3 Powerful Lessons from Billionaire Andrew Wilkinson's Memoir

In today’s video, I explore the concept of “enough.” As aspiring "minimalists", we’ve decluttered and downsized, yet we still sometimes feel the pull to upgrade our car, or buy the latest tech. A friend once reminded me, “Being a minimalist doesn’t mean you can’t want nice things,”. Minimalism is more about being intentional about what truly brings value, what genuinely improves our lives. 🌱
In this video, I’ll share insights from Andrew Wilkinson’s book Never Enough, where Wilkinson, a successful entrepreneur and billionaire, uncovers the hidden costs of always chasing “more.” Here are some key themes from the book:
Mimetic Desire - We often want what others desire.
Anti-Goals Exercise - A practical tool for setting boundaries by identifying what you don’t want in life, or at work.
Journey vs. Destination - Finding joy in the process, not just the end goal.
Defining Enough - Shifting focus from external achievements to inner contentment.
Whether you’re a minimalist or simply seeking a mindful lifestyle, Wilkinson's real-life stories will help you reflect on what brings true peace and joy. Let me know in the comments what “enough” means for you. 💬

Me encantan tus videos. Saludos desde España (Catalunya)
Maybe it would help when you should downsize your tv! Such a large one is not necessary for enjoying watching together. I wish you success!
Such a lovely video and cat!❤
It's funny you mention this, but I have had the thought for the last few years that I don't need anymore material "things." But definitely less stress and conflict. I'll try your suggestion to set goals that help steer me away from those.
I found this channel this evening. I love Finland and Finnish life, even if the weather is cold in wintertime. I live in Italy but I hate the hot summers. thank you for sharing this video.
Thank you for the wonderful video. So inspiring and calm. As i get older, enough means less, means to be grateful and present. Try not to buy things all the time and see what we have at home. I'm trying every day to be a better person and live wisely concerning my choices, I would like to have enough health to fullfill my journey. Wishing you a wonderful evening. Sending greetings from Portugal.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Greetings to Portugal from Finland!
It’s okay to strive for more in life. Humans striving for more has advanced our society and provided a great quality of life. Enjoying the journey as he says is what matters. Challenging yourself or pursuing new things can help you find what is enough in life. I found when I found success in life, it came after periods of making myself uncomfortable. But this helped me really hone what matters to me and that’s when I found the confidence to truly know what was enough. I’ve been happy for a long time.
Thank you for this thoughtful perspective! 🌱 I agree, making ourselves uncomfortable is often where the real growth happens.
What is enough is such an interesting topic! When I am drawn to an item for its functionality or beauty, I ask myself do I need it? Or do I want it because of what it represents? Pondering what I need vs want, has allowed me to understand my life years of conditioning and influence. I came to understand some of my choices were rooted in my visits with family overseas during my formative years! After deliberating with myself before making a purchase, there are still times when I regret making that purchase. Sometimes we just want to treat ourselves, right? Best to treat ourselves with an outing and a coffee at a local cafe ☕ The St George Bakery you visited is lovely! As is the autumn scenery in your city. I enjoyed this vlog very much🍁
Thank you for your lovely message! 🌱 I agree, treating ourselves to an experience, like a cozy coffee outing with a friend, is better than buying some item ❤️
Thanks for sharing this 😊
I love your decoration of this room. I love the plant in the window & your view of trees outside. I love Kuro the most x
Thank you for your video such a beautiful autumnal backdrop very soothing. This book has me intrigued and I will put it on my Christmas wish list.. I personally buy more sustainable products now and very often second hand if I can.. As I get older I seem to be going back to the philosophy of my mother’s generation. Make do and men be grateful for what you have. Look after your possessions and they will last a long time. There are some very helpful tips from this book thank you for sharing. How beautiful is your skyline in Finland I have found this in other Nordic countries also. Enjoy your Sunday 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊It's true, there’s so much wisdom in looking after what we have and being grateful, just like our parents' and grandparents' generations did. Wishing you a wonderful Sunday as well!
I think the human mind is wired for novelty. It’s why packing some things away and then rummaging through them after a few months is so fun. I try to remember that I have limited resources and find the nicest, most sustainable version of a product. Instead of the one right in front of me. I was running errands last night and saw beautiful pajamas. I enjoyed them in the store but know I would rather have natural fibers so I didn’t buy them.
It’s so true, humans seem to love novelty, even if it’s just rediscovering something we already own. I also try to choose products that last a long time. Thank you for sharing 💚
How are you? 🌱I recently read "Never Enough" by Andrew Wilkinson. It's an autobiography with surprisingly honest and vulnerable personal stories. While it dives into his work, it’s not a business book. Wilkinson reflects on what it means to live with intention, uncovering the hidden costs of constantly chasing “more.” It got me thinking about what “enough” truly means. What does “enough” mean to you? Do you ever feel that urge for something new, even after simplifying? Here are some insights from the book: 1. "Mimetic Desire" (We often desire what our peers have, not necessarily what aligns with our own values or needs) 2. "Anti-Goals" exercise (Instead of only setting goals for what we want, defining what we don’t want in life or work can help focus on what matters) 3. Joy in the journey, not just the destination 4. Defining enough (Shifting focus from external achievements to internal contentment) 5. Living with intentionality (Being mindful of what truly adds value to our lives) It's a great read, I recommend reading it, especially if you enjoy reading autobiographies / memoirs. There's a surprising end in the book! :)
Gracias
I love hearing about people’s creative processes and their surroundings. It’s so interesting to note what Virginia Woolf wrote in A Room of One’s Own is really true for any artist of any type, male or female. I’m trying to make progress with decluttering a home office for writing and I’ve noticed that the state of the office either hinders or cultivates creativity. Great video. Thanks. 🕯️
I come from Germany / Lower Saxony, but it seems I'm absolutly nordic 😁 I have so much in common with you and other nordic people. Maybe I'm a nordic person born in the wrong country. For me, most of the time, it is too loud here, too many people, too much stuff ...
❤️👍
I love Nordic travelers!
Beautiful place first I would put bookshelves in the middle of the long wall instead of corner in the corner a floor light would be appropriate exposure to all your children stuff would become more enjoyable tv perhaps on top of a chest with work better and use Chester drawers for everyday use desk is a beautiful piece but lost perhaps better suited as a bed side table anyway like you said you always moving things around tv should not be on the floor you had a nice chest that would be great well enjoy it takes time
Genetically speaking, I’m 95% Western Slavic. But my family originated from the Baltic coast. Seems like maybe I might have picked up some Nordic tendencies somewhere along the line.
Weird? It sounds idyllic. ☺️
Similar in the UK. I have just had my flu jab - free to over 50s and vulnerable. We are advised to take vitamin D supplements but it’s not in our milk I don’t think and some people use light lamps for seasonal depression. It gets dark here about 4pm in the depth of winter. We don’t have winter tyres on our cars though as we don’t get enough snow to warrant it but all cars carry scrapers and de-icers in their cars and some have antifreeze to stop our water freezing. We had our boiler serviced recently for the winter. We also had our Covid top up jabs ready for winter. So very similar.
Sounds very similar! 👍❤️
One of the moments of increasing calm in my week comes when watching your videos. You give me hope and ideas with each video. Thank you!❤
❤️
Wao, Budapest! ˖⁺‧₊˚♡˚₊‧⁺˖
Living in Canada we share the same winter preparation as my winters can go down to -45c. Winter tires are not mandatory though, although I wish they were as I think they truly help with the ice and snow!
I know what you mean find it hard to sit still 😂... i used to be like that during meditation and find 10 mins meditation so long.. but now i find 10 mins meditation flew by and i am addicted in how it makes me feel so calm after and how it help me let go more unneccessary things during the day.. i guess don't force it you do what works for you 🥰🥰
Thank you for sharing! It's inspiring to hear how meditation has become such a calming and positive part of your routine! 🧘♀️ I definitely want to learn and practice more. It’s reassuring to know that, with time, those 10 minutes can really start to feel natural and even fly by. 🥰
I think i can be a Nordic person 😂... i like eat quietly i like my personal moment eventhough i like socialising but sometimes it fatigued me and i need to withdraw and some alone time 😆.. i also like wearing wool sock because its comforting and practical clothes for travel definately a yes for me too 😂😂
I have only just found your videos and I absolutely love them. As to the room layouts, I agree with others that the TV is much too big for this space, it just dominates the whole room. The table would look much better at the kitchen end - can you even get to the bookcase with the table in front of it. You also have to carry the food from one end to the other, I would prefer to just be able to turn round from the kitchen tops and put the food on the table.
Cool content
Thank you!
I have an app to motivate me to meditate and take time for mindfulness. They plant trees for people when I meditate so it’s not just making my life better. So far this year I have planted 30 trees through them. If I’m struggling I go sit in the garden and just breathe while my mind empties out.
That sounds wonderful, thank you for sharing!
That's fantastic! It’s so inspiring to hear how you're combining mindfulness with making a positive impact on the environment.
I have my routines that bring me calm and I rarely allow anything to interfere with my calming routines - my early morning walk before work with my dog, a leisurely breakfast, my Saturday morning food shop, weekend hikes…all of these small things bring me peace.
That's wonderful! 🩷
Hello! I have been on a similar path for awhile now. Letting go of so many things I had accumulated for a life different to how I live now. Having less things has given me a sense of calm and ease in my home. After a 40 years in corporate life, I continue to try and achieve daily mindfulness and being present ☺ I have a small home but in near future I see myself in a smaller apartment. Closer to the city for accessibility for what I need day to day. I really enjoy your insights and glimpses into the changes you have made.
Thank you for your kind words! 😊 Wishing you all the best!
Sorry to be off topic, but the captain sounds just like Bane.
I'm happy that you are back living near your friends - that is so important. Kuro is so happy that his people are back home!! On mindfulness, the book "Good Morning, I Love You" by Shauna Shapiro is incredible and would be a great book for you to do a video on. Have you read it? Another beautiful video. You are my favorite TH-camr!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 It really is wonderful to be closer to friends, and you're absolutely right, Kuro is loving having us home! I haven’t read Good Morning, I Love You yet, but I’ll definitely check it out. A video on it could be a great idea, thank you for the suggestion!
I love your videos. So peaceful and calming. I am trying to get into practicing mindfulness. I really need it. Also doing more decluttering of my home on a regular basis. Making it a habit. 🙂
Thank you so much! 😊 It sounds like you’re on a wonderful path ❤️
❤
For anyone who wants a more calm and peaceful life, I have a book to recommend. Stolen Focus by Johann Hari is probably the most important book I have ever read.
Thank you for the recommendation! 😊 I’ll definitely check it out! If anyone else has book recommendations on finding peace and focus, feel free to share them here! ❤️
Kuro so cosy on your husbands lap❤ I think pets can really improve your mental health. I love the way you plate up your biscuits for tea. My home is clutter free I prefer it that way I agree it doesn’t stop stressful situations, but it gives a calm space to recharge. Too much clutter I feel overwhelms the senses and it must be hard to relax. I like to be mindful when walking our dog every day. Although sometimes the demands on my time can make me want to rush through this but I always try to stop breathe and slow down live in the moment and I am also mindful this is my dogs time to enjoy. Your videos are also very calming and remind us to be more mindful in our every day life. 😊
Thank you for your kind words! 😊 I agree, pets have a way of bringing lots of comfort and joy 🐾❤️ It sounds like you’ve created a wonderfully mindful routine with your daily dog walks. I love that you see your daily walks as a moment for your dog to enjoy! Thank you for sharing that ❤️
@@calmnordic thankyou 😊 I look forward to your Christmas decorations although it’s early yet I know and hopefully the snow.
I have always found calm in minimalist living. Nordic culture seems quite similar to Maritime culture, where we embrace nature and family/friends.
True! Here in Finland, many people own cabins on islands in the sea or by the lakes. Spending time by the water is a big part of our lifestyle in the summer.
That's a beautiful perspective! Embracing minimalism and nature creates such a serene and inviting atmosphere
I love your vlog! Greetings from Italy ❤
Thank you so much! 😊❤️

✨ Hi! How are you? What does "living simply" mean to you? In this video, I talk about: 1. Downsizing 2. The importance of location 3. Minimalism 4. Mindfulness
I watch Diane in Denmark and she is a regular cold plunge person! Some of these things I do, but most I never heard of and sounds fascinating!

I was glad to see that you visited our sunny capital, Budapest, and the "House of Hungarian Music", a magical palace complex full of fantasy (designed by the genius Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto). If you have a chance do not miss it!
@polyglot.basketer947 We have been together for almost half a century. He was very reserved, serious but kind and quiet. He was very tall, thin, with reddish-blonde hair and a beard. He was smart about finance and could solve any technical problem. He hated being late, he was always punctual. Enjoyed good food and coffee. One of his hobby was solving mathematical tasks. He knew all the constellations in the sky. He had a special good sense of driving, it was safe to sit by his side. He loved country music. He was convinced he could dance and sing, but it was a disaster. Sometimes he would tell jokes that made him laugh, but I usually didn't understand them, and he would justify it by saying "you know, it's just our silly humor". He was named entirely after nature, and his name was so beautiful. In that period I was a happy woman, but unfortunately he's no longer with us... This is how I do remember the habits of a northern man...
