  • Come along with me as I explore the charming town of Arnprior, Ontario, and its hidden treasure: Gillies Grove. This is not your ordinary forest walk. I’m on a quest to find the tallest tree in Ontario, and I’m not leaving without a hug!
Arnprior is a quaint community along the Ottawa River, only an hour away from Ottawa, the nation’s capital. But its real attraction lies in Gillies Grove, a historic site that preserves a rare old growth forest.
Gillies Grove was once part of a large estate owned by the McLachlin family, who were wealthy lumber merchants in the 19th century. They spared this grove from logging, and later sold it to their rival, David Gillies. Eventually, the grove was taken over by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, who protects it to this day.
As I walk through the forest, I encounter some friendly woodpeckers, a beautiful view of the river, and a mysterious book on a bench. The book turns out to be someone’s journal, but it doesn’t help me find the tree I’m looking for. Luckily, a local resident passes by and points me to the right direction.
And there it is: the tallest tree in Ontario. It’s a majestic white pine that stands at 47 meters (154 feet) high. I can’t resist giving it a big hug and thanking it for its existence. I feel a connection with this ancient being that has witnessed so much history.
I head back to the gate, feeling happy and fulfilled. I take in the beauty of the forest and appreciate the efforts of those who preserved it. I know that for some people, these trees may not seem impressive, but for me, they are a precious gift. I wish there were more forests like this in Ontario, and I hope they will last for generations to come.
Thanks for joining me on this amazing adventure. I hope you enjoyed the video and learned something new. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more!
