Winter Prep. Structural Pruning of Multiple Trees. 14-Nov-2024
มุมมอง 1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
There are few tasks in Bonsai that are more important than getting your trees ready for winter. Often that means structural pruning for future growth, so that the tree will hopefully cooperate and branch out where you hope it will. Key word; HOPEFULLY!

This task seems never ending, but I’m making progress. BAre trees are easy to look at (and incidentally, my favorite way to do so) and prune for structure. That’s what I do today.

How’s the Central Park group doing?
What a lovely tour and exciting collection😃 Thanks for sharing😊
Thank you for watching
So many trees and projects to come, awesome!!
The plans keep me awake at night. There will always be a tree to work on. Thanks Nigel
May spring be there soon! 😊
We’re just starting to get our coldest weather yet. Can’t wait for spring
Cool steve! I'd never be able to leave my trees on the ground, I'd no longer have any trees! Something for sure would eat them or destroy them 😮
I keep a sharp eye open for critters. Hasn’t been a major problem yet. There are good suggestions from viewers. Good luck with your winter survival.
Outdoor tour, you really have a wide collection for yourself. I cover all mine with leaves and try to put the pots soil level in the winter egg crates. That way in the winter months with this bitter cold we have they stay content. Lots of work for you. Stay warm.
Mine are on 3” of pea gravel on the ground. The soft maple leaves are collecting on them so a blanket is forming. So far so good. This is the 3rd winter I have stored my trees this way. The landscapes always need maintenance in spring anyway.
Moss looks great for you. Cool updates in your greenhouse. A great seed farm. You have the light for it. Too cold here for rain.18F/-8C here in the windy city at 7:30am
Plenty of light in the greenhouse. Yes, the moss is really staying alive.
What's your technique for keeping critters away from the tree's??
Everything looks tucked away and cozy Steve. Just a thought if mice are an issue. I put three foot sections of pvc with poison blocks stuffed in the middle (to keep dry) in mt winter beds. Haven’t had one issue yet 🤞🏻
That’s a good idea, but to be honest, if I harmed an unintended creature in the process, I would feel terrible. The little digging I noted in my ginkgo was most likely a 🐿️ squirrel.
Thanks for the tour of your garden. Always welcoming.
Thanks for stopping by Jeanette. Cheers
Then line the edges with critter traps, so no one else touches your Ginkos! 😬 They look tucked in tight for the winter. 🍻until next year
It was most likely a squirrel 🐿️. Billy, call me what you will, but if I accidentally offed a chipmunk, I would be so sad. 😞 Thanks Mr. Yeti. 👣
@ oh I wouldn’t call you names, Steve! Personally I do not think twice about killin critters. But I rarely have too. They stay in the woods around here, for the most part. Only real critter to worry about for me is Moose, but I’m not allowed to kill them
Genius idea with the benches doubling as a wind break for your overwintering trees.
Thanks, it has been good so far.
Looks great Steve. Just today I got most of my guys down on the ground behind wind breaks. Just a few more to go into their winter home. See you soon
This arrangement allows me to easily check on them. The problem will come when I run out of space.
That's a lot of cool material. Good show, Steve!
Thanks Patricia

@n8tyler You got me stumped here 🤔 Thanks For Stuff? The First Second? That’s For Sure?
Oh! It hit me, seconds after hitting send. “Thanks For Sharing” 🤘🏼
YQW…
I put two together about three years ago but only really at the base. I think it’s slowly fused. I’ll do an update and check it out.
I’m told hell will freeze over before they actually fuse, so I’m just going to try to make them happy close neighbors.
Don’t understand why Nigel or anyone uses rubber cement. I think you can use wood glue. It’s more natural and works also. 🙃
Actually, rubber cement makes good sense to me. Plus, the solvent is antiseptic and quickly dissipates. I’ve used a few different products as cut paste, including wood glue. I’m searching for the best solution for me. So far, this beats all. The search will continue.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai ooh nice! Good to know! At first glance it seems like a strange idea. 😅 I always question Nigel’s use, like a pure spectator 🤣
I agree with your thought process here. Good luck with this one! I’m sure it’ll pull through.
Thanks Dave. Its future is as bright as I let it be!
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Well it is in good hands with you!
Great video Steve 👊👊👊👊
I’m happy to have you out there Andy.
Fusion will take for you. Just give it time and spring will amaze you. Stay warm. 18F/-8C here in the windy city. Hope it is better out your way, Steve.
I’m going to let them live like happy, close neighbors. I do hope the roots merge, but I honestly think the trunks will not. Thanks Tom.
These Ports should survive for you. My jades only have light from the basement windows and nothing else. They are growing nicely. I just have to watch not to over water them since the coolness in the basement does not let them dry out fast.
Mine are in an upstairs south window, so I need to water every 3 days.
I tried an experiment last winter...half my PA'S were in the basement under LED grow lights with 50-60 degree temps..The other half were in the warmth of the house under similar lighting....The PA'S in the basement went essentially dormant and barely grew...the ones in the house still grew.....Amazingly, my crassula jades loved being in the basement and grew like weeds....
I have heard others say the crassulas love a cool down period. Thanks for the comments.
Would suggest using raffia or some natural fiber to tie the trunks together. Chances of bite marks are much less. If you scrape the bark off lightly, expose the cambium and then allow the cambiums of the individual trunks to be in contact before tying them together, the fusion is smoother.
I bet that would work. Maybe if the branching develops how I want it to, I could attempt the fusion again. Thanks Deep.
Lots of light and keep them warm and they'll recover and grow....
That’s the plan. Thanks
Spider mites hate methylated spirits, really works well Steve... good job too
In what form do you get it? Like Vicks Vaporub? Thanks Nerina.
@ l just realised its called Denatured alcohol in USA sorry about that. I use 1 litre of water 20 ml dishwashing liquid & 20ml Denatured alcohol...l sometimes use a cotton swab straight in the alcohol for woolly aphids.Isopropyl is good as well
@ Thanks for clarifying. Cheers

They are quite forgiving if you cut then say ow I shouldn’t have done that they tend to shoot close by. 👍🇦🇺🦘
Any reasonable result at this point would be quite satisfying. Thanks Bryan
Foist! Looking good all nestled together. The roots will at least intertwine and give you a solid base. My 2¢ anyways.
Was thinking if (a) those roots do entangle nicely, and (b) the branching happens advantageously, I might try to fuse the trunks by roughing up the bark where they intersect, and then binding them again. A viewer suggested that method and it seems plausible. Couldn’t hurt to try, but only if the other conditions are met.
Good work Steve 👏
Thanks Chris
After doing jade directional pruning. Where you've left 2 leaves, cut 2/3rds off of the leaf on the side that you don't want growth....it doesn't always get you growth in the preferred direction, but regularly helps convince the plant to grow where there's a leaf...
I have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip!
Nice steve! My neighbor gave me a giant jade plant, it's about 3 inches thick .i hope to repot it in the spring but i have to find a good pot for it. It's got roots starting to grow right on the branches! Those tiny ones would be great in a thimble pot.
I thought about a thimble pot, but I would get frustrated trying to keep the jades that small. Thanks Andrew.
Nice chops on the jades for the future...❤✂️👍
Gotta do it. I always tink my jades are about to fall over from their own weight. Thanks for watching.
Nice chops on the jades! I’m diggin it.
Thanks Billy. Ready for the next push of growth.
Cool forest Steve !!
Thank you Nerina
Thanks for sharing...
You’re welcome Nate.
After all that pruning, this will become a cool forest come spring.
We’ll look at it again in summer and see how it developed. Thanks Tom.

Thank you Dave. Happy Thanksgiving
Brave cuts today. I was hoping you would do that big cut near the end … I even talked to my phone saying “do it!” Lol 😅 That was a great choice that I think will pay off in the future. Looking forward to seeing what this looks like in the spring!
I hope spring brings the growth I want to see. Nigel said it could take until mid summer to re-foliate. I guess we’ll see. Thanks for sticking by me!
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai I'm sure it will be worth the wait!

Glad this tree is in great hands 😁. It will turn into a great tree
So you were ok with the direction I’m taking it? That’s great to hear.
Great job Steve You really have that structure sorted out and set up nicely for the future. Thanks, keep growing
Thanks Matt. I hope it thrives
Awesomeness. My willow leaf ficus self defoliates every fall. It's bare from late December until early March when it leafs out again..
Does it happen when you bring it indoors?
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai yep, about a month after bringing it indoors, it'll start dropping leaves. It resides in front of an East window and gets 12 hours of LED grow lighting.. it'll be just a few leaves to start with and then complete self defoliation within a few weeks. It has nothing through January and February, and then I start to see new buds in March.
