  • Being home to the longest Mediterranean coastlines in the region, Greece and Turkey have often fallen into dispute over who owns what territory of the sea.
And with massive gas reserves recently being uncovered near both countries, many fear that this dispute over authority could trigger a potential war.
But why has this topic sparked so much tension? Why is it so difficult to determine who the territory truly belongs to?
Let’s take a look at some of the arguments given by both Greece and Turkey on why the gas reserves legally belong to them, simplified, and in the form of a little debate.

Big on emotions, small on facts.
Islands do have a continental shelf according to the law of the sea/unclos.
Saying they dont implies the uk, indonesia, Philippines and many others do not have an eez.
According to the U.N the breakaway northern part of cyprus is an illegal entity and the republic of cyprus has full jurisdiction over all cyprus regardless of the inability to govern over the north due to turkeys military presence.
Now heres some food for thought, if turkeys claims are correct then why would multi billion dollar multinational conglomerates invest in cypriot off shore fields.?, surely successful companies like Eni, total, kogas, exxon, etc have legal experts to advice them,no?

Sorry for giving you a thumbs down but I respectfully disagree with some of your points. According to international maritime law signed by most of the world and Turkey refuses to recognise, islands have the right to a exclusive economic zone. If Turkey feels so right in its beliefs then why does it refuse to go to the international court with Greece to sort this issue out and the reason is that the court will take into account the International maritime law. In minute 5.16 where you are saying it is backed by the law, you are not showing the actual law, but a part from someone’s paper who has written on the dispute and their credibility is questionable.
Cyprus has a government that is recognised in the UN and in the EU as the government representing the whole island and therefore that government has the only right to sign deals for the islands natural resources. Again Turkey refuses to recognise the official government of Cyprus and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and occupation of the northern part is Illegal and condemned by the UN. However any earnings from the natural resources should be divided to both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Which the Cypriot government has agreed to do.

demkap07 Hey! Thank you so much for expressing your opinions and beliefs, you have no reason to be sorry! As mentioned at the beginning of the video, these arguments do not reflect my opinions. I created this debate through researching pro-Cyprus and pro-Turkey websites, and then collecting all their most popular arguments and putting it into a video. This doesn’t mean that the points they make are correct or justified; they’re just the most popular arguments from either side. As for the law mentioned in the article, this was also commonly referred to in many Turkish articles I read. However, you are correct. It was misleading. I should’ve made it clear that this is not truly a legislation. Nonetheless, thank you so much for your feedback, I hope this hasn’t tainted your opinion of my channel!

Turkey does not refuse go to court, Greece does. Because Turkey wants to debate every issue both in mediterranean and the Eagean but Greece only wants to talk about east med and refuses. Also Many countries signed a stupid maritime regulations doesnt mean that you can enforce it to Turkey. For the Cyprus Turkey is a guarantor country that gives them the right to intervene if Greeks try to genocide the Turks in the island which is what happened. Fact check please and dont spread lies.
