Winchester Cathedral | Exploring The Longest Medieval Cathedral In The World!
มุมมอง 3.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this walk, I take a look at the stunning Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire in the UK. The current cathedral was commissioned by William The Conqueror in 1079 but there has been a Christian Minster on the same site since the 7th century. The cathedral has been dubbed the longest medieval cathedral in the world at a whopping 170 metres (about 558 feet) long. The ca...
Exploring The Magical Holloways Of West Dorset | Shute's Lane, Hell Lane And Colmer's Hill
มุมมอง 9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I take an enchanting walk through some of the magical holloways of West Dorset. These holloways are believed to be around 300 years old. The soft sandstone, which is prominent in some parts of southern England, is easily eroded over time by the movement of people, cattle, drovers, pilgrims, and even smugglers. This erosion has created these beautiful ...
The Dark History Of Maumbury Rings

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I take a walk through the history of Maumbury Rings in Dorchester, Dorset. This site was originally a neolithic henge - believed by historians to have been used for ceremonial use. When the Roman's discovered the site, they transformed it into a Roman Amphitheatre which played host to Gladiatorial battles! During the civil war, the site was repurposed...
Smuggling In The New Forest | The Charming Story Of Lovey Warne
มุมมอง 3.1K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello and welcome to Walking The Wyrd! Lovey Warne was a prominent figure of smuggling lore in the New Forest in the South of England during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Lovey actively helped with the smuggling of contraband from the coast, inland to her home in Burley. Lovey also acted as a human beacon to warn others when the Revenue Men were in the area, by walking across a hill displa...
Knowlton Church & Earthworks | Where Christianity & Paganism Meet
มุมมอง 10K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In 12th Century Dorset, the Norman's decided to build a christian church in the middle of a neolithic ceremonial earthwork. Historians believe this may have been to assert the dominance of the new religion over the old. The church served the nearby village, which sat on the banks of the River Allen, just 500 metres north-west of the church and earthworks. However, i...
Exploring The Myths And Legends Of Portland, Dorset!
มุมมอง 15K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! The Isle of Portland in Dorset, has a rich maritime history and with that, many interesting local legends. From mermaids, to a pirate's graveyard, to Viking raids, Portland's folklore has been shaped by its history as an important place for smuggling and sea faring! I began my walk at the north of the island near Tout Quarry, and headed south-east to the fascinating...
A Walk Through The Ages | Discovering Dorset's Iron Age Hillforts
มุมมอง 14K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
A warm welcome to Walking The Wyrd! You would be forgiven for passing a hillfort without giving it much thought. To most of us today, they are a pretty place to walk with spectacular views. However, to our ancestors, they were so much more. In this walk, I explore the Neolithic, Iron Age and even modern 17th century history of the incredible Hambledon Hill in Dorset before then exploring it's n...
The Abandoned Chapel In The Woods | St Luke's Chapel
มุมมอง 4.8K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! This week, I take a summer stroll through the beautiful Dorset landscape in search of an abandoned chapel in the woods. The chapel of St Luke, just north of Abbotsbury, was built in 1246 by Cistercian monks. They lived and farmed the surrounding lands for 300 years until the dissolution of the monasteries saw the chapel reduced to rubble. The chapel then fell under ...
Portchester Castle | From Roman Fort To Medieval Stronghold!
มุมมอง 7K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I explore the incredible grounds of Portchester Castle which started life as a Roman Fort to defend from the invasion of Saxon barbarian pirates! The fort was well used by the Saxons after Roman rule as a fortified settlement. Later, the Normans took ownership and added the great square keep which is one of the largest and oldest keeps in England. The...
Exploring The Hellfire Caves | Home Of The Hedonistic Hellfire Club!
มุมมอง 3.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! The West Wycombe Caves were excavated with good intentions by Sir Francis Dashwood, 2nd Baronet, to relieve local unemployment which had been caused by three consecutive failed harvests in the mid 18th century. The local men were able to find work quarrying the chalk in the caves which was then used as a building material in the local area. But, it was the hedonisti...

What an interesting video; thank you for posting it.
Wonderful video. Absolutely love Portland and go every year to stay out at the Bill.
I live just a minute's walk from Penn Castle in one of the oldest cottages on the island. The land behind us, just north of Church Ope is called Penn's Weare and that is where the stone came from to rebuild London after the Great Fire of 1666 and St Paul's. Sir Christopher Wren chose the stone he wanted and it was marked with a 'Wren mark'. One of them didn't make it to London because it's in my hall! There are so many stories here. I write about Portland every month for the free West of Dorset Magazine. It's online if you can't get here to pick up a copy. Nice video, thank you! 😁
Thanks for the extra info! Portland is such a fascinating place.
What an amazing place to visit. I can feel the energy 😌 ✨️ thru the screen. Feels like the temple of time from Zelda.
Great walk Nic. As you say, it was a climb all the way up from the car park, but we'll worth the effort. It's amazing how early man built these places with nothing more than primitive tools! Haven't seen anything new from you for quite a while. I do hope you are okay. Thanks for sharing this interesting place with me. ❤
I hope you are having a Happy 2025. Keep Wyrdly Walking! But where is your adventurous spirit going to lead you next? Bye!
I clicked on this because I thought it was Victoria Coren Mitchell in the thumbnail and I really like her, but I'm so glad I did. Beautiful photography and what a lovely little place! I adore Dorset, so I will try to make a trip back there in the summer.
I hope you do make the trip! It is such a peaceful spot and worth the walk for those beautiful views. Thanks for watching!
I know I'm a bit late to the party so to speak, but for some reason I was really moved by the story of the Knight and the Dragon. Such a sad tale. Thank you for sharing, and for your tour of Burley and the New Forrest. 👍 Andy x
Most welcome, thank you!
Great vid. What a shame about all the ancient vandalism, resulting in kings and saints being lost and jumbled, if the old idea of the dead bones rising was to occur there would be some arguments over what was who. It is a most impressive building. Keep wyrdly walking! Exits singing "Dem Bones"
Thanks, David!
Hi! You will just have to wait for a long dry spell, and try the hell lane bit again. Either that or use ice axe and crampons. Colmer's hill looks very handsome. Keep wyrdly walking! Bye!
I live in netley abbey 😊
lovely. I was born in Winchester and I am descended from the Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet kings. I have spend many happy hours in there since I was a little child. What a place to rest for eternity... Thanks
A marvellous, interesting and informative article. Portland is one of my sanctuaries, to where I retreat when I need to recharge. My feet have trodden many of the pathways used by you. Thank you. 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Portland is such a fascinating place to visit. I hope to return!
St Mary's Church was founded in Norman times but it was burned down by Dutch prisoners in 1653 and pretty much totally rebuilt by Queen Anne between 1706-10. It was also heavily refurbished in 1888. The priory itself butted between the church and walls and that was totally pulled down in the 12th century. With only the walls in the Roman wall made for the toilets still present.
Gaslight & Coke sounds like a terrible cocktail.
True! 😄
Hi, why do the locals not like the pirates graveyard? Enjoying your video very, it popped up on my recommendations.
Purely because those that are actually buried here were local people who had no part in piracy.
I was born in Sherborne and still live here, I never tire of this beautiful little town.
Enchanting video many thanks
Thank you- enjoyable presentation
It was nice to hear the story 😊
Thank you! Any relation to you?
@walkingthewyrd im told we maybe from a dim and distant past
Thank you I really enjoyed the tour, I think I will visit Winchester next time I am in the UK.
I hope you do. It's such an interesting city.
Great video I'm coming to visit on the 17th looking forward to it ❤
I'm certain you will have a wonderful visit!
@walkingthewyrd I'm going to the cathedral looking for a gravestone mentioned in a book I'm reading
Nice filming, research and storytelling.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for such a fantastic video. xxx
Thank you! Really appreciated.
That looked like a very pleasant stroll over a variety of terrain. I found watching it, when ice and snow are about, strangely comforting and very relaxing. Keep wyrdly walking. Bye!
One of my favourite walks with our dog. Abundance of Sky Larks, various orchids, kestrel and deer, at the appropriate time of the year. There's even a prehistoric ammunition dump! It consists of a huge mound of round even sized pebbles for sling shots!
I must return in warmer weather!
I think they need the builders in 🍓 Cheers Doug.
Witch ever way you look it doesn't end well ! 🍓
I'm thinking that the so called 'Pirate grave' looks more likely something Masonic?. Skulls and bones, stone working tools, and was that a 🪢 or a serpent, either feature heavily in their iconography.
