Wolfe Ridge 17VS modifications.
I follow a few log splitter manufacturers and one of them pointed out the pivot points on a Wolfe Ridge 17VS log lift table. So, I had the grease fittings, drill bits, and tap and took an hour to "improve" these wear points. I'm sure these areas would last many years, but it didn't take long to make things even better. Still like this splitter a lot and I'm sure it will be splitting long after I'm gone.

    That works. The hinge pivots zerk is not on the correct piece but it’s closed enough. I’d add jam nuts to those bolts. I assume the design is so that the bolt doesn’t pivot but the table pivots on the bolt. Another way would be to just drill 1/8” hole, countersink, then use a needle point grease adapter. No need to tap for zerk.

    It's amazing the number of people that mistakenly use Water Displacer 40 as a lubricant. The lack of grease nipples or replaceable wear components is a bit ordinary. For a commercial use splitter it really should cater for wearing parts.

    The modifications you made should’ve been performed by WolfRidge during the build. Nonetheless, you did them and now have peace of mind in short order. I thought your old splitters were fantastic, but like you I’m too old to run low to the ground splitters. Your WoldRidge is an awesome machine. I wish I had one for my commercial operation, but I’m winding down physically and cannot justify such an expenditure - I’m glad you did, though.

    If the auto shifter isn't moving, be sure there is enough resistance to make it extend. Lay a good size log or split on the bed sideways and move the operator handle forward. The splitter will attempt to split the log and cause pressure to increase which will extend the auto shifter. 1. The splitter will shift to slow speed (more power) and split the log or 2. The auto shifter will extend and the relief valve will activate which will stop the ram travel or 3. The engine may stall. If your auto shifter isn't moving, loosen the fitting at the metering valve on either side or where it goes into the shifter. Move the operator handle forward. Even in the fast speed, oil pressure is attempting to overcome the spring inside the auto shifter and you should have oil coming out of the fitting you have loosened. These splitters are not complicated and once you have everything set correctly, they work great. I sure miss my Lickitys, but age has pushed me to a different way of splitting wood. Keep posting on what you discover with your auto shifter. Good luck

  • @hkerr-di1yg
    @hkerr-di1yg 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I assume you're talking about the small adjustable orifice valve on the 1/4" tubing that goes into the shifter. If you turn it clockwise until it stops, it will still allow the shifter to extend. It's purpose is to allow oil to return or bleed off in a controlled manner. If the valve is open too much, the shifter will bounce back and forth from high to low speed. What you are looking for is a nice even return to the fast speed (less power) once less resistance is encountered. So, start with the valve closed and open maybe a 1/4 turn until you get to your desired operation. Good luck. One more thing: proper operation requires that all o rings are good and the internal spring of the shifter is not damaged. If you look at one of my other videos you'll see where I replaced that spring.

    Can you explain how to adjust the damper valve at the end of the high low shift cylinder? Mine was sitting for a while and now the cylinder isn’t moving, and I suspect it may be restricted there.

      Still having issues?

    • @bomberpanda
      @bomberpanda 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@hkerr-di1yg Yup. I wonder if maybe there’s air in that tube and so it’s not moving the high low shift cylinder. I can pull the plunger out with my hand and it feels like this resistance in there so I’m not sure it’s the O-ring in the cylinder. I have not tried disconnecting the tube or fiddling with the damper valve because I don’t know what I’m doing. If anyone has troubleshooting procedure It would be appreciated before I start tearing into it.

      You should be able to find parts. I assume you don't have any spark. Make sure the coil is set correctly. Should be very close to magnets as they pass by. Finally, I sold both of my two speed splitters. I do however, have a Kohler K181 that I rebuilt and don't need anymore. It is currently for sale. It was removed from a Lickity that I bought. The previous owner ran it low on oil and ruined the crankshaft and connecting rod. Listed on Facebook. I am in NE Pennsylvania. Try to repair that Kohler and keep it original if you can.

    I know there is a connector plate for the lower two prongs. I have not seen anyone use the connector plate for tree work but I think it would help if the top clamp can still get by. The reason I think it would help is to push the second prong past the log instead of bumping into the log.

      Make sure the shuttle valves are not caught in mid position. There are two valves that need to be up against their "stops" . Two speed Lickity start out in fast speed and the auto shift mechanism needs to shift the affected valve to a full position one way or the other. I'll do another video soon and show this.

    After performing my 400 hour service on my L4060, it was amazing how much of a difference it made in the performance. The lifting capacity, the strength it had to push through dirt and gravel and lift it was very noticeable. Still running a homemade machine built in the mid 70s. Most of the welding was done on the sly at the Sparrows Point Ship Yard near Baltimore. Powered by a Cub Cadet 12 horse Kohler. I once thought a log lift would be nice but have found that stacking splits into a "ramp" on one side and leaving a pile "table" on the other side works just fine. It's simple, basic no frills. The starter/generator quit in the 80s, it's had a wrap-it-up rope start since then. It will be for sale along with my 1980 032 and my 64 C10 at my estate sale.
