    I used to work for Piqua engineering back in the late 70s. The way the two stage log splitters were tested they would put a log on sideways with the bark facing the ram and split it that way to test the systems. I never saw one fail.

    Likely a dumb question, but I need to ask anyway.. how much hydraulic fluid is required ?

    My boss owned a firewood yard here in California and was a dealer for Lickity. He really took care of his equip. I operated a lickity for him from age 16 to 22 We sold 90 % white oak with a lttle tan oak and madrone. When you started that up i had a rush of memories. Love those splitters.

      Hello and thanks for subscribing! Not sure what a mini Lickity Splitter looks like, but if it is similar to one of mine, you can easily fix the leaking cylinder. Keep in mind these splitters we're designed to leak a small amount to lubricate the guides on the bed as it slides on each stroke. The main cylinder rod (tube that moves in and out) has an o-ring on the back end. This could be worn down. All of my splitters take a -425 o ring (dash 425) if you find a supplier. In one of my earlier videos I had to replace a broken return spring under the bed. You will need to do something similar to relieve the tension so you can pull out the ram beyond the outer cylinder to access the o ring. This is not an easy job and thankfully doesn't need to be done very often. Tip the wedge end up as high as you can to save oil. Let me put out another video. This is getting kind of long.

      I should have said it's easy if you've done it a few times and have the right tool. Look for a future video because I may have a broken return spring... again.

    Just purchased a lickety splitter. The K181 engine was blown due to being run without oil. I’m planning to replace te Kohler engine with a 6.5hp Predator and keep the John S Barnes pump. Any suggestions about the a location to order parts to rebuilding the Kohler K181.

    Very nice collection. I have a question regarding your EK308. Is the oil tank original? Mine is oil tank is below the base of the splitter. Was curious if there was a design change that changed to a vertical tank. Also, I have an issue with the handle not staying in the locked position at starting the cycle of the ram. Not sure if you've had a similar issue on any of your splitters?

    • @hkerr-di1yg
      @hkerr-di1yg  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe newer versions of these splitters incorporated the reservoir into the base of the machine. As far as your handle not staying in the forward position, I would check the adjustment on the threaded rod that is attached to the shuttle valve. It may need to be backed off a little. The valve could be stopping the handle from going further forward. Maybe I'll do a quick video on this.

    So on you log splitter your has a cartriage style filter. Any idea the part number? Just did the o ring on mine and im sure the filter has never been changed.

    • @hkerr-di1yg
      @hkerr-di1yg  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If your splitter has the metal housing, there is no cartridge to be changed. Simply remove the assembly and remove the screws on one end. Inside is a fine mesh screen you can clean, put it back together and that's it.

    Thanks for posting these videos. Question, what is the notched flat plate running parallel to the cylinder on the engine side of the 528? Apparently it adjusts something but I am brand new to this machine. I would really appreciate any information available as I want to properly use and maintain my great machine.

    • @hkerr-di1yg
      @hkerr-di1yg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The notched flat bar is used to limit the return of the ram, (this is useful when splitting shorter logs so you don't have to wait for the ram to travel far before pushing the log). There should be a spring attached to this notched bar as well. This is covered in the manual. I'll post a video within the next few days. My older Lickity is buried in the snow under a canvas till the snow melts, but I can show how it works on my other one. You have a great machine. Very few parts to wear out. Want to sell it? :-)

      Good to hear that you still use it. I know there are more modern splitters out there, just would like to be around in 50 years to see if they are still operating. I've been using a Lickity Splitter for so long now, I'm not sure if I could get used to a new one. The single wedge is plenty fast for me and I like to keep the pieces about the same size. Those six way or larger are fast, but the size looks to be all over the place. Just a preference I guess.

      @@hkerr-di1yg My brother has it right now. Popping maple rounds thru it. Ive done swamp oak rounds thru it 24 inch dia, put them in the tractor bucket and roll them onto the lickity. Pops them with ease. I thought about painting it but i might be afraid to use it, lol! I was able to get some parts from lowell in Ca. Had to keep it going!

    So I have a lickety-split early I born in 1976 but I love your collection

    • @hkerr-di1yg
      @hkerr-di1yg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I am fortunate to have one, but really lucky to have three that operate the way there meant to be used. I see a lot that have different engines and don't know why the Kohler wasn't repaired or rebuilt. Money I assume. Just think about these splitters made way back, they had autocycle and throttle up and down. Autocycle on the fancy splitters today is an extra. If I was a younger man, I would have an Eastonmade, but my Lickity Splitters will probably be going longer than me. Thanks for commenting!
