Thank you for your story! SoCa San Diego has peak residential electric rates at $0.59 and more! Fast on-road charging today is for occasional use to allow a BEV to be used as a primary do-everything vehicle. Break even price with gasoline vehicle is typically about $0.40 kWh with gasoline a bit above $3 a gallon. In the midwest in 2020 in a suburb of Indianapolis IN we were paying $0.12 kWh. With gasoline above $4 a gallon charging a BEV at home was about 1/4 to 1/5 the cost of gasoline. Wholesale electricity purchased a day of head at off season peak times in the midwest USA is less than $0.03 kWh actually sold by the MWh. That gives an indication of how cheap non peak electricity needs to be produced at. The other expenses are due to supporting the power grid infrastructure. For charging large fleets of semi trucks a truck stop should have off peak industrial rates of electricity that are about 1/2 what it is for residential rates. Off-peak industrial rates would mean charging late at night to just the very early morning. The CATL condensed battery advertised to be out at the end of 2024 has a reported energy/mass density of 500 Wh/kg almost twice what is available now and better than solid state batteries. If that battery is affordable it makes switching large vehicles over to BEVs much more practical. Most Diesel Semi are now driven at slower speeds to get higher fuel economy with low cost drivers and expensive diesel that's how the economics work. With BEV the cost would be half and running at higher speeds would be more economical making higher efficient use of the driver's time.

I speaking from the future. Tesla has rehired some of the SCer team and put another person in charge. And everything is as great and reliable as ever with the Supercharger system. Now doesn't everyone feel silly?

If you can charge at home, here in Arizona, it cost me 4 dollars to drive 100 miles. No gas car comes close. This is at .12 a kilowatt hour. Ev are new and gas cars are 100 years old, give the EV tech a couple years instead of judging a work in progress so harshly. Soon this won’t be an argument when we have better batteries. Don’t buy an EV if you can’t charge at home.

I'm with you, I have a 2023 Quad R1T in El Cap Black Mountain. I REALLY like the Storm Blue. I'm torn on Drift wood or Blue with Walnut (i think that's going to look sooo good). Just not sure how inclined I am to "downgrade" to a tri-motor to get all that stuff while also adding 50K CDN to my current loan doesn't seem too smart. I love the Quad, but not a chance in hell I can get the wife on board with that ones price tag.

I was wondering about the audio package. I have a Quad R1S Gen 1 on reserve. I should be picking it up in a couple of weeks. I was really torn between my reserved car and the refresh Dual Motor Large Performance. I think I'm sticking with Quad. What would you do Duke?

No mention of under body protection. I assume it’s included with all-terrain package, but weird they don’t reference it. Maybe cost savings?

I’m very interested in a Rivian but a company who continues to loose money greatly concerns me. I know how startups like Rivian work and I want to see some progress toward profitability before I pull the trigger. Love the vehicle and design. No one wants to see Rivian succeed more than me.

Quick reality check. In 1Q24, Rivian's loss per vehicle was over $100,000. As proof... in 1Q24, Rivian lost $1.4 bill. Rivian sold 13,588 vehicles. Rivian's GAAP loss was $103,032 per vehicle. In 4Q23, Rivian's gaap loss was $107.4k/vehicle. Rivian's situaion is beyond dire. Rivian needs to sell its cars for around $200k+ just to break even on a gaap basis. Almost impossible. Rivian's inability to reduce its massive losses is why Rivian is headed for certain bankruptcy

Even if Rivian do not include the speaker and other things to lower the cost. The price of there vehicle is higher. I think they could have lower some pricing specially in today’s inflation and interest rates are high. Instead of going forward they are going backwards. I would love to get a Tri-Motor but it’s know starting at $100k. 😮Maybe they can bring some special financing rates.

Your Rivian or even a Tesla Model Y are much larger and much less likely to be crushed where your battery will be breached than a poorly made Chinese EV so really there is a lot to consider that goes beyond the type of vehicle BEV vs ICE. Diesel does have the advantage of not being very flamable.

Proof its easy search EV fires on TH-cam. You'll find that in China 4 BYD BEV dealerships burnt to the ground. You can find the video of the Porsche on the Falicity Ace self igniting spreading to the other BEVs beside it; sinking the ferry with 4000 luxury cars - Porsche is being sued for the accident but any BEV can catch fire like the Porsche - just sitting, not charging, not doing anything; a brand new perfectly made car. This is due to growths inside the batteries called dendrites; these can cause a short inside the battery at any time causing enough heat to catch that cell on fire; spreading to the other thousands of batteries; other cars then catch fire.

Being in an EV is safer. I think being on the receiving end my be less safe. When one of these heavy and large EVs. I.e Rivian, Silverado and especially cybertruck obliterate a small car is going to be a bad day.

Of course BEVs at least are far more dangerous in a crash. #1 you are sitting on the firewall. #2. BEV fires are 4000f not 500f like gas or maybe diesel. The battery controls your doors - if you have a crash damaging your battery ;your doors and windows will not work, the manual overrides may not exist or be in odd spots someone unfamiliar with the car won't know and rescuers won't be able to reach. See West Hollywood Tesla crash and fire; passers by attempted to rescue 3 passengers trapped in the rear of the Y vehicle after breaking the windows out they were able to extract 2 the 3rd burnt to death.

R1S Quad owner here. This only underscores why I gave up my Ram 1500 Longhorn for the Rivian. I ain’t going back

This is for everyone. Kneel Mode will not activate when the vehicle is on High or Highest ride height. I enjoy riding higher especially when driving in the city where the speed limit is under 45mph. Sometimes when I park, I have to switch to Normal ride height before parking then I can the vehicle will kneel. If you ever encounter this issue switch into drive , lower your height then park again. This is how the software is designed unfortunately.

Does this car have air suspension? I just saw one of these driving in front of me today. I noticed it was sitting uneven when we were at a stop light and looked somewhat bouncy when driving down the street. The car was brand new and still have paper plates on it but seems like it's already got issues. I'm curious how's the reliability and build quality of these cars.

I have the exact same color as yours! January delivery here. Rear liftgate manufactered with a 2 degree slant off center and it had one of the rear tailights that are on the liftgate itself "squished". Driver and passenger side door panels were fine - but the fenders around the drivers, passengers, and the hood itself were all misaligned. Missing plug clips in the frunk near the A pillar. Stitching not perfectly straight on the steering wheel. Maddening rattle behind the dash. All around very crappy fit/finish for a $85k vehicle. That said, I expected a bit of this with a new car manufacturer. Rivian had me drive 4 hours to Atlanta to leave it with them - they had it sent to a body shop to replace the lift gate, and address the front hood/fender stuff, rattle, and stitching. When I got it back, it was addressed 90%. The stitching was still off, and the hood/fender issues were only noticeable by my OCD eyes. The rattle was fixed, but during the repair, they dinged a speaker grille on the dash. That was fixed with an at-home visit a few weeks later, but then the rattle is back. I still see a lot of minor gaps between the plastic lower body moldings and the painted metal parts. If I lived in a salty climate these would just be picking up salt/mud to scratch into the clearcoat between the two parts... how they think this stuff "passes" for quality escapes me. I'm still long on Rivian... overall I love my R1S, and just need to stay on top of the quality bits until they fix them all. We all need to be a pain in their sides, so they can get better for regular consumers.

Picked up 2024 R1T (Dual motor in Limestone) today, hope they resolved any issues with recalls and such before our delivery. Kyle our delivery person was super helpful and knowledgeable about all things Rivian, I’m confident they took care of the issues ahead of time.

You have probably one of the best EV ownership channels. You are very transparent with how things look, how it wears, and how well the service works. I am thinking about making the Rivian R1S my first EV vehicle and you are making it that much more of an easier decision for me!

Looked over my R1T closely after watching your video and discovered my driver side door is misaligned, but not in the same spot. Mine is sticking out at the bottom back of the door (gap between front and back doors). Service request submitted.

Great truck but your just a little to picky lol

I asked the service center about the driver side door not sitting flush with the fender. They said it’s within spec and it’s intentionally little bit inside than the fender to reduce wind noise. I don’t agree with them but it doesn’t bother me. I checked other cars in the lot and most of them were similar.
