Is The World WRONG About Aung San Suu Kyi? | 5-Minute Debate

  • Defying all restrictions and putting their lives on the line, tens of thousands of protesters in Myanmar have taken to the streets, rising up against a military coup that has detained Myanmar’s former state counselor, and national hero, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Renowned for being the face of Myanmar’s struggle for democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi brought an end to authoritarian military rule in her nation- earning her a Nobel Peace Prize and overwhelming international praise.
However, not long after her rise to power, Suu Kyi’s reputation began to unravel at the seams with allegations of genocide being put forth against her nation, leading to what many now call Aung San Suu Kyi’s “fall from grace”.
Yet, despite all the heavy international criticism pointed towards Suu Kyi, the majority of Myanmar’s population still stands unwaveringly behind her.
But why is that? Why is Aung a fallen angel to some, yet a savior for others? Could the international world be missing a crucial piece of this puzzle or are we correct in thinking she has truly taken a turn for the worst?
Let’s take a look at a couple of arguments from both sides of this spectrum, in the form of a little debate.

Could you elaborate on 'the merciless terrorising of citizens who oppose her decisions'? I have never heard these allegations before.
All-in-all, good effort on trying to provide a balanced argument. It is a bit jarring to hear her name mispronounced so often though. The letters 'ky' are pronounced 'ch', so her name is pronounced as Aung San Suu Chee. Also, when you are referring to her by her first name, Suu Kyi would be more accurate. Just trying to help.

Thank you so much for your feedback. It really means a lot! I need all the help I can get :)
You're right in the sense that the statement above was poorly phrased. By citizens who 'oppose her decisions', I meant the Rohingya, who oppose the laws that have been placed against them (1982 citizenship law) and the decision to refuse to recognize them as a separate ethnic group, despite them representing the largest % of Muslims in Myanmar.

However, these laws were passed before Suu Kyi came into power, so you're right in pointing out that the statement was misleading.
I guess what I meant to say was her "silence" towards the violence made against those that oppose the government's decisions.
Also, thank you for pointing out that I misread her name: I should really look into the pronunciation from now on, because this is not the first time I've made this mistake, haha.

      Have a good evening :)

@@political_teen No problem, just trying to help. I am way too close to the situation to try and be impartial but I appreciate what you were going for and the way you approach your channel's content.
I see now what you meant, but yes, as you have pointed out those laws were put in place before her time in power. Even then, the Ministry of Home Affairs was one of the branches of government not under civilian power so she could not have done anything had she wanted to. I am not an apologist of hers, and I think some of the other points you raised about raising a successor and delegating more to build a party that represents Myanmar's diverse ethnic groups are very valid. As far as the Rohingya issue is concerned, she was in a lose-lose situation and ultimately her decision was hers alone, right or wrong.
Keep up the good work and good luck with your channel. I'll pop in from time to time and hope to see it grow!
