How to deal with Whiting - How to Cook a proper Fillet-o-Fish.

  • This video is a little bit different to our regular videos, it includes not only a rare catch and cook but an attempt at a how-to video with how to catch Whiting being the loose tutorial.
    As many are aware Whiting are not difficult to catch and being a relative novice pleasure angler myself I am no authority but I’m trying to aim this video at people who consider the fish a pest or never eat smaller Whiting all without not really considering their true value.
    Firstly its a great sport fish with the sheer numbers that can be caught alone but the size of the larger specimens can give a really good scrap. This again is all part of my aim to ensure people understand its a fish that's every bit as good as the traditionally sort after fish like Bass, Cod & others. Its super easy to prepare its part of the Cod or Codling family and so can be treated in much the same way.
    My view is:
    Now-a-days the whole worlds seas & oceans have a man-made/industrially created composition which means all sea fish no matter how clean the catch area is can build up metal and toxins in their flesh.
    I feel its very important to not to be put off by eating smaller fish in general, especially Whiting (unless obviously undersized by Law) smaller fish have less of the metal toxins in their flesh as they haven’t had a long period exposed to it.
    By eating smaller fish we benefit by consuming healthier fish but in lots of other ways too.
    In this latest video we head over to Otterspool outside the Britannia Inn car park on the Liverpool side of the river Mersey for a fishing session. Me and my dad use lug worm Herring peices & Mackerel to tempt the fish into biting. We get some nice fish and cook it at the end too.
    As ever we enjoyed making the video so we do hope you enjoy watching it.
    Do ask us any questions you like via comment or email.
    We hope you can get out fishing & I hope you have some fantastic, safe fun, Finding Fish too.

      Thanks for the comment mate, nice in fish cakes for sure, with prawn sounds very nice. I have been over to the island a few times recently, but as ever I'm pants at getting videos up. I will try and get one up before Xmas, been watching your vids on and off you've had some nice sessions pal. My dads not too bad thanks for asking, come the new year (usually my business quiet time) I should get out fishing more and over to your neck of the woods fingers crossed, also if the Codling start to show in any numbers a meet up on the Mersey would be cool. Anyways enough waffle Tightlines Ceirion and all the very best to you friends and family for Christmas 🎄 🎣🎅

    I agree, it's very tasty and in great abundance.
    Can I ask how you skinned them? I usually leave the skin on for cooking as the small scales aren't really an issue.

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching glad you agree, as for skinning, I skin them exactly the same way you would any fish just a little more delicate, basically once filleted, skin side down to your chopping surface start at the tail end cut into the flesh slightly in from the tail through the meat towards the skin beneath, stopping just before you hit the skin, then using a slight sawing action but hardly moving the knife at all grip the skin and pull towards you all the while with a sawing action with the knife but not really cutting just letting the flesh and skin hit the blade as you effectively pull the skin off from under the fillet with the knife just helping (not cutting) I find a knife slightly blunt helps as it wont cut into the skin as you pull this is not the aim you see the aim is to kind of use the blade to peel the skin away. If you can find a video of how to skin Cod its the exact same process but be slightly more delicate. I can obviously only explain so much, and it's much easier to see a vid if I can I'll pop a video up of how to skin a fish. Thanks for commenting and sorry for the long reply hope it helps. All the best Tim and Dave. 🐟🎣😋

      Thanks for watching pal, We do fish further up too but tend to go in the car there as the van isn't needed if we fish well away from it. All the best, Tim and Dave. 🎣🐟

    Great video as usual guy's, hope you're dad's on the mend,what part of the tide is it best to fish otterspool bud

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and the comment, dad is slowly on the mend thanks. We find fishing the tide up at Otterspool promenade best but depending on the size of the tide and part of Otterspool you fish it can be different..but generally half way up is a good time to start to fish. A good general rule of thumb is most promenade venues on the Mersey are best fished half way up tide until perhaps 1-2 hrs after. Be aware even a small tide on the Mersey will see you struggle to hold bottom when the tide is on its way back out. There is no substitute for having a go, you can get a real feel for an area simply by fishing it cautiously and seeing what works. Hope this helps. Thanks again and all the best. Tightlines, Tim and Dave. 🐟🎣👍

      Thanks for the comment, I use a combination of a cheap go pro type camera and my phone. I also use a few cheap accessories like a ring light and a tripod with phone holder. If any of my footage looks grainy, bad quality or pixelised its usually be due to it being so highly zoomed in. Hope that helps in any way. All the best Tim and Dave 🎣 🐟

    Whiting is not a part of the cod fsmily, it is a main stay of food for them, cod family hav a beard on chin just like the coalfish which is a part of cod family, whiting is not, good fact is when whiting come go shore the cod follow it's food.

      Thanks for watching and commenting its much appreciated, I am far from an expert on exact fish species details I simply research to find the best accurate info on the Web I USED THIS AS MY SOURCE: ***The Gadidae are a family of marine fish, included in the order Gadiformes, known as the cods, codfishes, or true cods.[2] It contains several commercially important fishes, including the cod, haddock, whiting, and pollock.*** If that is incorrect I apologise and I encourage People to research for themselves too to find out more or find their own info. Thanks for your input and all the very best to you. Tim and Dave 🐟🎣👍

      FindingFishUK Not a cod then just a part wider group, or Merlangius Merlangus commonly known as whiting or Merling.

    • @FindingFishUK
      @FindingFishUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @kennethholroyd3588 yes as far as I know its just part of the wider family yes, so I was referring to it being very "Cod like" so can be treated much the same for food. Again, thanks for commenting and all the best to you.
