It's A Drama
New Zealand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 มิ.ย. 2016
This channel is about moving to New Zealand, living in New Zealand, having travel adventures eating & drinking wine (because there always has to be wine).
We are Liz and Brian. A husband & wife who emigrated with their two kids to New Zealand from the UK in 2009 & now get together at the weekends & make podcasts about New Zealand & travel and stuff.
Because let's face it. What else is there to do now the kids are teenagers, and the house is empty?
We love to talk about how to jump into an adventure- big or small & live life to the fullest.
Whatever your age. In fact, the older, the better. Keeping it real.
We're world travellers and adventurers & but most importantly, we are optimists who love living in New Zealand & our aim is to make you relax & smile! We really hope that you'll join us on this journey & subscribe!

Happy Christmas/Holidays/December ❤️🥰🎄🎄 We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being with us this year, we could not have got through everything we've faced without the support and love of our community. Thank you SO much ❤️
It's been quite a year for us.
If you have followed the podcast for a while, you will know that we have suffered two big losses. Both Liz's mum and dad passed within 6 months of each other.
And before you know it, it's Christmas time. Which is always the hardest.
Determined to celebrate Christmas in a way that we have never done before, in a country the four of us love, we have decided to leave New Zealand to spend a once-in-a-lifetime family break in...?
Dun dun duuuunnnnn....🤣

🥳📣Did you know we now have a SECRET podcast?
BEHIND THE DRAMA is a fabulous member-only podcast where Brian and I give you bonus content and take you deeper into the more personal stories about life as a married, entrepreneurial couple.
A couple who juggle travel, family, business, mental health and marriage.
A couple who have two adult kids that still live at home.
But that's okay.
Because they don't mind being slaves.
Honest.
If you are of a certain age who dreams of throwing conventional life into the air and swapping it for optimism, yes-ness, adventure, and a ton of much-needed knicker-wetting humour, then this is the podcast for you - It is real, it is honest, it is tough, and it is JUST what you need.

For number nine, about the shopping baskets, I feel like in New Zealand it's just common curtesy to take out your items so you can return the basket while they scan everything. But also whether the cashier will take your stuff out or not completely depends on the person serving you
I’m so glad I came across this video as I’m really praying they make some significant changes to the skilled migrant visa. My son and family came over 18 months ago from Uk and has taken a real hit in salary, but they love it and want to stay but crikey it’s so tough to get close to being eligible for residency. Came to fill a job that the company hadn’t been able to for 2 years, spending thousands just to set foot in the country. Earning $38 per hour, with 20 years experience in his trade, but can’t get the 1.5 median wage, which he will have to be on for 3 years and has to also gain 3 years work experience which is crazy when he already has 20 years under his belt. They are so stressed, and feel very let down. And if no pathway to residence at end of visa booted out and have to reapply to return after 12 months, even tho their kids will be at the end of their education! I’m so sorry for ranting but it’s tough to watch what they imagined to be new lives here in NZ just feel like it’s an impossible dream.
No sitting on any surface food is served from...no cats on the kitchen bench or other food surfaces...no hats on inside...

It's totally fine to put your basket on the conveyor, so long as you also immediately report yourself to the police
Those rules work in Canada too. I have been to NZ 5x but couldn't consider moving there. There is a vibe I don't associate to.
Sorry guys disagree with you on this, I know it is a lot but we had 30 staff in our restaurant but time you work out 15% and then give them a free day off it really adds up. Never heard of this till we came to NZ. Glad we are not doing it anymore
I think that house prices are normal, now days
Please do not honk in Victoria Tunnel-or any tunnel for that matter (especially tunnels with pedestrian walkways / cycleways). I've never heard of someone honking on a bridge... Could be a rural thing? Is the money thing really a thing? I mean, yeah there is no pecking order / class system, but if people want to talk about what they earn and what they pay for stuff, I reckon that's their prerogative, yeah?

Im from the UK but lived most my life in NZ. Now I'm in Mexico and I can tell you the postal service and availability in NZ is brilliant compared to Mexico so I don't think your comment about post is particularly relevant as I could get anything from anywhere when I lived there
Caucasian origin, half stammering English from the mouth and lips and not the throat: You are a 75% acceptable New Zealander. If you have hands on skills, a driver's license from mother's womb and ability to live a life of solitude: These are the other 25%.
Would love to move to NZ. It’s a beautiful country with amazing people. I just wish the immigration was a little easier.
I don’t understand how bringing older people into the country and putting our resources under constraint is a good thing. I know it was stated it would be a higher visa price but that’s shocking that this govt would do this. 😳
We have skilled workers here, we don't like immigrants taking our jobs

Well I’ll be darned. We live just down the road from Nelson. It’s a lovely little city nestled into the mountainside, parked right on the lake. You will be skiing at Whitewater. I’m sure they have a four-wheel-drive vehicle as the drive up to White Water ski hill is thoroughly entertaining. The mountain used to be owned by Nelson couple who sold it but the new owners have definitely kept the wonderful feeling of an awesome ski hill in big mountains. By the way up at the hill, the food is wonderful. The prior owner , Shelley Adams was an amazing cook. She has published a series of cookbooks that you’ve got to get when you’re there. They’re called the Whitewater cookbooks and we eat from them all the time. In fact, we just gave one to a friend for Christmas. Unfortunately, we won’t be in our little town of Rossland for Christmas, it would’ve been really great to go out for coffee or have a rip at the ski hill together. Things have happened in our family that necessitate us to be close and that is a 25 hour drive to the east. I’m sure the NELSON family will have a lovely time. I hope they get to hike Taranaki. Where you two live is so beautiful. For a big adventure they could drive the lost highway. I loved it, my honey, not so much! Have a wonderful Christmas you guys !
Oh,Mike!! I was hoping you would be home and we could meet up! We will wait until you next come to NZ and have a drink under the mountain. Thank you for all the great back story of Nelson, you’ve made us super excited! I hope your family are safe and well. We send you all a big hug and a ton of kiwi gratitude ❤ Have a happy holiday season! Liz and Brian x
I found this update funny😅
chicken salt? you philistine!!! How COULD you? Next you will be demanding MSG!!
The marees are really funny sometimes they eat with their hands and they call you cuzzie funny people alright
Hi there as a kiwi I would say all this is very accurate. The reason they want you to take the items out of the basket at the supermarket is to prevent RSI repetitive strain injuries for the staff. It strains your wrists etc if you have to keep reaching into baskets for hours on end. Also the shopping trolley returning we tend to do things that are just being respectful for others and the jobs they do. When you see someone just leaving the trolley where it is it just seems lazy😅. Also same thing with litter. People do not usually just throw rubbish on the ground. You hold on to it till you find a bin thankfully there are lots of bins around😅
U guys r gorgeous. Yr absolutely 💯 right about us kiwis. U gave me a laugh and a smile watching yr vid
i would be careful what you say is and is not a rule! not everyone is going to experience what you have in new zealand. Watching this i can not relate to any of what you mentioned, and i was born and raised here in NZ for 30 years! some people watching this might have a completely different experience to what you are mentioning, if they moved here....
Thank you very much for this video
❤you're advice..and all..❤ just back from NZ visiting my kids and grandchildren ...its an amazing awesome very peaceful beautifull country!!!!allso childfriendly....❤ I'm from SA. ... Im also a christian... Will love to keep watching and forward you're video's ...but Just humbly ask that you dont blasphemy please 😢
About the basket thing, we always have to unload it ourselves, and sometimes, we also have to bag it ourselves (some supermarkets). Beside the checkouts, there'll always be a little rack to place your basket, so you can put it there on your own, and on the self checkout, by the exit, there'll also be another rack
I arrived from UK in November on a parent visa. I was looking to live in or around Christchurch. The 'living in New Zealand for 12 months regulation' was easily overcome at cost of $2000. Decision was made within ten days. At 77, waiting another year would have been daunting, but really easily overcome, having sold in UK, a thousand pounds was well worth it. In UK estate agents seemed to do very little, but they seem much more involved with the process over in NZ.. Conversely Uk solicitors take on everything in UK but keep you in the dark in my experience. In NZ it has seemed that I have been expected to be much more involved getting the building report and LIM (Land information memorandum) Who owns the land ? Earthquake risk and history ? that sort of thing. All very different to my UK experience. I paid my deposit a couple of days ago and will move into my new home in January. I did loads of online research into house prices even before my residence visa was approved. An estimate guide price is now usually shown. I suspect the Auckland experience may be different.
Tunnels and Bridges = Rubbish! Sounds like you were suckered with that
New Zealand is not 0:20 "behind-the-times" as so impulsively misunderstood. And to judge its lingering momentum as being behind technologically, and socially is a little too hasty. It's wisdom in our minds to allow the impatient to test run all aspects of progress before we take a bit. Afterall these are man-made decisions be they material or mannerisms. We don't jump into the water without testing it's depth, content, and condition. 😂😅😊 We want to know that it's palatable for not just our friends and loved ones but our visitors also. Wisdom in full swing in NZ. 😂😅😊 Hope you all appreciate our humble view of caution.😂😅😊😂🙏🏽🎤🎼🎶🎵🎹🥁🎷🎺😎🧱
Number 6 had me cracking up,its sooooo very true. The whole list is 100% kiwi, lol.
Guangzhou Airport is large. It's pronounced Gw-on-jo (Gwonjo quickly but that's the pronunciation). The Kiwis should have at least waited for the plane to get to taxiing speed: they were clearly onto it re their connecting flight. Good that the Chinese officials were racing you everywhere, even if it required two legs to be used as opposed to wheels. That's real kind of the Chinese man too: he must have felt bad for you. The younger generation isn't necessarily as stoic as the older generations (ie 50's plus). My wife is Chinese, so I rely on her to tell me where to go in China, as I have no idea how to read the signage. They do have lots of travelators in the Chinese airports, which can increase the moving speed by 50%, but that would have been quite the sprint-hike. In general: I do find it frustrating how passengers will typically all queue up to leave as soon as the plane becomes stationery. As an 'always economy flyer' myself, who is invariably close to the back of the plane, I find it rather amusing how the majority of passengers immediately get their stuff out of the lockers, and then line up, for what will be over five minutes of waiting for the remainder of the plane to depart. It does put a bit of pressure though, especially when travelling with young children, to get all your bags sorted and ensure no children disappear, whilst not delaying the clearly rushing queue more than would be determined an unnecessary waiting time for two adults and three young children to get all their stuff out of lockers and move together. The joys of travelling!
Ohh thats too funny, we just came to NZ from Smithers, British Columbia, Canada! We do our Christmas in your country! You will love Nelson, its a beautiful small city but ranked very high in livability. Have fun from Waiheki Island.
Oh, how funny! Thank you for the reassurance, Jennifer! We can’t wait 😃 Enjoy your Christmas in the sun! ❤️🎄🇳🇿🇨🇦
We've lived in NZ for 20 years what are they talking about? Do not sit on tables is nothing to do with culture is common decency when your eating. Some factories or warehouses have friday beers most places do not rest is BS I'm afraid 😮
Oh no. I’m American. I looked at the title and IN MY HEAD I pronounced NZ as “in zed” instead of “in zee” It’s happening 😭😭😭 But I don’t mind because no matter what it takes, I am moving to NZ one day
Home My late father was born in Northland in 1893. He was an Anzac soldier in WWI. I was born in 1939 a late baby. Dad always referred to England as Home even though he was born in New Zealand and his Father was also born in New Zealand. I referred to New Zealand as home when growing up. At 20 I moved to Australia, Got married and moved to Canada in 1974. In 1988 my wife who was American was offered a very good job in the USA. So we moved in 2007 getting ready to retire we started talking;k about where to retire to. We both said the USA was out. Then at the dinner table the wife said I want to go Home, ok where, Canada of course that’s home and I realized she was right. Whenever I thought of where we had been most happy it always came out Canada. I’m now widowed but living happily in Canada. I have my wife’s ashes with instructions that we are both to be sprinkled at our favourite place in our home country Canada.
Sitting on my deck watching this. Open it and go, oh wow we're looking at the same mountain 😂
I have seen a Banana tree on the street I used to live on. Here in Tauranga.
Sorry, I had to keep skipping ahead because it got drawn out too much. But, as I understand it, this is like that movie The Holiday? As a Kiwi who has traveled the world but never experienced a white Christmas, this is inspiring.
You are right on with the terrible drivers who speed up at passing lanes. Unfortunately it is common here, but it really is just bad driving!
"Raised eyebrows". It could be worth cultivating. It would have to be quick because the meaning down below Dunedin anyway, raised eyebrows is body language for " I don't believe you but OK I will go along".
Interesting. Here in New Zealand, I have never heard what Americans swear "all" the time: Mother F****r. On the other hand, when we were staying with cousins in the US they warned us not to say "dam". A word we use as a euphemism for an expletive. Culture, culture. At the bottom of the south island here, if a male stranger comes into your proximity we say g'day, a female, hello or a nod saying hi.
As a New Zealander I am at a loss as to where these two Brits are getting info on these so called rules. Most of what they are saying is absolute rubbish. Overall Kiwi's are easy going and friendly. I do have to wonder who these people were hanging out with; and instead of making a video complaining about individuals, while drawing conclusions without challenge is sad. Please stay here and educate yourself about our sarcastic and humorous culture. I think these Brits are talking about individual experiences which is not representative of the nation as a whole. I have stopped this video way too many times to edit this comment; but seriously guys the things they are saying here are their individual experiences & so sad that they think that this is true.
Only just touched base and thought you were relocating, All the best on your Christmas vacation. You've had a life changing year, hard to know what to say to you. All the best. Jingle bells Arohanui.
