- Electric vehicles have many advantages over gas cars, however, in this video you will see the main disadvantage front and center. Tesla is praised for it's Supercharger network. Yet many Tesla owners were trapped at many Superchargers across the country which has exposed a major flaw with public EV charging during emergency situations.

A total eclipse is a top nerd event, Tesla's are the car choice of smart people (if you think this is wrong - you're missing important information. With the money you save on gas and the reduced maintenance costs buying a new Model Y over ten years will cost you $11,000 less than a moderate gas car.) So of course all of us Tesla owners headed to the path of totality. I drove from California to Texas. And yes the closer to the event the more crowded Superchargers were. I think we all expected that. (The Junction Texas Supercharger was crowded, but it was also in the path, so no problem. They had a better view of it than I did a little farther east.)
The onboard navigation computer didn't have all the Superchargers listed. Some were too new, or the app wanted to spread the usage. I encountered some lines at Superchargers. At the first line I was told about another location Deming, NM, 68 miles away. The woman who told me didn't have that range left but I did, so I drove there -- no waiting.
At another Supercharger in Ozona, TX , on the way back, I was 5th in line and had met the guy in front of me a couple times. A woman stopped to tell him about a brand new location with more chargers, and fast chargers just three blocks away. After that it was clear driving all the way back to Los Angeles.
Supercharger info dot... you know the rest is a terrific site; more updated than the navigation in my Model Y. It had the Deming, NM and Ozona TX which had saved us a lot of time.
JD Powers has a 'study' claiming that 80% of EV owners hate public charging and that 20% of the time the chargers were broken and they couldn't charge. I know one thing: They didn't interview any Tesla owners; they could've talked to anyone having to use the other two major charging networks. Now Superchargers becoming open to all EVs. I've been driving my Tesla for 4 years, drove coast to coast twice. A non working charger just means move over two spots and that one always works. Never more than two chargers were ever broken in the 8 to 12 slots locations. And if you live somewhere where you can't charge at home, usually 30 to 40 minutes at a Supercharger while you do your food shopping gives you all the range needed for an average week. I like to take naps.
'Terrifying'? implies physical or psychological danger. Clearly that didn't happen. If you think our world is dangerous, stop watching these local junk TV news programs. They get you to watch by trying to scare you. I've lived for years in areas with actual high crime rates with almost no problems at all. "In the 1950s we didn't have to lock our doors...." For 5 years when my old dog needed to pee several times a night, I just left my back door open every night. I've traveled all over the world and will sleep anywhere I have to to get to the places I want to visit, this has been parks, outside of train stations, outside above 8000 feet in blowing rain, youth hostels, amazing places that happened to be full of bears.

Maybe a Tesla driver can help me on this one. Doesn't the car tell you the charger is full / busy? Was this an issue of the drivers not thinking it would be "so" busy. Also, I'm assuming there weren't any other Supercharger locations within a decent range?
That was the closest Supercharger location to the eclipse totality zone, so that may have been their only option.
@@OpinionatedOG184 Thanks. I know the other chargers can have some problems, but I should at least consider these options for my Tesla. I've got the adapter. Maybe a CCS location has a restaurant or store I want to go to, or I need to charge and pee and the Supercharger is just a bit too far....
And yes patrick7228 The Tesla nav app should do a better job. Some where in the Tesla main computer they know where all the Teslas are, how much charge/range they have -- so it should be better organized. In Texas the speed limit is 80 mph (not sure if that's wise.... but yee hah!). Teslad drive at least as good as any BMW or Mercedes so they can handle 80, but the range is reduced (about 10 percent over 70mph). The Nav kept trying to send me to Superchargers that were a bit out of range at 80 mph.
@@OpinionatedOG184 You do know that's an extreme outlier though, right? this is the rural midwest. you're lucky to have any at all, and the CCS chargers are mainly only Electrify America at Walmarts. If you're going N-S, there's one in Paducah, the magic dock in Marion, and the next isn't until Effingham, IIRC.
Tesla + Rivian driver here. The Tesla Nav tells the driver how many Supercharger spots are open and how many Tesla’s are en route to charge at the station.
@@danielam3829 I got some of that, but mostly I got last minute warnings to find another Supercharger because the one I was less than three miles from was busy. These announcements were useless and usually wrong.
Many superchargers didn't show up on my screen. It was crowded because of the eclipse.
Teslas are far more efficient than R1Ts... no comparison. I know because I own both. These Tesla drivers must be rookies. The App will tell you if the chargers are full and typically busy. Experienced EV drivers know to plan their routes to avoid heavy traffic on days like Thanksgiving, Christmas or an eclipse.
Well having to avoid traveling when everyone travels is a major drawback for EVs.
I know they can tell you if the stalls are occupied.. but they can't really know if there's a line or how long, right?
Duke, piggybacking on my other comment of "keeping it real". Heat Pumps in EVs are more efficient. Rivians do not have heat pumps. When Rivian does adopt heat pumps, our beloved large frunks will be greatly reduced (a trade-off that WILL happen). From my online research Rivians and Fords do not have heat pumps. Brands/vehicles with heat pumps are: Nissan, Chevy (GM), Toyota Prius HEV (that surprised me), BMW, Audi, Tesla, Porsche (part of VW Group), Skoda (VW group), Hyundai Group (including R1S' direct competition the EV9), and Jaguar.
In the interest of "keeping it real" as I know you want to do, one drawback of Rivian is they don't have EV heat pumps which are more efficient for cooling and heating. Almost every EV manufacturer is adopting heat pumps and so will Rivian eventually. When Rivian gets heat pumps, the frunk will be much smaller in space so don't get too attached to Rivian frunks. Also, disposal of refrigerant can be a drawback (as it is now in ICE vehicle air conditioners and EV batteries). I researched “safe” refrigerants online and it seems R134yf is starting to be used instead of R134a (R134a contains Fluorine) in vehicles (this may just be the ICE vehicle standard air conditioners-not sure) as a safer alternative and R407C (contains Fluorine) is being used in buses as due to high thermal exchange rate (this may just be the ICE bus air conditioners-not sure). I'm a Chemist and my husband is an HVAC Contractor so I study this crap. LOL.
I drove our Rivian R1T from Wisconsin to watch the totality and actually stopped at that same Marion Supercharger the day after the eclipse on our way back home. No lines that day, though. 😊

This is why I don’t understand the hype about Tesla supercharger access. Most supercharger stations have 5-10 stalls…maybe. Tesla Model Y and 3 are their best selling cars and they don’t even have the chargers to cover everyone that owns those. Nice thing about a non-tesla vehicle is the ability to use other chargers, EVgo and Electrify America are actually decent options and having a CCS lets you access those PLUS Tesla superchargers. Seems like people in the market for a new EV would be better off buying a CCS/J1772 vehicle over a Tesla if they use public charging.
I think that people need to realize (and the commentators) that its not always necessary to get a "full" charge. I think people watse time because they charge more than is needed. Plus, in this case, be kind to your fellow EVers.
You should have pulled between the Blue and the White Tesla's at the beginning of the line. LOL.

You are a Rivian owner, doesn't mean you need to hate on Tesla. Full seclipse is a special event and you shouldn't be equating it with normalcy.I have both and love both cars(R1T more than MY)! Failed attempt at a cheap shot!
I'm not a fan boy of any brand including Rivian Mr. Tesla X. I cover the good the bad and the ugly without prejudice. This was an actual event that was not isolated to this charging station, and pretending that problems don't exist is exactly how things won't improve.
Nice RIVIAN, I just hope and pray that RIVIAN survives production ramp up and doesn’t go bankrupt. I’m a RIVIAN investor and I’m sweating bullets 😅
Rivian has awesome products, and is currently suffering because short sighted investors group all EVs together. This mentality will disappear over time.

Hopefully they keep the Amazon contract. Every driver I've spoken to with a Rivian truck absolutely LOVES it.

Don't know about this one, but eclipse in 2017 I saw some lines at gas stations as well. I was going to charge before the eclipse, but found a decent spot before I got that far and still had enough range to get back with the range.

I was at that charging stop a few months ago and there was only 1 other car...peak times are not the times to be hitting a SC lol
That Supercharger was full at 10:00 am according to the News, and we got there around 5:00 pm. As you can see the gas pumps are empty. I was there in January and it was pretty busy early on a Sunday morning.

I drove to the totality from Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Portage Service Plaza (a Car and Semi Gas Station) near Freedom, Ohio. I drove my ICE Chevy Impala not my EVs. 3 minutes of totality was amazing!! The Portage Service Plaza was wonderful. The parking lot was full. The truckers were honking their horns as they saw us. Tons of children and teenagers. Everyone happy. Loved it!!! Worth every mile.
Nice to see the brains and beauty that drives the Mazda! Keep your videos coming as I’m still not convinced of EV’s. Also, discuss how much range or percentage of charge is lost when you drag race, lol.

One drag race in a Tesla doesn't reduce the charge all that much. I haven't done it. A general rule of thumb is: Max range is based on 45 mph, +10mph lowers range about 10%. So my Model Y has a 320 mile range, but for battery health I keep it at 80% charge so that's 256 miles, you also don't want to go below 15% but it doesn't hurt (the same way when the empty light comes on in a gas car you have 20-30 miles but head for a station.) so practical normal use is about 65% of the battery, which would be 208 miles. For 65 mph, that's 144 miles. Not as much as a gas/diesel vehicle but plenty for an average week for most people. If you charge at home, as I do, I never go to a Supercharger near my home. The other thing is say you want to drive into the desert? If there's a charger anywhere near where you're headed, any Tesla has enough range for almost all the back country driving I've ever done.
And if you're 'not convinced of EV's' you're probably missing information. Compared to a new Mazda, a new Tesla Model Y that costs a lot more, will over ten years save you $11,000 over all in gas savings and reduced maintenance.
And the batteries? They lose about 6% range in the first couple of years, after that it's usually less than 1%/year for... Well they don't know, the 2012 Model S are still doing great. There are some used as livery that have over 300,000 miles on them, original battery. Those Model S's used as livery have saved double their initial cost over a gas car.
You failed to consider the cost of electrical work and the charger for home charging. My Mazda cost me $24k out the door and now has 388k mikes with ONLY oil, plugs & trans fluid changes. Gets over 500 miles per tank. EVs are just a lifestyle vs economic choice currently.
@@briancarlisi2224 I have owned Mazdas for 20 years now. They are great cars, but I don't get close to 500 miles per tank, and the last maintenance cost on my CX9 alone was more than I have spent on 3 EVs over the last 13 years.
6 months of gas in the Mazda was more than the charger installation and electricity cost. I own both and there is no comparison. The Rivian R1S is far superior to the CX9 in every measure with a fraction of the operating cost.
@@briancarlisi2224 The over ten years number includes installing the charger $1500 - $2000. This is hiring an electrician. I installed my own with a 60' 4 gauge extension cord. So you drove 388k miles but no tires, no brake job, no belts replaced? Compared to my Prius V 40mpg, my Model Y, at high California utility prices, is 50% more efficient. (The implication is that for just what you've paid for gas to go 388k miles, my Model Y could go 580 k miles. )
The only 'lifestyle choice' is having the extra money to buy the Tesla. That can be a stretch for some people. (And what was true in 1970 is still true, the cheapest ride is a reliable old beater bought cheap.) We can go around in circles. Look it up. (YT channel Electrified refereed to the analysis that arrived at the $11k just in the past two days. ) I've heard some complete yahoo 'explaining' how his F250 Diesel would always be better for the environment than any Tesla ....
