video purely due to lack of time, such as the type of mask; whether it is worn properly, etc. Overwhelmingly, however, the data does support that wearing masks does cut down transmission of the disease. It is the extent to which it cuts down such transmissions which is disputed (again, due to the difficulty of measuring the effectiveness of masks when so many other variables cannot be controlled.) I would recommend reading this nature article which provides more statistics and individual studies to support the effectiveness of masks. www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02801-8 Nonetheless, it was not my intention at all during the video to support any form of agenda; I was merely collating arguments from both sides of the debate and putting them in video form. If it did come off as an insincere debate, then I will definitely take greater heed in future videos to remain more unbiased :) About your opinion on China's response having nothing to do with being a semi-dictatorship, I must disagree. China took very drastic (and arguably undemocratic) measures to counter the spread of corona, which DEFINITELY would not have been able to take place in any other democratic nation. An example of this is their use of cash applications which allowed the government to keep track of people's movements and even stop people with confirmed infections from traveling (link below) www.xinhuanet.com/tech/2020-02/19/c_1125596647.htm www.science.org/content/article/china-s-aggressive-measures-have-slowed-coronavirus-they-may-not-work-other-countries My argument was that, through being a dictatorship, China was able to enforce demands on their populations which a democracy, such as the US, would not have been able to impose due to fear of population uprising and protest. Could you imagine the US government trying to track people's movements through applications, or giving administrative detentions to those who do not abide by quarantine laws? People would go ballistic due to their "democratic" way of life. I hope that clears up the argument a bit. Have a good day!

    The moment we choose dictators is the moment we suppressed the voice of the minority, the opposition, the alternate view, the devil's advocate, the counter ideas or call it whatever you like. Our society needs that. And if we think about the labors and time it will spend, still it is worth it. Oppositions play an important role. It gave a different picture, an alternate view. it will expose blind spots and weaknesses. Suppressive regimes are known to crack after years and years of suppressing dissidents. On the other hand, Western Democracy thrived because of the opposition views countering the mainstream views and exposing the weakside of an argument. hence, as Hegel put it any idea (thesis) that may not have been subject to opposition or a test (antithesis) could not attain perfection and certainly be flawed (which is a failure to attain synthesis). In other words, benevolent dictators may not be able to function well. Because even at times of emergency, it is still a rule of the democracy represented by the few. It could be the cabinet, the ministers, or the advisers.
