- Excerpt of Julie Andrews singing "Looking for a Boy" by George and Ira Gershwin on THE GARRY MOORE SHOW, aired 26 September 1961 on CBS
Five months after her first appearance on the THE GARRY MOORE SHOW, Julie was back as headline guest on the opening episode of the show's new 1961/62 season. This time, she chose to sing "Looking for a Boy", the opening track from her recently recorded Columbia album, BROADWAY'S FAIR JULIE.
Written by George and Ira Gershwin for the 1925 stage musical, TIP-TOES , "Looking for a Boy" enjoyed a mid-century revival as a pop standard when it was covered by a number of high-profile jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, and Rosemary Clooney. Julie's version here, using the Henri René arrangement from the LP, is more traditionally Tin Pan Alley/Broadway in style, but it still has distinct soft jazz/swing tones and it's charming to hear -- and see -- the young Julie experimenting with what one reviewer of the time called "nice, easy, straight, relaxing vocalizing' (McCord, S6-9). As another reviewer enthused, "It brings out the warmth and tenderness in Julie" (Laffler, 4).

What a treasure! That is one of my really favorite songs performed by Julie Andrews to perfection. What a glorious voice. How magnificent! And how young, lovely and gorgeous she is - her waistline is so incredible.
Wonderful!!! Thanks a millions!!!
Julie is pure treasure
Another outstanding performance by J.A.! Good old Garry Moore knew talent when he saw it.
I can't help being nostalgic when watching these clips from the great "Garry Moore Show". Life in America was good in '61.
Perfection!
You are simply Divine, omg I love you Julie since I was 4 or 5 ❤️

I love Julie Andrews soooooooooooooooo much! Thank you for uploading this! It's one of my favourite songs she sings! Love you Julie ❤❤❤❤
Heartwarming. Thank you so much!!! I hope u'll find her singing her songs she sang for the BBC in the Julie Andrews Show from 1959, I heard she sang difficult arias.
From your lips to the proverbial deity's ears, Shams...I've been in touch with the BBC archives and they don't have copies of any video material from Julie's 1959 shows. Unless Julie herself or some other member of the production personnel has kept a copy, they likely don't exist. I wrote a blog entry on this very topic a while back:

@@theparalleljulieverse1324 What incredible research you have done to shed some light on this travesty. I remain hopeful of a recording of this show. I was informed that she sang the Waltz Song, Tom Jones, and Lo Here Gentle Lark Sing among others. (In the Julie Andrews Hour, she sings a bar or two from this aria and its swell even though she was not prepared).
@@Shamsithaca It's not so much a travesty, as that video taping did not _exist_ then. Even recording onto film was rare.
If by "the Waltz Song" you mean the disconcerting English words to "the Blue Danube", she sang that at age 15, and (audio-only) recordings do exist (I have it). I think it might have been from "Educating Archie" (a ventriloqism show. On the radio. Only the BBC ...). Listening to it now! Bliss!
@@G6JPG Nope, the Waltz Song from Tom Jones. Her Blue Danube is wonderful to listen to as is another aria that I cant recall someone posted, but cant locate on youtube anymore! I wish I had saved it then.
5:42 Garry Moore doing a bit of Jackie Gleason.
Such a wonderful singing voice 💗
So sad that she lost it
Linda Ronstadt lost her ability to sing , also 😥
2 of my favorite singers
