When i was 9 years old, i named two of my characters (who are brothers), **Peter** and **Brian** ... then, after realizing it for MONTHS, i changed it to Skott and Brian for obvious reasons 💀
Omg I literally screamed haha Family Guy 😭😭 I had something similar where someone said my OC Caroline looked like numbah 3 so I haphazardly changed her design. The struggle for originality is so real 🥲
@WellThinkOfATitle Funny because they and two of their other siblings used to be villains in my main story. Now they're main characters about in another story about family struggles followed by dumb shenanigans and stuff
There's this website called "BehindTheName" which has a TON of names (surnames too)!!! I just do whatever with my OCs LOL I have two which are named "man" and "woman"😭😭 they were supposed to be placeholder names, but I just stuck with them,, I also have ones called Yuri, Yaoi, and Ika (ika meaning squid cause she's a splatoon character:33) But I also have more normal ones like Seaquin, Mohn, Rose, Lazulite, Riko etc !!!
Omg surnames are the real challenge, I'll definitely have to check out this behind the name thing haha! and that's cool that I share a name with one of your OCs^^ I think man and woman I perfect unassuming yet assuming names 😭💕
@@IMTHINKINGMIKUMIKUOOOEEEOOO I’m pretty sure that it’s an actual name… the internet just saw that and associated with the fetishizing gay love stories we all hate.
the thing about people not knowing how to pronounce your ocs' names reminded me of that oc of mine whose name is a made up word that i have a specific pronunciation for in mind and which text to speech stuff (me and my friends play gartic phone with the text to speech on a lot and most of our prompts involve our ocs) keeps pronouncing wrong in different (wrong) ways and almost never correctly then there's the one with an obscure 9 letter long greek mythology name my friend straight up had to ask me how to pronounce during a voice call, and the one whose full name is 47 letters. oh and then there's that guy i created 3 whole years ago who still doesn't have a name. we don't talk about him. (litterally, considering we wouldn't know what to call him if we did)
Lol not the no name character haha. But yeah thats so relatable, sometimes nothing suits them. One of my characters I just called Brunette cause she was a brunette and no hair suited her. But having hard to pronounce names can be charming, once you give someone the proper pronunciation, it makes the character stand out!
So I’ve got a kind-of-joke character that everyone in-universe calls “The Nurse.” This person works in the medical field, but the general public is dead terrified of her mostly because 1) she’s a vampire, and 2) she has lived long enough to see all sorts of medical atrocities. While she “doesn’t drink” she tends to be cold and short-tempered with patients. She usually says something along the lines of “back in my day you would’ve gotten leeches-be appreciative this is only a tetanus shot.” She considers her last “real job” was a combat nurse during the American Civil War (there were a lot of amputations back then).
I have a OC that is a reaper her name is Irma but I might change it she's from a family of reapers but her mom was a human which makes her a half breed so she spends her life training with her friend who loves her and I kinda like based off Irma lair princess Daisy Kim pine and that girl from Castlevania
@@Rosemadi.artist so it would be set in modern times, sort of a contemporary fantasy genre. Like any town except there’s witches, werewolves, vampires, and the odd undead walking around
I have my own story with pronunciation: So my main OC is named Czerik, whose in-universe name comes from his native language which I partially constructed. When I made up the name, I pronounced it in my head like if you put the "ch" in chair in front of the name "Eric". Then I realized later that his name technically should be pronounced like if you put a "k" sound at the end of "cherry". This is because the in-universe language, like the languages it is based on, does not have a short "i" sound like in words like "sit", instead only pronouncing i like the "ee" in "reed". I still pronounce it the original way because it feels more natural.
I love to give my characters’ names meaning honestly- or just straight up making the meaning of the name be so ironic. (Ex. Some name meaning pure when that character is like the evilest guy on the planet) anyways thanks for some tips!
Not me giving the name Ren to the biggest liar, narcissist, and villain ever- it’s so fun for some reason- (if you want look up the name in many different origins there’s different meanings but they usually all are the same as: honest, humane, pure, etc.)
Evanescence "Ev/Evan" Dear Misery (the stinky man in my pfp) was originally this ethereal goth girl named Evangeline but i mean... congrats on his transition yk!
@@Rosemadi.artistit happened for my characters 💀 I used to have a blind seraphim oc called seri, but she was too similar to sera from hazbin hotel, so she turned into a fallen ophanim angel who is more than 10 feet tall. The story changed completely too 💀
I wish it could be so, but there's a lot that you don't knowwwww! Also this is the worst struggle as an artist 😭😭 I've changed character designs the moment people say it looks like someone else omg
A funny thing about some of my characters is their current name-find-origins. Verity's from finding synonyms for Truth (as I associate them with the song Policy of Truth), Feeb's a holdover from being a translation of Queen Moon (her full name is Febus Regina DeLune), and Daphne's from a character name selector screen. All three unorthodox nakes to fit an anarchic archivist, a former pageant kid, and an offbeat 'villain crusher'/strange sort of empath.
Sometimes I just name my characters after, like, items or foods, for example, Sour Apple, Prism, Basil, or, like, Missy Kitty. Sometimes I do just pick a name that I like and fits with the last name I already chose, for example Hailey Hopeful, I chose the last name first, and then decided that her name should be Hailey.
Hailey Hopeful is an example of an alliteration, where both the first and last name start with the same letter, that's why the name sounds so good! But yes I love naming characters after food like Macaroni, Neapolitan (like the ice cream) and Cheize
It's usually very easy for me to name characters, most of the time i translate words in other languages too. The names of my characters mostly mean something and is supporting an idea that i want to share through my character
My new characters (they're a couple) will be called A and B as long as I'm still figuring out their personality design and relationship. I want their name to fit all of it.
I have a character with an absolute crazy name backstory. So I had this other dnd character who was a dragonborne name Kelfyre, based on the term hellfire, and then our dm wanted us to make backup characters for incase our main ones died, so I was trying to think of funny knock off names for kelfyre, and I came up with the name Kalefurr, which kinda sounded like someone with a super heavy southern accent saying Kelfyre, so I made the character a sweet little lizard boy who was just a knock off of my main character. Now I'm making an entire comic series around him and Kelfyre is no where to be seen 😂
I have a OC her name is Irma but I might change it to Mira and she's like a reaper and she is from a family of reapers but her mom is a human that makes her a half breed so she is not immortal but she is strong and I kinda took inspiration from Irma lair Daisy Kim pine and that magic lady from Castlevania
@@Rosemadi.artist nope, kelfyre was this 7 foot tall, orange dragon lady with a ton of armor, and Kalefurr was this 2 foot tall, green lizard with suspenders (I've since redesigned him a bit) 😂 but there was actually a running joke where everyone in game would always confuse the two despite the fact they look nothing alike, it was just because they were the only two reptile people in the game
anyone thought of Makoto Nagano? a fisherman that was on the Ninja Warrior/Sasuke obstacle course show thing. that's where i first heard the name, so he came to my mind first. also love the video. here's a comment, a like, and a subscribe!
I love ninja warrior! It's like one of those shows that's fun to watch and secretly want to be a part of haha. Anyways thanks for the comment, like, and sub! I forgot to even say that in this video 😭
@@Rosemadi.artist I either give them generic names that I eventually forget I forget or I call them like “the protagonist” “the villain” “the best friend” etc 😭😭 Also I named my main oc but then I eventually met a friend with the same name and it felt wrong….so I un-named her LOL
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t name my ocs 😭 I’ll just be making playlists for them calling them oc playlist 1-however many, just hoping I don’t forget which ones which 🙏
I normally make up words for names, or that is what I thought in my head, I got names like: Mima, Coco, Ze-no, Dimania (Dee-Main-Eia). Heiwa (He-wah), or anything I found fun, interesting, etc. I even go to google translate to make up words or say a word translate it and see whatever sounds good. 💀😭 Naming OCs can be a stressful yet fun experience. I also subbed, first video from you, and and I'm addicted! And I love the Swiper I THINK IM GONNA STEAL-😂 Thanks for a helpful video, sorry if I'm not making anything sense its late for me.
I love the name Heiwa the best, haha i might just steal that, I'm kidding 😭💕 it's yours and it's great. But omg thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the video!!
I use to name my ocs after what they kind of resemble, for an example, i have a japanese oc that is the prodigy girl that tries to be perfect, in a very unhealthy way, and her name is Aiko, which means "loved daughter" (she has an extremely busy father and a dead mother.) I also give my ocs names after words from other languages, like Natsu, Ohana, Ash, Lavander, Arvid, Winter and Faison (Faison is a catgirl named after a Bird 🤓)
I feel like names from other countries, and just words itself tend to just sound 10x better! Aiko is such a pretty name too, it becomes even more powerful considering her backstory!
a thing i do with my ocs whose names they go by are obviously not their real names is have their actual names be insanely generic/stupid (ie jonathan, james and fucking _therese_ ), this way i won't be tempted to end up preferring to call them that
That's definitely a good way considering most people with insanely embarrassing names tend to have nicknames! Even celebrities who think their names aren't catchy enough, change it!
Usually, if I can find a way to link an OC's name to their character, I'll use it: - My OC *Jupiter* is based on fly agric mushrooms (the iconic "red with white spots") and the planet Jupiter has a giant red spot. - My OC *Trojan* is a human pretending to be a centaur, he's an amputee from both thighs and his prosthetics are built like a horse. - *Schrödingers*' name doesn't really have a complex meaning/connection to them but I think it sounds cool xD
@diediedice Thank you!! Loudly steal it if you so choose💜💜!! I don't hear my name very often in stories or people's characters if you can believe it 😭😭
My naming process has two methods. Either I'll go into an online deep-dive into meanings and cultural significance and commonality in the country of origin until at last I have something that perfectly fits the character and isn't overly uncommon in the culture in question but also isn't their equivalent of "bob", or I'll glance around my workspace for a moment until I spot something. This is how my character Maxwell was named. I looked around my room. And spotted a box labelled "Powermax Blender". My no-nonsense superhero hawk boy was named after a blender. Oh, and I almost forgot! Sometimes I create a culture and then I create a whole language before settling on a name for my characters just so it contextually makes sense. I could go on a whole tangent about the meanings and translations and cultural significance (for the character, that is) of my character named Cythe Cenesserie. But I will spare you all, leaving you instead with the note that no one else in the story can pronounce his name so they all just default to "Kite". Of course, my naming used to be so very generic. I'd have characters with interesting concepts and promise to them, and they would be named things like Carey and Irene and Morgan. But even those names had a touch of nerdery to them. Morgan's deadname is revealed to be Morgana, he just didn't care enough to change it more than removing a letter. And of course, Sans. Dear, beloved Sans. Interestingly enough, I named them before I knew undertale even existed. Sans was what I thought was a cool shortening of Insanity. But, welp, here we are now. I'm trying to re-work that story, actually (the original could not be used. It had issues beyond my cringy thirteen-year-old self's attempt at writing, and I hopefully have improved when it comes to sensitivity) but it's quite a process when every so often one starts thinking, "Why in the world did I name this character Shirleen?"
That's such a mood! I'm also reworking a story I made when I was in middle school, and the question always pops up if you should change the name or not. I just trust my 14 year old self and kept the names like Kathy and Emmitt despite not really liking them anymore. The whole Sans thing omg, I'm still fortunate to have characters who don't share a name with some other famous game character. At least not yet!
one of my ocs is named CILANTRO. the food?? It was the only name that stuck and it was a joke one literally has nothing to do with her, shes just a cool roller skater gonna kick people
I shit you not, naming is one of the FUNNEST parts of making an oc for me. It's either some symbolic easter egg, or just vibes. The two leads for one of my stories are Bobby and Isaac. Isaac is named that way because it means "one who laughs" and his arc is largely centered around trusting others to not try to wedge a proverbial knife into every show of vulnerability. And Bobby is named Bobby because he's friendly and talkative and in my brain that's a friendly and talkative name, lol.
Vibes are like one of the best ways to name a character, sometimes that dude over there is just Bobby, and that's all the explanation one ever needs LMAO. Also it's true that we tend to conform to our names!
I usually name my characters in my own language! My main ocs? Tal and Kaz? Short for Talas and Kazan, meaning wave and cauldron. Sounds nice to people who don't know the language, and incredibly funny to those who know. Like oh? Sand, wave, rock and rock two? Perfect. There's also made-up words, like Lereopher (they're my profile picture). It was a keysmash.
Yeah I always wondered about that, when someone is named after a word in another country. But if their names were Wave and Cauldron, as an English speaker I wouldn't bat an eye. Maybe Tal and Kaz are fine in that language too. Haha who knows, also, I really like the name Kaz!
I have too many ocs 😅 so found a name for cast that have more than thousand characters is gonnat be hard and some of them will probably have the same name 😭
All my OC names are just random. Sometimes they become hyperbolic houses of metaphors. Like "Silo" who is the embodiment of pain, the name "Silo" comes from the fact that they're basically just bottled up pain, pain bottled up in something like a "silo" a structure where you store things, and Silo's thing is that they stockpile pain, sucking it up from anyone who has pain. And sometimes they're straightforward, "Muliebris" which means femininity in latin. Or naming the embodiment of karma; "Karma".
That's pretty clever! I definitely like the name Silo because it's subtle but at the same time you can have it have a whole lot of meaning regarding their backstory!
Don’t really have many ocs that have “weird” names as of now- one of the few is “lemon boy” because… yellow, then “Epithumia”; ancient greek word for lust, since she’s obsessed with a serial killer (she’s the only one in general who has a name that relates to her story in a way 🧍♂️) and “kooky” who’s just there I have an oc named “himi” and i tried finding a different name for her but nothing else fits and i can’t think of her with any other name so, i’m stuck with it ig
I relate to the Himi situation, sometimes a character is so tied to the placeholder name, that it starts to feel like their actual name and now you can't change it lol. Anyways I love that name!
I have this oc named Aera and she’s Korean/American, but when I first named her it was bc it was a badass name according to google. After some research I found that the name is from Korean origin, so it was a weird coincidence bc I didn’t know for so long lol 😆
I usually keep these in mind when naming my characters: - Are they or a culture they are a part of either relevant to the story or inspired by another culture? (Sometimes I try to stick to a few cultures for names if that's the case) - Any notable or relevant personality, special abilities or strong emotional connection to some object or concept? (If I write fantasy, I usually have elemental magic and will find names that mean elemental stuff. ) - Does their story match the story of someone in mythology or fairy tales? (The Prince in the story I'm working on now has parents named after a Greek huntress and an African trickster god because their qualities reminded me of those figures in mythology. I even decided to write a story about how they marry mostly based on the Queen's namesake with the flourishes taken from the myths that the King's namesake is famous for, so sometimes this name scheme is a good source of inspiration too). - How does the possible names make me feel? (I usually like cute, cozy, ethereal, or unusual-sounding names for main characters and supporting cast, depending on the personality. Side characters usually get more common and friendlier sounding names while antagonists usually get complicated sounding or sassier names) - How familiar do I want the name to be? (I will sometimes combine names I like to make more unique names or deliberately limit my name options to make the name sound more ordinary than the choice might have actually been) - Can I make the name an inside joke? (One of the characters I made when I was a tween was named after earl gray tea because the color of his shirt was the same as my favorite brand of earl gray tea... it was a little more funny until I saw Mary and Max, but it stuck for years.)
I think these are all definitely ingredients for creating some interesting names! I especially put emphasis, for me at least, on the point if it's cute, cozy etc. Because if it sounds good, then it's good. And if it has cultural significance, that's a bonus!
I’m so surprised u’ve never heard of the song Jolene!! I litterally thought it was world famous. At first I was like, “you haven’t heard of the name Jolene? Did u forget about the song?” But no.
I have Rue, who’s name is deeply intertwined into her backstory, character arc and personality, as well as being a flower (my characters have flower based magic for context) I have Venus, whose name is symbolic of everything about her and is also short for venus fly trap and Madeline just because i like the song Madeleine by Good Kid
I have a lot of oc’s which not all of them have names, but when I name my I get them from all over the place, from google, thinking of Random things to name my characters after, thinking of random names of the top of my head, and when I give my character’s last names it’s the same process :)
I feel like the last name process is 10x as hard but doable! I like your method of hunting down names, we have a whole world full of names, why not use it? XD
I get this struggle but I love coming up with names as somebody who makes cartoony ocs lol, like walking talking objects and monsters and such like yes girl get named radioactive lmao
I've a character named Winter. And while that may not be anything special, I thought it would be funny to make said character fully commit to the name to a point where I plastered a dozen of winter-themed tattoos over said character. I get named from baby name websites and then decide how the character shall struggle
As someone whose name shows up in songs sometimes i promise you it is beyond aggravating. It's not a problem in adulthood but as a child and teen you're stuck with the same neverending loop of one or two song lines. It's like, you are all thoroughly unimaginative, but also, if you lot insist on singing the same damn thing every time you see my face you could at least do me the favour of letting me know where in the nine hells it's even from. I lvoe my name, wouldn't give it up even if someone paid be to, but there were definitely times i wished i could get away with hitting someone. 😅
@Rosemadi.artist 🤣 but hey, I'm an adult now so I don't get that anymore. Now I get loads of compliments. I'm even putting together a Spotify playlist of songs named after or based around my name. It's tiny for now, but it's loads of fun. So yup, it's not traumatising or anything, it's just the most annoying thing ever until it eventually dies down
When I have to name a character I just love to go crazy. I could stick to simpler names (which I do for less important or simpler characters), but I often am not satisfied. Here's some naming conventions I like so much: 1- Plants. Being a person who loves farming, recently gardening and plants in general, I often pick up names from the ones I was told in my years of school/courses or I just make a list of them in my free time to expand the roster of plants at my disposal. For example, I am aware that names like Erika or Camille /camellia are pretty common, so one day I decided to go unconventional. I saw this bulbous plant I really liked during a lesson, it's called Camassia leichtlinii or something similar, so I picked up the name and gave it to one of my characters' mother, so they both have flower-related names. She's into ikebana (flower sorting art diffused in Japan, I might expand on it or not) and her daughter is a graffiti artist because I love hip hop culture. There's also this woman with kitsune like powers, but I thought staying there would've been too boring, so I mixed it up with the red panda to create some sort of hybrid spirit animal for her to use at will. I searched for a plant with the name of "fox's tail" (I did it in my language so you might not find anything in English) and I found a plant genus called Acalypha. From there I changed the c to a K because it's my favorite letter in the alphabet and boom, it became one of my favorite names ever. Also, pokemon helped with constantly naming their characters over plants across the generations. 2- associating / word puns /references. I too have a female character called Skylar, I thought the name was really cool (I'm confident with keeping the A instead of the E) and this was reinforced by listening to the song "last one standing" by eminem and Skylar Grey, that was for a venom movie I guess, I don't know the fictional world, didn't watch it. Since this character of mine has an amazing voice, i couldn't let it go. As for her nickname (all my characters who have powers have a nickname associated with that different identity) is Miss Sileride, a wordplay that references her really big weapon she holds effortlessly and is able to ride if needed. Or this crucial Japanese-inspired character called Natsu Kashimori out of natsukashii, a word to describe a sensation of dejavu without having actually experienced it in the first place. Related to his powers of building memories and forging them into people. Another naming convention (but that's mostly for nicknames I suppose) could be the crasis, which is fusing two words together, still keeping the sound of it kind of consistent (some of my villains like Grimstortion or Supecter, or this non villainous character who fuses with her cat, with Felann as a nickname, making a crasis with part of her surname) Yeah sorry I have the bad habit to write whole essays about random things
Ok thats good that you also agree that Skylar is better than Skyler haha anyways that's true that's good to have your OCs names associate in a way with their interests or even being inspired by someone!
I’m writing a story (City Lights on Ao3, first chapter releases June 15th) and this was super helpful. Another thing I’d suggest is if you’re doing superhero names (it’s about superheroes) is to have the seriousness of the name tied to the seriousness of the character. For example; the main character of my story’s hero name (or as I’ve dubbed it; a supersona) is Valour. She’s a veteran superhero who takes it very seriously. While another character is a hero with a newt theme called Newtrillizer. He’s a bit more of a comic relief but is genuinely skilled.
@@Rosemadi.artist in true writer fashion I’ve since shelved the project cuz I fell out of love with it. I do have another project I’ve been working on for a while now and I might try repurposing this story somewhere down the line as a spinoff series. Still helpful tho! Another tip is giving the character a similar name to who or what inspired them.
i have a Dutch jester punk character by name of Estri van der Zotte. Estri comes from Jester, obviously, but "van der zotte" comes from the Dutch expression "Ben je helemaal van de zotte?" which means something like "Have you gone completely mad?" Her middle name is De Linn-Quent. She loves playing the villain and parts of her act involve escape tricks. Helps in getting out of prison. These are all very descriptive names that already have meanings to them. On the other side of things, i have a monstrous older man character by name of Fulkrost, resembling somewhere between an Orc and a Mesopotamian king statue. Plus teeth on his eyebrows. His name is not really based on anything, does not mean anything. Because I have a philosophy that creating a new, random word, will allow for a beholder of a story to formulate their own meanings to their name, as they witness their story unfold. And that too has great strength. Funnily enough, apparently there is an obscure kind of vampiric creature from Jewish mythology known as the Estri. Fortunate and fun overlap.
@@Rosemadi.artist Thank you for the reply! Technically English is the other language for me, because i'm native Dutch :P I've got a triple whammy in this sense for a couple of other characters of mine, known as the Gun Brothers: Cartoonish criminals named Neil, Qin (pronounced Chin) and Sanjay. - Neil is a joke on "nailgun", because he can shoot iron nails from his hand palms. - Qin Gun's chin is a gun. That's it. - Sanjay is wordplay on a Chinese name for the three-section staff, the Sanjiegun. Which is his weapon of choice. Hope that these names were entertaining!
@@Rosemadi.artist I'm glad you think so! If you know some bilingual people, one could ask them for help on things. And personal interest in stuff like history and mythology can lead into discovering things from other languages too, like looking into the original name from a person's or creature's region of origin. I don't know to what extent you may be interested in mythology and folklore, but mayhaps the following names may prove interesting to kickstart an interest: - Mesopotamia's primordial dragon Tiamat and the 11 demons she spawned to fight her children after they killed their father/her husband (such as the Girtablilu, Lamassu, various serpentine ones and others) - The Ars Goetia of Demonology - Most stuff regarding the Fae of Celtic Myth (which includes something as gnarly as the Nuckelavee) - the Nauru creation myth of Areop-Enap - the Sasabonsam and Asabonsam, monsters somewhere between a bat, a vampire and an ogre from i believe Ghanan mythology - the Orishas of... i believe Yoruba mythology - the Div and the Peri, Pre-Islamic Persian equivalents of Ogres and Fairies compared to Europe - The Bungisngis (a jolly big-tusked cycloptic creature) from i believe Indonesia, - The cycloptic monstrous headless sloth-like Mapinguari of Brazilian myth, - The Cuegle and Ojancanu of Cantabrian folklore: A short, black-haired but incredibly strong monster with three differently-colored eyes, three arms with no hands, and a single horn, and very haired giants with twenty fingers and toes, respectively - And the game Blasphemous. This one is *full* of references to native southern Spanish history, art, folklore and general culture.
I like to make my character's names either: 1. the first name having a meaning (i.e. "Bella" meaning beautiful) 2. the last name having a meaning (i.e. "Beda" meaning sun) 3. random fantasy nonsense (i.e. "Lathi" or "Isilynor") 4. random name generators
It really depends on the story the ocs designated too, but for most of my ocs I use names that go with the characters design/personality. I try to avoid casual names like Bob, Maria, Rachel, etc.
Okay, so I have an OC named Aristotle. And you might think, “he’s named after the philosopher?” NO. He’s named after the blind muppet from Sesame Street 😭
Im making a VN and im using oc's ive had awhile ill name em Deirdre(one of the namesake characters) (non-human no race) Bunny(Bianca)(other namesake) (Bunny girl) Mariah (Vietnamese but grew up in russian) Mary (Japanese Korean changed her name from Mari) Chieko (Japanese) Jade (American)
Those names are super cool! I like that they all have specific context too! That's what names are all about 😌✨Are you making a VN with renpy or something else?
PFFFFFT CAUSE WHY DOES THIS ACCIDENTALLY HAPPEN! I realized that 3 of my OCs have the same dynamics as Carly, Sam, and Freddy from iCarly. I want to scream 😭😭
For two of my ocs I just went with what sounded cool. One of them is named Plasma because why not. Thought your video gave me some things to think about.
I usually always either pick a name with a meaning (so I can secretly foreshadow events), or I just make up a name using a word (so I can secretly foreshadow events). If I'm really desperate for a name, I'll just pick based on how it sounds, and if it matches the vibe or personality of the character. Even if the meaning is important, if the name's vibe doesn't match the character, then it just feels weird.
I was in my European history class and we learned about this guy named Blaise (forgot who he was lol) and I immediately knew that was destined to be an OC name. I now have a D&D OC named Blaise who is a tiefling
Omfg that sounds just like me who saw the temperature Kelvin in a science book and named my OC that 😭😭 but I changed it cause it sounded way too close to my ex's name so I was like. Anyways school lessons always have the best uncommon yet coolest words/names
A lot of my OCs have names that are either made up to sound phonetically cool (i.e. I have OCs named Auxton, Piomonte, and Eradas) or are just flat out weird for the sake of uniqueness and might come as a surprise if you saw/read it as someone's irl government name (i.e. like my boys Lauderdale, Bartholomew, and Ghadhood). My inspiration often stems from the time period of where my stories takes place, and they're often set in the future, so, naturally, I try to think of the bizarre and quirky since naming kids as the years goes on gets odder and odder just so the kid stands out. Hope this helps others when scrounging for names! 😊❤
yes! yes! yes! I just love how names fade out of popularity, and the ones that are unlikely come back haha. I also write in a future setting and find it fun to experiment with names in that way!
If I happen to like a character enough I'll do so much research just to give them I cool name, for example: Dr. Vermillion Amanita Virosa, or Inanis, but then there are things like: Jaiden or Alastor :000 also my name starts with a J so thanks
I loved this video! I have a superhero story so thinking of superhero names is tough. I usually look up synonyms of what their powers or color schemes are. One example is Cobalt, and he has water powers.
i think something that helps me with my naming my ocs is that i always decide their nationalities/backgrounds before i get to designing. i pick the first names alongside last names and just go for what sounds best to me tbh, also their meanings too i really enjoyed watching this video, your artstyle is so comforting and i kept pausing just to take in your ocs' designs!! ILOVERUWICHANAKAIALA IN LOOKING FOEWA TO WEWINF NORENOR Y UP UA COJTETNT
Well for people who have names mentioned in song once Eminem said his mom's and practically ruined her for a bit. She sued him and she won. The same thing happened to his bully he also sued and he did the bully didn't win.
I just take two random ahh words, put every other letter next to each other, and try to sort out the chaos… For example, “Flower” “Spring” “Fpoieg” “Slrwnr” Wonderful.
i like to start with wondering how long i want the name to be so i can narrow down my choices, a more fun loving character would have a names with less syllables, and a character who's more serious, or has a higher social standing has a longer name. then i go from there haha
Yep thats true that names can play a significance in their importance! Even in history only certain important people carried titles of nobility or even certain last names!
One thing I do when naming an OC, is I try to think of their backstory or something associated with that OC, and look up names associated with that element or symbol, or just give them a name based on that name. For example, I'm making a Knight character who loves birds. I decided to name her Gayle (Think Nightingale) because it sounds like a combo of Knight and Gale. I just went with her name spelled like that because I wanted something unique but not something that has a crazy or stupid spelling to it. I'm never going to name a character "Kristel" and say her name sounds like "Crystal".
Sometimes I bust out my over achiever nerd powers and use greet and latin roots to conglomerate a name. The roots of my demon character's name translates to "alone without the help of God". (It's Solanjuvel)
Idk why the song "hurricane" from the musical Hamilton started playing but if you know you know lmao. Anyways it's always dust off those Greek and Latin roots and putting them to good use!
I use baby name websites and other languages for the names.. like I look up name that means star in Japanese right So now my ocs full name is… Hoshi Carmilla Cruorem Hoshi [how-shee]
A lot of the time I just bounce around random syllables in my head until I get something that fits (ex. Sovuhll and Uebi, two of my dragon OCs) but if all else fails Behind the Name is your best friend.
when I was like.. 8, I created a character and named it Wenny.. BECAUSE I THOUGHT that Winnie from Hotel Transylvania was called "Wenny".... They're totally different from each other. Found out that Wenny is the most iconic name that I have since then.
i usually look up names based on meanings but also when i was little i came up with two names at random: Iam and Raif and as it turns out those are just. Those are real names. My creative baby brain came up with two real names for characters on complete accident. I got Raif by trying to spell "fair" backwards btw. i think i got a bit confused but i'm too attached to the spelling lmao the only non name that i made up was Deedjre and that was inspired by the acronym DJ and the name deidre (which i thought was pronounced differently and my pronunciation is better i think) the other times i'm picking names either at random or i just liked them (ie Kizzie, Carrie). I do have ocs that are also just named after colors or animals and it's like I've TRIED renaming them but like... no i don't want to do that i want to have my ocs color coded. the animal ones have real/alternate names though. as a treat
that's actually crazy cool that you managed to somehow come up with a name that seemed fake that already existed! I'm yet to do that haha. But I feel you, I refuse to change the names of the OCs I made when I was like 14 lol
i made a book series when i was like 12 and all the names are like "citrus" and "lolly" and "azul"(not based on or pronounced like the spanish word for blue) like i literally just thought of a random thing on the spot and that was their name now lol Most of the time it would just be a random selection of letters that sounded good together. Like "Amenia". No, not aNEMia. aMENia. (it was pronounced like uh-MEEN-e-uh)
I have this oc that’s gone through like 10 name changes (currently opal/opaline) and I still haven’t made up my mind on it 😭she had the nickname kiki and i don’t want to give it up
@@Rosemadi.artistI thought about doing that 😭 they were hard to mesh so I ended up giving the nickname kiki to one of her sisters and making new characters for each old name
I got a bit startled for a sec when you said the name Makoto because that’s the name of one of my OCs, haha 😅 I got the name from the actor Makoto Iwamatsu, aka Mako, the voice actor for Uncle Iroh and Aku.
I have a lot of ocs but two are still gonna be my favorites٫ Pura (my secondary main oc)٫ and Kira (my main/sona). Usually i name them after japanese words (since i love japan and its mythology)٫ but sometimes i name them after english words too. I have an oc named Hatsu who is a red and dark grey red panda that is the size of those touhou fumo thingies٫ his name٫ "Hatsu" is derived from the japanese word for explosion٫ "Bakahatsu". and Pura's name is a reference to the word "Pure". her name was originally gonna be "Purin" but i was like "yknow what٫ i'm gonna save that for another oc that i might make."
2:50 The book reviewers on TH-cam are so sarcastic and snide about names like Brent Steele, Ricky Drake, or Dr Sparky Flames, when they come across them in books or when I imagine them reviewing books that I imagine writing. So, thanks, but as cool as those names are, I won't be using them. And the booktubers never say what it is that they find so hilariously bad about those kinds of names because it is just so obvious to everyone but me.
Maybe I can put some input, maybe cause even though they sound like cool names, they don't sound as realistic. Like yeah people can have the last name Drake but it sounds too celebrity sounding. Like a stage name. Most people irl have boring names like Eugene Fitzherbert. But I say if you like those names, don't change it for booktubers
So, Not quite the thing, gender, nickname thing, but I have a kind of joke character that is a pretty chill, layed back cat guy that happens to enjoy what I'll call "catnip" in universe. His nickname is Smokey, which he says is because he has grey fur, but I'll let you be the judge of that lol (His real name is Kevin btw)
I saw this video earlier today, and wondered how you only had 500 subscribers. Turns out you only had 5 videos, but these videos are amazing! Keep up the good work, and I will probably spend several nights reading your webcomic.
One of my fave characters from one of my fave books is called honeybee I’m pretty sure off the top of my head everyone else has normal names but it was her parents favourite bug so hey go crazy with naming characters!
I love to make my names extensions of the character or story, something the character would do themselves, or just as a silly easter egg :D Reference/easter egg: I have a military demon slaying guy named Adrian. He's named after Adrian Shephard from Half-Life because military, young man, and godlike inhuman beings outside of our understanding! Extension of character: Alan, the villain of a separate* story. "Alan" means handsome (or cheerful, or precious) which is a reference to the character's inhuman levels of beauty and his own narcissism. Character self naming: Meddie is a robot obsessed with being human, so much to the point where she begins to have delusions that she is one. Medikit, a pun of medic + kit (baby bunny) and sounding like a slogan (medic it!) is actually just a company mascot. She doesn't like how character-y this name is and goes for "Meddie". Works both as a nickname and actual name. (I can expand upon that asterisk if anyone is curious)
Love that! I also used names that can represent a character. I have an android character who changed her name to Carla (which means free) after she was, well, freed lol
@@Rosemadi.artist ESPECIALLY when it comes to their personality and story :,]
People need to learn that, "your character reminds me of [insert someone here]" isn't a compliment lol
noooo you should have collected the set and named an oc after each of the family guy family members (evil)
@WellThinkOfATitle Funny because they and two of their other siblings used to be villains in my main story. Now they're main characters about in another story about family struggles followed by dumb shenanigans and stuff
caroline sounds so sweet though??? i never associated it with superficiality
On TH-cam music during shuffle mode, a song called Sweet Caroline literally started playing 😂 i discovered it after I made the video
Right? It's cute.
There's this website called "BehindTheName" which has a TON of names (surnames too)!!!
I just do whatever with my OCs LOL I have two which are named "man" and "woman"😭😭 they were supposed to be placeholder names, but I just stuck with them,,
I also have ones called Yuri, Yaoi, and Ika (ika meaning squid cause she's a splatoon character:33)
But I also have more normal ones like Seaquin, Mohn, Rose, Lazulite, Riko etc !!!
Omg surnames are the real challenge, I'll definitely have to check out this behind the name thing haha! and that's cool that I share a name with one of your OCs^^ I think man and woman I perfect unassuming yet assuming names 😭💕
WHY IS ONE OF YOUR OC NAMES YAOI????
@@IMTHINKINGMIKUMIKUOOOEEEOOO I’m pretty sure that it’s an actual name… the internet just saw that and associated with the fetishizing gay love stories we all hate.
@@InvaderBB now that I know that's an actual name for men I kinda feel bad for those who have that name--
@@IMTHINKINGMIKUMIKUOOOEEEOOO Same here
tbh naming is the easiest part for me, I either go with Bill, Bob, Jim, John, or if I'm in the mood, Tim/Tom. I know, god-tier names.
The English and biblical name thing, ironically with names like Bill and Bob are shortened from William and Robert haha
bim bob joe....
tim is a cool name
are the girls called billa, boba, jimia, joha and tima/toma
BILL? JOHN? RED DEAD REDEMPTION??
the thing about people not knowing how to pronounce your ocs' names reminded me of that oc of mine whose name is a made up word that i have a specific pronunciation for in mind and which text to speech stuff (me and my friends play gartic phone with the text to speech on a lot and most of our prompts involve our ocs) keeps pronouncing wrong in different (wrong) ways and almost never correctly
then there's the one with an obscure 9 letter long greek mythology name my friend straight up had to ask me how to pronounce during a voice call, and the one whose full name is 47 letters.
oh and then there's that guy i created 3 whole years ago who still doesn't have a name. we don't talk about him.
So I’ve got a kind-of-joke character that everyone in-universe calls “The Nurse.”
This person works in the medical field, but the general public is dead terrified of her mostly because 1) she’s a vampire, and 2) she has lived long enough to see all sorts of medical atrocities.
The Nurse is such an ominous name that pretty much suits the character! What year does your story take place :0
@@Rosemadi.artist so it would be set in modern times, sort of a contemporary fantasy genre. Like any town except there’s witches, werewolves, vampires, and the odd undead walking around
I also have a OC that is called anything but their actual name by everyone. The joke name is "Jason" btw.
my worst naming moment is by naming news reporter twins lorem and impsum
No cause why do I like these as names 😭😭😭 the default text twins
İ just name my oc's after names i think sound nice like melly or clover
I really like those names! I agree and followed the same philosophy with my OC Diana, some names just sound good
I have my own story with pronunciation:
So my main OC is named Czerik, whose in-universe name comes from his native language which I partially constructed.
That's pretty cool because it is true that many cultures don't have the same phonetic sounds as English!
I love to give my characters’ names meaning honestly- or just straight up making the meaning of the name be so ironic. (Ex. Some name meaning pure when that character is like the evilest guy on the planet) anyways thanks for some tips!
It gives "cuddles the pitbull" type energy haha, I love this naming convention for evil characters!
Makoto(meaning sincerity) to the biggest liar and manipulator in the world
Not me giving the name Ren to the biggest liar, narcissist, and villain ever- it’s so fun for some reason- (if you want look up the name in many different origins there’s different meanings but they usually all are the same as: honest, humane, pure, etc.)
@@Itz_YaBoiRen ren also means sword so that's a double-meaning...
@@krishnavinesh5638 lol so both meaning good and bad at the same time- kinda fits him since I’m planning on giving him a redemption ark
Evanescence "Ev/Evan" Dear Misery (the stinky man in my pfp) was originally this ethereal goth girl named Evangeline but i mean... congrats on his transition yk!
Yeah congrats on the transition! I've had characters completely transition too haha, it's part of the OC process
@@Rosemadi.artistit happened for my characters 💀 I used to have a blind seraphim oc called seri, but she was too similar to sera from hazbin hotel, so she turned into a fallen ophanim angel who is more than 10 feet tall. The story changed completely too 💀

A lot of my ocs have gone through name changes like Nathan to Nate to Ethan, or ash to Aspen, but these have always just come to me
lol my current fav oc is names Ash
I'm a bit jealous, some of my OCs have the same names I gave them from when I was in middle school omg
3:15 I’ve never met a Jolene but Dolly Parton has a whole song about her lol
And that whole song is a banger! 😭💕
Those are definitely some fitting names for the trio! It just goes to show that some of the best names come from the most unlikely sources!
The only person I've ever met named Karen is the polar opposite of the meme❤
Same! The Karen I know is the sweetest person ever
@@Rosemadi.artist I find that rhymes work well as too, for example the aforementioned Missy Kitty, or one of my other OCs, Cody Bee
Awe those names are so cute, are they all like friends or just folks with rhyming names? XD
@@Rosemadi.artist Hailey Hopeful, Sour Apple, and Missy Kitty all know each other and are friends, but the rest of them are for different fandoms.
Thank you for these tips....

SEUNGBERRY PFP
@@j-love5928 IT IS I, A MEMBER OF THE SEUNGBERRY CULT.
For me, it's a little easier to name them since all my OCs are based on food
Food based names are always the best! XD
I read that one comic bubble in the thumbnail as “named after favorite Pokémon” I need to go to sleep
I'm sorry for the dubious handwriting 💀💀💀 I made that font myself
I only have used online lists to name my ocs I never considered these other methods.
It's usually very easy for me to name characters, most of the time i translate words in other languages too. The names of my characters mostly mean something and is supporting an idea that i want to share through my character
That's a very good use of symbolism in a way! Especially when it's in the name!
My new characters (they're a couple) will be called A and B as long as I'm still figuring out their personality design and relationship. I want their name to fit all of it.
That's one of the best ways, developing the character first and then giving them a suitable name!
I have a OC her name is Irma but I might change it to Mira and she's like a reaper and she is from a family of reapers but her mom is a human that makes her a half breed so she is not immortal but she is strong and I kinda took inspiration from Irma lair Daisy Kim pine and that magic lady from Castlevania
rest in peace Kelfire 😂😂I like the name Kalefurr anyway. Do they look the same?

Never named a single one of my ocs, I should’ve been taking notes
What?? Then what do you call them?? 😭😭😭
@@Rosemadi.artist I either give them generic names that I eventually forget I forget or I call them like “the protagonist” “the villain” “the best friend” etc 😭😭

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t name my ocs 😭 I’ll just be making playlists for them calling them oc playlist 1-however many, just hoping I don’t forget which ones which 🙏

Heiwa (He-wah), or anything I found fun, interesting, etc. I even go to google translate to make up words or say a word translate it and see whatever sounds good. 💀😭

@@Rosemadi.artist Lol ty! I don't mind you using the name, I just thought the name sounded good for one of my OCs. Can't wait to see more from you!
Awwwee thank you thank you!!
I use to name my ocs after what they kind of resemble, for an example, i have a japanese oc that is the prodigy girl that tries to be perfect, in a very unhealthy way, and her name is Aiko, which means "loved daughter" (she has an extremely busy father and a dead mother.)
I also give my ocs names after words from other languages, like Natsu, Ohana, Ash, Lavander, Arvid, Winter and Faison (Faison is a catgirl named after a Bird 🤓)
Usually, if I can find a way to link an OC's name to their character, I'll use it:
- My OC *Jupiter* is based on fly agric mushrooms (the iconic "red with white spots") and the planet Jupiter has a giant red spot.
- My OC *Trojan* is a human pretending to be a centaur, he's an amputee from both thighs and his prosthetics are built like a horse.
- *Schrödingers*' name doesn't really have a complex meaning/connection to them but I think it sounds cool xD
Omg I can't even pronounce that last one but lmao I love the name regardless. I also like how Trojans name associates with the character!
The other day someone asked me my name and said "why doesn't people have names like Mike or Todd anymore?" (My name is Cinnia "Sin-knee-uh")
Because Mike and Todd are bad for SEO reasons lmao. I love the name Cinnia!
Your name is beyond beautiful, it sounds so sweet 😭💕(Don't mind me silently stealing it for one of my ocs which still has a placeholder name)
I thought of Makoto Naegi, also this video is amazing
I didn't even know it was a unisex name haha, thanks so much!

literally has nothing to do with her, shes just a cool roller skater gonna kick people
Now everytime I buy Cilantro I'm going to think of your OC omg
Hey I think it's realistic to have characters with the same name, Total Drama has two Emmas after all lmao
Oh, ok.
Silo used to be three beings, but became tortured, euthanized and combined into one.
Don’t really have many ocs that have “weird” names as of now- one of the few is “lemon boy” because… yellow, then “Epithumia”; ancient greek word for lust, since she’s obsessed with a serial killer (she’s the only one in general who has a name that relates to her story in a way 🧍♂️) and “kooky” who’s just there
I have an oc named “himi” and i tried finding a different name for her but nothing else fits and i can’t think of her with any other name so, i’m stuck with it ig
I relate to the Himi situation, sometimes a character is so tied to the placeholder name, that it starts to feel like their actual name and now you can't change it lol. Anyways I love that name!
Me: goes on Google and Googles "*the characters country* names with meaning"
That's some extra step of diligence for your OC!
I have this oc named Aera and she’s Korean/American, but when I first named her it was bc it was a badass name according to google. After some research I found that the name is from Korean origin, so it was a weird coincidence bc I didn’t know for so long lol 😆
When you discover the true meaning for names it can really be surprising haha, that's happened to me a couple times!
i like to combine already existing names, so i get stuff like "Annavieve" or "Swynnford"
I totally had an OC named Zackannie, it's two names merged together!
I usually keep these in mind when naming my characters:
- Are they or a culture they are a part of either relevant to the story or inspired by another culture? (Sometimes I try to stick to a few cultures for names if that's the case)
- Any notable or relevant personality, special abilities or strong emotional connection to some object or concept? (If I write fantasy, I usually have elemental magic and will find names that mean elemental stuff. )
- Does their story match the story of someone in mythology or fairy tales? (The Prince in the story I'm working on now has parents named after a Greek huntress and an African trickster god because their qualities reminded me of those figures in mythology. I even decided to write a story about how they marry mostly based on the Queen's namesake with the flourishes taken from the myths that the King's namesake is famous for, so sometimes this name scheme is a good source of inspiration too).
- How does the possible names make me feel? (I usually like cute, cozy, ethereal, or unusual-sounding names for main characters and supporting cast, depending on the personality. Side characters usually get more common and friendlier sounding names while antagonists usually get complicated sounding or sassier names)
- How familiar do I want the name to be? (I will sometimes combine names I like to make more unique names or deliberately limit my name options to make the name sound more ordinary than the choice might have actually been)
- Can I make the name an inside joke?
I dont even know what genre the song is? 😅 is it like country? If so I don't live in the country so maybe that's why I haven't heard it

I have Rue, who’s name is deeply intertwined into her backstory, character arc and personality, as well as being a flower (my characters have flower based magic for context)
I have Venus, whose name is symbolic of everything about her and is also short for venus fly trap
and Madeline just because i like the song Madeleine by Good Kid
Your story is flower themed!? That's so cool, I always think flower names are always the best. And I might be a little biased haha
Radioactive is such a metal name, I love it so much 😭
I've a character named Winter. And while that may not be anything special, I thought it would be funny to make said character fully commit to the name to a point where I plastered a dozen of winter-themed tattoos over said character. I get named from baby name websites and then decide how the character shall struggle
I'm glad that Winter completely went all in with the winter theme! Haha that's great
@@Rosemadi.artist I'm a sucker for silly funny characters and that's my definition of silly ☝️😔
Man that's so crazy, I can only imagine hearing the same cringey joke over and over again, even worse when it wasn't even funny the first time 😭😭😭
@Rosemadi.artist 🤣 but hey, I'm an adult now so I don't get that anymore. Now I get loads of compliments. I'm even putting together a Spotify playlist of songs named after or based around my name. It's tiny for now, but it's loads of fun. So yup, it's not traumatising or anything, it's just the most annoying thing ever until it eventually dies down
Idk if this counts as reclaiming trauma 😭😭😭 but whatever it is, creating a spotify playlist is for sure a great idea!
When I have to name a character I just love to go crazy. I could stick to simpler names (which I do for less important or simpler characters), but I often am not satisfied. Here's some naming conventions I like so much:
1- Plants.
Another naming convention (but that's mostly for nicknames I suppose) could be the crasis, which is fusing two words together, still keeping the sound of it kind of consistent (some of my villains like Grimstortion or Supecter, or this non villainous character who fuses with her cat, with Felann as a nickname, making a crasis with part of her surname)
Yeah sorry I have the bad habit to write whole essays about random things
Ok thats good that you also agree that Skylar is better than Skyler haha anyways that's true that's good to have your OCs names associate in a way with their interests or even being inspired by someone!
Wth I was genuinely shocked when I saw you have under 300k subs-
Criminally underrated
Awe thanks, that's the dream haha!
That's true that it's always good to have the seriousness tied together! Also Yay another writer, heck yeah!!!
Estri comes from Jester, obviously, but "van der zotte" comes from the Dutch expression "Ben je helemaal van de zotte?" which means something like "Have you gone completely mad?"
Her middle name is De Linn-Quent.
Names with meaning and names without meaning are both equally as great! I especially love that you choose words from other languages too!
@@Rosemadi.artist Thank you for the reply! Technically English is the other language for me, because i'm native Dutch :P
I've got a triple whammy in this sense for a couple of other characters of mine, known as the Gun Brothers: Cartoonish criminals named Neil, Qin (pronounced Chin) and Sanjay.
Yeah these names are super entertaining! Makes me wish I was bilingual so I can discover new names with double meanings!
@@Rosemadi.artist I'm glad you think so! If you know some bilingual people, one could ask them for help on things.
And personal interest in stuff like history and mythology can lead into discovering things from other languages too, like looking into the original name from a person's or creature's region of origin.
I don't know to what extent you may be interested in mythology and folklore, but mayhaps the following names may prove interesting to kickstart an interest:
- Mesopotamia's primordial dragon Tiamat and the 11 demons she spawned to fight her children after they killed their father/her husband (such as the Girtablilu, Lamassu, various serpentine ones and others)
- The Ars Goetia of Demonology
- Most stuff regarding the Fae of Celtic Myth (which includes something as gnarly as the Nuckelavee)
- the Nauru creation myth of Areop-Enap
- the Sasabonsam and Asabonsam, monsters somewhere between a bat, a vampire and an ogre from i believe Ghanan mythology
- the Orishas of... i believe Yoruba mythology
- the Div and the Peri, Pre-Islamic Persian equivalents of Ogres and Fairies compared to Europe
- The Bungisngis (a jolly big-tusked cycloptic creature) from i believe Indonesia,
- The cycloptic monstrous headless sloth-like Mapinguari of Brazilian myth,
- The Cuegle and Ojancanu of Cantabrian folklore: A short, black-haired but incredibly strong monster with three differently-colored eyes, three arms with no hands, and a single horn, and very haired giants with twenty fingers and toes, respectively
- And the game Blasphemous. This one is *full* of references to native southern Spanish history, art, folklore and general culture.
i'm so good at names (my main oc is literally named Sunfall)
I love the name Sunfall! Maybe cause I name all my animal crossing towns with "sun" in it
I like to make my character's names either:
1. the first name having a meaning (i.e. "Bella" meaning beautiful)
2. the last name having a meaning (i.e. "Beda" meaning sun)
3. random fantasy nonsense (i.e. "Lathi" or "Isilynor")
4. random name generators
Omg I forgot about those generators, I tend to use those for town names!
I have a homemade marionette puppet named
Silly girl as a way to completely contrast with her character
Is Silly Girl not a silly girl? 😵💫
It really depends on the story the ocs designated too, but for most of my ocs I use names that go with the characters design/personality. I try to avoid casual names like Bob, Maria, Rachel, etc.
Yeah names that go with the characters personalities are some of the best ones! It helps you remember them better too!
Okay, so I have an OC named Aristotle. And you might think, “he’s named after the philosopher?”
NO. He’s named after the blind muppet from Sesame Street 😭
Pfffffft that's actually amazing. I named an OC after the main character of the Lego Movie, it just happens 😭
3:59 Lil Nas X also did a cover!
I just listened to it and omg it's so good!
Im making a VN and im using oc's ive had awhile ill name em
Deirdre(one of the namesake characters) (non-human no race)
Bunny(Bianca)(other namesake) (Bunny girl)
Mariah (Vietnamese but grew up in russian)
Mary (Japanese Korean changed her name from Mari)
Chieko (Japanese)
Jade (American)
Those names are super cool! I like that they all have specific context too! That's what names are all about 😌✨Are you making a VN with renpy or something else?
@Rosemadi.artist im actually kinda broke and don't have a pc so im just writing and drawing. Praying to raise money lmao
@@Rosemadi.artist ty for the compliment
I wish you the best! And no matter what you do, don't buy a surface laptop lol
The most hilarious thing happened a few weeks ago, since me and my friend were watching shrek and it was scarily accurate to the dynamics of our ocs
Yay I'm glad it helped, and I love the name Plasma!
@@Rosemadi.artist Thank you
I for some reason always default to giving my characters the name Michael probably because it's a very general name
More general than Mac, agree with me >:)
13:52 In what century was Rosalie a common name? All the Cullens except Edward and Alice have deliberately old-fashioned names.
The earliest instance I see of Rosalie was like in the 1700s :0
I usually always either pick a name with a meaning (so I can secretly foreshadow events), or I just make up a name using a word (so I can secretly foreshadow events).
If I'm really desperate for a name, I'll just pick based on how it sounds, and if it matches the vibe or personality of the character. Even if the meaning is important, if the name's vibe doesn't match the character, then it just feels weird.
That's definitely important! I love it when names foreshadows a characters personality or motives!
@@Rosemadi.artist OMG wait Kelvin is a cool name though
@@weird_art_kid I'm now debating if I should make Kevin, Kelvin again omgggg
One of the characters I've made her name is just Lilith but with and E in front
To name my characters I just take a normal name and edit it lol
I've never tried that before but it seems like a pretty cool method!!
Update; Her name isn't lilithe anymore just Lilly
Didn't change much, but I felt like Lilly just fit her more
The TMA naming method also works: Use your own name, Michael or Jarred and add the last name of a horror author
Ooooh I agree that's a fun naming convention!
I once read this book called Star Girl; One of the main characters were named Stargirl.
I like the name star girl for some reason, almost wanna steal it
@@Rosemadi.artist noo, don't, that's a terrible idea (>:])
I love terrible ideas >:)
If I happen to like a character enough I'll do so much research just to give them I cool name, for example: Dr. Vermillion Amanita Virosa, or Inanis, but then there are things like: Jaiden or Alastor :000
also my name starts with a J so thanks
Dang I like all of those names especially Jaiden and Inanis! But yeah it's always good to do research, also im jealous of the J name lol
Thank you for this… I spend literally hours or days or even weeks naming characters because I obsess over getting the “perfect name”
Yay I'm glad this helped!!
I loved this video! I have a superhero story so thinking of superhero names is tough. I usually look up synonyms of what their powers or color schemes are. One example is Cobalt, and he has water powers.
I'm glad it helped! Yeah superhero names are a whole beast in themselves, but they're always the coolest sounding names, I love Cobalt!
i think something that helps me with my naming my ocs is that i always decide their nationalities/backgrounds before i get to designing. i pick the first names alongside last names and just go for what sounds best to me tbh, also their meanings too
i really enjoyed watching this video, your artstyle is so comforting and i kept pausing just to take in your ocs' designs!! ILOVERUWICHANAKAIALA IN LOOKING FOEWA TO WEWINF NORENOR Y UP UA COJTETNT
Awe I'm gonna like cry 😭😭😭 thank you so much 💕💕 also that's a really good way to find OC names I agree!
The way I named two of my oc's was one was named after an artist I listen to and the other was named after a character my favorite band created.
Well for people who have names mentioned in song once Eminem said his mom's and practically ruined her for a bit. She sued him and she won. The same thing happened to his bully he also sued and he did the bully didn't win.
Oof to having your name called out in a song like that haha. I didn't even know people could sue. But it is good inspiration regardless
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door has a character named Jolene. Pretty solid character.
Oh yeah it does huh? If I ever get $100 I'll check it out for the GameCube lol
8:44: Well, my name is associated with a nursery rhyme song so I find it funny instead
same, but I'm switching to another name over time.
Man, that's actually crazy haha. I never even considered that could happen
I just take two random ahh words, put every other letter next to each other, and try to sort out the chaos…
For example, “Flower” “Spring”
“Fpoieg”
“Slrwnr”
Wonderful.
Fpoieg and slrwnr is a mood and I can't describe why 😭
i like to start with wondering how long i want the name to be so i can narrow down my choices, a more fun loving character would have a names with less syllables, and a character who's more serious, or has a higher social standing has a longer name. then i go from there haha
Yep thats true that names can play a significance in their importance! Even in history only certain important people carried titles of nobility or even certain last names!
I THINK I’M BOUT TO STEAL! 😭
Swiper no swiping! 😭
Yeah thats always a great way, I always consider the background when thinking up character names!
I use baby name websites and other languages for the names.. like I look up name that means star in Japanese right
So now my ocs full name is…
Hoshi Carmilla Cruorem
Hoshi
[how-shee]
I tend to use names from Poland and Greece, It's a great way to find unique yet real names!
A lot of the time I just bounce around random syllables in my head until I get something that fits (ex. Sovuhll and Uebi, two of my dragon OCs) but if all else fails Behind the Name is your best friend.
I love the name Uebi the most and the spelling!
@@Rosemadi.artistthank you, I'm particularly proud of that one 😊
when I was like.. 8, I created a character and named it Wenny.. BECAUSE I THOUGHT that Winnie from Hotel Transylvania was called "Wenny".... They're totally different from each other.
Found out that Wenny is the most iconic name that I have since then.
I believe that's better because in a way it makes the name sound more unique haha
i usually look up names based on meanings but also when i was little i came up with two names at random: Iam and Raif and as it turns out those are just. Those are real names. My creative baby brain came up with two real names for characters on complete accident. I got Raif by trying to spell "fair" backwards btw. i think i got a bit confused but i'm too attached to the spelling lmao the only non name that i made up was Deedjre and that was inspired by the acronym DJ and the name deidre (which i thought was pronounced differently and my pronunciation is better i think)
the other times i'm picking names either at random or i just liked them (ie Kizzie, Carrie).
But I feel you, I refuse to change the names of the OCs I made when I was like 14 lol
i made a book series when i was like 12 and all the names are like "citrus" and "lolly" and "azul"(not based on or pronounced like the spanish word for blue) like i literally just thought of a random thing on the spot and that was their name now lol
Most of the time it would just be a random selection of letters that sounded good together. Like "Amenia". No, not aNEMia. aMENia. (it was pronounced like uh-MEEN-e-uh)
Sticking true to the names you created in middle school is such a mood. For the record, I love all of those names!
@@Rosemadi.artist thank you
I have this oc that’s gone through like 10 name changes (currently opal/opaline) and I still haven’t made up my mind on it 😭she had the nickname kiki and i don’t want to give it up
Might as well call them all the names 😭😭 merge them all into one name and then have her be like "but they call me Opal for short" 💀
Oh noes! Don't worry, Makoto is a fine name in this instance because it's inspired by someone haha it's a nice name!
Japanese words and names are always so cute and cool sometimes! I always used to write out the Kanji for it too!
@@Rosemadi.artist Really? that's so cool!!
I love the dichotomy of the name Smokey and Kevin tbh haha. The nickname is great with the context!

Nameberry and misspelled words my beloved 🙏
can't go wrong!
I love to make my names extensions of the character or story, something the character would do themselves, or just as a silly easter egg :D
Reference/easter egg:
I have a military demon slaying guy named Adrian. He's named after Adrian Shephard from Half-Life because military, young man, and godlike inhuman beings outside of our understanding!
Extension of character:
Alan, the villain of a separate* story. "Alan" means handsome (or cheerful, or precious) which is a reference to the character's inhuman levels of beauty and his own narcissism.
Character self naming:
Meddie is a robot obsessed with being human, so much to the point where she begins to have delusions that she is one.
