The IMPORTANCE of HAIR SYMBOLISM within characters

Absurd Art Contest Drama │ART COMMENTARY
I have a character Hilda in one of my books who uses karate and daggers to fight while her brother Jal also knows karate but he gets possessed by the main villain and begins using swords. The main villain is a mage. Israr uses a bow because he hates being near people while his sister Jun is a healer who hates fighting. Awen is a little girl who uses music to control the wind and can turn into a dragon. And Aqua is another kid who can control water and turn into a see dragon
Your OCs sound pretty interesting in the way that they fight and their fighting style! There's a real mix of a magic system (the music control) and weapons like swords!
I always loved Pocahontas
I'm glad! I've had a theory that neurodivergent prefer movies like pocahontas tbh
My teachers where bad until I told them that I was autistic then they took the extra time to help me my freshman science, teacher even made an alternative assignment for me to do because I physically was unable of comprehending word searches.
I think that's why early diagnosis is so important, some of my friends and family were able to get extra time on their assignments and tests just because they mentioned they had autism/schizophrenia/adhd. I should've done that
I have a character Dealla who has long hair that she wears in a braid but she cuts it so that she can pretend to be her brother, and die in his place. Her brother Darius intern grows out his hair and wears it in a braid to remember her
Wait does she actually die in his place? This story is super interesting, wait
@ yes, her brother is a king during a revolution and they are twins so she takes his place so that he can live since he’s the only person left alive that she loves
I long for MySims to make a comeback! Have a bunch of ideas for new games
PLEASE PLEASE PLSEASE tell me all of them!
@ Theater (where you and characters get to put on plays) Possibly more Mystery games (like bring back Agents 2 or some completely different like Scooby-Doo-esque) Maybe some non story-driven games like Party once in a while Of course story driven games as well Safari Music-themed (like a game where you creates bands 🎶!) Maybe a game where you can make your restaurant, café, or other kind of food place
This topic was interesting and I like your analysis on it, but I feel like a lot of people have to understand that nobody in this world is good or bad. We’re just morally gray. We are just humans trying to live our lives the best way we can make every day a little more tolerable than the last humans fuck up and make mistakes really shitty mistakes, but that doesn’t automatically make them a bad person that just makes them heavily shitty and there is no justification for heavily shitty actions to be honest, but not everybody in this world is good as well
Yeah, i pretty much agree with you there!
I’m writing a book where a character has a redemption arc! I love this video, great tips that I will definitely be applying to my character’s redemption. The bad thing she does is bullying, and overall being a sort of horrible person because she hates herself, and then hates on others. But she try’s. At least when her best friend is gone, because shes the real jerk. Like a murderer kind of jerk. She’s manipulative, insane, and knows what she is doing is wrong, but doesn’t care because it’s for the greater good. She eventually dies in an epic fight, where the character with a redemption will decide to either stand with murder friend or the other group of people she bullied. She decides to stand with her other friends. There’s only one person in that group who is willing to help her grow better and not be a jerk. Idk what I just wrote wait- I have more to that story like a lot- but also I really love this video. Thanks for the tips again have a nice day :D
Omg I'm glad you liked the video XD and omg omg the lore runs deep with this redemption arc, I can tell you're trying to summarize for the sake of it being in the comment section, but this is super interesting! Usually redeemed characters are still alive or have already died, so it's so intriguing to have one that actually dies midway through the story!
@ not midway, actually near the end, and she’s the bad one who doesn’t get redeemed. I’m sorry, this was very hard to read 😅 thanks for replying and have a nice day
(Weird, seems like my original comment didn't go through. Or at least, it's not showing up in the comments. It's happened to me before, so i took precaution to copy and paste. Apologies if this shows up twice in your inbox). I came here from your vid about redemption arcs, wanting to say "Oh wow, the videos are following each other up quick!" before realizing that i hadn't actually checked your channel page to see how much time passed between videos. So now i'm here. This is a subject i've been thinking a LOT about, but i think i need to take some steps away from it for a while to focus on non-combat things. But i do want to share some of my own characters and the way they fight. And the rules of fighting within their worlds. Starting off with Fulkrost again! The main world Fulkrost resides in, an Eldritch monster land known as (the) Nodrogont, is one where i want to be fairly strict in terms of magic: There are magical tools and weapons, but they need appropriate skill to properly use. Or they work in very specific ways. Think of the difference between a magic wand that can conjure fireballs directly, versus Scaramouche's flute (Samurai Jack) that made his sword fly and fight on its own. Until the flute or sword broke. Fulkrost is a pretty big and strong guy. His fighting style would be fairly basic and pragmatic: kickboxing, perhaps with some elbows. Now here's where his weapons come into play: A magical gauntlet that immediately absorbs force, and an axe with a head shaped like a crescent moon with a spike in the middle. Or a stylized number 3. It's more of a Dane axe-type thing. It's not massively heavy. More manouverable than most people may think. At the time i wanted to defy having a protagonist with a sword or staff, and thus give him a weapon usually associated with dumb brutes and pure force. The idea was that Fulkrost can, with the palm of the gauntlet, absorb and store any force or energy. This he can release back from his handpalm, OR redirect into his axe. The axe will essentially swing itself, then: He needs to direct where it will land. Because he can only catch energy with the palm of his gauntlet, it's never guaranteed he will catch an incoming blow in time. Since then, i've imagined some moves where he will put such force in the axe, that he gets swung forward himself, making saltos like the Flipsaw move from Darksiders. Or simply a Stinger/Harpoon Tackle/Piercing Lunge with the force. (these are terms from Character Action games: It's a dash where a big blade is pointed forward. It's a move that is damaging while covering ground. Stinger is the name in Devil May Cry, Harpoon Tackle is the name in Darksiders and Piercing Lunge is the name in Soulstice. Different names, same thing). Quarterstaff moves and hooking moves have been added to his arsenal throughout the years, as well as the shape of his axe's head being transformative: the top spike can point the other way, giving more of a recurve shape. In this state, the axe can jab/stab upwards a bit more efficiently. Like a naginata, or guandao, or glaive. Buuut since then, i've also given him a brass-colored spiked mace. (the head is like a hexagonal tube). Like the axe, Fulkrost is less brutish and more manouverable than one may suspect. But a mace is one of the most simple, yet most effective weapons to use too. It's shorter than the axe, but has more reach than the gauntlet, and there's no worrying about edge alignment. Now it's on to actually envisioning and drawing fighting scenes. There's no dance without good dance partners. So, videos like these will help in setting up the scuffles. ----------------------------------------- FOR SOME OTHER FOLKS that fight: - A purple skeleton and a big cricket named Slim & Jim. They're 90's/2000s bros that want to be rappers. Their world's a lot more cartoonish, guns are kept at a minimum (with energy instead of deadly bullets) and i use the world partially as an excuse to show off lesser-known weapons. Like the African Takoba and the Turkish Shamshir. Slim & Jim keep it fairly simple. Two bars that can be put together to form a longer staff. Sometimes a gun or two. Slim's more of an all-rounder, Jim is very mobile with a LOT of force in his legs. Thanks to being a cricket. But he's not as resilient as Slim. During battle, i imagine them to throw the weapons back-and-forth to each other a lot. Leading to situations such as - one of them has both sticks - one of them has the staff - either one has a stick Personality-wise, Slim is more emotional and in-the-moment. Jim is more perceptive and mindful, but is much slower to let go of grudges. Jim is better at poetry and songwriting, Slim is better at instruments. They work fine on their own, but really work as a unit when together. One of their friends is a leaf person named Teri. They fight with a three-section staff, because... they thought it was a cool thing to learn. Good for keeping up condition too. Teri's quite technically adept with this weapon, definitely no master, and doesn't really seek to be a master anyway. They simply want to make their way through life. But with something this unusual, they've got more experience than most. Noelle/Nemikro is a young woman of Dutch/Polynesian descent. (or at least, the equivalent in her world). She has a magical skull friend named Folekroth and in her story, starts to learn martial arts. Typically she fights with kickboxing and a tonfa (or two). Is smaller than most people or creatures she encounters. Martial arts are prominent in her story. Folekroth is a powerful element, in that Noelle is his "Chosen one". Throughout the ages he sought out people that could use his power, but there is a catch: Using his power boosts your own metabolism. Therefore, he was subjected to seeking out more corpulent folks to "more effectively" use his powers. Until one day he said "Nope, i'm just gonna look up someone that seems interesting". Folekroth can't directly dictate the "best" way to use his power, but does encourage Noelle to first develop her own capacities: increase her speed and stamina, strengthen her body and will, that kind of stuff. Folekroth doesn't want her to exclusively rely on him. But when she does, she tends to go for animal transformations. Mainly a goat, a snake, perhaps a bat. Partial transformations are less taxing because the general human shape is kept. Stuff like growing a second set of arms, turning to stone (like Kevin E. Levin from the second Ben 10 series) or becoming a sand creature. Still, she can risk starving to death through overuse, or ending up stuck if she doesn't have enough energy to turn back. Her job as a kind-of-mercenary-kind-of-general-assistant isn't super stable either. Especially amongst the competition. Needs to budget her meals. Like with Fulkrost, i need to do a lot more thinking about opponents and how fights would go. I think Jackie Chan Adventures will be my main example to take inspiration from. Similar thing going on with emphasis on martial arts, but with a magic element that has clear rules and limits. If you read this all through, thank you for doing so. hope you found the tales fun and interesting. Wish you good luck and fun on future videos!
Omg yeah, I didn't receive the first message, so this is my first time seeing it! But omg this by far the most detailed, longest comment I recieved XDDDD I did read it and it was very intriguing, I remember you cause I remember Fulkrost, that name is super unique! Anyways I like Fulkrost's fighting style of both kickboxing and elbows! I feel like characters who are physically strong benefit the most from physical combat such as that! and combined with a magical system, it makes him OP in a good way. I didn't go too much in debt about magic systems in this video or the next one, but when it comes to part 3, I'll probably speak more about it! I've watched more cartoons with magic systems since then lmao Also, I love the concept of Slim and Jim and how they essentially use teamwork to fight! I don't know if this is a good reference, but in Soul Eater Not (even if this anime is hated), Both Anya and Meme share a weapon while fighting! Idk if I've seen it anywhere else, so that's why I'm excited for Slim and Jim! Also, also, Teri and Noelle, they sound pretty cool as well! One is learning new skills, and the other is training! For Noelle, I feel like martial arts and being able to transform into animals since many martial arts moves are based on animals! Like how Shaolin Kung Fu has Five Animal Style: dragon, tiger, crane, leopard, and snake Anyways, your OCs are pretty cool XD thanks for watching the video and such!!
@@Rosemadi.artist I like to talk a lot about my stories or get *very* detailed, it was initially meant to be longer with describing a character named Innittix, an edgy rubberhose cartoon creature with spikes on her body and a giant meat cleaver. Got burned before by a big message not being sent through, so I TOOK PRECAUTIONS and the contents of your cookie jar too :P Glad you find it interesting, and thank you for the compliment on Fulkrost's name! Definitely. I had a long period of wanting to look into martial arts and weapons, and consensus seems to be that kickboxing and muay thai are some of the most efficient and hard-hitting fighting styles out there. Trouble is now, to balance "What is effective in real life" vs "what will be cool to see in a fight". For example, Sagat from Street Fighter. He's BIG, clearly muscled and has a lot of reach. But someone as freaky like A.K.I, as weird as Dhalsim and even as cartoony as Blanka, have just as cool a place in the world as a unique and dangerous fighter. Wish you a lot of fun on the magic system video! Stuff like that can get very deep and there's a lot to draw from. Stuff like Summoner 2 for example, which if i remember correctly, has the world consist of writing. Some of the "letters" can be seen during the loading screen: They're three-dimensional figures that keep turning. As I understand it, he protagonist can transform into different creatures by... reaching out to the "Word" that is her, turning or adding one of those letters, and that turns her into a creature of Eye, Blood, Wood or Sand (the four elements of that world). Reminds me of an Italian Mickey Mouse comic i once read, I believe called The World Yet To Come. There was a long-lasting scientific project that figured out everything in the universe consists of a particular formula. They found technology to alter something's formula, which they wanted to use to terraform Earth into a healthier place. But the World Formula is an *incredibly* complex thing to calculate, so the project fell into disuse and was forgotten. In any case, thank you very much for that Soul Eater reference! Slim & Jim's style was inspired by two background character from the cartoon Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. If you look up the ship fight scene from the beginning, you'll see them as they hold a long stick to pole-vault and carry each other over onto the enemy ship. I'll have to look up Tanya and Meme to see how their weapon and teamwork plays out. Thank you again for making me aware of that! Hadn't considered the Animal Kung Fu angle for Noelle, actually, but i see what you mean! The animal transformations can open up the doors for fun situations, like... being a spy in a petting zoo or a reptile house. I believe there's a martial art from Myanmar called Bando that "codes" particular styles of attack by referring to animal names. May be worth looking into. Thank *you* again for reading it all through, and for the reply :)
Pink diamond is truley a child growing up, or trying to. She was a kid throwing tantrums, not really disecting the good and bad yet. She possibly came out overcooked, leading to the diamonds not letting her take on the responsibilities she was literally born to do: Lead. After begging, she gets a colony, but white fully expects her to fail, and to rub it in her face. That's what the "did you get it all out of your system?" Talk was. Pink managed to find a way to do what she was programmed to do in a different way. But she also did it without the support of her family, so I imagine that could have played a part in her bad desicions, kind of like a sheltered kid being thrust into the real world. She was never given the resources to even practice leadership because no one expected her to.
Yeah truly trial by fire with Pink 😬
I would LOVE to see an attempted and failed redemption. Like, characters tried to help the big bad go good, but the bad just couldn't. But don't make it feel like a surefire thing like chloe in miraculous to just pull the rug... huh. That might actually be hard to pull off... I mean, the collector kind of did in the finale with belos.
Omg im sure it exists somewhere out there, I just can't remember exactly who. I mean the closest I can think of is when Katara tried to help Zuko and he relapsed back into bad before being good again 😭😭 the collectors story was interesting tbh, I wish we knew more about him
Batman: The Animated Series has so many great examples of failed redemption~ From The Penguin in Birds of a Feather to The Riddler in Riddler's Reform, to even Catwoman! Yes, that show has many, many examples of failed redemption... which makes the very few episodes where true redemption does happen (It's Never Too Late, Double Talk) so much more special
When I saw the title for this video, I KNEW you were gonna be talking about Varian. I’m sorry the brainrot is consuming me…… but his redemption arc is SO GOOD AUUGHHHH!!! I have so many Thoughts about him. ANYWAYS!!!! Me and my friends recently wrote a play that we are trying to make a prequel, sequel, AND rewrite for. (The directors messed everything up rippp) and there’s this one character who KILLS A 14 YEAR OLD’S MOTHER. He’s so silly tho like lil bro was just stuck in an apocalypse and had to dimension hop.. like a savior complex is just a side effect!! :( another character, the one I wrote and played, has kind of a comedic relief to villain to redemption arc. I’m being so fr when I say I stole his personality from Varian, Hyde from the glass scientists, and GIR from invader zim. I can’t stop the brainrot OH LU GODDDDDNDJMCNC!!!
Omg am I becoming that predictable that he's not even on the thumbnail but it's obvious I was gonna bring up varian 😭😭😭😭 AND OMG YOUR CHARACTERS SOUND SO CHAOTIC BUT CHAOTIC IN THE GOOD WAY
also im making another message cause the original got cut off, but anyways i like the idea of having a comedic relief to the villian thats so fun 😭😭💕💕

My mc of my video game project has bedhead but ties it all up to stay out of her face. She’s in a survival horror game, she’s only got time for dry shampoo and shooting demons in the face 😂 The allegory of the entire game (bahaha I can spoiler since this is a lurker account) is embracing your hair going grey. She doesn’t “attain her true powers” until she accepts that she’s aging, along with coming to terms with other things all at once, just like the chaos of real life 🤭 I just think that message should be there for us girlies getting older, and you can still be ENTIRELY YOURSELF otherwise.
Omg that's so important, letting your hair go grey! Bojack is one of those characters who's maturity is shown through his hair as it goes from black to grey. And also Lilith from the owl house lets her hair have a grey streak as well overtime! Anyways your game sounds great like there's a lot of thought put into it!
I’m gonna gush about my current hyperfixation because there’s one character in that series who has a hairstyle change from the first game to the second. (Well, more than just a hairstyle change, but the hair is what’s important right now.) In the first game, she’s young and peppy, wearing a ponytail to help showcase her young and athletic personality. In the second game, she’s much more mature, her hair is shorter, and it’s very VERY straight. What’s funny is that this also represents her “lack of personality” in the second game, and how she’s not as energetic as she once was. She’s more “generic”, but that’s simply because she’s older. Idk I just found it fun- (Also the artist for the game made a mock-up for what she would look like in a third game if they ever made one and her hair is like- SUPER fancy, which probably represents her becoming a grown woman)
Not you gatekeeping the game 😭😭😭What is it called it sounds super interesting! But yeah, these are really good uses of hair symbolism!!! The kind that demonstrates growth!
@ it’s a forgotten Nintendo war game on the GameCube made in 2005 with a sequel on the Wii… Kinda the reason I didn’t elaborate on what the game was XD I have some WEIRD hyperfixations…
It's okay, my hyperfixation is on a wii game that hasn't made a new entry in 14 years 😭😭I then proceeded to lose my mind when it was ported to the switch for $40
@ That is so real tbh
YESS I was just thinking about your hair symbolism video when this popped up!! I think it's a sign that I should've subbed ages agoo <3 Shoutout to messy redemption arcs also! Shoutout to arcs where they backslide into old habits, they fuck up, and... just keep going. Shoutout to arcs where progress is nonlinear but **they keep trying anyways**.
Omg yay welcome back and thanks for the sub 😭💕But yes a massive shout out to all of these types of characters and may their growth come eventually!
While my OCs do have an established canon, I just like to draw them in silly scenarios or imagine them running around doing things outside of their story(ies).
Yeah it's fun to have those! I did that with my OCs in my visual novel, lmao pure chaos and nonsense!
8:15 "Wow! These are great!" "Girl, what do you think you're doin???"
BAHAHAHAHA!! 😭😭😭honestly put those jeans DOWN!
Something I've seen that not many others mention is that we both see Iroh and Rose with reverse character development. We see their character development stripped away through flashbacks and lore hints, eventually leading to their farthest point from where they are at the beginning of the show. The difference is that Iroh has foreword character development, too. Each mention of who he used to be is contrasted with how far he's come, showing that he's bettered as a person. Since Rose is gone, we don't get that, we're just shown how bad she was and not how far she went away from that.
Yeah there's so much ambiguity when it comes to how Pink feels about her past! We know that Iroh hates his path, and often spoke to other characters about how much he wanted to distance himself from that. But when it comes to pink. She's G O N EEEEE!! Know one really knows what she thought about it, and ofc she kept silent on the matter too.
Wasn't ready for the Rose Quartz jumpscare... I respect Rebecca for managing to write someone so complex in a kids show though. Frankly that goes for most of the characters though.
Honestly, and a complex woman nonetheless!!!!
RAHHHH VARIAN MENTION 😱😰😫
I'LL MAKE YOU PROUDDDD
HE IS REAL!!! LOOK AT HIM GO!!!
Really, With That, I Like to Bring in Another Character that is Actually Terrible Enough Not to Deserve Any Sort of Redemption. And That is Actually Sheryl Godspeed from Final Space. And, Really, Throughout There, She Not Only Abandoned her Own Son Since his Father's Demise. But, Also: -Tried to Harm and Kill Him Multiple Times -Nearly Sold Him to a Psychopath in a Tellitubbies Suit -Nearly Tried to Kill Her Son's Own Lover Out if Spite -PUT A GLOCK IN HIS HEAD -NEARLY COMMITTED GENOCIDE TO THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE......For One Guy...... Also, Even when she Actually Tried to Have her Own Redemption Prior to Season 3, Not Only was it Rushed. But, She Barely did Anything to Help Make Up for Things Such as: -Barely Had Any Moments With her Son -Barely Gave Any Advice to her Son with his Relationship -Barely Even Defended Him from his Friend Ash from Blaming Him for One of Their Friends' Demise. Really, She was Still Just a Terrible Person. Even Before she Met her Love John, She Actually Did Terrible Things Since she Works For an Organization. And Even After her Lover's Demise. So, Really......
OOOh I really need to watch Final Space, I never knew that all of that was going on, but Sheryl sounds awful omg
@Rosemadi.artist She Definitely Is. Really, Her Actions are Even Inexcusable......Really......
Nice. Really Nice.
Many many thanks!!
Is bad that I want my foils to be later on best friends inspired of Cassandra and Eugene’s dynamic.
not bad at all! Stealing from other artists is an art in itself! I've stolen so much from Tangled the series haha
I know it has barely anything to do with the video but yeah 10:18 The universe hated this child. I understand what he did was wrong but jeez he had a point about the rocks. Ngl I thought Fredrick was going to be the main villain of season 1….
The butterfly effect in its purest form. He started out wanting to save corona just to get arrested by corona omg
@ also really sad
this video makes me want to get a dq blizzard and watch spongebob
The main take aways I assure you
"Give your character a flaw, a normal flaw that isn't genocide or war crimes" Me: Laughs in Dalinar Kholin
That guy fits into the next section 😭😭😭 he's not allotted the redemption just the reverse redemption
this video ended up remembering me of a oc i have that literally went to a hospice and two years later returned to society. He doesn't remember what he did to get there and the people around town just isolate him because he's "crazy" (btw he's besties with the daughter of one of the most influentials guys in town)
OOOO your OC sounds interesting, omg I feel so bad for their circumstance though
@Rosemadi.artist me too,but he's fine tho (i hope)
@Jubscreuda_UwU.cookie that's so ominous omg
i am one of the five tts fans (obviously look at my pfp lmao) but yeah also a lot of people ship cassandra with rapunzel so they're sort of in romantic competition as well, at least in the fandom's eyes. (I think it was confirmed that cass was in love with raps, and I mean, obviously, but rapunzel reciprocating those feelings is just speculation.) personally I only ship it as an unrequited love thing, because new dream is so wholesome and wonderful, but for all the cassunzel shippers, I totally get it, I just think eugene is the superior love interest.
Yep that's so true! The chemistry between Raps and Cass is undeniable to anyone with eyes. The way raps would continuously reject Eugene's proposals, and how many solo adventures she had with Cass. I think some of the storyboard artists shipped Raps and Cass, so it's just evident with the shots too! I mean people want to push the sister angle, but lol there was something else there too. But yeah the original Tangled movie is enough source alone to prove Eugene and Raps were meant for eachother.
I'd like to say (Regarding Pink Diamond) that, towards the recent parts of her arc, it felt like she just became a plot device to blame everything on since she's not around to do anything about it.
I know this comment isn't meant to be funny but I laughed anyways 😭😭 you're right, especially when it came to spinels lore
@Rosemadi.artist TRUST, I'd cackle too. But lemme cook for a sec- PEARL forgot Spinel too and Spinel's lack of a brain is what caused her to stand STILL for 6000 years like??? I'd give it one year and peace out
NAWRRR cause spinel was so locked in 😭😭 in it to win it, i would've bounced too and im sure Pink thought that too. I wonder what year she realized she was being cucked but stuck by hoping pink would come back with a gold medal
@@Rosemadi.artist LOL FR LIKE...GIRL LETS BFFR 👏😂
@@ravenr0cksI had a fan theory that gems physically can’t ignore their diamond, so Spinel couldn’t move
the way i was jumpscared by your mention of varian omg I was pretty sure I was the last surviving member of the tangled fandom 😭
also your moon cass opinion is not a very hot take from what I've seen, although upon rewatch I think it's a fairly solid arc that gave us some banger songs. mostly varian was robbed of his pitched spinoff show and also season 1 screen time 😤
Tangled the series fans are few but very passionate 😭😭😭 omg that's so true! We need more people from that universe traumatized or vengeful, so we can get some more good music!!!! I listen to nothing left to lose everyday like no joke! Anyways I don't hate Cassandra's arc and I kinda like how she flip flops from good to bad lmao but yeah I just like varians arc a tad bit more x'DD
Oh oh yeah! We were 100% robbed from the varian show, we've been robbed from so much varian content and lore 😭😭
I will never forget how we could’ve had vat7k. ALSO YR PFP IS SO REAL OMG 😭
I think what separates a good redemption arc from a bad redemption arc is three things: 1: Having the person called out for the bad actions, 2: Having the person either start the story regretting their actions or come to regret their actions and want to change, and 3: Having the person actually repent and fully make up for their actions. I think why redemption arcs can be so bad is the fact in a lot of cases they either just get away with it because they did one good thing that might not even collate to their wrongdoing, or they have a sad backstory and that's used as an excuse for their actions and they just get forgiven immediately. In my opinion, to make a good redemption arc you need to put any sad backstory aside (though there are exceptions), call out the character for their terrible actions, make the character regret their actions and want to be better, and have them actually repent and repay for what they've done in the past, proving to the characters and the audience that they have fully changed. It feels like some redemption arcs just feel hollow and makes the audience question why they wouldn't just go back to doing bad things, and makes the audience think the characters are stupid for trusting them. I just wanted to add my two senses to this conversation, I ramble a lot!
Omfg yessssss! I forgot about that cringe aspect of some characters using their sob story as a reason they're bad 😭😭😭 it's so terrible cause usually their crimes are worse than their sad story. Anyways these are all good points for a good redemption!!!
“Your apology should be as loud as your disrespect was.” -a random google image my chorus teacher’s wall, right beside Homer Simpson.
I have 5 ocs who have really long hair but they have different hair styles this symbolism means even if there personalities are different they still have a very tigh bond and look out for each other
That's super cool to have with OCS! Hair that differs but still unifies!
I must admit, it's quite captivating to watch the way you draw plus animate at the background! It looks super cool! Along with your view on Pink Diamond, since, Pink Diamond just beats down a lot by pretty much everyone. As someone who extremely loves flawed characters, it kind of sucks sometimes. I do have a tendency of liking characters that everyone doesn't like. Like, Unicorn from the game named Will You Snail. Ehe. Tho, it seems like I'm going off trail because it's not related to redemption at all. Regarding redemption, I have a main villain where I believe doesn't deserve redemption named Occult. Guy really sacrifices and controls a lot of fish, (Fish, because the whole world is fish) plans to do more eviler stuffs in the future towards the main character (s), commit to it, and pays for it by being trapped to rot in prison. Tho, one of the main character wants to help Occult redeem, then he got convince that Occult isn't worth redeeming. And I got the other characters named Onyx, he is pretty much like Occult's ex-student. Considering Occult's behavior, Onyx isn't spared from being mind controlled either. Got forced to sacrifice a lot of fish, and turns against his own people. Onyx just snapped because Occult asked him to sacrifice his bestie, backstabbed Occult, and swims away! Tho, Onyx did goes insane back home and caused one of his friends trapped in the dungeon, while the other got under his control for years. After Onyx gets a pretty much life changing experience (Death, and got revived) it helps Onyx with finally changing to the better. Onyx just started to make a moss farm with his friend that he sees as a sister, the same character that he puts in the dungeon, also the same character Occult asked Onyx to sacrifice, lol.
Haha 20 videos in and I think you're the first person to bring it up 😂 They're pages from my web novel! But yeah anyways, I like Pink Diamond as well! I can acknowledge what she did as bad, but I can still see her growth. Even if it's buried behind a lot of mess. anyways both Occult and Onyx sound like really complex and interesting characters! Very well fleshed out as well! There's so much drama under the sea haha, or under water, I should say underwater. Anyways I like that Onyx has his own personal dilemmas such as not wanting to sacrifice a friend to make him act the way he does!
With rose quartz and iroh it's also that iroh is an active character in the story and rose is not. By the time audience finds out about his past, they have seen him do a lot of good things, and he continues to do good things afterwards. Rose is gone before the story started. And at first audience only gets to see her good side. And then her actions as pink diamond get revealed. With each new bad thing watchers find about her, her good deeds get more and more muted for them. And since Rose's dead, she can't take responsibility, apologize for lying, hurting volleyball, etc. Worse, it becomes Stevens responsibility to take care of her mistakes again and again. Rose's actions continue to hurt others, which makes it harder to see her good person, while iroh leaves impression that his dark past is truly in the past.
Right! The dead can't speak, err I mean the G O N E can't speak! That's truly the prevailing consensus about the Pink vs Iroh thing. To add onto that, I mentioned that a part of redemption is acknowledging what you've done is bad. And sadly with Pink she couldn't take accountability for what she did in her current state. It makes me wonder though if she's the kind of gem to bury the past. In her VHS tape to steven, she knew what was going to happen with her becoming steven but she chose to stay silent about her past and hoped Pearl would too. A part of me believes that if Pink was still around, she would've taken accountability if her past came back to haunt her. But truly we'll never know ahhhhh! Anyways great comment!!!
Very well explained ^^
It makes it even more difficult that the more Steven learns about the bad sides of pink the more he mirrors her, hurting himself and others in the process. It blurs the line of how much she is gone and how much Steven is her son vs is literaly her after transitioning (gender & species) & now has to contend with the the past and family that brought out the worst in them after years of no contact. Its way more complex then I think even the show writers were able to handle. And its made worse by the fact Pink is idolized so intensely at the start and we see her character growth in reverse
15:08 I have watched so many videos on character redemptions and no one has mentions this! I think this divides into the topic of redemption vs. healing, character intention vs. world intention. Realistically speaking, every person who betters themself all have vastly different approaches and motivations. There are people who have done horrible things (murder, war crimes… you name it) who go onto be average, or even good people simply because they wanted an easier life, or perhaps to impress someone they love, or even to just make money. People don’t always improve themselves for the selfless reason of “being good makes me feel good”. Healing yourself often starts with a more personal, or even petty reason. And then you eventually like the feeling of doing good things so you keep doing them anyways. (I used to be a lie and steal a lot. But I became much more honest and gave things away simply because stealing became stupid. I didn’t actually use all of the things I had because having them in public would get me caught and they took up too much space in my room. Plus, why have all these different things (clothes, fidgets, etc.) when I could just have one or a couple that’s specific to me with rich history? So much cooler, y’know? I improved myself only for me but it was a win for everyone.) And redemption is simply a reaction from the characters around them. So it completely depends on what the characters do and don’t know. A war criminal could assimilate into normal life as an average, or even good person, and no one would know (this is surprisingly common in real life). But do they deserve to be redeemed? Many people would say no, that they deserve to be killed or spend the rest of their life in prison, but others would say that if they want a second chance to be genuinely good then they deserve it. Societal redemption, or even small group redemption is a very grey area, but in terms of healing, almost anyone can heal themselves. In terms of fiction, I think more writers should mess around with what the characters do or don’t know about the morally questionable character. Would knowing their bad past (or present?) change their perception of the character? Does this character make up excuses for what they did or are they honest and ashamed? Are they honest with some things but not others (Squid School I’m lookin at you…)? Or do we the audience know of the horrible things they did but not anyone else? Think about the people you know in real life or historical figures, there’s more to learn from them then fiction tbh
(I mention Squid School because it’s common for people to be honest about some aspects of a specific bad thing (ie. History of violence, sexual misconduct, etc.) to hide the fact that they did much worse. It’s to make it look like they are bold for confessing and have moved on, that this is the worst thing they did. What happened with Squid School was that, in his dating advice livestream, he talked about throwing rocks at a girl he liked when he was a kid, that he wasn’t good with relationships. It sounded like it was a hard confession for him to make, something he was ashamed of. And I don’t doubt that. But little did any of us know that he made far worse decisions later, even having his ex have a restraining order against him. This made part of his fan base doubt what he did (not me lol you should always believe the victim), that he’s innocent until proven guilty, although the evidence has proved otherwise… And he hasn’t said a word on social media in months. Yeah, it was pretty bad. I mean he actually made some great videos and did have genuinely good writing advice. Very smart guy. But boy were we fooled.)
That's so true! I think one that I remember was some 100-year-old n*zi being tried and imprisoned after being unproblematic in society for literal decades. I believe that people should take accountability, but I also believe that people can learn from the past and do better. Everyone acts so high and mighty as if they've never made a mistake before and take it into their own hands to serve justice, which is so toxic and destructive. Justice always gets served regardless, but it's not everyone's court to administer it. Idk, my opinion! 😭 Not to be that goober, but how can toxicity be fought with toxicity? Anyways, like you said, you realized over time that stealing was stupid. Everyone knows it's wrong, I'm sure other people told you it was wrong, but you took it upon yourself to realize that. And your own intuition and worldview prevailed at the end. And I agree when it comes to writing! It's so interesting to have characters who seemingly hide their past. More writers should be less afraid to make flawed characters. To be honest, this is my first time hearing about this squid school character 😬, but ironically, this isn't my first time hearing this kind of story. It's a tale as old as time here on the internet. If it's anything like the Projared situation, omg. That's why you should never wrong people online or in person. You think no one will ever say anything, but they will once they receive courage. Your apology will be ignored, and silence will be an assumed admission of guilt. Reading more about the situation, it's sad all around. Tragic for the victims, pity to the squid. The last court you ever want to be involved in is the court of public opinion. Especially if it's the Twitter kind.

Oh my god that whole pepsi taco pizza rant had me in tears

Ts gonna get so transgender it’s ridiculous. Lil bit of a ramble here!! Since I’m transmasc myself I find myself writing transmasc characters fairly often, write what you know kind of thing. The protag of the comic I’ve been consistently releasing for a while is a trans woman herself, though. While she’s an adult at the time of the story and most of the hair emphasis there is on how disheveled and choppy it looks to represent how she’s Obviously Not Well, I do wonder once I get more into her background how I’ll integrate her hair into that. The thing about having your hair be gender affirming is that it takes SIGNIFICANTLY longer to grow it out instead of cutting it off. Like, repetitive as it is I love the idea of a variety of my characters in a fit of passion just cutting it short before they run away to have whimsical adventures as the person they really are but like. In a situation of growing it out, that gal’s gotta WAIT!! Considering all the other stuff going on in the aforementioned protag’s backstory I do think it would really add to all the insecurities she developed in her younger years to grow up and be so Obviously Not Well. It’ll take me a while to get to that in the story anyways but it’s something to think about, and this vid kinda helped me realize that, thanks for that ig :]
Hair symbolism is always the best when you can use it as a way to break away from gender norms! I also believe that some of the best stories come when you tie it to your own personal experiences! I have a genderfluid OC who goes from female presenting to male presenting depending how they feel, ofc its shown through hair as well!
Fun fact! I actually have a charater who's long hair is an act of rebelling! Maria, an experiment oc, had her hair often cut very short(and poorly cut), so training and testing was much easier. But when she regained freedom as the site went into chaos, she let her hair grow back long and straight just like she hadn't before becoming an experiment! Letting her hair grow was a way to show she was making her own choice and it's also because shes inscure about her body. Long hair feels much more covering for her and makes her feel more pretty. It's also often wet as she loves to swim around and chill in small pools of water! I cant belive one of my most fleshed out characters is for the game Pressure 😔
Omg yeah that's some great use of hair symbolism! The way that Maria uses her hair growth as a way to distance herself from her past life! A way to have a hairstyle that she chose and is more akin to what she wants since she didn't have the choice before. All good, super good use!
I guess I’ve never really noticed or thought of hair symbolism that much in terms of the story, but I DEFINITELY will be focusing on it now! I think without even realizing it I have hair symbolism in SO MANY of my OC’s. I did consciously know I was putting in some symbolism, with representation, and most of my characters being POC, and the classic thing, which most girlies can relate to, where when life gets a bit too stressful you just go and chop all your hair off. But now after watching this, I’m definitely gonna hyper analyze my characters hair styles, why I drew them that way, why their hair has changed, how WILL their hair change, and the SYMBOLISM BEHIND IT!! I am SO excited rn, I’m gonna add SO much hair symbolism into my story now! This is the first video I’ve watched on your channel, will definitely be checking more of your videos out!
Yay!!! I'm so glad that the video helped you realize hair symbolism! Omg, I feel like with some of my OCs starting out, they didn't have much hair symbolism, but as I continued to write the story and learn about it, it just became so much more organic and natural to their development. I for sure wish you the best when it comes to the hair symbolism in your story!
I have so many random tragic ocs however the main one half of my brain focused on are "priest who was forced into their position as proxy due to destiny and people only viewing them as a descendent of an ambiguously dead person" and "parentified via father being a call of duty player where this character turns to underage drinking should i mention this character has bipolar II disorder and alcohol triggers her hypomanic episodes she's doing fine", i have much more horribly traumatic characters but ththeyre being 1. rewritten at some point. 2. Being toned down because im not a big fan of literal trauma porn and heavg writing sometimes
Yeah, when it comes to mental health and tragedy, it's best to write it, rewrite it, and then rewrite it again so it doesn't make light of the situation, but also doesn't trigger the entrance of the world's smallest violin lmao. Anyways your OCs sound hell intriguing, and you should continue to write those stories!
also what if the door was black? I'm sure Mick Jagger would appreciate
Mick Jagger symbolism of a black door referring to a fictional symbolic red door was something I wasn't expecting to read today lmao 😭😭
Hearing Sailor Moon music in the background makes me so unreasonably hype.
The music is so calming I can't even describe it! And then sometimes a track plays and it's so randomly funny! Anyways I love Sailor Moon music haha!
I have this character who's from a royal family yet has been severely neglected and malnourished. her hair is thin and stringy, while her sister and brother have thick, poofy hair that's clearly well-groomed
Omg that's so sad, I'm curious why they're neglected and not her siblings
One day I thought about making hairstyles unique. I wanted to go afro with a character because I thought it would suit her really well, taking inspiration from a random girl in an ad on tv There are other styles I experimented with them like Envy's in FMAB which now was a bit modified and is in a side character of my main fun project. But I gotta give the award to a pretty new character, cause I wanted to shape her hair like an upside down mezzaluna knife, because of her cooking skills. And I just did it
Omg I love when the hair shows what a character's occupation is, and I think the upside down mezzaluna knife is a great way to demonstrate that! Also some of the best inspiration comes from the most unlikely sources haha, I love that a random girl on TV inspired you and she probably doesn't even know!
I write, but I like to imagine my main character-Rowen-has her hair dye fade out as the story progresses. The hair color (dark blue) is something her old friends/teammates helped her choose. Friends she feels responsible for after they croaked. So, the dye fading out is like her learning to move on.
That's the kind of hair symbolism that is very fun when shown visibly. Having the dye fade and the hair grow can for sure show her moving on!
@@Rosemadi.artist That's what I thought! I'm trying to decide if in the end she has her natural color, or a new color that she chose herself!
OOOh yeah. Hmmm well for me, the more I write, the more these decisions become clear XD Like a crystal ball or something! So you should continue to write/outline until you know around that point haha
@@Rosemadi.artist I'll decide at some point, lol. Thanks for the advice!!!!
I like using dnd to make OCs when I can;t get them into a story. I'll make the character, get an idea of them and then make another copy of them but divorced from dnd leaving the first version as a backburner character for an actual dnd game. Messing with the Sims CAS can also help. But I also just love making characters, so, yeah. Edit: Also, have you tried watercolour brush pens? I find they're good for consistency and details, or at least touch ups, but it's different for everyone. If you're still aiming for watercolour designs I recommend giving it a trial run.
hmmmm I used to use watercolor pens like religiously! Mostly because it was convenient to have when you wanted to paint on the go. But I've switched back to the regular brushes subconsciously. I might just go back to the pens lmao thanks! Also, I never thought to use CAS, but that's how I managed to make MySims OCs!
CANNOT stress how fast i clicked this video.......I LOVE HAIR SYMBOLISM. I have thought about this a ridiculous amount with my own OCs. So, since everyone else is OC infodumping in the comments, and it's so fun to read, I will contribute. - One has long, messy, and wavy bleach blonde hair with dark natural roots that they keep prominent on purpose. This character has an extremely rare power that is often associated with "holiness," which draws tons of attention to themself because they have a strong aura of magic everyone else can feel almost always. Their hair represents their relationship with this concept. - One is a Black girl who wears different colorful wigs all the time in the first half of the story, then natural hairstyles in the second half (now with colorful accessories instead.) She starts out as extremely indecisive, anxious, and even jealous at times, always trying to put on a front and be the "cheerful one" in the room. Even as she mellows out, however, she remains very artsy as well. - One has long auburn curly hair. Her hair is shown to have been shorter up until she met her best friend who encouraged her to grow it out. She is genderfluid/transfem, and her growing out her hair long coincides with her beginning to accept the more feminine part of her identity. She's very reserved usually, so the color and curliness are meant to hint at her true nature. - One has short, shaggy (naturally dark) hair with long bangs, and one very long bit of fringe in the front. Despite trying to push people away out of paranoia and fear of attachment, it's still super easy to tell he's actually quite friendly if you try to strike up a conversation with him anyways. He is as edgy and rebellious as he is caring and gentle. A true emo...
OMG I LOVE YOUR USE OF HAIR SYMBOLISM WITHIN YOUR OCS! These are all great examples, and I like how you tend to use hair symbolism to denote their current personality and how they're feeling in the story, to later use hair as a way to symbolize growth and healthy change. Especially when it comes to the genderfluid OC and the black girl OC! All of this is great hair symbolism!
@@Rosemadi.artist Tysm!! I love yours too! I'll have to check out your work :O
Omg I cri happy tears if you do 😭😭💕💕Thanks!!
