DEFINING A "WOMAN"| Are Trans-Women "Real" Women?

  • Trying to answer the question: “what is a woman?” based on a couple of different discussions with liberal and conservative friends I met over the summer.
Again, I just want to reiterate that this video is NOT meant to target or ridicule any group of people, or demean the identities of trans individuals: it is simply a collection of many different opinions/ viewpoints that I thought provided interesting dimensions to this debate. The video does not exclusively reflect my personal beliefs either. As I mentioned, the middle ground reached was a sort of compromise between the left and the right, and should be taken as just another set of opinions on a very complicated matter.
Disclaimers aside though, I really enjoyed making this conversation-based kind of video! It was really fun to talk to people with differing beliefs and to put all these ideas into one structured essay. I hope you enjoyed the video as well!

Best discourse on this matter I came across so far. It's ridiculous how many people spread the message that trans women are "real" women, but are unable to provide a definition or an explanation when they are approached by the other side. I like yours. Though, I must say that I prefer the "old" definition, because it arguably provides more useful information and is less vague. Referring to the past in order to make a definition work, as you have done, is also a reason why I wouldn't necessarily adopt it.

Appreciate the feedback! I see what you mean by the vagueness of the definition, but I guess that's the whole "niche" of the left: being as vague as possible in order to limit the exclusion of any group, and thus, be as politically correct as possible.🤷‍♀

    An adult, human, female.
You have to be all three to be a woman.
A female, human, kid cant be a woman until she is an adult.

Thanks for the video it is very informative!
I think the problem is that what the word 'trans woman' refers to in most people's mind is different from what a trans woman herself would want the word to refer to. To say trans woman is real woman is to acknowledge the womanness in them therefore provide acceptance and recognition to them. Sometimes this becomes the norm that saying trans woman is not a real woman will be taken by the other side as denying the womanness in them therefore othering them and not recognizing them at all. The word 'trans woman' wants to borrow meanings from traditionally-established word 'woman' to justify itself. But once the justification is done, the two words can be detached.

Very well explained! I didn't consider this point of view before, but you make a very valid argument. The root of the issue truly is just miscommunication and not understanding what the other person is actually trying to get out of the debate.

Of course "trans" woman are not woman. He is a man.
There is no such thing as Transformer human. That is a loving fact. Just like we can't go from one species to another because we identify as it.
No one is born in the wrong body because there is no right and wrong to be you. ❤

@@political_teen btw I tried going your website but it's gone? It would be really cool to have space to talk politics, I really like yours because they pragmatic and sensible with reality it's the moderate center that has been killed these days of madness. Your channel deserves a lot more views.

@@wucash5672 Thank you so much for your kind words: they honestly mean a lot to me! I took down the website as I was not posting as many articles as I was videos (so, the website seemed redundant compared to the TH-cam channel), and I was also getting larger exposure on TH-cam, Instagram, etc, compared to the website.
Tbh, I've always wanted to turn my work into a platform for all types of political discussion, but it's been quite difficult to stand out amongst the other political TH-cam channels on here, so I haven't had much success in creating a large-scale space to talk politics.
Nonetheless, I'd love to have one-on-one political discussions with anyone interested, so if you just send me a message on my instagram (ig.politicalteen), I'll be sure to respond :)

I found your definition of “woman” (one that avoided making reference to physical anatomy) to be a bit cumbersome.
I’d like to suggest a definition of “woman” that could also include trans-women as: “Adult females, or those adults who have the will to be female.” Seems to cut to the chase, non?

    • @political_teen
      @political_teen  ปีที่แล้ว

But then the definition implies that they only WANT to be female, and are not actually female, but could still identify as a woman. Wouldn't it be a dangerous precedent to set if anyone can identify as whatever they WANT instead of ARE? For example, would you accept that I identify as a black woman because I want to, and then apply for benefits available to black citizens (i.e., affirmative action, etc)?

@@political_teen Yes, that would be the point: To come up with a definition that disentangles the social concept of “womanhood” or “manhood” from tne brute fact of the body-which is another way of saying: Disconnecting the concept of gender from the idea that it is only a descriptor of physical sex.
Mind you, I do not agree with adopting that definition I provided (I really don’t think it is practical, and I feel that using “trans-man” or “trans-woman” is the correct compromise). However, I offer it as a more efficient way of explaining what some transgender people want “man” and “woman” to mean going forward.
