- Welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
In this walk, I take a wander around the historic market town of Sherborne in Dorset.
This pretty town was originally called Scir Burne by the Saxons meaning 'clear stream' which refers to the brook that runs through the town. The town's abbey was first founded in 705 by King Ine. He appointed St Aldhelm as the first Bishop of Sherborne. In 1075, the abbey became a Benedictine monastery and then later, in 1539 after the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey changed once again into a parish church.
Surprisingly, life hasn't always been peaceful for the abbey and in the 1400s, the abbey was damaged by fire after a conflict occurred between the monks and the towns people.
It is also reported that one of the Bishops, St Osmund, laid a curse upon anyone who tried to take the castle (or abbey, the folklore varies) from the church in the 11th century!

I was born in Sherborne and still live here, I never tire of this beautiful little town.
What a way to start my Saturday morning. It always gets my imagination going to see these ruins and wonding what they would have looked like in their glory days.

Loved the history surrounding the castle and yet again, that era of the civil war and reformation of the church crops up, it features in many of our historic buildings past. The Abbey ceiling....WoW....so detailed. Great job Nic 👏🏻
It's such a beautiful roof, I agree! Thanks as always for your support, Mark! 😊

Hi Nic, what a beautiful abbey and ruins of the old castle! I love how you touch the walls to connect with the past, I do that too at every place I visit 😊amazing to see the oak wood survive after 500 years. I doubt it will be there another few hundred now it's exposed to the elements. Great video!!
Thank you, David! They don't build them like they used to! Thanks for watching, always appreciated. ☺️

Thank you for bringing us along. I really enjoyed your visit! And learning more about the castle Sherburne. Two swings off the killing axe world not have been enough to have satisfied me!!
The Abby, Monastery, and church and the history of all is both beautiful and fascinating!

Thank you, Lee! I'm so glad I can bring them to you virtually.
Lovely walk around the old castle. That's a place I've been wanting to visit for quite a while now. Sherborne town is also a wo derful place and the Abbey is very spectacular both inside and out. It's strange as to where all the people were. Very quiet indeed. Thanks Nic
Most welcome! Such an interesting and historic town. Thanks for watching, Lionel.
So many beautiful locations in this one! Thank you for all the work you put into your videos, Nic! 😊❤
Thank you, Jodi! It's a pleasure! 🩷
Great video , i visited the castle and house/gardens in June .It's very atmospheric igot a feeling of sadness. The deer parks are ancestors from the same deer introduced in the 15th century. Thank you subd. Much love from Cornwall ❤❤
Hey, thanks so much for watching and for the sub! I really appreciate it. 😊
Great video. I've yet to check out Sherbourne, and this video reminded me to go there, especially to see those human remains!
The abbey is definitely a must see! So much to see 🙂
Hi Nic. Beautiful Sherborne, such a wonderful town. I dated a girl from there in 1987/88. It didn’t end well, though… she two-timed me.😏Anyway, another lovely walk with some well explained and thoughtful history. Always a pleasure, never a bore. Look after yourself Nic. Simon
Thank you, Simon! Hopefully, your experiences haven't put you off the town too much! 🙃
@@walkingthewyrd Hey Nic. Nah, ya win some, ya lose some… her loss not mine; my conscience is clear. Sherborne remains a beautiful place.🙏🏻🤘🏻❤️
Wow this is amazing 😮
Damn you get around !!!!!

Wow! Beautiful!
Thanks Mrs Geek! 🖤
Great video Nic. Loved the music!
Thank you, Dave!
Always looking forward for your vids. Are you meeting Beardo?
Thank you, Carlitos, and yes, I met the Bearded one!
I was there in June, there was a chap who gave free tours of the Abbey which was informative, the new castle is worth a visit though it was closed on the day I went but the garden was beautiful. There was no one about in either castle though I saw no ghosts .Lol.👻
I think a return is on the cards! Thanks for watching. 😊
As ever a great video, I often feel something in these places but it just feels out of reach, maybe the spirits of many wrapped in time, its difficult to explain, so close but yet so far. thank you for efforts..atb Tom..
I know exactly what you mean. Just out of reach is how I'd describe it. 🙂
The abbey is absolutely stunning, curiously a lot of Catholic iconography surviving in the church, I'm amazed that it survived the reformation. It Always amazes me the buildings of such epic architecture and monumental scale were built by peasants living in mud huts. I wonder what they made of it all.
Yes, this abbey is an absolute gem! It looks lovely from outside but inside it something else.
