- In May 1962, Julie Andrews made her fourth, and final, guest appearance on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW. One of the regular features of the long-running CBS variety show was a nostalgic segment called “That Wonderful Year” where Garry and the cast would honour a select year from the 20th century and “cover its main events in history, entertainment and other areas” (Hyatt, 157). For this particular episode, the year was 1947 but instead of the usual range of varied songs, skits and newsreel snippets, the entire segment was devoted to a single musical, Burton Lane and Yip Harburg's FINIAN’S RAINBOW, which was presented in a condensed twenty-minute form.
One of the undoubted highlights of the segment was Julie's lovely rendition of “How Are Things in Glocca Morra”. The song was well-known to Julie, as she had just recorded it the previous year for her 1961 album, BROADWAY'S FAIR JULIE ANDREWS, and she sings it here with effortless grace.
As with her other appearances on the popular GARRY MOORE SHOW, reviewers waxed rhapsodic over Julie. “Miss Andrews…was at the top of her form throughout the hour show,” wrote the TV critic for THE GAZETTE, and she “gave…a sparkling performance” (Marsters, 26). Happily, over half a century later, we can still enjoy that sparkle here...
