The Julie Andrews Story (BBC, 1976) Part 3: Star of the Sixties
The Parallel Julieverse is proud to present "The Julie Andrews Story", a special three-part radio profile produced by BBC Radio and first broadcast in January 1976.
Julie's relationship with BBC Radio traces back to her early days as a child performer in the 1940s and 50s when she lit up the airwaves as "Britain's youngest singing star". It's a testament to her enduring popularity that the national broadcaster continued to follow Julie's journey closely, crafting this rare gem of an audio profile in the mid-seventies. Based on original transcription recordings, this special video presentation offers the first chance to hear a programme that has lain dormant since its initial broadcast, half a century ago.
In "Star of the Sixties", the captivating finale to "The Julie Andrews Story", we journey with Julie through her skyrocketing ascent as an international film sensation, propelled by blockbuster titles like "Mary Poppins", "The Sound of Music", and "Thoroughly Modern Millie". We also delve into the unexpected failure of her subsequent big screen musicals, "Star!" and "Darling Lili", and witness her graceful pivot to television in the early 70s with the award-winning variety series, "The Julie Andrews Hour".
Interviews with esteemed co-stars and collaborators, including Michael Craig, George Roy Hill, Daniel Massey, Beryl Reid, Nick Vanoff, and Robert Wise, shed further light on this fascinating period of Julie's career.

This lovely solo performance from Julie's fourth and final guest appearance on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW in May 1962 has previously circulated here on TH-cam and other video-sharing platforms, but not, as far as is known, with the framing prefatory and concluding material. As part of its variety line-up, THE GARRY MOORE SHOW routinely featured short comic sketches peppered between its big musical numbers and dance routines. To that end, the show had a team of resident comedy writers whose job was to create a steady stream of weekly skits and gags. Several of the staff writers on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW would in fact graduate to considerable fame in their own right i...

In May 1962, Julie Andrews made her fourth, and final, guest appearance on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW. One of the regular features of the long-running CBS variety show was a nostalgic segment called “That Wonderful Year” where Garry and the cast would honour a select year from the 20th century and “cover its main events in history, entertainment and other areas” (Hyatt, 157). Julie Andrews was still a beautiful young woman at this time, starring on TV even before Mary Poppins (1964) and Sound of Music (1965). Garry Moore and Ed Sullivan were amazed by Julie’s talent.

Delightful! If only Dick Van Dyke had watched this video before his attempt to do a proper cockney accent before his performance on Mary Poppins as Bert the chimney sweep...Actually Michael Caine woulda been great as Burt and he'd a been about the right age.

Well, now it's 2024, and I've just seen this for the first time!. Great Scott! This was as charming and delightful as all get out! Loved every minute! When this was done in 1961, I was a college freshman. Last year, in 2023, I turned 80! Carol and Julie are a bit older, and though I don't speak for them, I wish we all could turn back the clock. We had more fun back in the day than people are having now, thanks to social media. I admit I like to send endless inquiries to Google and I enjoy TH-cam videos (where I found this gem), but I avoid Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and all the rest. Thank you for posting this musical number. It was clever as can be, and so well done. Both Julie and Carol were oh, so talented!

This was made in 1976. Victor/Victoria came out in the ‘80s. I love that movie, and it truly revived her career. In this series, I wish they’d featured more about her work with James Garner, her favorite co-star. They became good friends, and they each said in separate interviews that if they hadn’t both been married when they met, they probably would have gotten together.

50:14 I thought Julie's gift is not only lying on comedy✨… One of reasons why this woman attracts me is that she can hold all styles💫… She can be a star in comedy (Mary Poppins), but also can be a queen in dramatic roles (Duet For One) ; She can be "throughly modern", but also can accept "a long suffering" (Don't you think that there's a gap between the audition of Throughly Modern Millie and the character in Hawaii in this video😂?) ; She can be a girl next door (The Sound of Music) but also a "bitch" (Emily) or "totally insane" (Not getting married today)🌟…… She is gifted, but also diligent and has suffered a lot😢… What makes a Star?

27:11 Since then they talked about STAR! (1968)… I thought people should know more about this film's shooting and Julie's experience, then they'll know how hard and tough she had worked for that movie😢… (Besides, I remembered that Julie had a surgery not long before then?) In addition, there're many great clips of Julie behind STAR!✨… She is so beautiful💝… Thank you for sharing those👍! (P.S. There are clips behind Mary Poppins on TH-cam, too! Julie is so beautiful🌹…)
