Grumman Canoe History | Mayhem on the Mississagi | Part 2
In this video, I share the story of how our adventure led us to rely on our trusty Grumman canoe, and along the way, we had some unexpected encounters and challenges. As we wrap up Day 1 on the Mississagi River, where the water is mostly flat, I take a moment to pay tribute to this old friend. It’s not the prettiest, lightest, or fastest canoe, but out here on the Mississagi, it just might be the best.
We begin this episode by launching from the beach where we stopped for lunch. With few rapids or swifts to navigate on this leg of the journey, I have time to reflect on the fascinating history of the Grumman canoe. Before it ever touched water, its creators were focused on the skies. During World War II, the Grumman Aviation Corporation, renowned for aircraft like the Wildcat, Hellcat, and Avenger, dominated the skies over the Pacific. Their planes were as adept on water as they were in the air, with the Grumman Goose being a prime example, still coveted by island hopper airlines worldwide. Over time, their fighter jets, like the F-14 Tomcat from Top Gun, became iconic. Grumman also made a name in the private jet market with their Gulfstream aircraft, and today, Northrop Grumman plays a key role in space exploration.
But back in 1944, as World War II was winding down and demand for planes decreased, Grumman began using aircraft aluminum to craft canoes. These canoes were sturdier, lighter, and stronger than their wooden counterparts, quickly becoming a favourite among recreational paddlers, including the iconic Bill Mason. While Mason wasn’t fond of their aesthetics or the noise they made, he still chose a Grumman, nicknamed the Queen Mary, for family trips on the French River, Georgian Bay, and Lake Superior.
Yes, Grumman canoes can be noisy, lack sleek lines, and even leave a trace of aluminum oxide on your skin, clothes, and paddles. But they are dependable, rugged, and unpretentious-qualities that made it the perfect vessel for our journey on the Mississagi, as we discovered later in the day. The kayaks and our Grumman acquired a few new battle scars, but we all made it to the campsite safely. We’ll wrap up our trip in next week’s episode. Until then, thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed the video.

Mickey looks like he did pretty well! This looks like so much fun and even a bit intimidating. We did a rafting ride up in Glacier National Park a few years ago, but it wasn't a white water rafting ride, which we were happy about. It was mostly smooth. 😂 Looks like Mrs. North knows what she's doing! ❤ Fun trip! 😊 Thanks for sharing! Love the lunch spot on the beach. On to part 2! 🙂

Great video of the second leg especially the bald eagle and the history of Grumman and how it became a canoe builder. Besides all the downsides you mentioned, it also sticks to rocks, which can be dangerous when running rapids, so I'm guessing that's one of the reasons for lining the 'boney' rapids you described. Glad everyone made it safely through and I hope you has a hearty dinner.. Love potatoes baked in a fire!!! looking forward to the next episode.

Thanks! Yeah, the water just got too shallow in the evening to run anything, really. Unfortunately, this was a long set and we ended up lining most of it. The canoe was pretty heavy with gear too which didn't help. But we made it and the campsite was wonderful.

Yes you are! Thanks Janson. I'm hoping to get out to the Fox Islands next week, so if you have any recommendations on campsites or other things, I'd be delighted to hear them. Thanks again.

@flynorthproductions hahah I just did some maintenance on my kayak and added some gel coat to places that scratched down to the fiberglass layer. A lot of it is now etched onto rocks in Georgian Bay, more unfortunate for the environment than my boat

An awesome family paddle. Those falls are stunning. A lot of "firsts" fpr you and your kids. Good thing the Mrs. Was there to be the veteran. That was sure a nice spot to paddle. Bummer about the foggy camera. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to what awaits down river!

Hi Daryl and family - fun to see you all out together on the Mississagi River! Good thing your wife has experience and can lead the way! Mickey was sure brave and trusting to join you on your adventure. Beautiful section, moving pretty fast- I’m assuming it was a one day trip or you’d need a fair amount of gear! I’ll have to wait for the next episode- 👌😄 Cheers, Jen

Yes, Mickey was a trooper - he didn't seem nervous at all. It was a two day trip with an overnight camp, we were pretty heavy with gear. Thanks Jen.

Excited to see you and the whole family paddling this section of the river! As you say, the best time to paddle any section of a river would be May/June - but even summer flows in the middle of the day on this river are typically enough to make a good portion of the rapids runnable. We have an idea of the sections where you may have "bottomed out" on...we'll wait for the next episode!

Hi. Yes, we hit a really shallow section a ways down. I knew the daily Aubrey Falls dam closing would possibly be an issue but I didn't think the water would drop so suddenly! Thanks for showing us the way with your video and it was nice for my wife to revisit a river she paddled many times with the junior rangers. Cheers. Daryl

Did I hear a bleep, Lol .. What an exciting and beautiful trip... So much fun, much better than any amusement park... These are the kind of trips that we dream about.. Family, nature, excitement and discovery... Great fun Daryl... Happy Wednesday, Jim 😊✌️

Hi Jim, you're right, the best ride ever, amusement park rides can't compete. I think it's because the outcome is unpredictable when I'm paddling, I never know where I'll end up. 😀 Thanks for coming along, looking forward to your next one. Cheers. Daryl

That sure was a rewarding and fun Adventure Daryl... There's something very special about doing a solo trip like that... The area of course is spectacular and your organizational skills are to be admired... Great idea with the bags... Thanks for another uplifting, positive and fun video... 😊✌️

The solo trip is a unique type of adventure, as you know. Avoiding missteps is critical, there's no one around to help you out if you get hurt. But, there's nothing quite like setting your own agenda for the day. Beautiful. Thanks as always for visiting. Take care, Jim.

Nice video of that section of the Mississagi River!! I was surprised that you were running fast water in what appears to be a small sea kayak!! Good work out there.. Coming close to rocks is always a scary proposition but especially in faster water!! Mickey did very well considering he's not a 'water' dog!! Nice to have an experienced paddler like 'Mrs. Fly North' taking the lead and giving the two kayakers the best line to follow. You and your kids did very well paddling on fast water for the first time. Great draw strokes Ali!! Looking forward to the 2nd video!!!

Thanks. Luckily the water was shallow and there were no dangerous rapids, mostly just swifts. Yes, Mrs. Fly North is a pro and taught her daughter well throughout the journey. I'm mostly proud of Mickey though! 😅

What a fun stretch of moving water. That beach looked like a terrific spot for lunch as well... Although I have paddled the upper Mississagi, I have not paddled this section beneath the falls. Looks like I might have to add it to the list! Standing by for part 2... Hopefully the later stretches will be less bony. Cheers! T.

Thanks Trevor. I think this river would be a lot of fun in June. Also, I read somewhere the Aubrey Falls dam gates close around 5pm every day basically shutting off the flow to the lower section and that seemed to coincide with our bottoming out experiences later in the day. That said, this is probably the most fun stretch of river I've ever paddled.

I still remember the time a friend of mine with two small kids in the middle were paddling some rapids in Keji...well, it didn't go so well as one of kids in the middle of the rapids got a little scared and decided to stand up! Over we all went...gear and everything! We were fortunate that the water was only knee deep and walked our way to shore. When ever my friend and I see one another we still remember that time...especially everything being pretty wet for the first couple days of a 4-day canoe around the park. Looks like you sure did spend some pretty great quality time together! Looking forward to Part 2!

Thanks Bruce - that's a great story, thank you for sharing that. We certainly had some difficulties later on but thankfully, no flipping. That said, the younger members of our party did end up with wet clothes too. 😀
