Smuggling In The New Forest | The Charming Story Of Lovey Warne

- Hello and welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
Lovey Warne was a prominent figure of smuggling lore in the New Forest in the South of England during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Lovey actively helped with the smuggling of contraband from the coast, inland to her home in Burley. Lovey also acted as a human beacon to warn others when the Revenue Men were in the area, by walking across a hill displaying the red lining of her coat. When other smugglers saw Lovey's bright red signal, they knew not to attempt to move any contraband until the coast was clear! After a very close shave with a Revenue Man in the town of Christchurch, Lovey vowed never to involve herself in smuggling again.
In this video, I am joined by Dave Ford and his dog Logan from the TH-cam channel, 'Dave's Countryside Walks.' Dave invited me to join him and Logan so that he could show me the places where Lovey and her family lived and operated from. Dave and I literally walked in the footsteps of Lovey across the beautiful New Forest.

Lovey video Nic. Logan & I really enjoyed our walk with you ..... we were so lucky with the weather. We even managed to avoid any "bloopers" (although it was a close shave, when walking backwards trying to film one of Logan's Zoomies!).
That was a close call indeed! You did say you liked the heather - thought maybe you wanted a closer look at it 😆
Thanks for a great day and for sharing your knowledge.
Just watched the 3 of you and now I'm going to watch Nic. Comments for her later. Bye for now.
Two of my favourite channels together - wonderful good work both of you 🙂
Awww, thank you! 😊

Thanks Kate!
Thank you. Lovely pooch, ❤,👌,😊.

@@walkingthewyrd He looked like a fun loving sweetie. I’m a cat man myself but I love dogs. A friend of mine has a Chocolate Labrador who, at 10 years old, is the biggest puppy I’ve ever seen. Just adorable. 🙂
Very cool!
Thanks Mythos! 😊👋🏻

Hello Nic. Really great vlog and so, so interesting. Real shame Loveys grave is thought to be unmarked.
What a fantastic Beech tree too.
Love the channel and look forward to the next walk. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching 😊
Hello Nic. Just popping up to say how much I enjoy your videos, which I only discovered a few months ago. Your walks are now right up there with my other favourite TH-cam channels, those of John Rogers and Through Lucy's Lens. Keep the Wyrd alive! P.S. Who doesn't love a whippet - I share my home with one, beautiful Bonny, who is adorable. xxx
Your comment means so much! Thank you! Whippets are indeed lovely dogs, so gentle. I've got a very naughty Irish Terrier in my house! 😄 Thanks again 😊
Nic
Came over from Dave’s channel, love the local history video, look forward for more
Hi Alan! Welcome to my channel. I hope you enjoy my content. Many thanks.
It was nice to hear the story 😊
Thank you! Any relation to you?
@walkingthewyrd im told we maybe from a dim and distant past
Very cool beautiful places 👀
Fascinating piece of history. Smuggling was certainly a fairly common activity along the south coast. My several great grandfather, Roger Ridout, was a well known 'independent tradesman' at a similar time to Lovey Warne !
Ah yes, I came across Roger Ridout when researching Lovey! Great that you have that ancestral connection!
Ive been directed to your channel from the lovely Peter Laws, so this is my first visit. ❤
He's such a lovely chap! I appreciate you checking out my content. Thank you!
Lovely story. The Forest is my home and I love to learn about it's history. I've never heard this story before. Thank you so much for this, I can't get out and about due to mobility problems, but you have brought the Forest Indoors for me, beautiful film.
It's a super story, isn't it!
I'm pleased we could bring the magic of the New Forest to you. ✨️
This was an informative and enjoyable walk. Thanks Nic!
Thank you, Barry! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing the story of the courageous Lovey Warne. It was nice to see Dave and Logan guiding for you along Lovey Warne's route and on through Ridley's Wood in the New Forest. Would John Warne's sentence of being "transported' mean sent to one of the Colonies, such as Australia? Your video is very well made and you are a terrific presenter.
Hi there! Thank you for your kind comment! It was lovely to meet Dave and Logan - I've been enjoying Dave's channel very much. I think John was likely deported to Australia, yes. I couldn't find him in any further UK documents after that date.
Thanks for watching!
Crackin stuff Nic, beautiful scenery and a most interesting tale. Great to have Dave & Logan to guide you along. Thank you.
Cheers, Mark! Always nice to have a bit of company on these walks 😊
😂😂gr8 story 😂😂
It is rather lovely! 🙂
Great video with fantastic history, love the New Forest used to live in that area a few years ago. Love Daves channel as well and am a follower of his. So it was brilliant to see you two together. Thank you
Thanks so much! I love Dave's channel, it's very relaxing to watch 😊 Was lovely to meet him!
Another cool story...you can certainly find them Nic!
Cheers, David! Appreciated 😊
Great Video. I am enjoying these. I am learning so much about the areas near and around Salisbury.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Thanks Nic
Thank you for watching! 🙂
Found your channel via Dorset Paranormal and loving working through your content. Your stories and places you go are amazing!
As an Aussie I find it interesting if Lovey's nephew was transported to Australia if there are any family trees to uncover here perhaps! A distant relative of the cricketer Shane Warne even? haha very unlikely but curious to wonder!
Hi there and welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Thank you!
There must be some family connections to Lovey Warne in Australia! I'd definitely love to know more about her. 🙂
You're taking on recruits now then?
Dave's channel is new to me, I shall give it a look,
Keep wyrdly walking!
More like he recruited me 😄
Really a great video Nic thanks so much!
Hi Nic, only just found you after seeing you on one of Dave’s Walks! Very interesting and informative Video, thank you .
If you like exploring hollow ways paths , there is a great one near Bridport, Hells Lane . Very atmospheric and magical, with many carvings in the soft rocks !
Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos 😊
All the best
Alan
Hi there! Thank you for coming to check out my channel!
I have heard of Hells Lane, I must get there somewhen soon, it does look interesting!
@@walkingthewyrd . We did the walk today, not quite the weather you had ! 😂
The woods at the end are quite magical! Something about them , feeling the past . One of our dogs , who is almost blind now , could sense things and was loving it in there 😊
All the best
Alan , Michelle and Maisie and Fred 🐕🐕
@lambrettascooter fabulous! I'm so glad you got to walk there today, and yes, a shame about the weather.
I agree with your dog about Ridley wood, it has a very strange feel to it! 🙂
Very interesting history, and a great walk video, thank you for sharing
Most welcome! Thank you for watching.
you look soooo lovelly n glasses x
Thanks Nic.(Is that your name, or an abbreviation)? I first saw you with Dave Ford and was quite intrigued. Although I'd spotted your channel once or twice previously. Interesting to see two different peoples interpretation of the same walk. But very well presented in all aspects. We've just watched several of yours in succession, so apologies for not leaving a comment on them all.
Hi there! Thanks very much for coming over from Dave's channel to check out mine. Much appreciated, and I hope you enjoy my videos!
Ha free trade sounds like a Tory got involved 😅
