    Okay I do have a comment. I bought an Olympus E-PM1 (including flash,) for $65.00 (USD) and a 7-Artisans UFO lens for $55.00. The UFO lens has true focusing, with a distance scale, and a constant f/6.3 aperture. It is 18 mm compared to the Olympus lens's 15 mm. But it is very similar to the lens that you are using.
    As for the camera, the image stablization at this price is a great feature to have. The rear screen is big at 3 inches. I can shut off the shutter sound if I want. I can also adjust the screen brightness on a bright summer's day.
    All in all a $120 investment that I can carry around with me every day.
    Thanks for the video. It inspired me to purchase my cheap kit. I am really enjoying it!

    I goot a GF3 with a 14mm pancake lens just for the lens (the whole thing was about $45 USD at the time) but it used the same battery as my GX7 (which was a current model and my travel camera) so ended up keeping the camera as my "spare" travel camera spent 5 months traveling through Honk Kong and Japan and later 5 months traveling through Europe - genuinely surprised how often I used the GF3 -and some of the shots with this camera were my favourites (just walking around places like Mongkok, Osaka, and London with the GF3 +14mm in my pocket with the GX7 and other lenses left in my room) and even occasionally use it now (as it still uses the same battery as my new GX9 travel camera)

    Great idea for my GF3 languishing in my camera drawer! I had the 9mm body cap and found it creatively fishy. The combination of extreme close up and wide angle captured a different perspective. My current favorite camera is the Lumix LX7 with a 24-90mm Leica lens f1.4/2.3. It's tiny (10 ounces/300 g). With Izoom, it shoots jpg/raw 24-180! Blown away! Great job on your video. As a first time viewer on your channel, I liked what I saw and subscribed. Keep up the good work and enjoy that Irish sunshine! ☔ 👍🙂

    I got a GF2 (£60, €69.50) and a 25mm f1.7 (£70, €81) a year ago. I cannot describe what a good purchase it was. I have gotten some beautiful pics on it, and this camera has really gotten me into photography. The lens' bokeh is also great, which really sets it apart from a phone, same with the ergonomics of a camera. Any time over a phone. I hate using my phone for photography, the colours are bad, and that's not something you notice until you use a good camera. Yes, it's bad at low light, but if you bring a tripod, it's great for long exposures. I haven't had the opportunity to try any new camera, but the autofocus is WAY better than my phone, it'll focus reliably in 1 second as long as there is light. Another nice thing is the ability to shoot at 1/4000 sec shutter, which really freezes time, and gets a great pic no matter how much you move.
    Long story short, don't be afraid to get an old 4/3 body, with a used 4/3 lens!

    • @Elifarnhill
      @Elifarnhill  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have that lens and it's brilliant!
      If I use my phone it's on the very rare occasion I don't have my camera with me and see something great, since recording this video Ive paired the GF3 with a 20mm f1.7 which fits in a coat pocket, which makes a great phone replacement

  • @MrShiftyWizard
    @MrShiftyWizard 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good buy on that 12-32. My first micro 4/3 camera was a GX7, got it in 2014 with the 20mm f1.7 pancake and there was a promotion for a free 12-32 as well, so I have the metal version. Other than having to stick the outer barrel back on with double sided tape (that version had an issue with the glue) it's been a great, compact, versatile lens, only retired now due to getting olympus 12-40 f2.8. But now my son uses the gx7 and the 12-32 and loves it.

    • @Elifarnhill
      @Elifarnhill  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was such a good deal! I'd say it pairs very well with the GX7, I'm glad your son loves it!
      I havn't had much chance to test it recently, the weather hasn't been ideal for using non weather sealed gear, but I'm hoping in the next few weeks I'll be able to go out and test it properly!

    You asked what we thought, so I’ll tell you: your images are great. I’m no pixel peeper. I have been looking for something pocketable and my E-M10iv isn’t. I miss an EVF when it’s sunny, which is what’s kept me from looking into the older m43 bodies.12MP is plenty, I used a Fuji X10 with a 12MP sensor only 1/4 the size of a m43 sensor and at lower ISOs it was no problem printing at 16x20,so a 12MP m43 sensor is fine. I have the 9mm body cap and am very pleased with it. Maybe it’s time to get over my EVF-phobia and pick up something like this. Thx for the video.

    I thoroughly enjoy watching your TH-cam presentations. I learn something with every edition. I am a long term Nikon user, mostly full frame, but recently purchased a Lumix G9 at a decent price, because the G9II was in the batter's box (and that was too much to spend for a somewhat experimental try at micro four thirds). I also bought a 45mm Macro-Elmerit 2.8 lens. Great fun to use; still learning how to set the best (for me) of the nearly unlimited focus options. I won't be purchasing your "Cheapest Micro Four Thirds Setup" but will look more seriously at the used lens market. You have my attention; please keep posting.

    Love MPB....I have SERIOUS used gear GAS.
    Buying old gear is the way to go. The stuff developed in the last 5-10 years takes amazing pictures.
    Buy new gear if you are chasing the latest tech and the money is no issue to you: highest megapixels, fastest frame rates, largest sensor, global shutter, etc. (not my thing)

    The power of good technique and knowledge of editing software and camera set ups! In the end, I guess these other factors compensate for the not-stellar f/8 lens. I'd imagine with any of the pancakes you mention (I own the 14mm f/2.5 and 20mm f/1.7, and they are gems - and once owned that 12-32) you will get really decent results.

    Hey, if you want to mess around with your lighting setup, having a rim light goes a long way. It can be acheived with something as simple as one of those desk lamps with the bendy tube on them so you can direct the light. Just have that set just out of view illuminating you from behind on the opposite side from your key light. Usually a contrasting tone from the key works, it looks like the key light you're using is a cooler color so a warm bulb in the lamp as a rim light would help. I see these "sunset" projectors at my local dollar store, super cheap, but they can also be used to either provide the rim light or illuminate the space behind you with a colored circle on a darkened wall, they're basically a tiny cheap spotlight.

    Greetings from Australia where it is the middle of summer ;-) Really enjoyed the video, your delivery is excellent. The lighting could maybe 'pop' a little more but was quite ok as is, the audio is great. I have the GF1 which I use with the 20mm and a cheap chinese 40mm ovf mounted on the hotshoe, local light can sometimes overwhelm the rear screen. It's a fun little occasional pocket cam. I had some super sharp results from my 12-32 but eventually got frustrated with a zoom that didn't really zoom much, which says more about me than the lens as it's terrific. The 12-60 is a super piece of kit though I've settled on a short fast prime and the 35-100 as my 'kit'. I wouldn't bother with that little 15mm on my EM5, I'd take a more capable lens on the bigger body. I could ramble on (boring). Thanks for posting, go well.

      I've found myself wanting a bit more zoom when I've been messing with the 12-32, but I think that might be because I'm so used to the 12-60 - which really is a great lens, the fact it's weather sealed is a great help here!

    The smaller old Panasonic m43 cameras still have a bit of a following because if the minor tweaks that were made between them- so depending onbwhether you specifically want the smallest interchangeable lens mft camera, the smallest mft with integral flash/integral evf/articulated screen etc, you might want a GM1/GM5/GX1, and even at the newer end one might prefer a GX8 or GX7 to a GX9 for 'form factor reasons', whereas the straight 'G' models are the flagships that became less desirable the moment that the next model comes out. Which is long-winded way of saying I wouldn't be surprised if you could find (for example) a G3 or G5 with the 14-42mm kit zoom for even less on Facebook marketplace or non-photographic secondhand site.

    I have the 12-32 and it’s a lovely sharp little lens ideal for an EDC, some people do prefer the Oly 14-42 pancake power zoom, while the image is nice (my wife owns this lens) the ribbon on the power zoom is unreliable and often snaps.
    I picked up a GF9 with kit lens for about 6000php (100EUR) a couple of years ago but the rear command dial became unreliable. Overall for smaller MFT cameras I think the Pen Lite series from Olympus are better build quality than the GF range however having used every kit lens pretty much in MFT I think overall Lumix kit lenses are equal or better than their Oly counterparts

    • @chrishowell5718
      @chrishowell5718 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely, the Panny GF range was pretty squarely aimed at being the budget plastic-body rangefinder-style body (GX the premium rangefinder style), whereas the Oly EPLs have a more luxury/ premium target market.

    9:45 I'm a sucker for small MFT bodies for street photography here in NYC. But even amid the high urban street noise I'd prefer an silent (electronic) shutter option. Looking at older MFT bodies as they come up at MPB I'm continually suprised at how recent they have to be in order to have a fully electronic shutter in photo mode, as opposed to video mode where it is a requirement. Even my beloved Olympus Pen E-P5 makes a distinct (but gorgeous!) shutter sound in it's anti-shutter-shock mode. And my more recent and tinier E-PL7 behaves the same way. Any camera marketed for street photography should have a fully silent mode. BTW I have all the gear described in this video and agree with all of your judgements, especially with photo-gear limitations being the mother of artistic invention.

    • @Elifarnhill
      @Elifarnhill  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree, electronic shutter is essential for street photography - I'll be keeping the GF3 as a pocket camera paired with either the 20mm F1.7 or the 12-32 but sticking to my EM5ii for street photography

    The 12-32 is a little gem Eli. Very light and portable, a very decent range and really nice image quality. You did very well to find such a nice copy for that price!
    Little question for you. In a recent video you mentioned (rightly) high iso/low light noise as one of the potential downsides of m43. I recently ran a trial copy of Pure Raw 3 from DxO over my older Olympus raw files and I was stunned at the results. Actually staggered. Also the details that it could pull out. Was wondering do you also use a denoising software? Cheers 🍻

    • @Elifarnhill
      @Elifarnhill  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really is! And the stabilisation is surprisingly good too
      I use 2 main denoising options: The first is just the ai denoise in lightroom it works very well but I find if there's people in the image they can look a bit like plastic, very smooth and shiny
      The second is Topaz photo ai, I'd use that if I'm shooting at an extreme iso (like 12800) and I find that it handles images with people a bit better
      Topaz shocked me the first time I used it, I had some images I took at a dark football game at 12800 iso which were honestly underexposed, but it managed to create a great end result!

    • @mike_burke
      @mike_burke 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Elifarnhill Yes! Forgot to mention the stabilisation…I adore my little 12-32 😀
      Adobe’s new denoise is actually pretty good, certainly for ‘free’ (if you already sub as I do). Only I find it a little slow, even on an M1 Mac. What I like about DxO, just as much as the NR, is the demosaicing just looks really nice, better than Lr imo. But yeah, it costs €129 (too much imo). I think I might hold off for a sale, but I am quite impressed. Cheers!
