fun fact about the script of this film: there's a lot of actions just not written for the joker. ledger and nolan worked together to create the joker as he is in this film with nolan giving a lot of creative control to ledger. most actions taken that show more personality--including eating and drinking during the fundraiser and, as others have said, during the scene with brian the fake batman--is ledger just going for it. it's actually interesting to read the script online and see the scene for the fake batman's recording because it's mostly flat dialogue. it's the same for the fundraiser; the version I've been reading while writing this comment doesn't have rachel getting grabbed for the story about his wife. it says he turns to her, runs his knife across her cheek, and presses the knife against her cheek. no hair smoothing, no circling, no grab, which implies it was thought up after the script was written. also i watched this film 4 times in the cinema, before and during the initial hype, and during the scene with the truck flipping, you could have heard a pin drop in that (packed!) cinema screening every time. it was amazing to watch and got a lot of people into batman as a whole. it was genuinely a huge boost in popularity for batman and comics in general because it was that good and the previous superhero films were generally fun but kinda campy despite hints of seriousness (x-men and sam rami's spider-man come to mind as examples; x-men definitely took itself very serious) or bad (daredevil 2003 and catwoman come to mind).

3 & 4 are not good but still worth a watch at least once. You should watch the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 though.

Batman is my favorite hero. I favorite run is the Grant Morisson run (the one that starts with Talia introducing Damien and ends in Final Crisis). I think Batman was depicted the most competent there despite all the difficulties he faced. One of my favorite Batman quotes come from that run. At the end of that run right before the Final Crisis event Batman heavily drugged and having fought the enemy and faced other situations was very exhausted and slept for days. But immediately after he woke up Superman called him to solve a murder mystery for the JL my man didn't even get to pull his together. As Batman prepared to go to the JL HQ his inner thoughts contained the quote which I said earlier, it is : "Super-people. I've worked so hard to gain their respect, they sometimes forget I'm flesh and blood." I think that fits his situation quite well.

I understand your point of view that it's okay that Spider-Man is now Otto so that the story changes, but imagine what it must be like to be a fan of Peter at that time and that your favorite hero, after suffering for many years, is not have a happy ending and die in the body of a villain. (Sorry if I have spelling mistakes, I'm not very good at English)
