    If the auto shifter isn't moving, be sure there is enough resistance to make it extend. Lay a good size log or split on the bed sideways and move the operator handle forward. The splitter will attempt to split the log and cause pressure to increase which will extend the auto shifter. 1. The splitter will shift to slow speed (more power) and split the log or 2. The auto shifter will extend and the relief valve will activate which will stop the ram travel or 3. The engine may stall. If your auto shifter isn't moving, loosen the fitting at the metering valve on either side or where it goes into the shifter. Move the operator handle forward. Even in the fast speed, oil pressure is attempting to overcome the spring inside the auto shifter and you should have oil coming out of the fitting you have loosened. These splitters are not complicated and once you have everything set correctly, they work great. I sure miss my Lickitys, but age has pushed me to a different way of splitting wood. Keep posting on what you discover with your auto shifter. Good luck

    My uncle had a Lickety Log Splitter back in the 70's and he did modify it with a bigger push plate and taller wedge but I can testify that it would split anything... Powerful machine. If it couldn't split it, it would simply push the blade through it and cut it.

    I'm not sure who asked for your advise, but sure glad they did. I needed this video for my adjustment on my splitter. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    I assume you're talking about the small adjustable orifice valve on the 1/4" tubing that goes into the shifter. If you turn it clockwise until it stops, it will still allow the shifter to extend. It's purpose is to allow oil to return or bleed off in a controlled manner. If the valve is open too much, the shifter will bounce back and forth from high to low speed. What you are looking for is a nice even return to the fast speed (less power) once less resistance is encountered. So, start with the valve closed and open maybe a 1/4 turn until you get to your desired operation. Good luck. One more thing: proper operation requires that all o rings are good and the internal spring of the shifter is not damaged. If you look at one of my other videos you'll see where I replaced that spring.

    Thank you for this, I need this on my lickity. But I need to find a new coil and magnets for the Kohler engine. Mine finally quit. Or I need to figure a repower solution

      You should be able to find parts. I assume you don't have any spark. Make sure the coil is set correctly. Should be very close to magnets as they pass by. Finally, I sold both of my two speed splitters. I do however, have a Kohler K181 that I rebuilt and don't need anymore. It is currently for sale. It was removed from a Lickity that I bought. The previous owner ran it low on oil and ruined the crankshaft and connecting rod. Listed on Facebook. I am in NE Pennsylvania. Try to repair that Kohler and keep it original if you can.

    Your knowledge of this splitter is the best I’ve seen. These splitters are a marvel of engineering that has stood the test of time. Sadly (and literally) they just don’t make them like this anymore.

    Great insight on the splitters. Do you have manuals for a mk348 or mk308 by chance? If so, any chance you could email pictures to me? I have been looking for them but they are hard to find. Want to know how to better maintain them. Thanks

    Can you explain how to adjust the damper valve at the end of the high low shift cylinder? Mine was sitting for a while and now the cylinder isn’t moving, and I suspect it may be restricted there.

      Still having issues?

    • @bomberpanda
      @bomberpanda 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hkerr-di1yg Yup. I wonder if maybe there’s air in that tube and so it’s not moving the high low shift cylinder. I can pull the plunger out with my hand and it feels like this resistance in there so I’m not sure it’s the O-ring in the cylinder. I have not tried disconnecting the tube or fiddling with the damper valve because I don’t know what I’m doing. If anyone has troubleshooting procedure It would be appreciated before I start tearing into it.

      If it just leaks oil, it needs new o rings. The o rings are - 425. (Ask for dash 425). There are two, but most of the time it is the one in the front. Very simple to replace, just be prepared to lose a lot of oil or drain out what you can before hand.

      Hello Wayne. Did you ever get an engine? I happen to have a Kohler K181 that is in excellent condition. Runs perfect. I took it off of one of my splitters when the original owner ran it out of oil. I picked up a matched crank and connecting rod off eBay that was used, but in very good condition. Honed the cylinder, lapped valves, etc. I'll show it in a video soon.
