Fishing for Giant Skate in Scotland - Biggest Fish species I’ve ever caught?! - Sea Fishing UK
Ok so this video I have here is like no other video I have ever made, the experience of this fishing trip was like nothing I’ve encountered before, so re-living it while editing was fantastic.
I could only describe it as Amazing, awesome, exhilarating and any other words you can think of, these magnificent animals really are spectacular and it was truly amazing fishing.
I won’t lie by saying this type of fishing is my normal type of fishing and my back, arms, shoulders or any part of my body thanks me as each day passes but this will not be the last time I get involved with a Skate I’m sure.
I was scared at first but decided to take the rains for the second fish pulled up and after lots of help and encouragement managed to land by far my biggest fish ever, not to mention the most magnificent specimen species I’ve witnessed fresh out of its natural habitat of 450 foot in the deep sea.
The party I was invited to join was my friend Marks party with his sons and his brother along side Leigh the Skipper of the Skate fishing boat “ Laura Dawn 2 “ as well.
Sadly my dad could not be part of this video as he couldn’t come along for health reasons.
Sea fishing in the UK this winter has been hard work. The weather and sea conditions have been extreme. The weather has been very wet and so for us to be able get this sunny weather day boat fishing, we were very lucky.
We battled these beasts after recent snow storms and freezing temperatures far north in Scotland fishing for these elusive Giant Skate.
Did you know they are Largest Skate species in Europe?
The skipper provided the rigs and tactics and I show you these incredible sea creatures from the deep after each person aboard catches their biggest fish in their lives.
As ever but more so than ever before we enjoyed making the video so we do hope you enjoy watching it.
Do ask us any questions you like via comment or email.
We hope you can get out fishing & I hope you have some fantastic, safe fun, Finding Fish too.
No link to a website but Leigh Taylor is the Skipper of the boat Laura Dawn 2 and his number is:
Laura Dawn II (07721 640024) Leigh. We highly recommend him but obviously other boats are available.
The hotel I stayed in was the Great Western Hotel obviously prices vary at different times so do check but is very good value in winter or out of season, I went at the beginning of March.

      Hi thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video, I will try to make a video in future of how we bait up the traps, but I keep it as simple as possible and just throw any scrap fish and heads into the open end of the trap so it lies in the middle, better practice is to suspend the bait mid trap so not to have your catch slice at the mesh but my traps are old now so I’m not too fussed about that. They were purchased from EBay many years ago so can’t give you a link but by searching most general online retailers like Amazon or eBay for a fairly good quality crab trap you should have similar success. Hope that helps and all the best. 👍🎣

      Thanks for the cool comment, was April in the video so was slightly early for Mackerel although saying that with the climate fluctuations and more research it is possible areas of our coast can hold on to traditionally migratory fish all year round but I’m far from expert in such matters so as a rule seemed early as maccy are considered a summer species. Glad you liked the video all the best to you and tight lines. 🎣👍

      Thanks for the comment pal, it’s been an odd year, we have been fishing and filmed videos but I simply haven’t had time to edit and post, I sadly made a rod for my own back with how I edit and create screen location information etc on videos so my editing does take a while on top of this as I’m self employed it’s been on the more difficult side to get anything done with the channel as I have been very busy. The times I’ve had off I’ve tried to just fish and recharge rather than make a video each time. My dad is in much better heath recently after an operation that seems to have been successful so along with new ideas where to take the channel including a new boat, new venues and some optimism for weather and time we do plan on some cool content to come. We wholeheartedly appreciate all our subscribers including your good self and makes me feel very guilty I haven’t posted more but hope you can bare with us and we will be back hopefully with some exciting new videos or at the very least as our regular content for you. Thanks again for getting in touch. All the best Tim & Dave 🎣👍🫡

    brought back memories, I can only describe the feeling as like trying to bring up a superking size mattress from 100 foot down on the seabed, eventually after a lot of backbreaking pumping and getting it to the surface only for it to turn into a powered mattress and take a dive back down so you can do it all over again, great memories of the Scotland trips for skate around Mull and the trolling for big pollock , haddock out of Kylesku and porbeagle out of Scrabster absolutely wonderful fishing in a beautiful part of the world, welcome to the 100 lb plus club and well done for another great video

      Thanks Tim yes had some great fishing up there years ago and also some great trips to a lot of the marks you've visited, love the very informative videos you produce so keep them coming, I'll health has put a dampener on my fishing adventures in recent years I have mobility issues now so favourite marks like Tye Croes are just too much for me to lug gear to but regardless I'm determined to get some fishing in, have been scoping easy marks to get to which unfortunately arnt always the best marks but hey as you will understand it's just lovely being out there, in fact been planning a trip to Cemlyn bay (beach right next to car park) for a while and tonights the night as long as weather holds out, anglers don't rate it much but I will enjoy the solitude if I'm the only crazy one out there later and there's always the chance of a doggy to save the blank. Anyways I've droned on long enough so just to say thanks for sharing your adventures on your channel, one of the best for information to newbies and seasoned anglers alike, keep up the good work mate and tight lines 👍

      @user-hs7vx1zq3c ….thanks for that super cool comment again, yeah lots of our marks are now easy venues due to my dads health issues, I try to go to the tricker marks with my pal mark or sometimes on my own but prefer a pal at rock marks my mate Mark coincidentally loves Cemlyn and had many nice fish out of there including bass so can be a good place to fish so good luck. By all means update me on here with results if you wish. Tight lines pal. 🎣

      @PaulBennett-b4n 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FindingFishUK Thanks Tim, well I left the final decision to the weather reports, forecast said a little drizzle at Cemlyn about 9.30 for half hour or so then the virtual time map showed clear sky's for the rest of the night and we can all handle a bit of drizzle right! so I loaded the gear into the car, bout 10 trips from my apartment to car lol and set off for the 2 hour journey to Cemlyn. got there about an hour later than planned so missed the chance on the lure rods at dusk and went straight to setting up the bait rods. 4/0 pennel with a larger cocktail hoping for a huss or maybe a ray or even a bass, on the other rod a simple 2 hook flapper with smaller cocktail baits, didnt have to wait long in fact as I settled the flapper rod on the tripod I was straight in with the obligatory doggie, re-baited and lobbed back out and again as I settled the rod on the tripod it was off again but also getting a bite on the pennel at same time, I tried my best to handle 2 rods on a doggie fest but it was just too much, even that weed covered shingle is hard terrain to move about on so I continued with just the pennel rod. Now like most anglers I welcome a doggie to save the blank but after i'd lost count of the number I really was hoping for something else. unfortunately the weather forecast got it wrong and when the rain came it was more than a bit of drizzle it was proper rain and apart from the odd 10-15 minute break it continued through the night. When high water was about half an hour away and I was soaked through, I had donned an old flotation suit from the Scotland boat trip days to keep me warm but the constant rain eventually got through and I ended up wet and uncomfortable, everything was getting soaked and I made a decision to pack in, I was going have a cuppa and a snooze in the car and wait till dawn to have a go on the lure rod but to be honest once I'd dried out and looked at some dark clouds lurking above the bay I could just make out as dawn was about to break I thought do I really want to get back into wet gear and most likely take another soaking! so I called time on the session and vowed to try the new lure rod id bought on another day. So top and bottom is i've tested my abilities and limitations and will gear up accordingly for future trips, one rod only, easy fishing from the car, maybe concentrate on the lures instead of bottom fishing or even get some more experience on the fly scene which ive done very little of. All and all I still enjoyed getting out again and that beach on your own through the night is something else, very spooky ha ha, with the light flashes I could just see over the headland to my left which I presume was south stack it was like a scene from a horror movie. The feeling.of solitude and calmness was amazing "if you know you know". anyway Tim thanks for the invite to come back and comment on my adventure and keep your great videos coming I like a lot of others really enjoy them, tight lines 👍

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @user-hs7vx1zq3c thanks for the write up…yeah that beach is a nice wild one with no one around and the lights are like the start of an alien invasion movie sometimes lol …glad you managed to get out and wet a line, considering you found the fish is always a bonus, I understand the doggie thing and the island can be a wash with the little critters at times not letting you get a chance of catching anything else but when it’s like that, I like to see what’s the largest I can catch and keep for rock and chips… doggies can be mighty tasty fresh deep fried with chips 😋 all the best for your future sessions and by all means any cracking sessions you’d like us to know about do get in touch. Tight lines pal. 🎣👍

    You dont really need to strike into any fish tbh if you just lift and reel into the fish i bet your hook up rate goes up but thats just my opinion from watching some very good fishermen 😉

    What mono line do you recommend for fishing otterspool prom

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi thanks for the comment, I am unable to give any sound advice sadly on mono as me and my dad don’t tend to use it much these days as we use braid on all our reels. We found at snaggy areas like Otterspool mono would snap much much more than braid. I understand there is a huge debate whether mono or braid is best for sea fishing and for lots of different reasons but we find braid works best for us. (We use fixed spool reels) In all honesty I’ve hardly ever lost huge amounts of line using braid and tends to snap at the rig mostly, and for us mono was the opposite with lots of line lost when stuck in snags. Do try to get some advice from elsewhere too as like I say we are not very clued up on mono qualities or best breaking strains. Put simply if you have to use mono go as big as you can without affecting your reels ability to cast well (again sorry it’s simple advice but it’s the best I’ve got) hope you manage to find some fish pal and all the very best. From Tim & Dave. 🎣👍

      Thanks for the watch & comment Dave, I do eat Velvet Swimming Crab and cook them very simple in salted boiling water, I pick them and usually have them in a salad BUT I have a confession to make 🫣 knowing I didn’t have the time to pick them, I decided to give them another shot at getting bigger and they went back (alive obviously not to worry) Unfortunate for you guys but lucky for the crab I suppose. Knowing you’d like to see a vid I will cook the next crab haul. All the best and thanks again for getting in touch. 🎣👍

    I'll have to try drop shotting. I usually just spin without much success. Is that a real worm your using or an artificial one ?? Or should I say can you use artificial ones ?

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m lucky to have a mainly course tackle shop close to me so I grab a pot of small worms before I go fresh water fishing anywhere, it does make perch fishing very easy and so yes is a real worm. BUT absolutely you can catch perch on artificial baits and lures. Just as an example I catch my trout mainly on wet and dry flies and commonly catch perch while Trout fishing too with the fly. Considering technically fly’s are classed as an artificial bait or a lure you can obviously catch perch on all manner of artificial baits including artificial worm. Hope that helps thanks for the comment and all the best. 🎣👍

    I have lived in Wallasey for over 70 years and as a kid I used to fish the whole stretch of the prom from the Town Hall to the former Coastguard Station at Harrison Drive.....now run by RNLI beach patrol.Over the years the sandbanks have changed dramatically due to the many changes to the sea defence structures.Back in the early 60's we would catch mainly dabs,a few flounders,small cod and whiting.Catching a plaice was a rarity and a bass was a sensation.....as was a weaver fish!I am astonished to see what sea anglers are pulling out of the Mersey nowadays.I had heard that rays were prolific at low water adjacent to Fort Perch Rock but 2 years ago I was amazed when cycling past Bubbles World of Play at night to see a bloke pull a thornback over the sea wall.But topping it all is a video of blokes fishing by the Town Hall catching sizeable smooth hounds and doggies.But these anglers are much more imaginative in their choice of baits than we used to be.We only used lug and ragworm ......the rag was dug locally from the beds off the new prom long since covered by sand.I recall I used a 12 foot hollow glass beachcaster and a Penn Surfmaster reel.Happy days!

      Thanks for the comment pal, so much to love about current sea fishing, the river these days is much improved from the fishing of yesteryear and yes so many baits available now but while the rivers fishing has improved overall sadly across the country fish stocks have declined for so many different reasons. This all goes to show how important it is to savour the fishing of this fantastic area that is the Mersey and surrounding estuary area. All the best and thanks for getting in touch. Tim & Dave. 🎣👍

    • @BrasherFox
      @BrasherFox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As you will no doubt agree, the Mersey was nothing short of being a sewer way back when but vastly improved when the waterways up stream improved. I do hope we are not heading back that way.

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really refuse to go looking into the sewage discharge information more than is given to us in the media I’ll be honest, not because I wish to be ignorant but more as it will no doubt REALLY frustrate me to the point of anger, especially considering the profiteering I hear about with it all. So let’s just stay on the side of hope and say the future is hopefully not going to the same as before or gosh forbid worse. As ever unless a mass protest in the tens of millions happens us citizens are at the will of the companies and the the people in power, let’s just again “hope” there is a clear distinction between the people in power and the companies this involves as we are surely a democracy arnt we ? (Way more political than I normally get but must have caught me on a rainy day 🫣😉) all the best regardless pal. Tim.🤞🎣🤷

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and the comment, dad is slowly on the mend thanks. We find fishing the tide up at Otterspool promenade best but depending on the size of the tide and part of Otterspool you fish it can be different..but generally half way up is a good time to start to fish. A good general rule of thumb is most promenade venues on the Mersey are best fished half way up tide until perhaps 1-2 hrs after. Be aware even a small tide on the Mersey will see you struggle to hold bottom when the tide is on its way back out. There is no substitute for having a go, you can get a real feel for an area simply by fishing it cautiously and seeing what works. Hope this helps. Thanks again and all the best. Tightlines, Tim and Dave. 🐟🎣👍

      Thanks for watching and commenting its much appreciated, I am far from an expert on exact fish species details I simply research to find the best accurate info on the Web I USED THIS AS MY SOURCE: ***The Gadidae are a family of marine fish, included in the order Gadiformes, known as the cods, codfishes, or true cods.[2] It contains several commercially important fishes, including the cod, haddock, whiting, and pollock.*** If that is incorrect I apologise and I encourage People to research for themselves too to find out more or find their own info. I agree, it's very tasty and in great abundance. Can I ask how you skinned them? I usually leave the skin on for cooking as the small scales aren't really an issue.

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching glad you agree, as for skinning, I skin them exactly the same way you would any fish just a little more delicate, basically once filleted, skin side down to your chopping surface start at the tail end cut into the flesh slightly in from the tail through the meat towards the skin beneath, stopping just before you hit the skin, then using a slight sawing action but hardly moving the knife at all grip the skin and pull towards you all the while with a sawing action with the knife but not really cutting just letting the flesh and skin hit the blade as you effectively pull the skin off from under the fillet with the knife just helping (not cutting) I find a knife slightly blunt helps as it wont cut into the skin as you pull this is not the aim you see the aim is to kind of use the blade to peel the skin away. If you can find a video of how to skin Cod its the exact same process but be slightly more delicate. I can obviously only explain so much, and it's much easier to see a vid if I can I'll pop a video up of how to skin a fish. Thanks for commenting and sorry for the long reply hope it helps.
