With Covid-19 and lockdowns, restrictions made it a difficult year for Wye Invader Two. Some trips were made but very little video was shot, this is a compilation of some video and a few photos to show what were able to manage.

On this day a year ago, 23rd March 2020 at 18.10, Wye Invader Two returned to her berth at Sharpness Marina after escorting Innisfree (now NutCracker) with @bobbolton to Bristol. Doomed from the beginning by the parochial attitude of the local council, Hereford is cursed by less than mediocre governance since at least the early post war period. The succession of council have lacked any vision and the inability to plan beyond the next election, along the way they’ve squandered innumerable opportunities to develop and improve the lives of those they are responsible to serve by focusing on serving themselves.

How about trying it with a Rib with two 300 hp outboards it shoult cut your time by 2 hrs Also very safe boats on that river !!

Awesome.. The Adventure of a Lifetime 🤗 ( Other than very light craft ) It all my years ive nether seem or heard of anybody sailing this route .. The amount of flotsam is unbelievable ( and that final section upto the weir certainly needs maintenance) Would be great to reopen Llantony Lock .. May God continue to His Grace for you all. John .. What’s the main challenge? Keeping water under the boat or keeping way against the flow? Can you read the river to see where the sandbanks are with confidence?
An understanding of a 10.5 metre Spring tide at Sharpness would be a good start. At 1.5 to 2 hours before high water, with almost 30 feet of tide at Sharpness, the tide has already reached Gloucester 26 miles up river and is being held back by the weir at Maisemore on the River Severn and Llanthony Weir on the Lower Parting downstream of Gloucester Lock, the more rain there is, the more river water there is flowing down the Severn and the greater the depth of water, the less risk there is of smelling her bottom! The total distance from Sharpness to Gloucester is about 26 miles. You have to be confident that your boat or narrowboat is capable of doing an average speed of about 10 mph, this allows you an option within the first hour and the chance to return to Sharpness if there is a problem. Otherwise, you have about 3.5 hours to complete the navigation, departing 2 hours before high water from Sharpness, to pass under the Old Rail Bridge at Gloucester with sufficient air draft and then to pass under Maisemore bridge, again with sufficient air draft and to then to pass over the weir at Maisemore to clear the weir. Keeping way - Having in the last 9 years, been up and down the River Severn from Sharpness about 45 times navigating the Severn with tide is not a problem however, going against is almost impossible for a narrowboat, If you Lock-out from Portishead to return to Sharpness and you are locked out early, Yes you can see the sand banks and its only possible to do this if you stay within the navigable channel, and I understand that is the reason for Sharpness Lock to insist on no Lock ins earlier then 2 hours before high water.

Coming from Chepstow I loved seeing this perspective of that journey up to Llandogo. I have a friend at Chepstow Boat Club who I’ve been hankering for years to take me up there. Trouble is I now live in California. You’re right though, I’ve fished on the Snake River in Idaho and Wyoming and its very reminiscent of the Wye Valley. One day I’ll make the trip and have a pint in the Sloop! Great work capturing this and the commentary was brilliant too!

As a canal buff who has done many run jobs in the past, spent time on trawlers off Iceland, and a Trinity House lightships man, as well as owining my own 90ft luxmotor.I take my hat off to you and your crew. I hope you didn't use the Hope and Anchor. I'm afraid I would have hung him up on one of his dam trees.
Sod that no way I'd take a narrow boat out to sea.

Your videos are great because you let us hear the narrowboat engine, water over the bow, countryside and the odd bit of commentary. Please don’t ruin them by covering all that with daft needless background music. Do you happen to know if Gloucester docks has been cleared of mud yet ? Thanks Stu

We live in Ross on Wye, and have just bought a share in a narrowboat. We plan to get our own narrowboat when we retire. Really hope you have another video coming back down the Wye?
Has your narrowboat got a regular engine in it?
Hi, A new engine and gearbox were fitted in the summer of 2019. It's a Nanni N.50, 47.5hp, 35.42kW @2800 revs and is the latest in energy efficiency and emissions compliant. Last week for a trip to Tewkesbury and return to Sharpness, the hours on the new engine were reading 535 hours.
I'm really surprised that the UK doesn't have an agency or authority that maintains the water way and preserves the waterway for navigation. I'm watching a lot of content from You Tube and really surprised to find in may ways British citizens have more rights or freedoms than Americans. Heck try putting rubble in the river here for fish habitat and the Army Corps of Engineers will be on your case so fast you won't know what hit you. I also find it interesting that your canal system has been kept in a somewhat functional state where many here in the US have been abandoned and in some cases filled in. In the states many railroad right of ways have been turned into paths or trails for hiking or cycling and in some cases snowmobiles or ATVs but the canals were abandoned when railroads started hauling most of the freight.
Hi, it would seem reading your post that we are actually in the same boat as you (no pun intended!). We do have an agency / authority called the Canal and River Trust (canalrivertrust.org.uk/). We’ll ignore the bit about throwing sand in the river (that was over 30 years ago, we probably wouldn’t get away with it today!) Our main canals are still functional and mainly used for leisure purposes although lacking much needed investment, the smaller canals have been abandoned and filled in, many ceased to be functional with the arrival of the railways which made canal transport too slow to be viable and like yourselves, many of our smaller disused and abandoned railways that started to be shutdown in the early 1960’s have become cycle or walking paths.
@@WyeInvader I was more focusing on the rocks that had been thrown across he river for fish habitat. That's been a no-no here in the states for quite a while. Like the UK many of our canals have fallen into disrepair, been filled in or abandoned, rivers not so much. Although I don't know of any major canal systems west of the US State of Illinois, once past Illinois the trains and natural rivers were the dominant transportation source for both development and commerce. I've lately been wondering if the efforts put into preserving our rivers the same hasn't caused some long term consequences and disrupted the long term ecology of some aspects of the river system. It seems to be a natural phenomenon that river change course and or seek new channels, Our Corp of Engineers prevents that.

Hello what happened to Wye Invader I , the Dutch barge. I followed your progress down stream with great interest back in 2013.

Just a week ago I was in Hereford with my scouting group and we made a 20 km Kano journey down the wye and at 26:52 u can see a between there is a tiny piece of land and I went back first throw that gap and then got stuck 😂
