I love the micro four thirds system (and my G9ii) but a big draw of the system for me is the smaller bodies! Whether you're out hiking and short on space, or trying to be incognito for street photography there's a lot to be said for having a smaller camera body In this video I cover the features I'd like to see on a potential new small M43 body, potential form factors, and also what I think wil...

Lumix G9ii Bird Photography / 3 Photos and a Downpour
มุมมอง 7808 หลายเดือนก่อน
I set off with the goal of capturing some birds (on camera of course). A sudden downpour cut my birding trip short, but instead of packing it in, I decided to head home and share my thoughts on the setup I used - the Lumix G9ii with the 100-400mm lens. This video is filmed a bit differently, I was aiming for more of a vlog style - but when I got drenched I decided to head home and give my thoug...

Are the train tracks orange in Ireland or is this just colored weird?
Funny....
I've bought my GX80 some years ago to have a "on the go"-camera complimenting my D500. In the meantime I've sold the D500 because I've almost only used the Gx80: Small, light, good usability, great lenses. I've bought an OM-1 for sports and wildlife (mainly for it's autofocus)... but still use the Gx80 most of the time. I would love to see an updated GX80 with a faster autofocus and the image stabilization power of the OM1, which is really great.
Autofocus?
I have a GX8 for Streetphotography since its release. I like it a lot. For my lowlight and wildlife photography I use a Nikon z8. Together its the perfect combination for me. Totall, agree with you
You obviously haven't tried the latest noise reduction in Adobe Camera Raw. I recently shot hummingbirds in flight at 25,600, ran the raw file through Topaz and the noise was a mess. I then tried Adobe Camera Raw and the super fine feather detail in the hummingbird wing looked more like a 400 iso image. Adobe finally woke up from their long slumber and released ACR 17.0 in October, so noise is no longer an issue with m43.
I can carry a 800mm equivalent lens very easily all day
Yous spin the cons into pros
Was just looking for a “new” m4/3 camera having won the pen-epl1 when it was (relatively) new and bought some lenses for it. Didn’t use it the past few years mainly because the very bad low light results compared to even my phone. But having stumbled upon the lenses, I thought it would be a good time to (literally) get the dust of them and use them again. Putting this one on my list
I bought canon 5D and sold Nikon 600D and sold, canon RP and sold. Only constant is EM1 mark 2. This low light shit for me is like buy a bunker for dooms day instead of a house .. MFT does all as long as you don’t want to play guitar like a drum . Every tool is specific , what we need it to act like FF FFS ( love the video btw) With all this advancement have we created any Diane Arbus Robert Capps or Henri Carter ? It’s only art form where gear has taken over
The biggest downside is they don't make small cameras anymore
I guess it’s a good time to do a respective comment on the state of m4/3 It’s still popular in many areas of the world. Panasonic sells more than OM systems and their market share is shrinking. Perhaps as I have been told the name change created a disconnect with camera shoppers. It appears Panasonic is focusing more and more with releases and shifting engineers to the L frame systems. How long will the continue to support a shrinking m 4/3 market OM system appears to be struggling. The pipeline seems dry and having sigma produce a massive FF lens with m4/3 mount and controls at a much higher price hurts. A 90mm macro lens for a niche market ? The OM-1 mark ll is just a small help with what shoot ( wildlife ). I still use the 1x body over my OM-1 as it has the things I want on it. So why not a version ll bigger buffer or/and support for express cards ? Is the the 25 megapixel sensor. It’s an amazing camera
Even though there is a GX9 with a better 20MP sensor and more features, the GX85 is incredibly popular. It’s still a very good camera and a great value. I had one, but was seduced by the slightly better GX9. I did love the GX85, though. I would definitely recommend one today.
background music is quite annoying.
I shoot Fujifilm APS-C and used to shoot 35mm film. Film had MANY limitations that we don't today: ISO 100/200/400 and 800 (grainy), so I had to use either flash, tripod, and/or low shutter speeds to get a decent picture. Enlarging to 20"x30" was grainy, even with the best techniques. I feel that today's MFT sensor cameras are probably equivalent to 35mm film or maybe even 645 medium format film with regards to pure resolution. We can debate forever on "look", so let's not go there. In short, we are SWIMMING in cheap, incredibly capable photo tech today. The limitations on "getting the perfect shot" is not in the camera anymore -- it's on the photographer.
If the film area 35mm was scene as an amateur format until film improved and medium format was promoted to be what full frame digital is today.
If you are going to shoot high megapixels you had best have a powerful computer. Anything over ten megapixels and my computer comes to a stop even with running high amounts of ram 😵💫😒🤮🤬🤬.😊
This video is very nice, surprisingly enjoyable (watched as the third one in a row after your sluggish Spanish reportage). I think you are very talented, just don't waste your talents on technicalities... this is promising! Your way of telling is excellent, very natural and involving. I'm not a native English speaker but enjoyed your pace and elaboration very much. You could have compared the mark II a bit more specifically with the G9 orig. as you owned one (like image quality, color and noise etc). The sample for the dynamic range was not proper, to illustrate the dynamic response you need a scene with a much broader scale/range between the dark and the lite. A small gripe, the rest is super. Subscribing! After all, you are Irish, aren't you :) P.S. Don't pay too much attention to views count, the real quality is mostly never reflected in it... yeah it's nice and pleasing but the most important is to strike your creative core, that will show then in the longer run.
"Irish time"... :)))
Nice, Eli! Just don't overdo those sound effects of shutter release. Way to loud. This is the good general direction you have chosen. No too many gear reviews. Just ignore the many views they generate. People who watch reviews are zombies. Give us some stories... That's the cool thing.
Rain? No need to apologize, Eli, now we believe you're in Ireland! But please... why gear review for God's sake...? ...So many do it already. You are too clever for that. Gear exists only to shoot some nice content, doesn't it? The stuff which is badly missing from this platform. Couldn't that be your path?
Not sure about micro 4/3" but on my Sony camera the use case of multi pixel plexing technology works when I have the camera sitting like a rock on the tripod or when I can shot with very fast shutter speed, otherwise single shot (if possible plus AI upsize) will be better alternative.
Olympus and Panasonic are crazy. Consumers are crying out for small cameras. They both made lovely small cameras like the Pen F and GM1 but now they don't. M43 could be hugely popular with (hip, young) amateurs . They are focusing on the wrong consumers.
Glad to see this lens remain your favourite even after upgrading to the G9 Mk II.
Nice review. I may be crazy, but even though I already have the 12-32, 12-40 f2.8, and 12-100, I still decided to pick up this 12-60 on a Black Friday used gear sale at my camera store! I think this will be my best walk-around lens, esp. on my smaller bodies. (Btw: I didn't know the G9's video focus was that bad! Your video struggled to keep focus on your eyes and lost focus completely when you turn your head.)
My phone has a 48mp sensor, I think there’s still room for m43 to grow.
I've had my GX8 for a long time, and I can't see myself ever parting with it. Despite the more modern cameras I use on my professional assignments, I always have the GX8 in my bag as a backup. It was my pro workhorse back in the day and never let me down. It's still the camera I reach for when it comes to wildlife photography (paired with the PL100-400). It's also beautiful to look at and has drawn a lot of compliments over the years.
For new photographers. Mft makes no sense. Zf with 40mm f2 or canon r6ii with 50mm f1.8 are lighter and cheaper than the closes equivalent combo of om1ii with oly 25 f1.2 Only reason to go mft for a new buyer. Buying new gear. Is it you really need over 50 fps burst or use super telephoto. For 99.9% of photographers. Mft is simply worse in every way. And this is from a mft user. Mft also is abandoned by third party. It might make sense for a person who never shoots wider than ff equivalent f4. That way you can get a discounted G9ii for like 1500 now and get some fairly cheap ones 17/20/25 1.7/1.8 that are light. This is also assuming u only shoot in great light. And the saving of like 200-300 dollars is worth all that compromise.
Aye splash proof they say. Sounds like you put that lens to the test, as did I. Like youself caught in a bit of a heavy shower, a few days later started having aperture issues, which with time got worse, to the point the lens was unusable. I believe you got lucky. A painful lesson to learn, but learn it I did. I have mostly olympus gear now and most of it weather sealed. I treat the weather sealing as a last resort, I do all in my power to make sure the camera doesn't get wet. It's not worth the risk, and the older the camera gets the less weather sealed it will be.
Had mine since 2018 - it's my (barring phone) only camera and I love it. Mainly use it for natural light portrait shoots (with the Olympus 45mm prime), street (with the Panasonic 20mm pancake) and as a hiking / general travel camera with the Olympus 14-150mm superzoom. Does everything I want it to do - even some credible stabs at Astro! Would only really even consider upgrading for weather sealing
I have the FZ1000II LOVE IT
I hear you I used to live in Galway so I know if it's 25 C it's a heat wave I now live in Liverpool which isn't much different but I lived in Berlin for 14 years and it often gets over 30C in summer, you get used to it, the sun is like the best video light so sunny places are your best friend if you shoot video imo, photography not so much I can get great shots in cloudy overcast situations with stills but with video I find that much more difficult , I own a Nikon D750 full frame camera and a Nikon D500 crop sensor and lots of Nikon glass, needless to say I also own the g9ii which I totally love for video but I prefer my Nikon's for photography, I find it strange that Panasonic marketed the g9ii as a photo first camera because I think there are a lot of cheaper Nikon or Canon cameras that take much better photos but not so good video (at least not in the g9ii price range) , the IBIS and amount of video codecs plus open gate pro res and the ability to record directly to an SSD on the g9ii make it a video first camera imo, keep your vlogs coming and thanks for sharing
Received it from Japan last week. Most fun for the money. Highly recommended
Great photos!!! Love them.
The GX80/85 is still a fantastic camera in 2024. The pictures and movies, are pin sharp and excellent. The newer cameras are not better in the results !
Good battery life, that must be a joke... It's literally half the competition
I have been using M4/3 on and off (mostly on!) since the GF-1 and I love the system. It's just a shame both Olympus and Panasonic have stopped making small cameras recently, or at least it has slowed down considerably. Let's hope we get a few new additions or updates in 2025! I would love to see a small Olympus with a monochrom only sensor! They could make it look like and call it the Olympus Trip M. 😁
I am a keen photographer who uses any camera that is available for my photography and a technician that repairs things, so when camera companies share the circuit diagram for their cmos sensors I have an idea of how it works. That said this week I took photos with my iPhone 16 in less than ideal conditions, conditions that I would have said were not good for a microfourthirds cameras and I can judge this because I own a number. They were brilliant utterly useable. So I would say that this low light stuff is a myth, and I am pretty sure that the big name cameras have more advanced light capture hardware, and that micro four thirds is using old designs for their sensors. We should focus on that, I am pretty sure Panasonic who no longer make these sensors and buy them from a competitor are more than happy for four thirds to slowly die. Having seen the newer circuit of one major supplier, I am pretty sure that this is a factor.
Agree for the joystick position, but the IBIS isn't that great. Maybe my copy only. It takes a lot of discipline to get a smooth panning, but once you've mastered it, it's gorgeous!
Inspired by this, I picked up a like new GF3 this week: am pairing it with a 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 for everyday carry. It is really fun and once I got it set up properly, has nice image quality. Should make a fun every day carry camera I think!
i have my GX85 for 7 years and still love it.
I just got mine with a pana 12-35 ASPH II and it has now completely taken over my life. what a camera. although, I find it too big (and now has become the biggest camera I own. even bigger than my FF cams. :P), but I've really been enjoying it a lot. THAT IBIS is insane. O_O . and yeah, I totally agree with the joystick location! I think it would be better if the AF/AE lock was switched. it feels like a more natural location for the thumb.
l bought this same lens a couple of month ago, from MPB, 'as new 150 euros'. l use it on my Olympus E-P5. lts my first venture into to macro photography and must say I'm very pleased with the lens. l us a couple of Godox Litemons for illumination when necessary... Thanks for your review..
Thanks for the review, I've had this lens a few days and think you've summed it up well. What's the white grip you're using on the EM5?
E-m1 ii is what I want.
I still have mine in 2024, it works for me and produces nice images. Thanks for the upload 👍
Affinity Photo maybe worth a test? I got the V1 and since I'll restart my amateur hobbyist photographer career, I'm in the market for a non Adobe , non subscription good app
Gateway drug to micro four thirds is the Nikon 1 system. Using the Nikon 1 V3 opened my eyes to the use cases for smaller cameras that have small sensors and small lenses. The only thing driving me away from the V3 right now is that it's the last of the line, 95% of the lenses are auto-focus only, and you can't use off camera flash with it.
No, FF is popular because of the lens selection and price, medium format is even more expensive and has a short list of lens options, FF has the largest lens selection, and it's cheaper than medium format while still having the largest sensor affordable to most. I shoot FF and MFT for different purposes, yes, MFT is my go-to format for about 90%, but for indoor sports, for instance, I'll use the FF and the 70-200 f/2.8 and similar lenses, MFT has issues providing equivalent lenses for fast-moving subjects in low light, the same goes for APS-C, although you can use FF lenses on APS-C, but then you lose the advantage of APS-C since you are essentially cropping the lenses and losing sharpness.
"Video Cropping", might be because of a setting. You can choose which mode gets to be the default. Go to menu/set --> Custom (1 wrench with C) --> Rec Area and choose movie (icon) or camera (icon). I have 2 GX-8s that I have almost worn out. They were used to make videos until recently, when they were replaced by GH5 ii and retired to do photos. Oh, and Panasonic still has a user manual in .pdf online. It's scary detailed / long.
