I live just a minute's walk from Penn Castle in one of the oldest cottages on the island. The land behind us, just north of Church Ope is called Penn's Weare and that is where the stone came from to rebuild London after the Great Fire of 1666 and St Paul's. Sir Christopher Wren chose the stone he wanted and it was marked with a 'Wren mark'. One of them didn't make it to London because it's in my hall! There are so many stories here. I write about Portland every month for the free West of Dorset Magazine. It's online if you can't get here to pick up a copy. Nice video, thank you! 😁

Great walk Nic. As you say, it was a climb all the way up from the car park, but we'll worth the effort. It's amazing how early man built these places with nothing more than primitive tools! I clicked on this because I thought it was Victoria Coren Mitchell in the thumbnail and I really like her, but I'm so glad I did. Beautiful photography and what a lovely little place! I adore Dorset, so I will try to make a trip back there in the summer.

Great vid. What a shame about all the ancient vandalism, resulting in kings and saints being lost and jumbled, if the old idea of the dead bones rising was to occur there would be some arguments over what was who. It is a most impressive building. Keep wyrdly walking! Exits singing "Dem Bones"

A marvellous, interesting and informative article. Portland is one of my sanctuaries, to where I retreat when I need to recharge. My feet have trodden many of the pathways used by you. Thank you. 😊

St Mary's Church was founded in Norman times but it was burned down by Dutch prisoners in 1653 and pretty much totally rebuilt by Queen Anne between 1706-10. It was also heavily refurbished in 1888. The priory itself butted between the church and walls and that was totally pulled down in the 12th century. With only the walls in the Roman wall made for the toilets still present.

One of my favourite walks with our dog. Abundance of Sky Larks, various orchids, kestrel and deer, at the appropriate time of the year. There's even a prehistoric ammunition dump! It consists of a huge mound of round even sized pebbles for sling shots!

I'm thinking that the so called 'Pirate grave' looks more likely something Masonic?. Skulls and bones, stone working tools, and was that a 🪢 or a serpent, either feature heavily in their iconography.
