Lets Thrift at Vinnies, Salvos South Geelong and Lifeline Breakwater. Book Donation Outrage!
มุมมอง 60219 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today we are on the hunt for treasure. We find some, and we also find what happens to book donations on occasion. This is a topic that really upsets me and the attitude to books by some shops really sucks. I just hope that this video might change the rubbish behaviour. I found some sneakers and other bits and pieces. I do think it is time that the charity communities look at how they do busines...

    Yes its crazy price, but the really good stuff Salvos and Vinnie's gets never hits the floor, keeping in mind Vinnie's has large numbers of bequests each year including real estate in Newcastle Vinnie's owns over 2000 houses left to the Catholic church by victims

      Wow, that certainly takes me back. I don’t think so. God, I remember buying books from that joint years ago. There is a secondhand bookshop, in fact, two of them in Geelong that I know of.

  • @The-Cosmic-Hobo

    Over the past 2-3 decades "Op Shops" have shifted towards being purely a profit stream for charities. Books sadly have very little value any more. How many second hand bookshops even exist now, compared to 30 years ago? (I once walked the streets of Melb CBD til I had blisters on my blisters visiting all their 2nd hand bookshops) This is not surprising... But I am sure it is not only books that are being tossed by charities, and I am sure it's not just Vinnies chucking books...

    Op shops like Vinnies and salvos used to be cheap to help the poor. But their business model has changed, they now sell for profit, as the money raised can help in better ways that create real change for the disadvantaged. So don’t be too quick to criticise higher prices in op shops. And the volunteers there probably don’t have the authority to give away items for free, I am sure there would be protocols to follow, as in any other business. Did any of the customers in the shop offer the buy the poor lady some shoes? We often criticise without knowing the whole story.

    • @geelong-flipper
      @geelong-flipper วันที่ผ่านมา

      I get that in my background is I am an ex Volunteer at Vinnies. They are authorized to help people in need using stock in the shop. The only issue with overpricing and op shops is that they do use the money to help but the prices are so high it puts the public off buying them. Considering inventory is sourced for free turnover should be the primary focus.

    I live in Canada and I also sell worldwide. The issue for Canadians is the cost of shipping books. Anything over 2cm costs a package rate (approx. $20 or more in Canada and the US - much more for overseas). Therefore I mostly sell stamps, covers and postcards. I have some great books I would love to sell online but who wants to pay an extra $20 for a book? Lots (multiple books) might work but it's not worth the trouble. Even a thin book (under 2cm) can be rejected if it is "too stiff". I do like to watch your channel though (maybe it's the accent :) There is no tracking included when mailing using a standard envelope, but thankfully most stamp and postcard collectors are honest. I also love that I have been able to sell all over the world (Japan, China, Brazil, Slovakia, etc...)

    Hey Tori loved your video. Firstly you are funnier than Kevin but not yet as funny as Dave and Cary 🤣🤣. Now I too have had experience volunteering at an op shop in a previous life. It was a Red Cross shop and we were expected to toss dinner sets if there were any pieces missing, books even prams and even if they were new…I never did put them ‘in’ the big industrial bins. Some of us used to place them ‘next’ to the bins so at least someone could take them. Unfortunately some of the charity has gone out of the op shops. They would rather dump than give away. Anyway glad I found your channel…now subscribed.
