I've gotten other plants like succulents at aldi, never would have imagined they'd have olive trees! There's tons of aldi stores around here i hope to find an olive tree, you and Tom got some great trees!
Nice slip pot Steve. I should have waited to slip pot mine until your video. I slip potted mine yesterday, but now I think I should gently take it back out and tease the roots a bit. I left it encircling roots and all. I forgot to tell Dave about those trees.
I don’t think it would hurt any to exhume it and tease out the root ends. Also scrape away a bit on the surface to expose some trunk if possible. Thanks again for letting me know about them.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai I did mean to 'exhume' today, but I was able to sneak away from this crazy house, and somehow, I spent 3 hours at my favorite nursery. I will re-slip pot it tomorrow.
I was doing the same as you. My root system was just like your tree. The mix you chose is a great mix. The soil mine came in had some bark in it also. I did not use the old soil also. Stuck a cutting in it though to see if it roots in it.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai My cuttings I let sit in water for 24 hours and stuck them this evening in vermiculite. I have stuck others and I think 2 are still green. I will show it on the next video with the mums I stuck.
I saw miles and miles of olive trees for the first time ever in Spain a few years back. I just kept imagining how many jars they would fill. Very cool tree.
Root work and a repot in spring. I tried a winter repot only to have the tree fail on me. I think it would be a safer bet for spring for you. I put mine in a pot with a bit of root teasing to let it grow also.
Fall (late summer) repot makes more sense now that I think about it. If I hard prune in spring, it will have time to recover before I do any major root work in fall. I might even put it in a pond basket if the roots need more time to develop.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai The 4 foot one I bought from Ted's in the spring of 2023 is doing well and I am letting it grow to develop the roots more. That one I took cuttings but no rooting hormone. I think 2 made it with the mum cuttings. I have to show in next video so you can see the easy plug removal container.
Well Steve I have now watched and "liked" all 254 episodes...It has been great getting to know you a little and admiring your wonderful collection...I have learned quite a lot and expect that your videos will continue to serve me on my Bonsai journey...You and Nile's are cut from the same mold...Always upbeat, information and a true pleasure to spend time watching...Really looking forward to your future video's and continuing to expand my "budding" interest in Horticulture and Bonsai...Also eagerly awaiting updates on those White Pine seedlings and your experiments with moss...Thanks for sharing your knowledge and making Bonsai seem more attainable for a rookie like me...Sequim, WA...
I appreciate your viewership Nate. Help spread the word. If you belong to a Bonsai club, please let the others know about the channel. I commit to always providing good and interesting content, presented in an easy-to-digest manner. From Long Island, NY, to Sequim, and everything in between. BTW, coming soon on @DavesBonsai, his visit to Steve’s Backyard.
I’ll be styling mine in spring if it survives winter in my greenhouse. It says it can take temps to 10 degrees F. I keep the greenhouse just above freezing at night.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Mine, I bring in the basement for their dormant period. I did that with the Olive from Ted's and it did just nicely from whatever light came in from the west window.
Good lookin tree! Lookin forward to where you take this one. I pretty much reversed seasoned mine. Goes dormant outside in the summer, puts on most of her growth in the grow tent during the winter. It’ll probably thrive in your climate
I really dig the Dirt Nerd shirt! I’ll need to track down one of those for myself. 😆 I had no idea Aldi had olive trees … I’ll have to run over to one near my neck of the woods in the next day or so to snag one myself.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Haha its the longtime friends that know us best right? 😄 When I pick up the Aldi tree I'll make sure to make a video on it. 👍👍
Lovely tree! I checked out the olive trees at my local Aldi, but every one I touched dropped all its leaves. It wasn't worth the gamble. Yours looks just fine.

Had it not been for a viewer alerting me, I wouldn’t have known either. Cheers
Nice olive tree😊
My one and only. Got any olive tips?
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai loads of sun and fertilise in spring and summer, good luck
Matt does make a fantastic root hook and the root hook combo.
It’s very nice to use. I like a heavy tool.
Nice repotting, Steve. The olive will make a nice tree for you.
I think so too. Thanks Tom.
That’s me, or should I say, “that’s us”? Easy is good. What’s another mouth to feed anyway.

I’ve been told Olives root easily from cuttings. I’ll be watching to see how your does.

The Aldi special. Olive. Super cool!!! I could not believe that they were selling them. I think we hit the nail on the head in purchasing them.

Foist!
What kind of olives will that grow?
Don’t know. I’m not growing it for the olives, but if it bears fruit, I’ll feature it on my channel!

I got lucky. There were 25 nice trees and I picked through all of them. There was one suffering leaf loss. Thanks Susan
Excellent. I’ve been looking for an olive tree myself. Thought here in Australia more local garden centres would have some but no luck yet. 👍🇦🇺🦘
You would think they’d be easy to find. I hear they grow easily from cuttings. I may have to try that.
